Re: miri phone mirroring to windows

So, you can play the iPhone audio through Windows by installing the Bluetooth Audio Receiver app from the Microsoft Store. That will allow your Windows PC to be the receiving end of a Bluetooth audio connection, just like your usual Bluetooth headphones or speaker would be. Doing so will allow you to listen to everything that comes from your phone, but you'll still be required to use your phone to navigate etc.

Some electrician or sighted person who knows something about power connections etc can add you some wall switches behind the actual light switch that can be controlled via an app and will integrate perfectly fine with the actual physical switch, so that you can shut everything off either via app or via assistants like Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant. There are some from Shelly, for example, which are cheap ($20 per switch), don't require a bridge but WiFi only and are rather small.

Going with Camlorn too, overclocking a mobile CPU almost never is a good idea, and a laptop with such a weak CPU doesn't seem to have the power to back the CPU up when overclocked. So nope, guess you'll have to get a new machine to speed things up. Re-installing Windows usually speeds things up for a while, but it will slow down to a crawl again eventually.

Not everyone needs this though, and its deffinitely more risky than just installing the CPU and going with what it does by default, especially if you don't know what you're doing, but most boards that are meant for overclocked usage already have dedicated tools to configure your overclocked setup built into UEFI and thus take alot of risk out of the equation.

thing is, there are CPUs which are built with overclocking in mind and which are designed to get overclocked without risking lifetime loss, as long as you stay within valid parameters and your PC setup is done correctly, including proper cooling etc. If you're trying the same with a non-overclockable CPU, its basically pure risk, but using a K or X CPU (Intel) instead will work just fine to a certain degree.

Re: a couple questions about independence stuff

OK, so how this works is going to the counter and asking for assistance. Thats how you do it spontaneously. Nowadays, especially since COVID-19 is still a thing and will probably be for quite a while, most shops, at least in germany, can be called, telling them what you want to buy, they will tell you when you can head over and grab your stuff, and they'll probably have everything prepared for you just to take it with you.Another alternative are local delivery services, like we have over here in Germany as well, although those are regional offers. We've a service which supports ordering in a few local stores, they'll send someone over to shop all the stuff you selected, getting in contact with you if they aren't able to find something or if they needed to take something instead of something else, and then they will buy it in your local store and take it to your home. That also works on the same day, just like the other two ways. You won't have to pay transport cost in any of those cases. The most common way though is just to enter the store and ask for assistance, it might however happen that they don't have the capacity atm or that you'll have to wait until someone can take a few minutes off for you.

well, virtualization is basically a no-brainer. All you need to do is enable a BIOS/UEFI option in both cases (no matter AMD or Intel) and the virtualization software (Virtualbox, QEmu, VMWare) will do the rest. It even works with Hyper-V nowadays, which is a great improvement over the previous versions where you basically had to decide for one technology over the other, while you actually needed both.Mac OS virtualization btw isn't a problem either, just unlock your VMWare and you're good to go. But since its basically not allowed to do so either, you'll probably stay away from it unless you're aware of what you're doing.

Depending on your requirements. If you're not planning on playing any games on higher details, integrated graphics might be enough, but to be on the safe side, getting a 1060 or 950 should be better than any integrated graphics unit to date and be rather future safe. I already discussed the AMD/Intel debate above, which CPU is recommended for which purpose, so please go and read that again, think about it (which use-case fits you the most) and if you still got questions after that, don't hesitate to ask, but i'm not going to repeat myself here.

@ilya: "building" a PC, means you are going to put all the parts together, is not a good idea when doing this for the first time with your new $2000+ powerhouse of a machine, you will most deffinitely do something wrong which might end up causing serious issues or defects. I'd recommend getting some already defect parts (boards, cpus, cases, power supplies, whatever) or using an old PC that you don't need anymore so that you can get an idea of how the parts actually look like, including the connectors, the cables and basically everything. You can try building something with really cheap parts before you go ahead and invest alot of money to buy good stuff which you yourself in the end connect to the wrong cable and blow everything up, so to speak.

