as much as people with AR's music through a live show called 'Rahmania'. They
not only perform the songs, but also try to inculcate some rare anecdotes,

This definitely makes a difference, as it helps people to understand AR's

A.R. RAHMAN tells Pratim D. Gupta why the sky is the limit with Mani
Ratnam, why he picked Luka
chhupi, Chhan chhan and Khalbali for the Oscars, his UN song, making music
with Nelly Furtado
and more
Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in Guru

What is it about Mani Ratnam that makes you reserve your best for him?

I think it's the vibe. The vibe is very important when two creative people
work together. It is
not about egos. It is about working towards the same goal, reaching the
same result. Then
again, I don't reserve anything special for him (laughs). It so happens.
It's how you get
inspired by each other.

What is the process? How do the two of you approach a film score?

It's just that once the film is decided he gives opportunities to come up
with ideas. Not just
me, whether it's the cameraman, the actors, everyone. He pushes the ball
in your court and then
you go about working on it. Then he comes back when things need to be
tweaked around, to be
made better.

This is very unlike certain other directors, who would say: I want this
and I don't want
anything else. There you already have the boundaries. Here, with Mani,
the sky is the limit.
You can think about weird things also and he always wants to do work which
is groundbreaking.
It's not that you have to work hard or anything. It just comes naturally
with him.

Yuva, your last work with him, had a very Bengali setting. What about
Guru?

It's actually more Gujarati. It's more close to Mumbai than anything else.
We wanted to do one
song like Govinda ala re kind of thing but that didn't fit into the
script. So we used that
sound and feel in the first song which is Barso re megha megha. That's
where all the big drums
came in from. So, it was done for a different song but it fitted into
that. It's all Gujarat.
So there was no problem.

Mayya mayya is on the lines of Hamma hamma and Chaiyya chaiyya. When you
create an item number
like that do you keep the popularity aspect in mind?

In the sub-conscious mind you would want the song to become popular.
That's the whole reason of
doing a number like that. People should sing and enjoy. So we put in all
into that. For Mayya
mayya, I took the hook from a man who was shouting mayya mayya on the
road when I was on the
road to Haj. The word mayya means water in Arabic and he was selling
water. Then later in
Mayya mayya we have even added some Gujarati lines because of the
characters present in the
picturisation.

Tere bina is your tribute to the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan…

Yes, when I was doing the soundtrack of Guru, I was listening to
Nusratsaab's Sajna tere bina.
And I thought there was no such song which had come into Hindi films. You
know in terms of the
feel. So I thought it would be great to use a song like that in this film.
And I even used the
same kind of lyrics, Tere bina… and it fell into the whole groove in a
very different way for
the film. But I would say the inspiration was definitely Nusratsaab's
music and his style of
singing.

You didn't know a word of Hindi when you started out. These days, you seem
to contribute to the
lyrics…

(Laughs) It's good to work with people who are filled vessels like
Gulzarsaab. They are so calm
and yet the little, little things they do are fantastic. Tere bina is so
simple the way he's
written it. Yet it complements the whole setting so beautifully. And he
never tries to do
something which is great and show the world what he can write. It's all
from the heart.

Why get someone like Bappi Lahiri to sing the Guru title track?

I was at an award function in 2005 and I heard him sing on stage and I
found his vocals to be
very dynamic. We intended Abhishek (Bachchan) to sing that song in the
film but then he was
busy. And I had to go abroad when he was free. So Gulzarsaab and I were
talking who we can try
out and he said why don't you use Bappi for the song. It was a great idea
actually. He just
came from Calcutta and sang the song in two hours flat.

How would you compare the soundtrack of Guru to your last work with Mani
Ratnam, Yuva?

The music of Guru is about rediscovering life. Yuva was actually more like
item numbers, like
fillers rather than actually parts of a film. But here it is all bound
together, in the way
Jaage hai becomes the backbone of the film. Yuva started apologetically —
ok, we will also have
songs. But then here Mani said from the start: Let's have songs in the
story. This is more
like him.

Coming to the song you have done for the United Nations, was Pray for me
brother your idea?

I made the song first because I have been feeling very strongly about this
for quite some time.
You know India is really coming up as a country but at the same time you
are having these

  Dear friends,

When we set out to raise funds for the A.R.Rahman Foundation as a gift for
ARR's birthday, I
had only planned to send him an image of the cheque by email and the
physical cheque only by
courier. But when the contributions soared past anything I had hoped for,
I felt it was only
fair that it be handed over in person. And so, I set out to Chennai on
Saturday morning not
knowing if I would actually be able to meet him. Though by now, we have
seen enough evidence of
his simplicity I imagined being stopped by security guards even before I
could let him know,
all of which was completely unwarranted.

