Re: Anime discussion

Video games have the unfortunate disadvantage of mostly having the voiced lines being presented in random and out of context. The limits on lip animations just make it all the harder. My heart goes out to the work that goes into these, particularly the higher quality games.I do know the options for voices for tts. The problem is I dont see any way to add voices to the default tts.

Re: Anime discussion

you shouldnt have to... there should just be a list of all the voices you have installed. Keep in mind that the ones installed with JAWS for free are just that, for JAWS and nothing else. lol As to dubs in video games, I dont know if thats true... Im not quite sure what you mean by the voiced lines being presented out of context. From what Ive read, video games especially those made in Japan have just as much effort put into the voicework as your typical anime, and especially in CG animated scenes, the voiced dialog is all properly done.

Re: Alter Aeon December 2014 Updates

Well, MUDs involve you to enter commands (while basically type them out and pressing enter), rather than using arrow keys or what not. Example, to cast blue dart, youll type cast blue dart, or shorten it to c bl da or c b d... etc. Usually MUDs dont have sounds, but in cases like Mush-Z, people had make a sound pack for it and compiled it into something like Mush-Z. Alter aeon itself have a client, which I believe, have some sounds too. You can even download other mud clients to play Alter Aeon, like monkey term or tintin if youre using Mac etc. This is only a short summary of what a MUD is and how to play. So go research more into it if you want to, and happy MUDding!

Re: HRTF for sounds directly above, centred/level and below listener?

I didnt know about OpenAL-mob. My fork doesnt allow much changing at runtime: you have to use special functions that take the place of reading the config file. On account that it took about ten minutes for me to integrate this, not a big loss. But Id say youre not out of the water yet-you may just have 100% normal hardware. Just be aware of it.What youre calling the z plane (a better name might be the YZ plane, but theres actually a scientific term for it relating to hrtf and z means forward in the sighted/OpenAL world anyway) isnt used. By anyone, for anything. Well, except audioquake, which uses special radars. BGT doesnt even have a third dimension.Rapture is using a lot of proprietary stuff. Its possible theyve figured out something we havent, and their web pages imply that they have done all sorts of stuff with mathematical analysis o
 f multiple datasets to come up with theirs. I may one day work on doing whatever it is they did, but not for a while-directly above and directly below are not important as isolated positions. In normal use, the sound will move into and out of the directly above position naturally, and I think thats probably actually good enough.When you do isolated tests like this, there are three things that affect it. One of them occurs because you are using OpenALSofts implementation.The first is that youre missing literally all queues from movement. This comes in when you actually move sounds, and especially when the player is controlling the player character. If you know it was up and to the left and that its moving above you, when it hits that one position, your brain just goes Okay, it did that, at least to some extent.The second is a consequence of convolution, and you may have already seen it. An impul
 se response is a magical list of numbers that is applied to the sound inside what is basically two nested for loops. I can cut/paste them here, but the for loops are not the point--its a case where the code is maybe 5% of the story, and the rest comes from knowing why and wherefore from the math. Nevertheless, every sound is a sum of individual sine waves. All an impulse response can do is modify what is already there: if you feed one sine wave through your HRTF, you dont get anything except stereo panning out. If you want your tests and the stuff you do using it to sound really good, you need to use sounds with what is called a wide frequency response: various forms of noise, drums, footsteps, and things of that ilk. The trick is to have enough individual frequencies in the sound so that the impulse response from the HRTF has something to add the queues to.the third is OpenALSofts optimization and conversion process. If yo
 ure using makehrtf, youll want to play with all the command line options. Even if you turn everything up to the maximum quality, however, OpenALSoft throws out all the information related to something called phase and replaces it with a simplified model. The irony is that it does this in the name of optimization but, with Libaudioverse which doesnt, I get more sources. No, you cannot disable this optimization.Id be interested to see your tests. Im not set up with Rapture3d.

Hello Everyone,Thank you to all who signed up to join our beta testing team, Its the first time we have ever interacted with Audio Games so we are still relatively new to where to post, I hope this is not a burden to the community. We are developing our first game for iOS and Android but we will be looking at doing it for the PC and windows, as you might be aware the code for each is different so we are first releasing for these two platforms. @chasmaster Thank you very much for your interest in donating to our cause, we will be launching a kickstarter campaign soon, we are currently working on getting that started, your contribution will be very welcome. We will also be releasing two versions of the game, one is a free version, the other is a paid version. You can show your support to us by purchasing the paid version of the game, this purchase gives you a medal of honour, it will be shown on your profile and high scores.We will be sending everyon
 e an email with more information on how to beta test, so for anyone that hasnt beta tested before you will know how to do it after our email. We are busy coding away getting the game ready for our launch. @dark Thank you so much for your expertise, we are a start up company so we are still looking at what other platforms/games we can expand into and develop. Our main aim is to create more social inclusion and there are so many ways that this can be done, the same way that there are so many different ways that games can be more accessible. We will look at all possibilities to do this, and with the help of all our beta testers I am sure we will achieve something great.@galaxy Stranger Thanks for the information of AppleVis, we are already aware of them. We will be contacting them soon too. Again a big thank you to everyone who has subscribed, we really appreciate your help and we hope you enjoy the game as much as we do!Warmest Regards,Th