Re: Building a desktop PC

2021-01-30 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : Hijacker via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Building a desktop PC

OK, power consumption. There is an easy way to approach this, and a more complicated one. complicated first: check out all the components and make sure to decide upon wether you want external graphics or not, because that will drastically raise your power consumption if you decide to get an external graphics card, means non-CPU-integrated. Then, after you've decided, go check out the power consumption of those devices, sum it up, add a bit of safety on top and get a power supply that is a bit above that value. Or, easy way, get a power supply that is not to fat, but still not on the lower end. E.g. taking a 300W power supply for your machine won't be enough, and 500W might be fine with no external graphics card, but as soon as a powerhouse graphics card with 2 power connectors comes into play, 500W might already be not enough. I decided to go with a 750W power supply those days, and it runs and runs and runs, even with powerful graphics and vverclocked CPU/RAM. On the other hand, more powerful power supplies will usually drain a bit more power on standby / low operation level, this then again means a kinda higher bill at the end of the year, but we're talking about a few small bucks here, not quite alot. Now the Intel/AMD debate. AMD seem to have more cores nowadays, while Intel CPUs seem to still have the better single core performance. Most games require single-core performance though, since they in most cases aren't multithreaded. More complex algorithms, video/audio editing on the other hand profit from more cores, which makes AMD the more prominent choice here. You'll have to settle for one direction though, or pick a solution right in the middle, which will probably be one of the more expensive Intel ones, since they have quite an amount of cores and speed. At least thats my take on it. Everyone thinks different about that topic though, so feel free to settle for your own oppinion. The Be Quiet Pure Wings 2 are running in my system at the moment too, and they are just fine, really, really quiet. My case is from be quiet as well and a bit outdated already I guess, but it has like 6 coolers running, not counting the CPU cooler which you should probably get a dedicated one, since the boxed ones which sometimes come with the CPU are usually garbage. That was my approach on saving because I didn't want to build a water-cooling system for that PC yet, first because I think it isn't needed, because I will never need the power that would justify a water-cooled system, and second because its a lot more expensive and risky (one single leak and you can throw your hardware away if it ends up badly).Honestly, I don't think that any blind person would actually need (not want, thats a different story) a water-cooled system. A rule of thumb I learned is that you don't want to invest into a water-cooled system unless you're using 2 or more full-blown graphics cards, like a 3070 upward. Air-cooled systems will easily be able to handle the heat below those specs. Watching my temperatures, even with overclocked CPU and RAM and a 2080 ti running at benchmarks, my temperature levels stay in a green, sometimes yellow range. And since blind people don't play Cyberpunk 2077 at ultra specs, you seriously simply don't need to throw the money out of the window, if you seriously want to, i'm here and will gladly take it.Its just the car question. You could buy a car that can go up to a several amount of speed, but you're living in a country where you are allowed to speed up to half the speed that your car can go at most of the time, so why bother paying for things you won't ever use in the first place? Plus, the engines in that car will probably drain mor gas by default, which will end up being expensive for no reason in the long run.TLDR: sure its great to have a powerhouse of a machine sitting in your corner, you know, you can tell your friends "oh my machine is beating yours to a crisp" or "oh, your game is lacking? well, my PC doesn't even break a sweat". But thats probably all the fun you can get out of paying a thousand or more bucks than actually needed, and that most of the time feels like a pretty painful investment for just a bit of fun.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

well, a low gain has the disadvantage that the microphone preamp kicks in and usually gets pretty noisy, especially in cheaper devices like the Olympus. If that wasn't the case, we would always lower the input gain as much as  possible, because we could just boost it up within the DAW no problem. Thats why we can actually control the gain whatsoever, and thats the reason why auto gain is there. It enables us to record situations with varying levels, like a new year's party, because the gain automatically adjusts as soon as a very loud noise appears or a comparably quiet environment comes up. As soon as you can expect the volume of the environment to stay pretty stable however, its encouraged to disable auto gain, measure the proper gain settings yourself and record the situation with the same gain during the entire time to get the best results. It always depends on the situation. But I guess thats already common knowledge here.

The thermostats are easily changeable, and even if you buy and use some, just keep the old ones and in case of leaving the place, just remove your smart ones and put the old ones back. Same goes for light switches, roller shutters, etc etc. The only things you need to discuss are permanent changes, everything else is fine in any case.

