Hi Handal,

Thanks for your help. But what we have actually done is, we have defined 
our own XMLS for each object (PFA androidaccount.xml) and created our own 
api to display the layout with the fields defined in the XML.

So it is totally dynamic. In future if we want to change the layout we can 
just go and add/ remove/modify the XML to effect the layout which will 
avoid unnecessary code changes. 

This approach we have tested in Android 2.2 version but when installed in 
higher versions, layouts are not proper and even the fonts are changed.

Please let me know if am not clear.

[android-developers] External SD Card write permission in ice cream sandwitch

  Is any body know how to get write permission for external SD card in 
Android 4.0. I included write permission on Manifest file. While use 
Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory()
 it always get the Internal SD card. For me I need to save a huge amount of 
data which is better to save in the external storage area. Can any one help 
me for solve this issue.

uninstalled or upgraded will the service/broadcastreceiver be removed 
accordingly?
If yes, then it is good. If not, do we need to manage them during app 
version upgrade?

I would like to check from my app whether the device has WiFi connectivity,
but in order to do that, I must first find a way to get WiFi in the
emulator. Just going to *Settings - Wireless Networks - Wifi Settings *says
*Unable to start Wi-Fi*, it shows error (Wifi Error).

Can anyone help me please ?

[android-developers] USB debugging - device serial number ???????? OR APK Application was not installed

Hi:

I've found a few posts around the net which report variants of both these 
problems, but can't find a solution to either which works for me.

I'm new to Android, using Eclipse with the Android SDK on Ubuntu 12.04 
x64.  I'm trying to build initially for the HTC Wildfire, Android 2.3.3.  
My app is an unchanged clone of ODK Collect, an open-source XForms cilent, 
built for API level 10.  It runs ok in the 2.3.3 emulator, but not on the 
real device.  I've tried two ways of running it:

1: If I enable USB debugging and connect the Wildfire, the Android Device 
Chooser detects that there's something there, but it doesn't register the 
serial number (?) and Target: Unknown.  I can't choose it - OK 
is disabled.

2: If I build an APK, then transfer that to the phone and run it, the 
installation checks the permissions as normal and starts OK, but then just 
stops with the message Application was not installed.

Anyone have any suggestions to resolve either of these issues?

[android-developers] Noob Question - Nexus 7 with Mac OS X

Hi,
I have a *Nexus 7* and I'm on a *Mac*, (although I do have virtual Windows 
XP running as well)
I notice all tutorials for creating an app seem to be written for Windows 
7, and I'd like to stay in the Mac environment if I can.

I have installed the Android SDK for OS X.
And I have installed Eclipse for OS X.
But that's about as far as I got.

I simply want to do the hello world or other similar app tutorial.
Can anyone direct me to an *explicit* tutorial on how to get started? By 
explicit, I mean, click this button, now click that button for beginners.

[android-developers] Voice Talk in norwegian

Hi! I am not a developer. I am an end-user.
I hope this post is not in the wrong place. If so, forgive me.

I am a norwegian. And I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 with ICS.
I think that the VoiceTalk (tapping the home button twice) is awesome.
But Norway is a very small country (4 million people) so I fear that the 
VoiceTalk in Android will never be translated to norwegian.

But IF it were possible, I would give A LOT of my spare time if I in some 
way could help bringing VoiceTalk in norwegian to a reality.
I do not want money, I do not want fame. I just want VoiceTalk in norwegian.

Is there some way I can help making VoiceTalk in norwegian a reality?
Help me help Android! :)

[android-developers] Reading a Database

I am working on a specific project and am a little away from my usual romping 
grounds (C++).

I've been commissioned by some of my co workers to make an App for them to help 
them in their specific job.
 
In order to do this I need to write an App that takes 10 numerical values and 
compares them through a database and then displays the equal to or less than 
matches in a list.
Example: User inputs 10,10,10,0,0,0,0,0,0,20 user then hits go

New screen
output:
match1: item name and description match1 values: 10,10,9,0,0,0,0,0,0,10
match2: item name and description match2 values: 0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0
match3: item name and description match3 values: 10,10,10,0,0,0,0,0,0,20

I am sure you get the idea.

