You have seen this post? (I assume so..)

http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/03/identifying-app-installations.html

This is important enough that someone should turn this into a library,
perhaps I will soonish?

As for whether or not the MAC is available, I believe that it may be
that it is available if the user has activated wifi during the time
they've had the phone on, but perhaps not available if they haven't
turned on the wifi since the device was booted. (This is a little
more than complete guess as I haven't read that code, but I feel like
that's what the answer might be from my experience with this...)

 protection scheme would be foiled.  I am distributing my app
 independently of the Market because the Market places a $200 cap on
 the price, so I needed to develop my own copy protection.  I have
 settled on license number keyed to a device ID, and my preferred
 device ID is the WiFi Mac address.  If the user does not have WiFi,
 then I am using the AndroidID.  But the AndroidID changes when the
 user updates his Android version, or does a hard reset.  Then I have
 to get involved and provide the customer with a new license number.
 This is a bother for both me and the customer.  I don't mind doing it
 in rare circumstances, but if I cannot reliably detect the presence of
 WiFi, then those circumstances will be way too common.  If I do detect
 that they have WiFi but it is turned off, my app does ask them to turn
 it on so we can fetch the Mac Address.  But I don't want to ask the
 user to turn on WiFi if his device does not have WiFi, hence my need
 for a reliable detection of WiFi capability.

Re: [android-developers] Why explicit need for Permissions to be specified in Manifest File

2012-02-26 Thread Kristopher Micinski
That's not entirely true.

The team who did this paper did a fairly simple static analysis for
determining permissions use, and they didn't really comment on how
much reflection they handled. But in general I don't think it's an
inherent shortcoming of static analysis to determine reflective calls.
(Especially since most of the time people who are using reflection
hardcode their strings, they don't do things like let the user input
some class name, then look it up, which makes the analysis fairly
standard.)

The ScanDroid [1] work does some string analysis to find things like
ranges of inputs for intents, etc...

Uhmthe root of the error is at that line 87 of your BTD...Activity.
What's at that line?

is it: SetBluetoothDevice pairedDevices = mBtAdapter.getBondedDevices(); ?
ant it might be that mBtAdapter is null (by reading the docs it says that
BluetoothAdapter.getDefaultAdapter() returns null when bluetooth is not

Maybe you are using the emulator to run this? (AFAIK the emulator doesn't

There are a number of reasons. The first is just simplicity.
Integrating a good enough static analysis to make permissions
inference technically feasible would be possible, but perhaps not that
useful. Consider a situation where a programmer uses an API call
which maps to some permission, but this call is in a piece of code
which can never be executed. The fact that it's dead code may be
highly nontrivial to ascertain. Another difficulty lies in the fact
that permissions don't always map onto calls: sometimes they map to
content providers, guards on intents, etc... So it's not really
possible without doing some very heavy static analysis to determine
the possible range of inputs to these intents is. Unfortunately
static analysis may be inherently imprecise to the point that you'd
have to assume that all permissions (which gate content providers)
were required when someone did a query to a content provider, for
instance.

In other words, the idea that you can statically determine permissions
is inherently incorrect: while it's probably technically possible,
it's a nontrivial area of static analysis and an active topic of
research..

 In the manifest, between the application and activity tags, I added

 I added the reparenting one first, tested it...force close. Then I
 re-read what you wrote above, and changed launchmode from standard (it
 wasn't specified, thus was the default) to singleTop. Still force
 closes on exit given the very specific sequence of events I listed
 earlier.

 So, I'm back to being confused again. :-(

 Here's a question: can I assume that installing from the Market, and
 using Open from there, pause, resume via icon, and exit will result
 in the same force close as side-loading does? Or am I most likely
 chasing a ghost...a non-issue that only affects it when side-loaded?
 I'm inclined to believe that if I'm seeing it, someone else will, too.

Re: [android-developers] Why explicit need for Permissions to be specified in Manifest File

2012-02-26 Thread Kristopher Micinski
Notice that I seemingly contradicted myself in my response to the
question and to Mark. I should point out that Mark's answer is
completely correct: people have a hard time with it, but I don't think
it's impossible (and a number of people have done such things for
similar uses of reflection, not necessarily permissions, however..)

 Basically looking for why android is designed for explicit permissions
 declaration.. when it can be automatically discovered at compiler time

Unfortunately
 static analysis may be inherently imprecise to the point that you'd
 have to assume that all permissions (which gate content providers)
 were required when someone did a query to a content provider, for
 instance.

 In other words, the idea that you can statically determine permissions
 is inherently incorrect: while it's probably technically possible,
 it's a nontrivial area of static analysis and an active topic of
 research..

2012-02-26 Thread Mohamed Gougam
yes it's:

 // Get a set of currently paired devices
SetBluetoothDevice pairedDevices = mBtAdapter.getBondedDevices();

So i wonder what's about it.

Just a question about the Log.e and Log.d

i added this:

if (D) Log.d(Tag, in onCreate());
if (D) Log.e(Tag, onCreate());
if (D) Log.i(Tag, onCreate());

Am i getting it right? because i can't see how the three are different (e:
Error, I: information, ) if it's me who has to specify the displayed
message...for example: in onCreate message.

 ant it might be that mBtAdapter is null (by reading the docs it says that
 BluetoothAdapter.getDefaultAdapter() returns null when bluetooth is not
 supported -
 http://developer.android.com/reference/android/bluetooth/BluetoothAdapter.html#getDefaultAdapter()
  ).
 Maybe you are using the emulator to run this? (AFAIK the emulator doesn't
 support bluetooth)

 so, just add a if (mBtAdapter != null) { ... rest of your code .. }

Re: [android-developers] Re: camera app FC/no FC dep. on startup method

2012-02-26 Thread YuviDroid
So, I played a bit with this Snapshot project. First of all, I'm using the
Motorola Xoom with ICS (4.0.3).
I tried following your steps (side load, press home, start from app drawer,
press back) and indeed I got the crash. What's really odd is that in this
scenario when you press 'back' it doesn't call surfaceDestroyed(), but
instead it calls surfaceCreated(), which doesn't really make sense.