Re: Blind humans and living situations?

Germany here again, living together with my sighted partner. Currently writing my master thesis in computer science and working as a programmer for seven years now in parallel to achieving bachelor and master degree. During those years I was on my own for some time, moved 1-2 times and now i'm finally in a flat together with my girlfriend. Working pays the bills I guess, in addition to the financial support from the country. Cooking is a matter of lazyness most of the time, just as any other household stuff usually is, but household tasks need to be done, cooking doesn't usually need thanks to my girlfriend doing it.

Re: Smart home users around?

I'm going all in on all that smart home thing and am always looking for ways to smarten things up even more. Right now, i've got an openHAB running on a Raspberry Pi 4 here, which is basically the center of my Smart Home. Siri and Alexa both are used as voice assistants communicating through openHAB to all my different devices set in their own ecosystems. My smart thermostats for example are Tado ones, i've got a smart weather station from Netatmo as well as Philips Hue for smart lighting. I've got a ZWave network connected to my Raspi as well to control Window/Door sensors and smart plugs, and some shelly-based self-made roller shutters too. I've got location tracking through my iPhone set up, so that I can reliably detect if i'm at home or not to do some actions like close the shutter when i'm not at home. Oh, and the latest addition to my smart home is a vacuum cleaner which works just fine in that setup as well. So yeah, if you've got any question, guess you can come back at me.

Yes, they will send it back to you, the package doesn't matter. In fact, they'll probably use a different, new package when sending it back to you after they repaired it. No, the RMA goes inside, next to the trek. And shipping label on the outside, obviously.

Re: I think I might need a computer lesson or two...

YouTube limits their upload speed on purpose. You don't need 60 MBPS upload stream if the video you're currently watching requires about 1 MBPS to stream lag free, and 3 MBPS to tolerate some buffering in advance. Thats why you don't get maximum speed on every page you're visiting on the net, some servers simply don't have the power, or don't want to give you all they've got for specific reasons. Its always best to do a speedtest, as someone before me already said. That way you can find out if you're actually just downloading with 3 MBPS in total, or if YouTube is actually the limiting factor. If your speedtest ends up telling you the full 60 MBPS, but YouTube-dl comes with 3 only, then YouTube just restricts your speed, thats it. Then again, if your speedtest ends up telling you that you only got 3 MBPS, you should further investigate if your local WiFi or your ISP is at fault.

Re: PC Microphone suggestions?

My way of looking at things is that usually, as soon as a product tries to cover too much space, like the Yeti does with all of its different patterns, its starting to lose quality when looking at one of the features specifically. Means, I'd always prefer a simple Mic like the NT-USB with one pattern which was specifically made for that pattern over a mic in the same price range, but with two or more patterns, because the chances are high that it can do those patterns, but not as well as the one pattern I actually need. So, when recording Podcasts or doing voice recordings for streams etc, you don't need stereo recordings. In fact, stereo recordings were quite a hyped thing a few years back, although they are usually just needed when doing field recordings, which is not the usecase for the Yeti IMHO. That means that a single-pattern mic for $150 should be preferred over a $150 mic with many wannabe usecases like the Yeti. Thats why i'd stick to the NT-USB instead of the Yeti.

I once had a Samson Meteor, and my experiences were not so great. The Mic quality itself was okay, but there was a permanent background noise on that things which was independent from the device it was connected to, so it must have been one of the internal components of the device itself. That shouldn't happen with a device as expensive as $100. I thus wouldn't go for Samson anymore, but that goes under personal preference I guess.

It does have that, coming with the ReaFir stock VST plugin. It has a built-in subtraction mode, which will create a noise profile based on a short audio sample you're playing once, and can apply that to as many tracks, items or folders of tracks as you want, even the entire project via the master track.

Well, totally with Camlorn here. Loud noises is not a blind's man problem here, its all around the place, just go and ask some sighted handheld player like 3DS, Switch etc, everyone will ask them to lower the volume/mute the device as soon as they have it running all the time ever so quietly. And nope, there are enough TV adversaries etc which you cannot watch just by "watching" them, like news etc, you'll often need to listen to whwat the people say instead of just watching them talk.Other than that, its just a matter of preference here. You don't want to wear headphones? Fine, but don't feel offended if people tell you to because you're too loud. But I feel like i'm just repeating other people's points here.