Hmm, the test programme (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/213 … 20Test.zip) does 2 things: decrease the height of the sound, then plays a sound at various locations around the listener. Well, tracks will be endless if your playing on free ride, or if youve selected a bit of a long track. Beginners luck does have an end, try playing it on stunt circuit. Had I been in charge of releasing the games final build I would of removed several of the things which I never even got to implement like board park and the tutorial, as well as reset all character stats to the defaults since they are currently set at what they were in testing, hents is why the default character is able to do front side 180s with out a hitch. I may eventualy go in and try to rip out half that stuff, but im taken up with dm nb at the moment. Ill see about writing a guide to put in the articles room when I get back from school.

Weve got plenty of sites that will do it for you, and windows will also tell you locally.It would be kind of nice if they built in a checker though, especially if it were able to input the IP in the box automatically. If they are taking suggestions, Ill bring that up.In the end I see it as a non issue at this point. But thats just my opinion.

2014-12-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: HRTF for sounds directly above, centred/level and below listener?

I just used the MIT Kemar Dataset. Specifically, the one they say is diffuse equalized. The difference is that Im not throwing out the phase information using a C file thats basically the size of a small novel in the interest of speed. OpenALSoft is interesting internally, mostly because it started in the days when our compilers didnt do a million optimizations they do now, and Ive personally found that not doing what he did and just writing for cache optimization and minimizing the number of superfluous math operations is better, at least on an X86 PC. It also takes literally something like a thousandth the code, and the only concern I have is that it might be required for iOS down the road. Im not sure how it sounds versus OpenALSoft as I never set up a side-by-side listening test, but its definitely less hollow and more full.Im not saying you want to use more sounds, Im saying you want to use a
 sound with as wide a frequency response as possible. Examples of bad sounds for HRTF include flutes, sine/cosine waves, whistles, etc. Good examples include clicks, pops, footsteps, drums, various zapping-like sounds, etc. The HRIR can only modify what is given to it in terms of frequencies, and so you need to give it enough frequencies that it can actually insert the queues. This is frequency, not sound: every sound is composed of a number of frequencies added together.Go into audacity and make 10 random sine waves at whatever frequencies. Play them. So long as theyre not all astronomically far apart, you dont hear them as 10 distinct sounds. Normal sounds have hundreds and thousands of individual sine waves, but its still possible to theoretically make any sound that way. What the HRIR does with some deceptively simple code is modify these in the same way that your head does. Playing more sou
 nds simultaneously isnt the same at all, though playing multiple sounds simultaneously at the same point in space would potentially be so long as theyre not all the same. For the record, your current sound might be fine. Its just a thing to be aware of when youre playing with this stuff.Im afraid I cant tell you what the OpenALSoft options mean. I never invested the time to understand the algorithm because, as I said above, I think its pointless. Back when i actually did OpenAL, I didnt understand the math well enough. As I recall, the really important one is -w, and you want to turn it up to the max it will let you.As for your test, its not the program I wanted. I was hoping you had a recording. I would need to instal Rapture3d, and it might be worth doing so, but Im not set up with it at the moment. I should perhaps also post one for comparison purposes, but this
  will take a little setup that I dont have time for at the moment (and I have got to code the recording object. Maybe Ill do that first).

(Yes, this is Swamp related.)I find that I have difficulty explaining it properly, because Ive been using a mouse for far too long to remember what its like to first learn it. Many people here in the community have only recently become accustomed to using the mouse to play games (Swamp), and I wondered if anyone would be willing to explain it in a way that would get new players past the initial hesitation to use this strange new tool.Ive been told that an audio tutorial would be more helpful than written text, but Im sure anything is better than nothing. Ill save the tips and advice somewhere so I can always have it ready to send out to the next person who asks me about this.

Re: What tips would you give to someone just learning to use a mouse?