Anyway, I tried adding a different launchMode to the Snapshot
activityandit worked! I used 'singleTop'.

activity android:name=.SnapShot

android:label=@string/app_name

android:launchMode=singleTop

intent-filter

action android:name=android.intent.action.MAIN /

category android:name=android.intent.category.LAUNCHER /

/intent-filter

/activity

Maybe it's a Honeycomb thing? I uploaded here the test apk which works for
me (again, on ICS): http://www.mediafire.com/?eylmq4aomurc9do

Let me know if it works also for you..

Ciao,
Yuvi

[android-developers] Android image orientation from gallery

2012-02-26 Thread drenda
Hi,
I've a problem getting orientation of an image chosen from gallery.
I'm using Exif data but not always the orientation value obtained from
Exif is correct!! Many times the value is not present in the image (it
depends also on the phone).

There is another way in order to get the orientation of an image? The
system image gallery seems detect correctly the orientation, how?

Thanks very much!

Re: [android-developers] Re: camera app FC/no FC dep. on startup method

2012-02-26 Thread Kostya Vasilyev

Launcher starts activites with:

Flags = Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK |
Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_RESET_TASK_IF_NEEDED

Action = Intent.ACTION_MAIN
Category = Intent.CATEGORY_LAUNCHER

You can see it in the logcat:

02-26 18:55:39.863 I/ActivityManager(  273): Starting: Intent {
act=android.intent.action.MAIN cat=[android.intent.category.LAUNCHER]
flg=0x1020 cmp=com.jim2/.ConfigureMain bnds=[125,273][238,431] }
from pid 673

The 0x1020 is exactly those two flags.

Market and Eclipse use intents with slightly different flags.

This is a launch from Market:

02-26 18:54:11.133 I/ActivityManager(  273): Starting: Intent {
act=android.intent.action.MAIN cat=[android.intent.category.LAUNCHER]
flg=0x1000 pkg=com.jim2 cmp=com.jim2/.ConfigureMain } from pid 3715

Compared to the Launcher intent, the
Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_RESET_TASK_IF_NEEDED is missing.

This is a launch from Eclipse:

[2012-02-26 19:01:16 - AquaMail] ActivityManager: Starting: Intent {
act=android.intent.action.MAIN cat=[android.intent.category.LAUNCHER]
cmp=org.kman.AquaMail/.ui.AccountListActivity }

No flags at all (the missing Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK is probably
due to the process getting replaced anyhow).

The documentation for this missing flag says:

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Intent.html#FLAG_ACTIVITY_RESET_TASK_IF_NEEDED

If set, and this activity is either being started in a new task or
bringing to the top an existing task, then it will be launched as the
front door of the task. This will result in the application of any
affinities needed to have that task in the proper state (either moving
activities to or from it), or simply resetting that task to its
initial state if needed.

Now, even if an app is launched from Market or Eclipse, when you press
Home, the current activity get its onPause and onStop called.

Getting back to your original issue, I'd try to find out why you see a
surface created, not destroyed.

Re: [android-developers] nested listview

2012-02-26 Thread Ted Scott
If I understand what you mean, then yes, except it is all handled in the
ExpandableListView. You provide 2 lists, via some adapter, one is the
parent list and the other a child list which you get by over-riding a
getChildren method, depending how your lists are obtained. (In an
implementation I did, I use a DB to back the lists, so I use a
SimpleCursorTreeAdapter and I override getChildrenCursor) Have a look at
the expandable list examples in the api demos, there are 3 data source
flavors in there.

i also tried creating dummy.html, where the main.xml is located, but then

[android-developers] Re: Drawable set on an ImageView ignores setBounds and reverts to original bounds on orientation change.

2012-02-26 Thread Kiran Rao
Anyone? I'd appreciate any pointers. I can't even figure out whether
this is a bug or a coding error.

On Feb 24, 10:49 am, Kiran Rao techie.curi...@gmail.com wrote:
 I've been struggling with this strange problem for quite some time. A
 brief summary of the issue is this:

 An ImageView's Drawable in portrait orientation with a certain bounds
 set on it, on changing orientation and returning to portrait, does not
 retain the set bounds. Instead it reverts to its original bounds. This
 is in spite of forcefully setting the explicit bounds on orientation
 change. Do note that any bounds that you later set on Click etc are
 obeyed.

 I worked around this by abandoning the ImageView in favor of a custom
 View object and setting the Drawable using drawBitmap() within
 onDraw(). But could anyone point out what I was doing wrong in the
 ImageView approach?

[android-developers] Re: Two listview

2012-02-26 Thread kalandar
hi hazim omies.
  I understood your code. But still i didn't understand what is
your need.
If you want to pass the clicked HashMap value to another activity
means you can use this code

  Intent in = new Intent(getApplicationContext(),
SingleMenuItemActivity.class);
  in.putExtra(mapvalue, map );

map is the object name of your HashMap.

or else you want to create another listview in the same activity means
let me know the xml values.
better explain your need clearly...

[android-developers] Re: intent Value

2012-02-26 Thread kalandar
hi,

if you want to pass the same HashMap value for two activity means
you can create the HashMap object in common static object.
like

class Common
{
public static HashMap map = new HashMap();
}

now you can use this map in your entire activity.
like Common.map.put(, );

otherwise you can pass the map object to

intent.putExtras(mapidentifier,map);

i hope this will help you...