So Netflix and those kind of streaming apps should work out of the box, at least thats what I'd hope. When it comes to VLC, things seem to get a bit tricky. I found the following when googling:redditSo it seems to be possible, but people seem to be unsure about which options to check in the options to get it working properly.Netflix etc would be no problem with set-top boxes and not even via WiFi, although you could just get a network adapter for the Fire TV Stick and connect it to your LAN network as well. Some set-top boxes already have a LAN connector, the Apple TV does. Although you are right, playing BluRays that way would be tricky. I do have a NAS in my home which hosts all the movies and blurays and that stuff, you could do a similar thing with built-in windows network shares as well without having to pay anything, but if you can get VLC to work properly then you can just do as intended and work with your PC only.

Dolby Atmos and HDMI ARC is no problem, but PC and Dolby Atmos might become one, since there are not alot codecs for PC which can actually decode or forward Dolby Atmos via HDMI AFAIK. When building an Atmos-capable home-cinema setup, you should stick with some kind of set-top box which can properly do Dolby Atmos. There are pretty cheap and accessible ones, like the Amazon Fire TV Stick or, depending on your already existing setup, the Apple TV, although that one is a bit more expensive.

Well, drivers and BIOS are two totally different things. There are accessible driver update tools out there, but none can update your BIOS as well, since every mainboard manufacturer uses different techniques to update your BIOS. Some allow BIOS flashing only within the BIOS (or UEFI nowadays) itself, by putting it onto a zip file and having to flash that from an USB drive.

With that set of tutorials at hand and the CAVI courses being free to download for everyone, I wouldn't say that REAPER's learning curve is something to worry if you're just planning to do simple goldwave-like audio editing. Just remember that you need to buy a commercial license if you're planning to sell your products you create with REAPER, but even this license costs only about $250, which still is nothing compared to all other DAWs out there.

The audio swiss knife which is accessible and can do everything from sound designing to music production is REAPER, and it won't be replaced soon I guess. You also don't need to pay for it, although paying the 50 bucks for basically almost lifetime access is deffinitely worth it.

Re: Windows 10 audio implimation SUCKS

That lag might go away after rebooting. It often depends on the driver though how laggy or non-laggy things are, some drivers automatically enable energy saving mode which interrupts the connection to the speakers while no audio signal is coming through, and re-establishing that connection when an audio signal arrives takes some time. This can usually be toggled somewhere either in the driver settings or by disabling the energy saving power plan of Windows.

Re: blindness and overclocking

Lol, meltdown and spectre still worth discussing?I like to compare them to nuclear bombs. The material to build those was there for thousands of years, but we just recently discovered how to build those. As soon as the first one, no matter how complicated it was, found out how to build them, everyone could do it, because knowledge gets shared all around the world on a daily basis. And just like nuclear bombs, spectre and meltdown cannot just be used against single targets, but you can write trojans, worms etc which infiltrate thousands of systems if needed and try to gather information there, using those affore-mentioned security problems. Thus, they still are relevant.Of course, if you aren't planning to operate your system online and you are applying strict security measures, you can disable patching those security issues to get a few more percents of power out of your cpu, but as long as you stay online, patching those is recommended for a reason.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: blindness and overclocking