NVDA has a feature that will play a tone when you move the mouse, using pitch/pan for position, and volume for the brightness of whatever its over. It also can read whatever text the mouse passes over, but I find this not overly useful (maybe if it had the focus clicks like voiceover?).If theyre an NVDA user, or are willing to play with NVDA, it might be worth messing around with that, to get use to how the mouse works? Im not really sure its the best idea, but its the first thing that came to mind.

Well I will be funding this project as it will help with remote admin work.out of the 30 or so systems I manage, while a lot of these I just set up, 10 of those are remotes.4 of them including my system and some family systems are in the same house and 1 is close buy so I can admin it in the weekend no issue.However at least 2 are at least an hour from my house, and that means, that unless they break or I go to them, I have to have as much automatic stuff running in a bloatware state and hope it works.Getting files to my systems is done via a shared dropbox folder which is the easy part.But running the script for the files needs to be done on the remote.Id actually like to be honest to have something that could check a dropbox script run a batch file, and install everything thats in there assuming default locations without any problem, and restart, have it update everything and email me the result but thats still not total cont
 rol and assumes it all works.If something is wrong or things crash and the system is in a mess then I wont get my report back.One of the systems I work on over the phone, the admin managed to mangle by moving his accounts wrongly.It required me to physically install and reshare the dropbox folder and transfer his files over, loosing a bit of his email in the process.and it needed physical access.One feature Id like with a remote app is a way to well run a virtual coppy of a machine instance, update that instance and then at some point write that instance to the system, once that instance worked, it wouldnt be a problem to just write that over.Still though it would be good to have something that worked

I dont know where to get voices, basically. I just have the Microsoft default for TTS. I use NVDA, not Jaws.As for the out of context thing, in all video game dubs no matter the language, the script is dealt out in bits and pieces. Your given a single line, perhaps a little description of its context if its particularly dramatic, and you move on. Unless its something with a ridiculous amount of cutscenes like Metal Gear, in which they made an exception.Thats just about the only one, even huge games like the Mass Effect trilogy were done line by line, probably because VA work is payed in the time it takes to read a line.

Re: What tips would you give to someone just learning to use a mouse?

hi aprone.I myself have used the mouse for the first time playing swamp but I didnt encounter any problems doing it, I find the process of using the mouse very intuitive. I think that some folks make a confusion about walking in swamp because they might think that they have to move the mouse to walk which is wrong. A good advice for someone who wants to play swamp is to move the mouse only left and right, if the mouse gets too close to an object they have to just lift it and place it somewhere in the other direction so they have enough space to move. also the mouse sensitivity is very important, I suggest that every beginner plays with the settings to see what fits them best by moving the mouse in the game and seeing how much the movement of the mouse affects the panning. I hope my post was helpful.

But some games, like the onimusha series and most fighting games, just have very bad dubs for one reason or another. Hi Aprone,I still have to find a comfortable way to know the lirix and the melody since its the first time I hear this song. The thing that intrigues me the most is repeating everything ... For non English people, this really sounds difficult... Youll hear from me sooner or later though, seems fun to do it ...

Also I havent learned any language other English. Because of this I have been drown to shows that are: 1. dubed in English, and 2. use a fair amount of dialog. My favorite of these is the digimon series sofar in its sixth season, and viewtiful joe, a show based on one of my favorite games. Yu-gi-oh is actually good (at least the original series is ), but the rest of the shows mentioned in this topic dont sound that interesting to me.

congratulations!.Well, to level up, do the following:NothingYou can level up your sword, and your health. for the sword, you have to collect fozons.When you collect enough of them, you can hear two different sounds.the first one, plays when you have your super bar charged, for doing cyclones, invisibility, etc. you will hear it frequently. also, when you level up, youll be able to acumulate more tan one bar, so you can do cyclone 2, 3, ... 8 times. and youll unlock new attacks for the magic menu.the second sound, plays when you collect enough fozons too, but this one indicates that you leveled up the sword.For health, just eat. yeah, im serious haha. the more you heal, more points to level up the characters health. you will hear the same sound as the sword when you level up health.give me some time, and ill try to help with alchemmy. i have some tips in mind but i need to check the game first. it
 was hard for me to figure it out, but ill try to write some useful info.

