This is probably the single game I'd most like to see made accessible. I think you've done significantly more research on it than I have, and unfortunately I don't have a clue how to actually go about solving the accessibility issues short of building my own version from scratch (are the developers still reachable?).That said, I wanted to make sure I announce support for this topic, because it's going in my bookmarks for sure, and I am going to be watching it really closely.

I for one like my storage, and appreciate compact, efficient games. The more giant wav-based things I install, the more I have to juggle at backup time, and the more money I have to pay for the resources to manage those giant products (larger storage devices, faster upload rates, etc).Particularly since a good codec at decent quality levels will make the difference pretty much academic, I'm all for compressed audio.

I have updated this month's stats (post 17) with final bandwidth information. In short, the issue continues, and thus we will have to continue taking action accordingly.I would, however, like to thank the many, many people who used the site responsibly this month. You vastly outnumber the few troublemakers causing problems, and the difficulty I'm having in hunting down who exactly deserves the ban hammer is a testament to the number of you doing exactly what we hope you will when you come to the archive: download and play games. Finally, I'd like to ask everyone to please remember that when you listen to recordings, to download rather than stream them. If you're not sure of the difference, if your browser starts playing the audio immediately, it's streaming. Go back, right-click (applications key or shift f10) on the link to the recording, and choose the option labeled save target (or link) as instead. Mp3 audio accounted for over half of our bandwidth this month, and one file alone for over 500gb (yes, it's a long recording). This is incredibly important, and while we like hosting recordings and believe they're very positive for the community, if they cause us to be unable to continue serving games, then we're going to have to rationalize whether it's worthwhile for us to keep that portion of the site up.

We have received several similar reports, where visitors to specific developer pages are seeing false positive alerts. There seems to be very little to nothing we can do about these, other than hope they resolve themselves over time, as has previously been the case. Most of the problem is likely with games themselves, since many of our titles are older, and take actions that could be considered virus like when run.Fortunately, it appears that the alerts only apply to specific developer pages, and not the whole site. While there are ways to disable your browser's reliance on Google safe browsing, I'm not comfortable posting them publicly here, as the service does good work, and I don't want to post advice that then causes someone to fall victim to a malicious site.If individuals would like to reach out via email, I'll be happy to assist you in either temporarily disabling safe browsing, or getting the games through some other method.

For those of you interested, I'll be updating the bandwidth stats in post 17 to include info for the rest of this month. I've also added some historical data as a contrast.@Aaron: the archive definitely isn't going anywhere regardless of the presence of a torrent. The constant traffic is a bigger threat, but hopefully my posting here that I just renewed the domain yesterday will help to alleviate some of the concern. While I appreciate the advantages of a torrent and it has been suggested before, it's not something I, personally, have plans to develop in the near or mid future. This said, I certainly don't want to discourage anyone else from doing so. I'll also make sure to include the rest of our developers, so that if someone on the team feels differently than I do, they can pitch in here as well.If anyone here (not part of the archive team) does decide to develop this torrent, I'm going to ask you to respect the following restrictions though:First, Contact us before you start downloading the site. We are still experiencing high traffic, and as the month draws to a close, somebody hitting every file on the site without first notifying us is probably going to get a ban, and since I did post this first, probably won't get it lifted when you complain. Additionally, if you need to download new content when we make updates, download only the files you actually need, not the whole site.Second, respect developers. There's a reason torrents are considered a legal gray area, and if you want to develop something using the archive as the principle, then you need to do it properly. Finally, don't represent your torrent as being endorsed by or part of the archive. It's your work and your responsibility, not ours.

If someone reading this thread is indeed treating the site like their personal internet-connected hard drive, then please stop breaking it for everyone else, but I don't have significant evidence one way or the other.I've sent an email to Skynet, and hopefully we'll be able to start digging into this issue further. If you were getting hit by a ban, it would be every page, not just some of them.Specific post responses below:@Ethin: yes, sorry.@Jaybird: a lot of this looks like legitimate traffic, especially since it's been varying heavily over the month. I've just tested both the main developer listing and Jim's page, and both load normally. It is very possible you're being impacted by a number of bans we put in place after last month's abuse if you're unable to access the entire website. If this is the case, email our website at agarchive.net contact address, and I'll do my best to help you get the games you want and see if I can narrow the bans to exclude legitimate users.Unfortunately our traffic is still higher than is acceptable, so the ban number is only likely to increase in the future, unless we're able to come up with a better way to reduce illegitimate traffic (users downloading the same file repeatedly).