OK, I didn't bother reading the last 25 posts, since the first 5 weren't right in the first case.I overclocked my PC here, at least the CPU, I don't see any reason to overclock my GPU right now.I built my PC from scratch with both Mac (Hackintosh) support and overclocking in mind. Thats why my PC can handle overclocking pretty well (overclockable CPU and overclocking-supportive board).I got an Intel I7-8700K, which normally runs on 3,7 GHZ and can go up to 4,5 GHZ in boost mode. Overclocking took it up to 4,1 GHZ with up to 5 GHZ in boost mode, and that boost is deffinitely noticeable, although not in daily use, but only if doing something performance-critical, like video conversion/encoding, data analysis etc.It is however totally right that you can seriously damage your PC components if you don't know what you're doing. Thats why just accessing Afterburner and setting some values won't take you very far. It's recommended to overclock only supported CPUs, which are designed to be alot more tolerant to such processes in the first place, and take overclocking-supportive boards into consideration. Those do have support within the UEFI and also have guides to walk you through the software-side process of configuring the overclocking parameters for CPU and RAM, maybe even GPU if supported. In the end, it turns out to be quite expensive and maybe its not worth it, depending on what you want to do. I probably don't need those 0,5 GHZ, I could have payed a few hundred bucks less for a PC with close-enough specs but no overclocking if I didn't decide to try my skills on overclocking in the first place.Oh, and its deffinitely not doable without sighted help, that has to be taken into consideration as well.Best Regards.Hijacker

Well, most of the time there are ways to bridge your local LAN to the new VPN subgroup. I've got an OpenVPN server running for instance which of course creates a new subgroup which contains all the VPN-connected clients, but it allows those clients to reach out to all other devices in the local LAN as well. I can do all sort of things that way. That would also be the way i'd recommend here, it just requires you to open one or two ports, depending on the protocol you're going to use, but you can access everything on the network you're connecting to.Best Regards.Hijacker

I also don't want to blow a link out there and see dozens of people download stuff from my NAS when I cannot control it, since that will always use my private internet connection speed, I usually use Dropbox (or Cubbit in my case) for that.

3 GB of RAM? Are you sure you aren't just running a x86 version of Windows? Because RAM is either built-in as one block of RAM, and there aren't 3 GB RAM blocks out there AFAIK, or they are built-in as 2 blocks, connected in a dual connection, which would require both RAM blocks to be of equal size to work best, and that again would mean that you'd have two 1.5 GB RAM units, which also don't exist IMHO.Sounds like you'd have 4 GB or more, but since your Windows is x86, it can only address 3 GB of your RAM.Best Regards.Hijacker

OK, so i'm currently running a Synology DS918+ with all 4 slots filled with 8 TB drives + a DX517 with another 2 8 TB drives (yet) in a RAID 5, making a total of 6 x 8 TB - 8 TB = 40 TB of space and 1 drive redundancy. As you can probably imagine, backing that up is a rather expensive task. Services like Backplaze are out of the question due to being too expensive. The most important data get mirrored to my parent's NAS regularly and all the less important stuff gets backed up weekly on external drives which aren't physically apart from each other, but are offline when not in use due to USB-controlled power sockets. Then again, i've got several users on my NAS who can grab all the data they want, so most of my stuff probably is already mirrored somewhere among them.As they said 20 years ago, if you want a reliable backup, just create an FTP server and the web will do that for you, for free.Best Regards.Hijacker

Except the prefader USB return the Soundcraft Signature 22 MTK seems to be what you want. The USB channels are prefader, but post gain, so you still have some control about the volume before feeding it into your DAW, so thats at least something. It doesn't have MIDI AFAIK, but if I didn't forget anything, it seems to be what you want, plus a bit more, and you won't need to get an additional audio interface to handle all your inputs.

Re: which mixer should i buy for general usage/ Also a soundcard question.

Hi,so, 6 to 8 devices and all of them in stereo makes up to 16 channels already, so you won't end up getting a very cheap mixer which suits your needs.Depending on what you want (subgroups, master, USB interface included or not), I guess you'll end up $300 or higher.I found out that having at least two subgroups which end up being stereo is nice to have two separate mixes, one for you to listen to e.g. your screen reader, TeamTalk and some music, and the master output just sending out what you want to record with your PC, like your mic and your music. That would of course require you to feed all those signals in independently, which is possible with some mixers, like my Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK, which is a multitrack mixer and allows for USB return and therefore offers 6 audio devices to Windows/Mac/Linux which you can handle separately. Thats nice, but won't be necessary for you if all you want to do is just connect that many different devices and mix them up together in a single stereo mix and play that one back to your PC.

VMWare player is free and works great, so why not use it? You can probably also use QEmu and Virtualbox, both should be usable, but both are not as powerful as VMWare. Docker for Windows is usable, but its entire purpose is something different than running an actual OS that you can use actively and thus would be overkill and much to complicated for such a situation.