Hi dentin. I understand your not replying to my emails because according to you, there not important. Well, dentin, id like to say, that what is not important to you may be important to others, so you should reply to the mudmails. Now on to more important things...Ok. Dentin, You have kept me disconnected from the chat channels for as long as i can remember on alter aeon, but why! Why wont you let me on them! And you also spammed me again? Why, did you do that! I mean, i wasnt really spamming, and also, why have you banned me from making characters. Ok. The channel things, those are kinda stupid. But this? Just... no. No. Its... just... so stupid. Now, my point. My point is, youve had me cooped up like this for so long, and you wont let me out, but you ever heard of nelson... forget his last name... but the guy who went to jail for something related to black rights? When he came out, he was not bitter, and he was not preventing anyth

What if all the things you say ill do dont happen! Seriously! Also, its time those players took me seriously. Ok? Im not some stupid little spammy bastard, im just trying to play the game. But when ever i ask for help, they say explore, or figure it out. Or, read the help pages.. Why cant i ask like everyone else! Ok, now to the char thing. Dentin, im level 19, and gaining exp. Now, why do you stop me from making chrs. Im not that stupid, im not gonna og make a char just so i can talk because your going to listen to what i say, hopefully, and unban me from channels! Hopefully! Now, dentin, read this 3 or 4 times if you have to to get this into your head. I, may, have changed. You dont know that. NOw, Can you unrestrict me and let me pl

2014-12-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: HRTF for sounds directly above, centred/level and below listener?

You cant, not easily.Whoever originally implemented it decided to replace 10 lines of code with a custom data format and an algorithm to run that format. He removes the phase info from the HRIR and replaces it with some delay lines. If you do take it out and given the architecture of the rest of it, it probably will fail to be fast enough for what you need. The way that it is designed internally is, IMHO, a mess. Partially this comes from the OpenAL API, partially its from a project that can be traced back to 2005, and partially from the fact that, back then, strange bit tricks and crap really were faster than just multiplication. That last one is a very, very long discussion that Im not really qualified to have. Its basically just stacked compiler and CPU improvements out our ears. Nevertheless, OpenALSoft somewhere contains my favorite line of code: x = ~4. If you stopped and stared at that for a
 minute or two before getting it as I did, you will understand why I dislike it so much. If you didnt, then go ahead because youve probably got a decent chance.The net result of all of this is that the naive O(m*n) algorithm that takes 22 million math operations a second at 44.1khz is going to do so in such a way that youre not able to take advantage of all the features of your CPU that let you do that kind of thing without bringing the computer to its knees. The rest of OpenALSoft already takes a ton, and Im almost certain that you cant just use my loop--the model that OpenAL uses for buffers ruins such tricks. Ill post the convolution kernel at the bottom of this post; but youll still need a rather large dose of trigonometry to figure out what the impulse response itself needs to be (that code, in my much simpler version, verges on 100 lines including loading the datasets, and is mostly math).Ill make a p
 oint of posting a recording for you in the next couple of days with mine. Im too busy at the moment and its not trivial for me to do so again until I set a couple things back up. I dont have a side-by-side test as I said, but you should at least be able to tell if its different enough that you really care. I can load other datasets, but the only other interesting one is CIPIC, and CIPIC is formatted in such a way that it cant be loaded into much if anything without a lot of data munging and conversion that I havent cared to do yet--I dont know if its worth it, so I dont want to spend a day or two figuring out how to deal with some of the really weird things about CIPIC.And the two crucial functions (be aware Libaudioverse is itself GPL, but I hereby give anyone who wants permission to use what Im putting here for what small bit of good it does). Also be sure to scroll down and see the header sn
 ippet and my explanation-you will probably shoot yourself in the foot repeatedly until you do:void convolutionKernel(float* input, unsigned int outputSampleCount, float* output, unsigned int responseLength, float* response) {
for(unsigned int i = 0; i  outputSampleCount; i++) {
float samp = 0.0f;
for(unsigned int j = 0; j  responseLength; j++) {
samp += input[i+j]*response[responseLength-j-1];
}
output[i] = samp;
}
}

void crossfadeConvolutionKernel(float* input, unsigned int outputSampleCount, float* output, unsigned int responseLength, float* from, float* to) {
float delta = 1.0f/outputSampleCount;
for(unsigned int i = 0; i  outputSampleCount; i++) {
float weight1 = 1.0f-delta*i;
float weight2 = i*delta;
float samp = 0.0f;
for(unsigned int j = 0; j  responseLength; j++) {
samp += input[i + j] * (weight1*from[responseLength-j-1] + weight2*to[responseLength-j-1]);
}
output[i] = samp;
}
}And this snippet from the header is also important:/**The convolution kernel.
The first response-1 samples of the input buffer are assumed to be a running history, so the actual length of the input buffer needs to be outputSampleCount+responseLength-1.
*/
void convolutionKernel(float* input, unsigned int outputSampleCount, float* output, unsigned int responseLength, float* response);