So my questions are as follows:

 Should I (can I) (is there a more efficient way in JAVA?) create a class for 
the items and load them up into a vector from a file(if i can even do that in 
an app) 

 Would it be better to just do an XML and read and compare directly from the 
XML if, so could you point me at a good resource on doing this.

 Or am I way over shooting and is there a very simple way.

[android-developers] OpenGL and Camera Preview - blending together gets “over saturated” color

I'm working on a new Galaxy S3 and found a problem that didn't occur on 
other phones like my old Galaxy S1 or the Galaxy S2 - which has almost the 
same GPU as the S3.
When drawing my OpenGL models on top of my camera image like this:

So the GLRenderer should be transparent. It actually is. It works fine for 
all the objects that are opaque as well as the background (where I see the 
image of the camera)

My problem is, when I make the pixels semi-transparent in the fragment 
Shader I get a weird result. The brightest pixels seem overexpose when 
blending together. And it looks like they got clamped after so the value 
that brighter than white - loosing probably the first bit - got dark again. 
So only the brightest pixels are affected. It happens even if I use a 
simple call like:

 gl_FragColor = vec4(clamp(textureColor.rgb * lightWeighting.xyz, 0.0, 1.0), 
 0.5);



So the actual GL-Fragment is clamped and I'm pretty sure it comes from the 
camera preview itself. Here is an image that describes my problem:

I get more and more convinced that it is an overflow for the values but 
how can I change this? By the way - perhaps it helps - this effect gets 
stronger the lower the alpha value of the fragment (the gl rendered one) 
is. So somehow it looks like something is compensating/normalizing the 
semi transparent values.

Is there any way of clamping both values together since in the Shader I 
can only clamp the actual rendered fragment somehow without asking for the 
camera preview values. :-(

[android-developers] UnsatisfiedLinkError, but only on Nexus 7

Hi,

I have an application which has worked for a user up till now.  But with 
the last release, they're getting crashes.  Looking at their submitted 
stack trace, it is a simple UnsatisfiedLinkError where the loadLibrary call 
fails to find the shared library.  I provide binaries for x86, armeabi and 
armeabi-v7a as of the last release.

I've tested the last release on:
- An x86 emulator (API level 10).
- An armeabi emulator (API level 10).
- An armeabi-v7a emulator (API level 16).

Due to the way I get limited error information from users, all I have is 
the stacktrace.  I don't have a Nexus 7 and cannot afford one, even if they 
were available in  my country (maybe they are for all I know).  I have no 
way to contact the user.

My best guess is that one of two changes in the last release caused the 
problem.  The first was specifying a target sdk version of 15, where before 
it was a default of the 8 the minimum sdk version is set to.   The second 
was compiling x86 and armeabi-v7a binaries in addition to the original 
default armeabi ones.  So either there's some sdk compatibility issue 
because of the target sdk version, or the Nexus 7 differs from the emulator 
in reality and has issues loading binaries.

Help?

[android-developers] Redraw errors when manually editing layout files.

Hi all

If I try to hand edit layout files in the editor, I get awful redraw 
errors.  That is, the text(/XML) editor renders a different line from what 
it is supposed to.  If I run the cursor up and down through the file, the 
lines change (redraw differently). Trying to edit the file by hand is 
extremely frustrating.  Does anyone else get this?

Surely it can't be just me, but web searches have failed to turn up any 
other reports.

I'm pretty sure it's not my eclipse because I have reinstalled and updated 
both eclipse and the ADT plugin and it happens for me in every version.

Is this a known problem and is there a solution? 

I'm on Win7 x64. Eclipse Indigo. ADT 20.0.2.  Java 1.6.30.

[android-developers] Android emulator with NO soft keyboard?

I want to test my app on an emulator that does NOT have any soft keyboard. 
basically I need to mimic a phone without a touch screen. How do I set that 
up? It seems no matter what I do, all of the emulated devices have an 
emulated touch screen and the emulated hardware keyboard doesn't seem to 
ever work.

[android-developers] Android Emulator would not load from the AVD manager

v been searching on google for this problem but came with no similar 
problem from anyone else, so there was no answer. I run the emulator from 
the AVD manager, the loading bar goes almost to the end and then the window 
disappears and no emulator loads up. Only the AVD manager stares back at 
me. Anyone knows what could the problem be?