Thanks to the never-say-no graciousness of ARR and Vijay's entreaties, I
had the good fortune
of being your representative at the birthday celebrations of the person
whom many of us deify.
Far from being met with for a few seconds and summarily dismissed, I was
treated with the same
affection, care and love by everyone at his home and studio as were many
of the key
personalities of the industry who made their way to his abode to greet him
in person.

I made my way to his home with some navigational aid from Vijay to only
find a bunch of busy
workers setting up the place in preparation for lunch. When I said that I
had to meet ARR Sir,
I was asked to wait in the first floor of the studio which is the building
right in front of
his home. I made my way there to find many people doing the same, some of
them being Mr.
Srinivasa Krishnan of Global Rhythms, Sridhar Subramaniam of Sony BMG,
Naresh Iyer, executives
from WorldSpace and Saregama and producers from the Tamil industry whom I
did not recognize. I
could see gifts of flowers from a host of people from the industry -
Subhash Ghai, Udit and
Deepa Narayan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Bharat and Kanika, Chinmayee, Radio
Mirchi, Radio City were
some names that I managed to spot amidst the sea of bouquets in the
studio. ARR's right hand
men Noell James, Sivakumar, Swamidorai, Faiz and H. Sridhar were also in
attendance.

We were soon joined by ARR's mother, daughters, son, wife and sisters and
others in the family.
I soon realized that simplicity and humility runs through every brick and
body in his home and
studio. ARR still hadn't turned up and his mother insisted that we must
have lunch and we were
ushered back into his home where ARR joined us. Soon director Shankar and
family, Kathir,
Krishna (of SOK), Praveenkanth made their way in. After lunch we made our
back to the studio,
were ARR took us to a large studio room on the 2nd floor and screened the
video of Pray For Me
Brother. I am still searching for words to describe the multiple
exhilarating emotions that
passed through me as I watched the video. Nothing we have heard so far in
the live performances
truly captures the brilliance of the recorded song. Who else, but ARR,
could have an Indian
classical harmony accompanying a rap segment?

Following this, both ARR and his son Ameen, who also celebrates his
birthday on the same day,
cut the cake jointly. While his son wanted to cut his special 'Spiderman'
shaped cake, ARR
decided his simpler cake was more appropriate :-)

Coming to the crux of my visit, it was the time after the birthday cake
was distributed and
everyone was leisurely seated around the studio that I chose to hand the
cheque over to ARR. I
wish I could say, 'Did we spring a surprise on ARR or what!' But ARR
instead sprang a surprise
on me! He looked visibly moved and said 'I have been telling these folks
what you guys have
been doing.' I went, Huh? And his response was, 'I was on the group last
night and saw all
these messages about a collection drive. You guys are increasing my
responsibilities now'. I
quickly assured him that he could count on our support in anything that he

then handed the cheque over to his mother and introduced me to the rest of
the people there.

He then asked, 'Don't you want a picture?'. I joked, 'I would like you to
say a few words or
else all the folks would think I made off with the money'. He laughed and
agreed. I told him I
could wait till the studio was a little quieter. He said fine and went on
to have a private
conversation with Shankar and then moved away to supervise some dubbing
work for Guru that was
underway at the studio.

Before he left, I mustered the courage to ask him if there was any way I
could get another look
at Pray For Me Brother, to which his reaction was, 'Of course, why even
ask?' and asked Abdul
from the studio to screen it for me in one of the smaller rooms.

I was waiting around the studio for a while when a Jaya TV crew trudged in
for a sound bite.
Soon thereafter he came down and shot

 Ratnam, why he picked Luka
chhupi, Chhan chhan and Khalbali for the Oscars, his UN song, making
 music with Nelly Furtado
 and more
Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in Guru

What is it about Mani Ratnam that makes you reserve your best for him?

I think it's the vibe. The vibe is very important when two creative
 people work together. It is
not about egos. It is about working towards the same goal, reaching the
 same result. Then
again, I don't reserve anything special for him (laughs). It so happens.
 It's how you get
 inspired by each other.

What is the process? How do the two of you approach a film score?

It's just that once the film is decided he gives opportunities to come
 up with ideas. Not just
me, whether it's the cameraman, the actors, everyone. He pushes the ball
 in your court and then
you go about working on it. Then he comes back when things need to be
 tweaked around, to be
 made better.

This is very unlike certain other directors, who would say: I want this
 and I don't want
anything else. There you already have the boundaries. Here, with Mani,
 the sky is the limit.
You can think about weird things also and he always wants to do work
 which is groundbreaking.
It's not that you have to work hard or anything. It just comes naturally
 with him.