Re: we need to react -- google is blocking several audiogame websites, inc

There's a lot here to respond to, but I'll do my best.Several games on the archive are frequently flagged as false positives. This can include bgt titles and especially the BSC games. There's a reason for this. Older software especially may act in a manner that modern systems see as threatening, and they're right to do so, because in a modern case that behavior *is* threatening. The archive does not knowingly host malicious files, though it most certainly does potentially poorly written or buggy ones, and in some cases files from devs with less than stellar reputations. If you genuinely believe a file is harmful, we want to hear about it as soon as possible. Head over to our contact page, and grab the website contact address. In all known cases though, you should be safe to add an exclusion to your antivirus or browser.Unfortunately, as shown on the home and news pages, we are experiencing some significant issues lately, including tremendous traffic spikes from what we suspect are misbehaving users, mostly out of Asia. Additionally, our email is partially down, so responses will be delayed until these problems are resolved.I'll keep an eye on this topic, but please do feel free to reach out to us via email as well. You will get a response, it just may be a while.

Re: the Wastes update pack

@Defender:This isn't a code update to the wastes, so any crash bugs in the game are there to stay. All I'm really doing under the hood is text processing. There are two primary reasons for my recommending you not use Mush-z. Firstly, is that the development team is making a dedicated effort to ensure that mush-z is only used for Alter Aeon, and its rude of me to work against them.Secondly, is that as I said, mush-z is configured to work with Alter Aeon, and not other worlds. A stock copy of Mush-z will cause a fair bit of user frustration if you try to add my pack to it (I know this from experience setting the pack up for a tester). The two can be meshed, but only fairly advanced MushClient/computer users should be attempting it. If this is something you want to do, drop me a line through my contact page and I can help you set it up on an individual basis (damage to your copy of mush-z, including a possible need to reinstall since I'm not familiar with the most recent iterations, is hereby disclaimed).

the Wastes update pack

2018-03-28 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : john via Audiogames-reflector

the Wastes update pack

Hi All,Those of you who were following the Warsim thread a while ago may remember my making a post about an expansion/update pack for the Wastes. At long last, the pack is at a state where I feel comfortable releasing it to public beta.In short, this is a MushClient-powered set of scripts that tries to bring a little life back to the game. It includes a bunch of typo/wording fixes, some new sounds (more hopefully to come), smoothes over some glitches, and even finishes adding a feature or two.The pack runs the anniversary mod, and more content may be added as time goes on.I do want to emphasize that this is most certainly a beta product. I'm posting it here so that it can get some wider exposure than the couple people I've shared it with, but expect bugs and crashes while that exposure does what its supposed to and helps me iron out the kinks. For more info or to give it a shot, check out the homepage:https://nightvista.net/theWastesPackIf you have feedback, thoughts, new content or find bugs, do drop me line, at:https://nightvista.net/contact.phpIf you're planning to repost or share this elsewhere, I do ask that you let me know first. The pack is complicated, and until I've had some time to make sure everything works smoothly under load, I'd like to keep the rollout somewhat gradual.A note for Mush-z users: if you plan to use this pack, you should download and install a separate copy of MushClient. Do not use the one that comes with Mush-z, as it is not designed to play nicely with other worlds. The Wastes should install alongside any other muds you have without issue, though.Best,John

Re: Yet Another Guy's Game recordings - latest is Nujam Guitar

As long as you send your work in batches of decent size all's fine, and if you can make sure you're not duplicating existing work before you send it, that'll cut down most of the processing time. Its probably best for us to discuss the details over email, but the short version is don't worry about it. As long as you're not uploading a dozen gigabytes of recordings with hours added every week, then we should be able to keep up.

Re: What are PC Games and optical character recognition options?

OCR is functional for the VM example above. I'd be very uncertain trying to do anything that required actual high degrees of accuracy, or dealt with any strange fonts, images, etc.I've managed to use it to read the screen of a terminal in a linux vm (85% accuracy or so), or to determine if I'm at the login prompt. It doesn't do nearly as well reading other kinds of messages, and no matter what you do there's a degree of guesswork involved.Short version: its better than anything we've had before, but its not perfect, and in some cases will fail outright.I'll also note that this is NVDA with windows 10. I have not attempted to use JFW so can't speak to its accuracy or usability.

Re: Yet Another Guy's Game recordings - latest is Nujam Guitar

I mentioned this earlier in the technoshock topic, but if you're interested in having your recordings hosted on agarchive.net, please do shoot an email to our developer contact (develop...@agarchive.net) and we can get you up and running. We are starting to screen recordings a bit, so it may be worth while checking through the existing files on the site before submitting new ones (the goal being to avoid duplicate content), but if you've got games that aren't on the site already, then we've got a hosting platform for you.The only drawback is that we'd only be able to host the compressed versions of files. Raw wav or flac will get a bit large, especially if you tape at high sample rates.

