So I resorted to using the BMC Communities to post some of the pictures I
took at the WWRUG. Find it at..

quite crude indeed... There is no album function on BMC community (sadly).
We use flickr to upload our photos
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/88660367@N05/sets) since wwrug12 because there
is a nice sync functionality on Iphoto but well, since you don't really like
online photo sharing sites...

I wouldn't consider flickr or YouTube the permanent/final location for your
files. They are great for sharing. Let them do their compression and you
still keep the originals like you normally do. Honestly I don't want to
wait for your 60mb .NEFs to download to view them :)

For videos youtube should work nicely.
There shouldn't be any time limit as before. I uploaded a 17 minutes + in
1080p movie (2.5 GB+ file size) during the wwrug:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUTu5xswkd0

If memory serves, I just had to go into my youtube account and said I wanted
to unlock the 15 minutes limit (channel parameter- longer videos), something
like that, I see it in French :p :

If you don't use an external service and link to it I say create a document.

BMC Communities documents image file size limitations:

Maximum file size: 2.0 MB. Also, please note that images larger than 1600px
wide or 900px tall will be scaled to fit those limits in your content.

Even my 6 year old Nikon that I carry around on road trips (such as the RUG)
creates images larger than that. So that's clearly not an option. However I'll
try to work around that and let the engine scale it down and see how they turn
out.

I know! That's why I had sent screenshots to the list instead of the actual
picture which reduces its size to a few KBs :-)

BMC Communities documents image file size limitations:

Maximum file size: 2.0 MB. Also, please note that images larger than 1600px
wide or 900px tall will be scaled to fit those limits in your content.

Even my 6 year old Nikon that I carry around on road trips (such as the RUG)
creates images larger than that. So that's clearly not an option. However
I'll try to work around that and let the engine scale it down and see how
they turn out.

I actually used Photoscape http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php to
scale down the pictures to post it to communities so it does not loose too
much quality instead of relying on whatever communities uses to scale them
down.. It's a great tool that compares to Adobe Photoshop head to head..

These are some of the few that I posted there..

2013-10-08 Thread Joe D'Souza
If they have increased it to as much as 200 MB / picture, then I have not
used flicker for a very very long time! The very first time I had wanted to
try it and found that they use a compression method that you could loose
most of your EXIF information, I didn't even bother creating an account. I
prefer storing my pictures in a NEF format so I can play around with it if
need be although most of the time I prefer to keep them untouched by photo
editing software. I tend to use photo editing software for very primary
tasks like captioning them, and in case my sensor caught a mole, to remove
that out, considering I have a old digital camera.

I'll let you'll know where I end up hosting them.

The flickr free account though sounds good enough, the limit for a picture

For example you have this picture:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88660367@N05/10113207695/in/set-721576362405414

That exists in a lot of versions
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/88660367@N05/10113207695/sizes/l/in/set-721576
36240541474/), and also the original size (5184x3888 for 6.3 MB):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88660367@N05/10113207695/sizes/o/in/set-7215763
6240541474/
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2859/10113207695_f4bab96dae_o_d.jpg
And on this picture you still have the EXIF.

Laurent.

2013-10-08 Thread Joe D'Souza
BMC Communities documents image file size limitations:

Maximum file size: 2.0 MB. Also, please note that images larger than 1600px
wide or 900px tall will be scaled to fit those limits in your content.

Even my 6 year old Nikon that I carry around on road trips (such as the RUG)
creates images larger than that. So that's clearly not an option. However
I'll try to work around that and let the engine scale it down and see how
they turn out.

I wouldn't consider flickr or YouTube the permanent/final location for your
files. They are great for sharing. Let them do their compression and you
still keep the originals like you normally do. Honestly I don't want to
wait for your 60mb .NEFs to download to view them :)

Youtube does compress your files though. So if you intend to store high
quality videos, you may want to find a better storage solution.

For videos youtube should work nicely.
There shouldn't be any time limit as before. I uploaded a 17 minutes + in
1080p movie (2.5 GB+ file size) during the wwrug:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUTu5xswkd0

If memory serves, I just had to go into my youtube account and said I
wanted to unlock the 15 minutes limit (channel parameter- longer videos),
something like that, I see it in French :p :

Joe... 'Old dog' != New Trick :)

If you don't use an external service and link to it I say create a
document. You can embed pictures in it. There are some size limitations
though (not sure off the top of my head).

We use flickr to upload our photos (

there is a nice sync functionality on Iphoto but well, since you don't
really like online photo sharing sites...

Dropbox has a 4GB limit now - that is another option.

Indeed that's often the case. That's the case for Google + for example which
limits to 2000+ pixel (at least until very recently).

We had a pro account on flickr but it's not available anymore (lol)...
The flickr free account though sounds good enough, the limit for a picture
is 200 MB / photo (1 TB overall) and it compresses to quite a lot of
versions (http://www.flickr.com/help/photos/) but the original size remains.

For example you have this picture:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88660367@N05/10113207695/in/set-721576362405414
74

That exists in a lot of versions
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/88660367@N05/10113207695/sizes/l/in/set-721576
36240541474/), and also the original size (5184x3888 for 6.3 MB):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88660367@N05/10113207695/sizes/o/in/set-7215763
6240541474/
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2859/10113207695_f4bab96dae_o_d.jpg
And on this picture you still have the EXIF.

Laurent.

of EXIF image information..
