Re: How do you write in PDFs?

Could you perhaps copy and paste the text into Word and then do your highlighting/annotating? That's probably not a great way to do it because of how the text is structured in the PDF, but that's the only way I can think of that would satisfy your teacher's requirements. Are you using NVDA or JAWS? I know JAWS at least has a text analyzer that will report that kind of information as you navigate throughout a document.

Weird issue with Code Factory's SAPI Eloquence

2021-02-02 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : leibylucw via Audiogames-reflector

Weird issue with Code Factory's SAPI Eloquence

Hi all,I recently purchased a license for Code Factory's SAPI version of Eloquence. I had used the trial until it expired. When that happened, I kept getting the same text, "please register this product" being announced by Eloquence when I would open the KitchensInc game menu. I registered with my license, but it's still giving me the same message, only in KitchensInc. I can use other games/applications just fine, like Sequence Storm, but KitchensInc is not catching up to my fully-licensed Eloquence. I uninstalled and reinstalled both, but that doesn't seem to fix the issue. I also deactivated my license and reactivated upon reinstallation and even deleted the leftover folders in Program Files (X86). I have no clue what could be causing this behavior. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Re: how much does blindness effect employment

2021-01-27 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : leibylucw via Audiogames-reflector

Re: how much does blindness effect employment

I think what's being overlooked is the human experience facet of this discussion. People generally look for ways to be fulfilled. Employment isn't the only way to achieve this, but it's one of the most common. When I talk about blind folks wanting employment, the paycheck is usually thought of or treated as a secondary benefit rather than the sole reason for getting a job in the first place. Humans look for ways to feel complete. Acquiring a job would give them a sense of purpose. It then follows that their sense of purpose is what feeds, houses, and takes care of them. Some folks may be looking for work just as a means to pay bills. That's a regular occurrence, too. What I'm driving at here is that blind people are so deprived of employment opportunities that fulfilling themselves on an emotional, mental, spiritual, (use whichever adjective you please) level is the primary reason they want to work. Perhaps it's just the blind people I've encountered in my own network that feel this way, but their desire to work never came primarily from a place of "I want to get off of SSI and earn my own money." The first thing they talk about is "I just want to work," which to me, roughly translates to, "I'm tired of sitting around doing nothing." Sustaining themselves and not relying on SSI is just another bonus, but it isn't the driving reason (again, in my observations).

Re: how much does blindness effect employment

Often times, employment opportunities for the blind come in the form of manual/factory work housed by nonprofits for the blind. These are your lighthouses and other similar organizations. That is to say, a decent percentage of blind folks working in America are working within the scope of blindness - these opportunities exist purposely to employ blind people. Now, don't take that for granted. A job is a job. If they don't do the work, who will? It also doesn't hurt that they cease their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and earn a paycheck. These are still low-paying jobs, however, and when you consider how physically-strenuous these positions can be, it makes you think twice about taking one of your own.The sad but honest truth is that out of the blind folks who are employed, they occupy a small handful of domains. The top ones are massage therapy, psychology/social work, and tech. I'm speaking in general here. There are certainly exceptions to this rule with plenty of examples; but these exceptions are just that, exceptions. People have to fight tooth and nail to get through educational programs, access barriers, etc to get to the positions they are in. I've been pursuing my undergraduate career for 6 years now. I continue to do it because I like what I'm learning and truly want a career of my own. Not everybody is fortunate to have the same access to resources to allow them to pursue such a thing. These are time, money, motivation, support, etc.Sometimes I hear a blind person squeal with joy about a customer service job they just took. It at some point becomes pathetic, not because the person is excited over such a position, but it reflects just how starved blind people truly are for work. It is sad to me that so many people would settle for something so menial in nature. Again, this is absolutely not a comment on who these blind folks are as people. This is a comment on how blind people as a second class of citizens are left behind. This is to say that they are so deprived of opportunities to the point where being hired as a factory worker folding cloth or running a machine is their chance of something close to a "normal" life, but this also comes with the exhausting responsibility of waking up hours before your shift even starts to make sure you catch the multiple trains or buses to get to your place of work on time.My whole point to this is that blind people want something more than just sitting around. Of course, there are certain folks who are happy with settling for their SSI or other assistance, but it is fairly commonplace for blind people to want to pursue employment. I completely understand why we often times deal with anxiety, depression, and other poor mental health problems. It is that difficult to find work, let alone meaningful work you enjoy.