I'd be quite interested in seeing this, on multiple levels. There have been a couple recordings of the game made over the years, but as far as I know they're no longer available, and none of them included actual descriptions of why something worked.I never managed to get terribly far in the game, so I'd really like to see somebody take it on.Also, since there aren't any recordings around, a walkthrough would be great to add to agarchive.net. This would also make sure that it was available forever, not just until it was removed from dropbox or whatever system hosted it.

Re: Diagnostic Complete. Problem Found, myriad occurrences: Error 404...

@JLove,As Jack said earlier, addressing both of your concerns is exactly why the audiogames archive was created. Games that are no longer available from the developer are often submitted to us and then added to the archive, and anyone who has made recordings is welcome to submit them for inclusion in our recordings section. This, of course, includes podcasts or instructional materials, and in several cases we've included such alongside a game.We also provide some information in cases where getting a game up and running is confusing, such as TDV, or those games that were distributed in source-only form.In a few cases a developer has contacted us and requested that we not make a title available for download. If this is the case (regardless of whether there are people who wish to play it or not), it seems only right that the developer's wishes be respected. It is their creation, after all.[Edit - amazing topic title, by the way.]Best,John

The mods are available from agarchive.net:https://agarchive.net/pages/devs/gma.htmlHowever, you may want to simply get the latest version from GMA directly, since it fixes some bugs and does include a sound overhaul. The sound files aren't ogg (vorbis requires a lot more processing power and I'm not sure it existed when SOD was first written). Figment:Responses in-line:It took a while but I worked my way through all the developers listed in the archive. Unless it is not listed, nobody makes an accessible  single player version of the Mille Bornes card game.I've never heard of the game until you mentioned it, so chances are we don't have it for that reason. What is the real purpose of this archive? To list the games people can get, or that you can host, or to list all audio games regardless of their availability? The primary purpose of the archive is to provide access to old and abandoned titles (see the faq). We do not host titles that are legally uncertain, such as Bavisoft or BSC. If we do not have a title available for users, it will not be listed.I ask because I noted that you didn't list any of Spoonbill's games, and while you may not be allowed to host them on the archive, they are available from Spoonbill's site. , it seems to me like a disservice not to list their games.I explicitly contacted Spoonbill when creating the archive, and was asked not to host their games on the site. Therefore, I provided links to Spoonbill's pages, where interested parties would be able to obtain the games. And finally, I noticed that the Blindside and Grail to the Thief games aren't listed. There may not be any playable demos, but they are still audio games that are available. We don't currently have these games. If they're purchase only as Bavisoft was, they will not be hosted unless they become abandonware. Again, if we don't host a game, we don't list it, so as not to provide references to titles that we can't ensure will be around for the lifetime of the archive.More to follow in another post.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

I'll answer both questions below:zip/7z: There's two reasons I went with 7z. The first is to delineate files that have had extra processing done to them, or files that were created while working on the archive (such as archives of mods). Unmodified files will be in zip format. If a file is 7z, its been worked on by the archive and is not exactly as packaged by the developer. The second reason is storage. Windows only supports the deflate compression method when working with zip files, which really doesn't get very good compression when compared to 7z. Converting our archives of the wastes from zip to 7z saved several hundred mb of space. Several other similar examples have made a strong case for using 7z where reasonable. If the archive begins to reach its storage limit of 25gb, we may start converting more zip archives to 7z as a way to save funds on extra storage, but fortunately we're not near that point yet. There are no plans to set u
p a mirror of the entire archive. This is primarily because many of the files are available from other sources, so we'd essentially be creating triplicate copies and using up server resources that could be better spent on those games that aren't available elsewhere. There will also be a lot of changes and additions to the archive (such as the presently nonexistent game recordings section), so any mirrors would mean a tremendous amount of updating.I'm already having enough difficulty matching my local copy to the server, and really don't want to take on keeping track of a dozen community members who also want every new game on their systems.

