A news show is only shown once, and only locally, so there does not seem to be any economies of scale or savings in transaction costs in contracting it out. Secondly, there is a pyschological identification between news programs and viewers that is not present in other programs. TV is, after all, a media for news, and if it is contracted out, then it is not really the station's news presentation, and thus there would be a less personal relationship with the station. That is why national broadcasts also do their own news. It is e.g. CBS news, which creates an emotional bond with CBS and its anchormen. Fred Foldvary = [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk shows are mixed: Oprah is done by a Chicago tv station but is syndicated. Late nite shows are sometimes syndicated - like Arsenio. Good Morning America is national and tied to the network. > Local talk shows are also done by stations, no? I was unclear - few game shows are local but stations can choose to drop a game show. Soaps, however, seem to be standard - the network produces soap operas. > What's an example of a local soap opera or game show? Fabio

Local news
Why is local news done by television stations when most other local programming (soap operas, game shows, talk shows) is contracted out? Or to phrase the question differently: why do local tv stations do *any* of their programming? Fabio
