Re: Free dev

No I don't think it will create a revolution in audiogames either. It'll be like the good old days in the new releases room again where you couldn't go two minutes without stumbling into another reskinned Zombie Arena or whatever. Except now instead of Zombie Arena it's gonna be "Johnny needs to fight through a maze and kill a dragon to get a bunch of gold and stuff!" over and over again, and the dragon sound effects are all going to be the same. And then there will be a million topics in the developers room like "Hey guys I started developing my game with Sable now I can't add minigames like in Manamon what do I do?" It'll be fun.

AnyAudio was free. Redspot was free. Survive the Wild is free, but it has a store that people spend money in. Sure, STW might've died a long time ago if it weren't for that, but it's also one of the most expansive and original games we have, and requires lots of work to properly administrate. You're going to be like, yeah but Redspot and Anyaudio went down a long time ago! Yes they did, and here we get to the actual point. Should people not be paid for work like that? It's the variety of playable where you need to OCR and you can't actually get everything possible out of the game at all because I don't think you can attack with ranged weapons and stuff and last I checked people were having trouble with lava. Some of these things could be different now I'm not sure, but if that's what you're into, go for it.

NVDA SAPI is very broken with a lot of things and will remain so forever unfortunately. It's a cool project, but NVDA does not have publically accessible interfaces for accomplishing everything needed for such a project to succeed in even like, half of cases that SAPI is used for. When a function to check if NVDA is speaking is added that'll decrease somewhat, but the support doesn't exist right now and it still might not work for Code7, it's difficult to say.

Unfortunately, being nice does not give you karmic bonuses while trying to run a small business supplying a game to 500k plus people, maybe 2000 of whom are blind and that's probably a liberal estimate. Spending the two hours to add a check for the prison minigame, and an hour testing, might not even produce enough money to be worth it. How you guys feel about Bit Life is how I feel about mainstream games that are far more inaccessible than BitLife ever was.

I do understand how the interface is clunky and do agree that it could be much better, but I work around it because I love the game so much. Touching around the screen is the most convenient way to get things done, but you can do without if you avoid the log. To do that, you have to come at it from the top or the bottom of the screen depending on where the button you need or whatever is located. I know the game well enough that I know how the overlays for each screen are usually layed out and where the log generally inserts itself, so I can avoid it.

No. I said targeting specifically console is a bad idea. If it's going to be for PC as well, it will probably do fine. If is has crossover appeal to sighted people, it will probably do fine. But if the company behind it dumped a whole bunch of time into making it work on consoles and it has no appeal to the sighted market, they probably aren't terribly smart.

Re: What is the best platform to play on if you cannot see?

The question is not what the future thing will be. It is entirely possible that consoles will be the future, but right now the amount of games that are playable on PC vastly outweighs the amount of games that are playable on console. The question is what is relevant now, and if you're going to make a game specifically targeted towards blind people, making a console game is a great way to ensure your game flops.

Parts of using it are frustrating, but you can get away with doing a lot of things on the web. Not using Steam just because it isn't perfect hurts you more than it hurts Valve.

I don't think you are taking the hours of time it takes to develop a game into account, which is confusing to me because you're apparently a developer? This type of wining is pretty common, and I can just smell the privilege oozing from you. Or maybe is it jealousy? Not sure really. It's also amazing how people talk about like, ringing all the money from the blind community, or milking it out of us like we're cows. We're not fucking cows, guys. Guess what? You have the autonomy not to pay for something if you don't want it. I don't know if you guys know this, but every single person has the power to not buy things from the STW store, or the blindfold games. I've never done it.

Re: Why isn't bit life on android accessible?

They have done many things for accessibility over the years, the most notable thing I can think of right now being making the percentages represented by bars accessible. That unlocked a huge part of the game. But there are still some inaccessible things, notably minigames which lock us out of military careers entirely, escaping from prison, and certain crimes. I hope eventually they'll make alternatives, but I'm pretty much fine playing the game from time to time until then.

They do not. It's not a very smart decision in terms of development expediency, but oh well. Android version uses Unity, which by default is of course not accessible. I guess you could contact the devs about it, but I never have since I don't use Android. Also it might takes weeks for them to get back to you even if you use a platform they are active on (some they do not seem to respond on like Reddit) but they probably will eventually get back to you.

Could be betatesting, could be variable editing and not official at all. I think though that Crazy Party has no official beta team because the versions themselves are called betas and I seem to remember Pragma saying something of the sort. I remember suggesting being able to type values one time though and I believe he said that in his opinion the feature wasn't worth the code.

Manamon are the only ones in the game who need sleep. And they can only get sleep in beds, nowhere in the wild, where most of them hang around. Whenever you go to a hotel or whatever, I mean first of all there's only one bed in the hotel so I guess every manamon sleeps on that (eww) and it doesn't mention you sleeping, only your manamon.

So, digging through the code and analyzing the font with NVDA on WSL, I've figured out that when you're in a menu (tested with the main menu) the color of the item you have selected changes. When you are focused on the New Game option, the text "New Game" will show as white on blue with NVDA. If you are not focused on that option, just the letter N will show as white on black to indicate that that is the shortcut you can use to access the item. Other letters of the item will be light grey on black. It's incredibly tedious to check things this way so I don't know if it will help anyone, but yeah that's a thing.

Re: Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead - reintroduction+ASCII roguelikes discussion

To those wondering why the Windows version won't work even though it's still a console application, that is because it's not. It's the same problem with Dwarf Fortress and some other games. The windows console might not provide features they need, so they write their own console implementation. I believe the devs of this game custom-draw everything to the window, which means that screen-readers have no idea how to parse it unless with OCR.AS for the Windows Subsystem for Linux, I'm trying it now. Already the main menu isn't working, and I see on the issue that that's not done yet, so maybe it will be better once more of the items in the issue are done.