I also have Java ME installed with Java SE, thats for a different platform. 
Could it be that Java ME is interfering? The emulator works fine on my home 
computer and there is no Java ME there, but at work it wouldn't load. The 
whole android SDK folders at work pc and at home pc are both same copy 
paste from my old home pc that I used to bring to work before.

P.S. I tried recreating the AVD, and even reinstalling the SDK.

Hi,

I recently started testing out scala on android by coding an android project 
(https://github.com/prashanthbala/scaladroid) using the android plugin for 
Scala (https://github.com/jberkel/android-plugin/wiki/getting-started)  
The compilation and create of .dex files using android:package-debug was taking 
about 2-3 minutes, which was pushing down my development speed a lot.  

So I tried to use, ProguardCache (https://github.com/banshee/ProguardCache) on 
sbt to reduce the build time. However, I am getting errors running the final 
android-package debug (after compile and proguard-cache-build) on sbt 

trouble writing output: Too many methods: 193353; max is 65536 .. dx: 
Nonzero exit value: 2 

due to the 16-bit limit on the number of method names for davlik.

My hunch is that either the proguard step is not treeshaking the libraries used 
completely or the final package-debug is not using the pruned versions of the 
libraries. 
The project still builds fine without proguardCache.

Wondering if my proguard settings in ./proguard.conf are wrong or if my 
Build.scala settings are conflicting with the process. 

I've spend quite some time trying to fix this, any help would be appreciated.

After some considerations the conclusion is - in order to fully utilize my 
Android phone and tablet (both from Samsung), I must learn some Android 
programming.

Please could someone clarify, what is the main difference between Online 
programming like Andromo, the one like http://www.buzztouch.com/? And of 
course, there is Android SDK, which seems most difficult for a beginner?

As I'm totally new to Android programming and programming at all. All my 
experiences  are until now limited more to computer hardware :-)

Which way suites best for a beginner whose first goal would be to create an 
app for collecting monthly power meter readings :-) ?

 

Below is description of the task to consider if these even support given 
task.

 

I have one account with 2 main readings (day and night) + 8 additional 
heaters consumption meters for local analyzing in MS Excel.

Every month first day I write numbers onto paper, then enter all to MS 
Excel and finally log into energy portal to register readings for monthly 
billing.

 

Plus I have also some other accounts just with 2 main readings - day and 
night.

 

Always only 2 main readings (day+night) will be sent for billing by SMS to 
local Energy supplier.

 

Objects I need are: 

1. Start page with dropdown menu for account selection

2. Buttons: next, go to end

3. 8 numeric Data entry field pages, which each one reading, displaying 
last reading until new is entered (How such object is named?)

Maybe I must limit app to one account only, else displaying previous 
reading requires probably too dedicated database lookup

 

4. Overview final result screen displaying all 6 readings with function 
buttons:

 

Function buttons on last screen are: 

1.Send SMS to predefined number(take 2 first readings and create SMS 
content C 000 A 000 D 00 N 00

(Customer ID, Agreement No, Day, Night)

 2. Send comma separated 6 readings to my Email for importing manually into 
MS Excel table.

 

All ideas and remarks are welcomed.

 So I switched to the command line tools.  On the command line (using the git 
 source repo), when trying to build and deploy it told me I needed bossac 
 and gave me a url to find it.  So I went and got it, but the OSX exe never 
 once recognized the board.  The bossac exe that comes with the IDE does work, 
 however, so I wedged that one into the command line build process.  The 
 command line build still had troubles finding the ADK headers and sourced 
 needed to build, so I had to copy all those manually into the clock demo 
 source tree, then I was finally able to build and deploy.
 
 I'm on OSX Lion on a Mac Mini if that makes any difference.

[android-developers] Having the user set the priority of an activity

Hi,
Just started with Andoid SDK. Working on a port from C++ to the SDK of an 
aircraft navigation_and_more system for android phones and tablets.
Have been Googling this question but I cannot find a clear answer.
I want to enable the user (aircraft pilot) to set the priority of the app 
very high. The reason is simple: when the user is flying and navigating, 
he/she doesn't want the app to be interrupted by mail messages or whatever 
'popups', even phone calls.
Does Android allow the user (possibly via my app) to do this?

