I for one enjoyed much of your style. But as Marshall McLuhan observed,
the medium is the message. If one shouts I love you while snarling,
the words are mostly overridden by the style.

There is an old cartoon, probably from Playboy, showing a portly gentleman
dressed in Renaissance style, at the counter of a florist. He requests a

Your harsh criticism of techniques you find defective

What loss? This listserv is for both the experienced and inexperienced. The
inexperienced participants ask questions so they may learn and one day may be
able to impart their knowledge to new inexperienced participants.

I have seen in this listserv where inexperienced participants were belittled
and embarrassed by people like Gilmore only because they the knowledge and
experience they seek from this listserv. In my opinion, that behavior is rude
and has no place here.

The fact that I no longer have to listen to his insulting remarks brings a
smile to my face as I celebrate the return of this listserv to a more
professional exchange of topics regarding the assembler language.

Thanks,

arrogant. But when he stayed on target and not off topic, his posts
were very informative. Even the ones containing words that I had to Google

I too, will miss Mr. Gilmore. In addition to technology he gave us much
history, often on non-IT topics, that were usually at least somewhat related

What does sadden me in the twilight of my own career is the emergence of
internet bravado whereby things are said via email/social media that would
never be said in a face to face environment. I'd have thought that this

I, too, hope, that this is not the final decision, because I always
appreciated
the posts of Mr Gilmore. I know from private conversations, that he has
been
working with computers since 1949, so he is like a sort of living legend
for me.

It is not necessary that we share his opinions, and I, too, have
sometimes a hard
time to understand all of his posts, because I am not a native english
speaker - in fact,
I don't understand all - but that doesn't matter - there is much value
in them anyway.

So, if he stays with this decision, I hope that he will continue
following the list
and answer some questions offline - if he is interested.

Kind regards

Bernd

I wish I could help, but this is the closest I could come:

The recognition of the insuperable limits to his knowledge ought indeed to
teach the student of society a lesson of humility which should guard him

striving which makes him not only a tyrant over his fellows, but which may well
make him the destroyer of a civilization which no brain has designed but which