Yuva, your last work with him, had a very Bengali setting. What about
 Guru?

It's actually more Gujarati. It's more close to Mumbai than anything
else.

You know in terms of the
feel. So I thought it would be great to use a song like that in this
film. And I even used the
same kind of lyrics, Tere bina… and it fell into the whole groove in a
 very different way for
the film. But I would say the inspiration was definitely Nusratsaab's
 music and his style of
 singing.

You didn't know a word of Hindi when you started out. These days, you
 seem to contribute to the
 lyrics…

(Laughs) It's good to work with people who are filled vessels like
 Gulzarsaab. They are so calm
and yet the little, little things they do are fantastic. Tere bina is so
 simple the way he's
written it. Yet it complements the whole setting so beautifully. And he
 never tries to do
something which is great and show the world what he can write. It's all
 from the heart.

Why get someone like Bappi Lahiri to sing the Guru title track?

I was at an award function in 2005 and I heard him sing on stage and I
 found his vocals to be
very dynamic. We intended Abhishek (Bachchan) to sing that song in the
 film but then he was
busy. And I had to go abroad when he was free. So Gulzarsaab and I were
 talking who we can try
out and he said why don't you use Bappi for the song. It was a great
 idea actually. He just
came from Calcutta and sang the song in two hours flat.

How would you compare the soundtrack of Guru to your last work with Mani
 Ratnam, Yuva?

The music of Guru is about rediscovering life. Yuva was actually more
 like item numbers, like
fillers rather than actually parts of a film. But here it is all bound
 together, in the way
Jaage hai becomes the backbone of the film. Yuva started apologetically
 — ok, we will also have
songs. But then here Mani said from the start: Let's have songs in the
 story. This is more
 like him.

Coming to the song you have

[arr] And, The Bollywood Screen award goes to…

2007-01-08 Thread Mohd Nash
The 13th Annual Screen awards were given away in
Mumbai on the 6th of January and the winners list gave many a reason to
celebrate. There were no surprises for the best part of the awards night, but
there were one or two awards that went contrary to expectations.

Best Movie:

No surprises. There were only two real contenders. Rang De Basanti and Lage
Raho Munna Bhai. Lage Raho Munna Bhai walked away with the honors.

Best Director:
If Munna Bhai got the best movie, then RDB was not to be left behind.
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra bagged the award.

Best Story:

Lage Raho Munna Bhai scores number two. Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijith Joshi
share the award.

Best Screenplay:

RDB comes back for its second. Rensil De’silva and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
share the award.

Best Actor:
The first award to go to someone not associated with RDB or Munna Bhai.
Hrithik Roshan gets the award for his performance in Kkrish.
Best Actress:

The first and the only big surprise, everyone expected Bipasha Basu to bag the
award for Corporate. But the jury seemed to think differently. Kareena Kapoor
won her first big award in a long time for Omkaara.

Best Actor in a supporting role:
This guy must be the most electrifying ‘Circuit’ the film industry has had in
a long time. Arshad Warsi, for playing the most lovable gangster in Lage Raho
Munna Bhai.

Best Actor in a negative role:

A cakewalk of sorts for Saif Ali Khan; he is winning everywhere this year, for
his performance in Omkaara.

Best Actress in a supporting role:

One award that many had not chanced predicting. Veteran Kirron Kher for playing
Aamir Khan’s mother in RDB.

Best Actor in a comic role:

A bit off a surprise; Shreyas Talpade winning his first big award for his role
in Nagesh Kukunoor’s Dor.

Best Background Music:

Well, no prizes for guessing. A.R.Rahman for Rang De Basanti.

It must have been really unfair for Sanjay Dutt to have to walk away empty
handed after his wonderful performance in Lage Raho Munna Bhai; he received a
Critic’s Special award. So did Ayesha Takia for her role in Dor.

Siddharth registered his presence with an award for the most
promising male newcomer. Kangana Ranaut was given the most promising female
newcomer for Gangster and Woh Lamhe.
The disappointments of the night: Aamir Khan left high and dry after a
wonderful 2006 and the Bacchhans totally absent from the awards list. Thus fell
the curtains on what has been Bollywood’s best year in this millennium.

Scoop- `Sivaji` sold!
By Moviebuzz | Monday, 08 January , 2007, 22:07
*The first official sale of Sivaji distribution rights has taken place...*

Finally a year after the film was launched, Rajnikanth's Shankar directed
AVM produced *Sivaji* theatrical rights for the state of Kerala has been
sold ! It is the first official reported sale of the most eagerly awaited
film of the year.

The buyer is Palakkad Govindan of GSR combines a veteran distributor of
Tamil films in Kerala. And the price is an unheard and whopping Rs 3.10Crore!