 So the GLRenderer should be transparent. It actually is. It works fine for

 My problem is, when I make the pixels semi-transparent in the fragment
 Shader I get a weird result. The brightest pixels seem overexpose when
 blending together. And it looks like they got clamped after so the value
 that brighter than white - loosing probably the first bit - got dark again.
 So only the brightest pixels are affected. It happens even if I use a
 simple call like:

 gl_FragColor = vec4(clamp(textureColor.rgb * lightWeighting.xyz, 0.0, 1.0), 
 0.5);



 So the actual GL-Fragment is clamped and I'm pretty sure it comes from the
 camera preview itself. Here is an image that describes my problem:

 I get more and more convinced that it is an overflow for the values but
 how can I change this? By the way - perhaps it helps - this effect gets
 stronger the lower the alpha value of the fragment (the gl rendered one)
 is. So somehow it looks like something is compensating/normalizing the
 semi transparent values.

 Is there any way of clamping both values together since in the Shader I
 can only clamp the actual rendered fragment somehow without asking for the
 camera preview values. :-(

Its been a long time but as i can recall we dropped video tag and went
forward with Phonegap Media Plugin coz of following reasons:

1.  On 2.3 and below there was no sync in play time in fulllscreen and
embedded video seek bar. It was annoying.
2.  Poster resizing issue. We didn't spend much time on it but there are
some ways to fix it i guess.
3. On ICS and onwards video gets embedded. Embedded mode doesn't look good
on phones, its better to have Fullscreen mode for phones.


Other Ways than video tag:

Having a div with poster img and play button. Which ll launch a Video
Player in full through Phonegap bridge.
Cons : Was causing INVALID_STATE_ERR: DOM Exception 11 on Samsung Galaxy
Nexus (ICS Version) when we play video for second time.

Phonegap fulfilled all our purpose so with out wasting any more time we
went ahead with it.

There is no wifi in the emulator. The classes and the methods are all
there, but they're just stubs that fail when called.

You can mock WifiManager in your app, but ultimately, you will need a real
device.

I realized that one more change was needed to your code five seconds after
sending my first response :)

You are using this:

void updateAppWidget(int[] appWidgetIds, RemoteViews views)

which takes an int[] array of widget ids, but only one RemoteViews. Thus,
all your widget instances receive the same data, the last remote views that
gets built.

What you need to do is:

1 - Use void updateAppWidget(int appWidgetId, RemoteViews views), whch
updates one widget

2 - Change the loop structure to go something like this:

   for(int j = 0;j  appWidgetIds.length;j++){
RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(),
R.layout.widget_layoutmain);
Intent i = new Intent(context.getApplicationContext(),
BatteryProvider.class);
i.setAction(MyCode);

[android-developers] Back button show old removed dialog

Hi,

My app display a dialog and base on user input I remove the dialog and 
redisplay it to refresh some new values.
This works ok but I realise if user press back button it will reopen the 
previously opened dialog with old value.
How can I totally remove the dialog?

have you seen FileInputStream(String name) javadocs? if so are you
aware of the fact it can be used only with normal files stored in the
local file system?

That shouldn't happen. Show some code of how you're showing, removing, and

I'm using Debian Wheezy with a custom kernel, and have seen the first issue
before.

Try adding udev rules. Some devices seems to require this (while some
others can work without).

 I've found a few posts around the net which report variants of both these
 problems, but can't find a solution to either which works for me.

 I'm new to Android, using Eclipse with the Android SDK on Ubuntu 12.04
 x64.  I'm trying to build initially for the HTC Wildfire, Android 2.3.3.
 My app is an unchanged clone of ODK Collect, an open-source XForms cilent,
 built for API level 10.  It runs ok in the 2.3.3 emulator, but not on the
 real device.  I've tried two ways of running it:

 1: If I enable USB debugging and connect the Wildfire, the Android Device
 Chooser detects that there's something there, but it doesn't register the
 serial number (?) and Target: Unknown.  I can't choose it - OK
 is disabled.

 2: If I build an APK, then transfer that to the phone and run it, the
 installation checks the permissions as normal and starts OK, but then just
 stops with the message Application was not installed.