Dragon AI Dungeon is amazing. It's worth noting though that with custom prompts, for whatever reason OpenAI requires the AI Dungeon team to make the first generation with GPT2 instead of GPT3. The creator of AI Dungeon, Nick Walton, has said this many times on Twitter although I can't remember him ever giving concrete reasons for that. Maybe it's to due with trying to reduce harmful use of GPT3, which is a major concern of Open AI.

Re: Female blind gamers

This guy does a bunch of mainstream representation stuff so I'd be more willing to believe him that this is for that. I'm not a girl but I'm pretty sure there are very few in the community, and potentially interact within their own bubbles. This isn't really specific to blind gaming communities either, but it's particularly noticeable within them. Could have to do with many things. The average gamer is a teenager and teenage girls for whatever reason seem not to be as interested in gaming in general. Also most blind guys and guys in general when it comes to gaming communities are just weird, so some girls probably feel uncomfortable. No getting around it.

Re: Where is brain station?

There are much better ways to phrase this. I'm not a language expert so I don't know if it can be explained away with a language barrier, but it's extremely rude to word things this way in English, especially if you have no actual right to them. You didn't pay anything for Brain Station so far. There is no Kickstarter, or way to preorder it, and Liam's Patreon levels don't include anything about Brain Station.

I think the minigun was pretty much inferior to the M-2. I'd always use that one instead because I could get the required number of kills to get it even on killingground, so I had several of them in my base. There was a time when I set up a base in a random location in the Battle City and didn't put any barricades around it at all. I would just disable the generator whenever I wasn't using it and go invis 30 seconds before I'd reach it and it survived at 16 million health for about a week. While I had that base I would log in, play around for an hour on killingground and then go to the battlefield and dump all the items I had accumulated into my base. I got maybe 700 btc from playing around on KG for a total of 6 or 7 hours.

I'll be one of the first ones to rag on a game because it was just made for karma/reputation whoring. I'm also not a big fan of games made by new devs that aren't original in any way. That being said, unless I'm missing something it's a free game and thus has no way to preorder. He doesn't fucking owe anybody anything. If he doesn't want to release a game for whatever reason, that's his choice. It does, in fact, work like that. And if he did release it in its current form and not update it, he'd be compared to Aaron Baker and his reputation would be dragged through the mud even more than it has been already.Honestly, good for you for doing this. Focus on school for a while, and then come back and everyone will have forgotten about what you've done in the past. Good luck.

They aren't really standard MOO features. Maybe on space MOOs that all take the aesthetic from each other and all have account systems where, despite having this fancy account system allowing multiple characters nobody actually is allowed multiple characters, but there are actually many MOOs (Hellmoo comes to mind immediately) that don't work like this. There were also probably many that are dead now. But really, if this is a gripe to you about your MOO core, you're gonna have bigger problems considering that once you code one of these things you can just lift it for your other projects.

Re: NVDASAPI: convey SAPI speech through NVDA

@18, as the first post says, it uses the NVDAControllerClient. The DLL doesn't have any of those abilities, you call the speech function in the DLL and it sends that speech to the screenreader, and that's it. It would break terribly in games like Manamon with cutscenes, which obviously in Manamon isn't an issue since it has native screen-reader support but any game that depends on the TTS waiting.Either way, it seems pretty broken and could never be fully functional because of the way SAPI works. Within a functional SAPI voice, there should be a way to speak to an audio stream, which NVDA could not do. As I said earlier, the speech is queued internally in NVDA and there is no supported way, especially in the controller, to speak a string from your NVDA synth to an audio stream. The best we could hope for would be for someone to use the new speech refactor changes in 2019.3 to build a function into the controller that would be able to discern whether the screen-reader itself is speaking, but at no point will the SAPI voice see an audio stream of this speech. So this will probably break in terrible ways in any application that uses those methods to do any processing with the SAPI voice. My research here is based on the front-facing interface for interacting with SAPI voices from other applications, because I've never been able to find a description of the process required to make a SAPI voice myself.

Re: NVDASAPI: convey SAPI speech through NVDA

This should work with any version of NVDA. It's using the 2010 builds of the NVDAControlerClient, which means that it'll be a non-optimal experience because there is no support in that build to check if NVDA is speaking. Nobody as of yet has taken up the task of creating a new build of the controller client to add a function to do this, but it would make the experience much better I think.

In terms of MUDs, the emotes are usually accessible to everyone because they are based on description and that's all they are. In terms of audiogames, Survive the Wild has a menu of emotes that your character can do that play sounds but don't output any text. I'm not aware of any games that make emotes accessible where they previously weren't. I've never played Second Life and so I don't actually know this, but it's a regular game with an accessible client, so maybe it has some character actions that are adapted?

@7Yes, this kind of thing has been happening with space MOOs. And I fucking hate it. And from what I remember coming in on the tail end of that craze in 2014 and reading back through topics trying to find a Cosmos DB when I thought that was all the shit, people didn't really like that either. No it wasn't as harsh as when we talk about Ultrapower and Redspot clones, but it was definitely there.@9Agreed. As for ultrabombs there's some interesting possibility there, like a mega corporation that distributes these bombs that take money to work in an effort to profit off of warfare, but none of these people ever put that amount of story in their games. But yeah I agree with the sentiment that this won't do anything and is pretty pointless. People have been saying this for years and years and it never matters and never will until these people grow up and the generation passes and nobody cares about this stuff anymore. We've started to see it in certain people, I give it maybe 5-6 years before everyone who did this has either enough maturity to move on or just becomes one of the group of adult lowlives who do this stuff because they never grew up and probably don't contribute anything useful to society.