Announcing the audiogames archive

Hi all,    As some of you may already know, over the past year or so I've been working on developing a central website to host old and abandoned games. At long last, the audiogames archive is live and ready for use. There are currently titles from 39 different developers available for download, with a total archive size of about 12.7gb.The archive also hosts mods, soundpacks, maps, and other expansions for games, though the selection of these is slightly limited at the moment. In addition, wherever possible links to developer's sites and downloads have also been included, meaning that you can use the archive as a way to look up a developer's website or a particular game's info. The archive is at (read the below notes before you visit though):www.agarchive.netThe faq and about the archive section is at:www.agarchive

This especially applies to things like adventure at c stages and top speed cars. Finally, you should make sure that you have a file archiver, preferably 7zip, installed before you download games. I, personally, say send me an email, because we can always use more people thinking of games to add.If you know html, that's even better - you can help write up pages .Looking at this topic and seeing earlier posts by slj:the archive is currently around 15 gb and growing steadily as new content is added. 25gb  would not surprise me once we launch.

Re: Possible bavisoft changes

I guess I should make some clarifications here.I'm not meaning to advertise the bavisoft games at all; I'll jump right in with all of you in saying they're hardly high quality in any way other than the acting. It was more my intent to give folks some notice that their may actually be a way to get in touch with them again. While doing research for the  audiogames archive, I'd noticed that the email address listed for their domain had changed, noted that as activity, and figured I'd throw it out here for anybody who wanted to attempt to get intouch with them again, for whatever reason.

Re: Can I use old pipe sounds?

The short answer: not legally, and if somebody did per sue you (either the original sound creators or the game dev) yes, you could potentially be in deep trouble. The longer answer: You can use the same sounds in a game, if you have the libraries they came from. Keep in mind though that a lot of game devs will mix and/or edit multiple sounds together to make what they want, so you'll have to be creative.I can tell you that several (though not all, or even most) of the pipe sounds came from soni's 1001 sound effects collection. This is a great little pack, covering a massive number of different subjects, for sale for $10. Its a great starting collection for any dev, and has a lot of sounds that will work without any editing at all.The specific sounds I remember being used (though I must admit to limited pipe 1.0 exposure and not having the pack open as I'm writing this)  are the movement between pipe sounds. If the cut scenes use the same s
ounds as pipe 2.0, then the radio voices are also from this pack.

Re: Gaming Computer for Audio Games

Short version: don't worry about it. Get a box that runs your operating system well, and play away.long version:Agreed with everything said here. I'll break down components:video: forget graphics. completely. The only situation I've ever had graphics issues was when I tried to run teraformers in 3d mode on a windows 98 box with a 4mb graphics chip.my processor examples:p2(350mhz) works well for some stuff, not so well for others. You'll notice games running a bit slower than they otherwise might, but they'll still do it. If you only play on this and don't come from a faster box, you probably won't notice much of a difference.p4 at 2.8ghz (10 years old ish): runs pretty much everything like a pro. Its not 100% - and there are things that can potentially slow down if the game is doing massive amounts of number crunching, but you'll have to work to find them.Intel core i5 480m/Intel Pentium e5300 (5 y
ears old on average): You games think you've got a chance? Nice try.Ram: This is the one component I'd take seriously. very min 2gb for win7, 1gb for xp. Twice or more than that highly recommended. Most games are polite to ram, most of the time. Don't bet on it, and don't short change yourself and your machine.storage: 25gb of available space for installations is more than enough for almost anything. If you fill that, and actively play all the games you've got, you're pretty game crazy. 100gb of space will probably last you years of both installed games and the setup/zip files. As a comparison, the game archive project I mentioned briefly in another thread is currently about 25 gb, and I'm being obsessive about collecting past versions of everything I can get download links for.Ssd or hdd: If you're getting an ssd, do it for the computer, not for the games. I've tried running a number of games from a ram disk (whi
ch is faster than an ssd) and noticed zero difference as opposed to my spinning drive. You've pretty much got to move all the way to USB2.0 in order to notice anything, and even then its only in certain circumstances.

Re: Pole, would you install a program in d?

The answer to this really depends on the setup of the specific machine. On my laptop, I have the following setup:c:\ main internal hddd:\ optical disk drivee:\ sd card that I leave in at nearly all timesI have desktops with the following configurations:machine 1:c:\ windows partition of main internal hddd:\ optical disk drivez:\ the rest of the internal hddmachine 2:c:\ windows internal hddd:\ second hdd for games/programs and other non-permanent datae:\ third hdd for perment data I dont want on the small c driveIf youre considering making a setup that installs directly to d:\, then youre probably signing up for trouble - on most machines thats going to be a cd, but may also be a recovery partition, a flash drive, or nothing at all.If you mean the question in the more vague sense of who installs games to non-standard locations then Im going to be a
bigtime yes - I have games and programs scattered across so many different devices Im lucky if I can remember whats holding what.

Re: Poll for upcoming robot battles game: Text to speech or voice files?

