Naked ARS (was: The ~! for filter names)
I really liked seeing your request Ray, I am totally behind it. Call me old-fashioned but Remedy will always be a great IDE for building a strong workflow engine. BMC just happens to sell a packaged application that runs on the platform. Hell, I didn't even know that you couldn't just buy ARS anymore. I assumed that would always be an option because why cut off a potential customer by making them pay for apps they don't want? -Rick -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Ray Gellenbeck Sent: Friday, March 06, 2015 5:28 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: The ~! for filter names It's all good folks, I admit I was having a lazy moment as it had been so long since I used it that I could not remember the exact syntax, could not find it in the wiki-style online docs (try searching for it, won't work) and asked here to be sure and get nudged to the proper syntax, which worked as a post came in about the time I downloaded my 7.6.x master index and looked it up there. Requirements Doc
All, I'm training up a newbie on Remedy Development, and we have reached the point where I think he's ready for a 'test'I remember going through my 7.x RAC class, and they gave us a small 'requirements doc' for a fairly simple, yet complex enough application that needed to be built...the guys that were in the class with me all built different applications of course, but they all met the application...it was a good exercise and helped hone the blade so to speak on all of our skills...I was wondering if anyone happened to have something like that laying around that I would be able to use It doesn't need to be related to any particular industry, etc...just a couple of pages of requirements for an app that requires a few forms, and some description of functionality, but of course, not how the functionality needs to be built If anyone is willing to send me some stuff, either on or offline, I would appreciate it. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years

Re: MyIT/SmartIT First Impressions
Thanks, I had forgotten that I had read about the second one being a problem before writing up my impressions. I read it in the documentation but hadn't actually set anyone outside of the Remedy team up to use SmartIT yet, but I agree completely. There's no reason to require elevating people's permissions for SmartIT. We already have a problem with people creating duplicate People records in a Proposed state because they don't feel like doing a search for some reason. Rolling that out to everyone would probably just make the People data worse. Another I can't believe I've forgotten this and can't find it in the docs post... Wasn't there a function that took a string and, presuming they were numbers, let you drop the integer equivalent into an int field? something like IntField=INTEGER($CharField$) I see currency conversion fields, but no text-to-number or number-to-text fields, and I know at least one direction will give you a mismatch error if you try just shoving one into another. Re: Naked ARS (was: The ~! for filter names)
Thanks. The whole point was that some people don't even KNOW that the engine is, well, an engine unto itself. There seems to be a trend (marketing?) to present the image that Remedy is ONLY CMDB/ITSM. It's always challenging to explain to customers that those are just apps running on a (very nice) workflow engine underneath. I'm all for canned apps where they make sense. Ease of upgrade path, support, etc etc. However, small steps seem to keep happening in the product evolution over the last few versions to slowly close off the custom-build path and I'd just like to ask for the server/engine to be made available *without* the suite. As great (or not great) as anyone might feel the suite is, there are plenty out there who want something simpler, or more modular, or (insert complaint here). It's part of why other products (especially those that start with S and end with W) get a lot of migration. There needs to be more flexibility. It also lets you push back on customizers from a support perspective. It won't be quite as ridiculous to have support tell you that's been customized, we don't support it because if you want custom, you should buy the naked product and build your own. I'm not pretending it's is any big magical answer. The request was really just to speak to a mindset to say quit forcing one solution as if it is the right answer for everyone. Bring back some choice. Now if you've pitched Galileo (ITSM/CMDB v9) to customers and they don't like it, make this Plan B, a workflow engine platform where you can roll your own. Plenty won't like that either, but some do already and others will going forward, and it would be nice not to have to install all the ITSM spagetti if it's not going to be used. Make a modular installer where base is ONLY the engine and User/Group tables. Add some option checkboxes for Email Engine, Mid-Tier, Preferences, and other foundation elements some will still want in a custom build, BUT OTHERS WON'T. 15 up-votes so far in just a couple days. Re: Naked ARS (was: The ~! for filter names)
AMEN! I can't belive how short sighted bmc has become in regard to pushing itsm/cmdb and the rest of the licensed oob apps. Especially at the expense of pushing out custom development (essentially not supporting it). The true irony, in my opinion, is that in the decade+ that we've been struggling with converting the aruser GUI paradigm to a Web interface, the world has come full circle. Today, it's all mobile apps, and Web interfaces are on the way out. Static dimension, single window grid layouts are back in a huge way. I know what I could do with a naked arserver, and an aruser client that works on ios and android. With a few tweaks to the GUI elements to make them mobile friendly and client side plug-ins to give access to the camera, accelerometer, messaging framework and the rest ... holy moses, I know exactly what I could do with that! Change the world. That's what. On Mar 6, 2015 11:42 AM, Ray Gellenbeck ray.gellenb...@redmangollc.com wrote: Thanks. LJ, I'm not sure if this is something you're looking for, but I currently have an enhancement request from one of my users to modify the email function (located under function on left side navigation panel) in tickets to allow for canned messages. Many teams that are fulfilling requests have messages to send formatted in a specific way with a specific message and want to send during the setup/completion of the requests. So the idea would be to create a form where the various teams can add/modify their canned messages and then have it selectable from a menu on the email dialog box. In this example, your junior develop would have to create a form, menu, active links and buttons. Re: Requirements Doc
One of the tests I took, was to build a record data base. Yes I said record. I remember it had to have the speed (33.3/78/45), all the info on the album, the ability to import from the record DB that was on line). Also be usable with the old palm pilot interface. hbr From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Rick Cook Sent: Friday, March 06, 2015 12:43 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: [arslist] Requirements Doc ** I always used to assign new developers to build a bug tracking application. Hi, Ray: Can you repost the link here for your idea? If I haven't already, I will definitely vote it up. Michelle -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Ray Gellenbeck Sent: Friday, March 06, 2015 11:43 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Naked ARS (was: The ~! for filter names) Thanks. I think I hit a nerve ;) (/endsoapbox) ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years -- This message, and any attachments, is for the intended recipient(s) only, may contain information that is privileged, confidential and/or proprietary and subject to important terms and conditions available at http://www.bankofamerica.com/emaildisclaimer. Re: Requirements Doc
Yea, what I'm looking for is a doc that says 'I need an application built, I want to store these 5 attributes, and this is what I want to store in them, I want to be able to search on these 2 fields, where what I'm searching on could be anywhere in the field, blah blah blah I'm not looking for an enhancement requirements doc to an existing applicationjust a simple two or three page requirements doc for a 'sample' application that I don't need to create myselfI certainly could create such a document...but I'm just trying to see if anyone has one laying around from a class they took, or something similar. If a CI is In Inventory, it's not deployed, and to BMC, it is still owned, managed, and controlled by the company, not a group individual.