Govindan had to register the distribution sale of the film with the powerful
Kerala Film Distributors Association (KFDA) in Kochi. KFDA had put forth a
new rule from Jan 1, 2007 that Tamil films cannot release simultaneously
with Tamilnadu in Kerala.

This rule was made to curb the growing popularity of Tamil films. Though
officially KFDA had put the blame on the habit of prints reaching late in
Kerala due to financial problems faced by Tamil producers who postpones
releases in the last minute!

Anyway KFDA had exempted distributors of Tamil films seeking simultaneous
release mainly Pongal films from the new rule. Along with distributors of *
Pokiri* and *Aalwar*, Govindan too applied for a simultaneous release of *
Sivaji* and the release date he has been given to KFDA is May 11 or June 8!

Govindan also produced a sale letter from producers of *Sivaji* that he has
the rights for the film for the state of Kerala. Hence KFDA has allowed the
film to have a simultaneous release in Kerala along with its Tamilnadu
release.

Meanwhile *Sivaji* sales for Rs 3.10 Crore has created a tremor in the
trade. The films of Mammootty and Mohanlal, the superstars of Kerala are
made for less than 3 Crore! In fact Antony Perumbavoor the producer of
Mohanlal's Christmas hit *Baba Kalyani* had made it at a cost of Rs 2.75Crore!

The highest ever paid for a Tamil film distribution rights for Kerala was
for Vikram's *Anniyan* which was sold for Rs 1.40 Crore. And it was the
highest collecting Tamil film in Kerala that made a distributors share of Rs
2 Crore.

Remember that the most popular Tamil hero in Kerala is Vikram and Vijay and
not Rajnikanth. So why pay Rs 3.10 Crore for *Sivaji*? According to sources
close to Palakkad Govindan, the hype and hoopla surrounding the film, plus
the Rajni-Shankar combo has made him buy the distribution rights.

Added to that Govindan a big fan of Rajnikanth and Shankar has distributed
many of their hits in the past. Even *Boys* was purchased by Govindan for Rs
80 Lakhs and it went on to get a distributors share of Rs 1.40 Crore!

[arr] I like Aashiq banaya aapne: ARR

2007-01-08 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
‘I like Aashiq banaya aapne’
While some may criticise Himesh Reshammiya’s style of composing, A R Rahman
tells Deepali
Dhingra that he actually likes some of his music

There are many ways to describe AR Rahman — hugely successful, genius,
modest, low profile.
Add to that list — a great sense of humour! The music maestro, who turned 40
yesterday, has
recently showcased his first ever English rendition Pray for me brother, to
create awareness
about poverty in the world.
What is the idea behind the song ‘Pray for me brother’?
The song is an anti-poverty anthem written by Blaze and me. I have sung the
song. Today,
the whole world is looking at India in terms of growth and development. But
it’s also a fact
that in a country where we have some of the richest people, there are farmers
who are forced to
commit suicide because of poverty. This song is a starting point from my side.
You have had a very successful musical career so far. What’s the one thing that
you have learnt
in these years?
I think the one thing that keeps re-instating itself is being true to
yourself. There’s a
conscience within everyone and if one is in equilibrium with one’s conscience,
that’s what
counts.
You crossed an important milestone of your life when you turned 40 on January
6. Do you think
age has anything to do with turning towards the immaterial?
Strangely, my whole youth was spent with people who were in their 40s. I
started working
when I was around 14 -15 years old. I think if you’re an artist, you’re born
with a soft heart.
There has to be something beyond money that has to attract you.
As a music composer, you have been hugely successful but don’t you think you
have not exploited
your full potential as a singer?
I agree. As a singer, I got acceptance with Vande Mataram. Guru is probably
the first time
I have done a romantic duet, something I have been trying to avoid (laughs).
Guru’s music is being appreciated by everyone. Why is it that when you pair up
with Mani
Ratnam, the audience always expects a great score?
I think it works two ways. People look forward to the music so there is
pressure on us to
deliver. Secondly, there is a certain chemistry between Mani Ratnam and me
which plays a great
role.
Among the current crop of music composers, whose music do you listen to?
There are loads of young composers who have the spark in them. Shankar,
Ehsaan and Loy’s
music is great. Vishal Shekhar’s stuff and Kailash Shekhar’s music is good.
Even some of Himesh
Reshammiya’s stuff is good, although some people say his style is repetitive. I
like the song
Aashiq Banaya Aapne.
You have always maintained a low profile. Any particular reason?
One reason is that I live far away (smiles). Second, it’s better to put my
energies into my
work rather than just talking about it.