Re: weird issues with NVDA when starting up computer.

HDD? Yep, then its normal. Windows is most likely starting up multiple programs at once, NVDA requires many, many small files which need to be loaded, which is especially slow on HDDs. So yeah, either get a SSD, or stay calm and wait for it to load.

Re: Setting up Raspberry Pi

You'll most likely go for Linux, and Linux is always controllable via CLI and GUI, although CLI is more accessible for VI users. As you already said, it always depends on what you want to do. If you're searching for a laptop alternative, like taking notes, browsing the web etc, i'm not a fan of Linux at all, but in the end all of that depends on you. Decide on a problem you want to solve using a Raspi and we can probably tell you more about the way you can go.

Re: password managers

The Solo keys are one-part components, the Solo as well as the SOMU, and thus there are no parts which can fall apart. Its still a thing though, you can of course crush it under your foot if you so desire, but the Solo for example is just a thing USB device which comes with a cover you put around it which improves the grip and allows it to be attached to a keyring. The SOMU is so small that you can plug it into an USB slot and it will almost entirely disappear within it, so no way to damage or lose the component whilst in there. The SOMU however isn't your usual daily security helper on the go, because its ment to stay in its place so that you have additional security without having to plug the Solo in and out all the time. Its good as e.g. a cheap backup solution, if you want to be on the safe side, stick with a Solo, that thing is ment to be portable and, without having seen a Yubikey yet, I think its robust and works well, even after using it for over a year now and plugging it in and out several times per day.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: TTHub

If they setup the teamtalk servers themselves manually, it might take even longer, depending on when they work and with regards to the upcoming weekend. But waiting for at least 24 hours before contacting them again seems to be a good way to start things.

Free? No. Paid? Yes. Check out SoundMorphs Robotic Life libraries, those offer a wide variety of robot sounds, including many footsteps.

Re: password managers

@Ethin: rest assured, you and me are unable to look behind the encryption-internals of Solo, but others are, and they are supporting it every day to improve its security. You can only upgrade Solo with its own firmware, as long as you don't get a hacker version, which is basically unlocked so you can really play with it, but the normal, secure version only supports upgrading with newer and signed versions of the official solo firmware, nothing else, approved by several security experts by reading and understanding the code as well as testing it themselves, which you can do yourself if you so desire, getting a Solo key to play around with is not that expensive too. BTW, not even Solo themselves is able to read the internal encryption key of the Solo keys with invalid or valid new firmwares alike, so no chance, even for hackers, to get this key out of the controller on purpose.I don't want to say that Yubekeys are bad at all. They are working fine and they are out on the market much longer than Solo, which is one of the reasons why they are so popular, but I personally don't like the idea of not being able to upgrade my hardware with new features when necessary. I just wanted to say that Solo is much cheaper than the Yubikeys and comes with the same feature set, plus its open source in hardware and software, and due to its popularity, all kind of experts validated both and are happy with the results, trusting in Solo each day. After all, there are many more U2F key distributors out there and all of them have their pros and cons, if you want to use one of those yourself, its probably best to inform about multiple of them and decide for the one you want to stick around with, but for people who don't have the money for a Yubikey right from the start and want to see how U2F actually works, getting a cheaper alternative like Solo might be the better option.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: password managers

If you want something more effordable with the same feature list, stick to Solo: See here.Supported them via Kickstarter from the first day, the same feature set like Yubikey and others, with the exception that they don't offer a Lightning version for the use on e.g. an iPhone, but it should be possible to get a USB-C/Lightning adapter or an USB A/Lightning Adapter and use them on an iPhone as well. The Solo tap with NFC builtin goes for $35, which is the most expensive one, USB-C on that one costs $40 and thats it.Solo explicitely decided not to go for Bluetooth, because the Bluetooth protocol just isn't secure enough to be used for security purposes, due to being sniffable pretty easily.GPG support is not fully finished yet, but its in the works and should be in the finishing steps, so we can expect that to arrive in like one or two months as well, without any additional cost of course.Best Regards.Hijacker