/**Same as convolutionKernel, but will crossfade from the first response to the second smoothly over the interval outputSampleCount.*/
void crossfadeConvolutionKernel(float* input, unsigned int outputSampleCount, float* output, unsigned int responseLength, float* from, float* to);And my explanation:You call these on blocks of data, but you have to maintain a running history for them. In internal Libaudioverse code, these are kernels, my name for a class of functions that are somewhat like plus: fundamental operations, separated completely from supporting structure for clarity and optimization purposes (I can make these about 4x faster with SSE). You need a block of data that is block_length+impulse_response_length-1 samples long. Every time you advance with

2014-12-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Dark via Audiogames-reflector

Re: What tips would you give to someone just learning to use a mouse?

Well I must admit swamp wasnt my first game with the mouse, I also used it in rail racer and in some experimental arcade games written in 2008 by a chap called Bryan. actually sinse those included audio tutorials and served as something as an interactive how to on mouse control its a shame theyre no longer around (I checked the page where they used to be and got a 404), one even involved being a cleric throwing spells at nasty monsters which was cool! Unfortunately, I cant reccord an audio tutorial sinse both swamp and Daytona need headphones to play and I cant reccord and use headphones at the same time sinse I use sterrio mikes (and playing swamp on speakers would be a nightmare). I will however try to give as best text description as possible sinse I do know there are blind people out there who have trouble trying something new. holding the mouse: I always myself hold the mouse with my right hand (particularly
  because in swamp all the important keyboard controls can be activated left handed). I have my thumb along the left edge and the heal of my hand towards the back so that my index finger is on the left mouse button and my middle finger is on the right button. I can then slide the mouse along with my thumb and ring fingers. If I needed the mouse wheel Id probably shift my index finger along a little. Moving the mouse: Because I am not the best spacially coordinated person, I prefer myself to use the edge of my desk to orient me (particularly because I have a good sized computer table). So when Im playing swamp I actually have the back of my hand over the edge of the table which gives me a good streight edge to move along. I can then pretend essentially that the mouse is like one of those big lever rudder controls that some boats have that are like single levers which move in a groove left and right, this also makes it easy to pick the mouse off the table and
 shift it right if I need more left than my amount of room allows (though with the default sensativity in Swamp it seems okay). Sinse I have the back of the table as a guide to a streight edge, moving the mouse streight up and down is easy, which will do for things like operating the throttle in Rail racer where you need to push the mouse forward or pull it back.For something like Daytona, I pick up the mouse and move it forward into a blank space on my desk where I have room to swing it around a little and do the circles and such. This is a little less precise, but that is why Daytona is a harder game, because your not just going in streight lines, your going in curves and circles, but hay, making gold isnt easy . I dont really think there is anymore I can say, sinse other than that its all practice, practice practice! Maybe people should go
 and try a space invaders game that uses the mouse like Judgement day, or maybe the new shades of doom 2.0 on training mode (where the monsters stand still), to get the knack (sinse quite apart from the mouse Swamp is not exactly an easy game to begin with). Hth.

Re: Anime discussion

I think part of it is that not a lot of plot has actually been discussed... mostly about translation and dubbing, and not much about the shows themselves. Having to watch series that are dubbed only does make things a little frustrating.. I remember how that felt before I learned Japanese. But with KM player, that isnt really a problem anymore.. as to having enough sight to see thescreen, Im a total but I find the sounds in anime are usually so dramatic and obvious it isnt hard to guess whats going on in conjunction with the dialog. lol

Re: Braillemon status update!

As of right now, you have four gyms in Braillemon, and Lavender Town, which has its own challenge in the Pokémon Tower. However, Lavender Towns challenge isnt quite complete because theres a certain item you need thats in a place Rachel hasnt finished coding yet. Theres plenty to do while you wait, though. If nothing else, you can travel around the places that are there and level up your Pokémon.

Re: Joining our Beta Testing Team

Hi!Thats an amazing Mission Statement Audazzle, and if any reaction came across as implying something you wrote was a burden to the community, I can assure you this is definitely not the case. Quite the opposite. Inclusive gaming hits a nerve here, and nerves are sometimes sensitive. ;-) In other words, sometimes things like this stimulate memories of shattered hopes in People, leading to paradox effects.Anyway, enough pop psychology. Ill sign up later and with your permission Ill post the link to your site in GamePORT, which is the German-speaking hub of blind gaming.By the way, doesnt it seem that inclusion itself can feel like a game, where you earn Independence Points for every barrier successfully smashed? ;-)Greetings,EG
