I should close the BR as INVALID - I found BR
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97420 and it seems that KCharselect and OOo
just use different approach for displaying fonts (or. rather, KCharselect has
not yet possibility to show just symbols in the specific font).

Little experimenting did show that probably culprit is KCharselect: pure OOo in
a system with little fonts acted same way as ooo-build but KCharselect did not
show e.g runes or ogham as there were no fonts containing them. It seems
KCharselect tries to show all possible subsets in font if possible - it displays
runes or ogham or Canadian Syllabics almost in every font, except Open Symbol or
Wingdings (though in some fonts more completely and in some fonts just a few
characters).

But I'd be very happy if some OOo's developer could just a little experiment
with special character dialog and KCharselect to affirm or refute my findings.

The bug report is based on Mandriva's BR indicated in URL.
Short description: OOo's special character dialog doesn't display all possible
characters, e.g. comparing to KCharselect. For example, Canadian syllabics
(U+1400–167F according to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Aboriginal_syllabics ) are not found in
any font but at the same time KCharselect displays them correctly in all fonts
that include that range. There seems to be some more characters or character
sets OOo doesn't just display and KCharselect does.
The problem seems not to be related to fonts itself (as indicated in closed BR
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=87787 ) because I checked it
with many fonts. Most complete from my fonts was Arial Unicode MS but even that
doesn't include mentioned Canadian syllabics in OOo.

Don't have Aboriginal Serif but KCharselect displays Syllabics in Dejavu Sans
(which at least in mine Mandriva seems to be default font for OOo), Linux
Libertine, Times New Roman and Arial Unicode MS (last two are imported from my
Windows Vista). OOo doesn't display Syllabics in none of them.

But Canadian Syllabics is not the only example. KCharselect displays e.g Ogham
in all mentioned four fonts, OOo only in Dejavu Sans. KCharselect displays runes
in all mentioned four fonts, OOo in none of them.

All my fonts are either installed from Mandriva's RPMs or imported from my
Windows Vista.

Maybe KCharselect and OOo just differ in approach to fonts and character
subsets? Anyway, it is quite confusing.

I rather doubt my fonts are incorrectly installed - it's usual install as
thousands people do (i.e. all Linux fonts. e.g mentioned Dejavu Sans and Linux
Libertine; other two I mentioned are imported from Windows also in usual way).

I rather suspect KCharselect and OOo act somehow differently displaying subsets
in fonts - and it seems OOo's acting is somehow inferior as it doesn't display
all KCharselect can.

I'm not an expert but if you could you may install some Mandriva release (last
official one is 2009.1), then install at least Dejavu and Linux Libertine
(though probably they are installed by default) and KCharselect and compare
them. As far as I can see, result is quite different.

Or rather I should say: I don't know which subsets e.g. Linux Libertine includes
but KCharselect shows some subsets which OOo doesn't.