I too, vote screen reader, and strongly so.I played exactly one game of traders of known space, and it completely turned me off VGAs titles - a person should not try to fake being a screen reader. Use voice acting for characters, not for messages.I also really like smaller titles - just because we have big disks doesnt mean we need to declare a vendetta to fill them up.In a counterpoint to this - beatstar did a good job with the self voicing. Its a little choppy when reading numbers, but all and all it works well for what it needs to do. That said, beatstars not an rpg. It only has a few messages, and presumably this would have a whole lot more than that.

I wasnt planning to announce this here quite yet, but Im currently in the process of building such an archive. The plan will be to have all legally distributal content, including abandonware games/keygens where the author has made them available (bsc specifically excluded because the author doesnt want it distributed - we will not be committing piracy).Im not quite sure how were going to handle distribution of games quite yet.The current archive is 10.9gb in size and growing.Since the cats out of the bag, if youre interested in contributing installers or time to the archive, please feel free to contact me at:jpcarnemolla gmail.com(replace space with at sign, of course), with the following info:*a brief overview of what you have; something like:Total 7.8gb, mostly well-known and recent developers. Windows only, limited to no interactive fiction or dos-based games.*Info on your
file transfer capabilities, something like:I have 1gb of available upload space, and can leave files up for a max of two weeks.*How youd prefer to work, something like:Id rather just zip up a bunch of installers and let you process them, as opposed to sending specific files.*How well you know where your games came from/who made what, something like:I know everything produced in the last five years, but nothing before that.*Whether youd be willing to help me in organizing the archive, in addition to supplying installers. The archive is currently making heavy use of dropbox features - but you wont need a dropbox account to contribute.

Id need a bit more info to implement this, but either way I dont think itd be tough to do.The two interfaces Im currently looking at are:*a small program, to which you make a shortcut on the desktop. You then activate that shortcut via hotkey, the program runs and announces the contents of the clipboard.*A program that runs in its own window, and monitors the contents of the clipboard. Itd probably update 5 or 10 times per second, presuming thatd be enough to catch all the info you needed from the game, and whenever the contents of the clipboard changes, itd speak it through your reader/sapi. The downside to this is that itd happily read out a 50 page document youve just copied to paste somewhere else. Let me know which one youre thinking of - either one should take me less than 5 minutes to put together.

@ian:Because of the way FTLs set up, the pinpoint accuracy you mention isnt actually that much of a problem. At any point in the game, you can pause the clock, and review information. You can also issue orders while the games paused, which means that you can take as much time as you want to figure out what to do next.I think the difficult part of making FTL completely accessible would be getting access to the games buttons and interface. If it is 100% graphical we may be a bit out of luck - do you know if it is?I think Im going to contact the devs in the next week or so and try to figure out if I can get a hold of a demo copy of some sort to play around with.

I was introduced to this game recently, and it seems pretty interesting. Unfortunately during my (extremely brief) test with nvda, it seemed completely inaccessible.Does anybody here have any knowledge of this game/whether or not its workable from a VI perspective? If not, has anybody contacted the devs (I may do this myself if nobody has)?

Re: FTL (faster than light)

The game appears to be completely cross platform.Based on their site (www.ftlgame.com) it may also run in a browser.Check out the website for more info - I have only a limited knowledge of it.@Ironcross:You never know until you try. My reason for bringing it up here was that the name seemed familiar, and I figured Id be better off asking just in case folks knew something I didnt. The devs in this situation are a two-man team, so that could either be very good or very bad (willingness to try unconventional things/no time) as far as implementing accessability (presuming its not already there in some form) goes.

Re: a link to the last beta of misteries of the ancients please

I sware Id posted a response to this topic when it came out... apparently not. Most of what Id said has already been covered. The dev has said hes intending to put a version up on his site a few times over the last several months, but nothings materialized, at least to my knowledge (there was no download on usagamesinteractive.com when I wrote this response originally).Hes requested that the game not be distributed due to the fact he doesnt want to field support requests for a beta product thats no longer in development.

Re: An appology to all

It is your responsibility, as a developer and the one storing users personal information, to store that information securely. It is not the responsibility of the users of your product to make said product secure.

Re: Looking for Mud Splat

Unfortunately the download page on that site is looking for contact info, and hasnt been updated since 2005.I presume they would have previously emailed a link or something, but Ive got no faith that its actually still up and running. Thats why I was hoping somebody on here could upload the setup.

Re: Looking for someone who has beaten Castaways, or is good at it.

I wouldnt say Im a pro, but Ive beaten most of the missions (and am pretty sure I could do the ones I havent). If you need help with something just shoot me an email and we can coordinate some time where we can both log on and play out a couple of them.
