[amirc] What is KLINE?

2000-05-04 Thread Andrew Bruno

Hello Kyle and folks.

On 03-May-00, you wrote:

Speaking of which, does AmIRC still go into a loop if someone klines you
at the server? Ages ago I klined someone and he complained AmIRC locked

What does that mean?

Sorry for the ignorance, but I won't learn unless I ask. :)

  mailinglist server.

Yeah probably, or maybe it can be turned off in the config. One of the
subscribers has an email address that cannot be resolved anymore. So the
mail list software is sending an error message to everyone who posts
saying
 the email address is unreachable.

No, not at all - it's not the mailing list software generating the error, is
the mail server for the address that's bouncing.
It's supposed to bounce errors back to the mailing list server, since the
mailing list software correctly includes headers telling it to do that (so
that the list subscribers should never see bounces, or you'd normally get
loads...) but the receiving mail software is completely ignoring it and
replying to the original sender.

The only thing the list server can do is remove the offending address from
the list.
This happened on the Voyager list a little while back, I think, with the
same address...

Rob

Yees, but that only affects it at your end. I would like the channel to
see the colour.

Why? It's the text you type that should be interresting, not the color it
has. If you like colors so much, fine, but don't force everybody else to see
it as well!
You /have/ the option of sending colored text to the channel, just not the
option to set it as default when you send text.

The colors may look "pretty" on your machine, but it may not look as
"pretty" on everybody elses.

It would surely put you on my banlist.

Using single window mode doesn't affect the other people on IRC, colors /do/

GM screwed over people who rely on text-to-speech set ups to be able
GM to participate in IRC.
O. So blind ppl can use IRC, but if I want colours i should go to
ICQ/AIM??

Again, blind people using IRC doesn't cause any annoyance for other people
on the IRC.

Do as you like on your end, just don't bother everybody else with it, unless
they really want it.

If it REALLY bothers someone they can ask me to stop or change it. I have
encountered ppl with unreadable colours. I did not yell at them. I did not
ban them. I did not launch an air strike on their house. I simply asked them
to change it. They did.

Since when did asking politely become so hard to do?

As you are so obviously unaware, humans are not like machines. We like
friendly conversation or polite requests and prefer it to commands or attacks.

I someone really won't change their text colour you can always /ignore them.
Then you won't have to see their "annoying colours" at all will you?

TT It would surely put you on my banlist.

Good. I am 100% sure I would not like to be in your channels.

[-SNIP-]

You are asking for an option, which would make AmIRC all the more powerful
 and feature packed.

People who do not want/like colors do not have to use them.

Those who do not want to see them can use the option to not show color
codes. Pretty darn simple when you think about it.

Optionally, if someone uses colors, you can ask them nicely to stop, or
ban them, or what have you.

Believe me, those of you who insist on whining about colors on IRC are a
minority. What amazes me though, is that you would ramble on and on about
how you feel, when it doesn't matter since you have the power to disable
 the display of colors.

When other people ask for options which I do not feel I would ever use, or
might even annoy me if they were used in my channels, I don't speak up
trying to make sure those options are not added, and question why they are
even needed. But, maybe I will start. What a wonderful world we would have
if everyone spoke out against things which do not affect them.

Amen, amen and amen.

I cant quite grasp why people complain, whine and make it seem like the end
is near when people ask for features that will make AmIRC better, without
even affecting those complaining in any other way than that they dont have to use the
feature.

Single- or multiple-window mode doesn't affect anyone but that
single user; colors affect everyone in the channel(s) they're
used in.
