The desktop integration package for SuSE dos not create any icons/starters at all so you probably have an older desktop integration package installed (did you ensure to remove it when de-installing OOo via YAST?). If not you might have starters left without linked icons etc. Open YAST, search for openoffice, de-install all and re-install using the freedesktop.org desktop integration.