 Anyone have any suggestions to resolve either of these issues?

The class BroadcastReceiver defines the onReceive() method. Only during
this method your BroadcastReceiver object will be valid, afterwards the
Android system can recycle the BroadcastReceiver. Therefore you cannot
perform any asynchronous operation in the onReceive() method.

How do you do that?

Eclipse and ant both sign apps with a generic (generated) debug key, unless
requested to use your release key.

For the second issue, might want to check the logcat (adb logcat in a
console, or DDMS or Eclipse logcat panel) to see if it contains any clues.

Thanks! So you think it's just the logo and the colour scheme looks too 
similar to Chrome..?

Reading that link, do you think the use of Chrome in the app name is also 
what they dislike? It does say If your product is compatible with a Google 
product, make reference to that Google product by using the text for, 
for use with, or compatible with, and be sure to include the ™ symbol 
with the Google trademark. Example: for Google Chrome™...so maybe they 
are suggesting the app is renamed to something like Bookmarks for Google 
Chrome™..?

My suggestion is to get an Android development book. Many books have 
sections on how to set up Mac environment for development. Just browse 
through them first before purchase.

Absolutely. I am facing some weird issue. Firstly, I am able to launch 
instant of my app I put a Toast inside onCreate() and it get called if I 
launch the app twice. I don't know why this happen and I tried on emulator 
different version and real phone.

After some gooling, someone mentioned to put this in onCreate() and I tried 
it seems to work:

I also realized if I started my app and display dialog(a) and then 
dialog(b), if I start the app again with the abovementioned fix it will 
display where I left off which is dialog(b). Now, if I do a screen 
orientation change, it actually display dialog(a) instead of dialog(a) 
instead of dialog(b) which is before the screen orientation change. So I 
think it is no exactly the dialog problem but some problem with the setting 
or activity.

This is my 3rd Android app, I see nothing unusual in my code. Any 
suggestion what to investigate or which part of the code I can post here 
for assistant.

As long as your tutorials are using Eclipse, you'll have to do the exact
same steps. I've done development using eclipse on Ubuntu, Windows and
currently Mac, and apart from some different setups like USB debugging,
they are exactly the same.

[android-developers] position the different image views

imageviews relatively  with centre image view.And i have done it with using
FrameLayout.ImageViews look fine in Samsung S3,but in samsung galaxy Y the

[android-developers] Media Scanning Completed Toast message appears only sometimes

But I get the toast message Media Scanning Completed only sometimes
and sometimes it does not appear. Could somebody explain why we get

It's not extra, it was put there as part of the build process.  I think 
that the adv-dev team are in the process of implementing manifest merging 
when you use library projects, so they need to put the output manifest into 
one of the target directories.

The contents of /bin and /gen get delete when/if you clean your project.

Hi,

   It looks like Media Scanning completed toast message comes
whenever the device is rooted. I find that the toast message comes
when I connect the device to a computer and I get this message
Connected as a Media Device. Is that right?

  Sometimes when the device is not connected to a computer and I have
the gallery opened and add new videos and try to refresh it through
the above code:

sendBroadcast(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_MOUNTED,
Uri.parse(file:// + Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory(;

I get this toast message SDcard inserted. gallery is closed to
scanning media files on SDcard. Is there any way to check if the
gallery is closed and prevent the gallery refresh that I call in code?

I am using Samsung Galaxy SII to check.

Hi,

my app was removed with this reason:  Alleged copyright infringement 
(according to the terms of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act).

My app is a list of free video url, a sort of bookmarks list that when the 
user click on it open a video player with that url.
So it just takes video url and loads it in a video player app.

I always used official free streams url, but an Italian company opened 
a DMCA practice against my app because I open their urls (that are free and 
public, www.rai.tv)

Is this a copyright infringement? I never streamed something, I always used 
official free and public streams and I interpreted my app as a list of 
public links. It is wrong?

I searched on wikipedia about DMCA and found 
this:

but I think this is not my case.

i am measuring velocity in meter/seconds and miles/hour
using acceleration and digital compass ...but it giving 0.00mps
only.even acceleration and orientation changed.

please how come i can get velocity or speed of sensors..