I personally use [Tab Manager Pluswhich allows you to switch tabs through a simple search. Press Alt+M then navigate to the final edit field and type the first few letters of the tab name. Hitting enter should automatically bring you to that tab. I also usually don't have any more than 9 tabs open at once, so the CTRL+number method works just as good as long as you remember which tab is which.

Re: An inquiry about Mathematics courses and Braille

I like what I've read so far, and as a person who has completed the calc track for a CS degree, here's what I'll say:If you can help it, get Braille for everything (assuming you're highly proficient at it). I got all my Calc books in Braille, and it helped tremendously when it came to drilling problems. Even try to get your exams in Braille, although I didn't do this.I worked with a scribe who was also a senior mathematics major. He used the Draftsman to delineate graphics to me.Above mentioned scribe was also my notetaker. He was quite familiar with LaTeX and would author his notes ultimately in a simple Tex file. I would then use Duxbury to translate into Braille which worked flawlessly. I then used my Braille display to read all of his notes. As far as output, he quite literally was the ultimate scribe. If I could either describe to him the shapes I wanted him to draw, or if I could draw a simple sketch on the Draftsman, he would just draw it on regular paper that would eventually be handed into the professor. The same goes for my mathematical work. I would do the work on my Braille display and then tell him my work.I found this to be the smoothest workflow in my undergraduate course load. I got an A in Calc 1 and an A+ in Calc 2 where the overall average grade in the latter was somewhere around a 65-70%. It was precisely because of having access to someone who knew their stuff really well that I was able to avoid the burden of learning the discipline and patience for reading and writing the math on my own. It's taxing, stressful, and has the potential to deeply interfere with the learning process. I have done very well in math because I was so focused on the material. Now, others have found workflows that seemed to have worked, so I'm not contending the "highway or my way" nonsense, but if it is possible, try to find someone (in college) who knows their stuff at an A+ level. As far as high school, I can't really offer much in the way of good advice. You're already ahead of the game in that regard, but I fear high schools lack the same amount of resources to ensure great success for blind students in STEM subjects, and this is where enrolling at a proper university would be of great benefit, so I do apologize for neglecting to offer direct advice to your College Board and other current testing issues.

One of the biggest gripes of the Sony WH1000XM series is that the microphone quality isn't that spectacular, but if you're a person who isn't taking many calls, especially while you're out and about, it most likely wouldn't be much a downside anyways.

@14 no. The microphones are not transmitting through bluetooth. They're transmitting directly to the headphone/earbud itself (i.e.: the AirPods Pro just pump in whatever the microphones pick up directly into the same feed as whatever bluetooth audio is being transmitted). The way you're describing it would involve pumping audio picked up by your ipHone microphone which wouldn't be of use.

Re: Air Pods max/me likey/kind of want

I do wonder if people fall victim to the mentality that they need to maximize what they are capable of doing wherever they can. I don't know that the bone-conductive design really ever catered to most people, whether it was a comfort thing or otherwise. Outside of that, though, I think people like the idea of keeping headphones on or earbuds in their ears while out walking/traveling. Now, to sighted folks, this might not strike them as much of a dangerous risk, even though it totally is, but especially for blind people, I don't think it's necessary to be able to focus on the finer details of sound with respect to whatever media they're playing while negotiating a street crossing or lighted intersection. I wouldn't mind using bone-conductive headphones while out on a stroll, but I just pop one AirPod in and that's good enough for me. It doesn't inhibit my ability to judge when is a good time to cross, but that would be different if I had both in. I tried transparency with both earbuds in before and did not feel comfortable as my orientation was not as sharp as I'd like it to be. Others' mileage may vary, but I intuitively cannot see the value in transparency as it's been painted by certain blind folks as I've described as it relates to navigating outside. If those folks are okay with it, cool - more power to you folks. I just don't get quite as excited about transparency in that regard.Where I do find it valuable is on public transit, particularly longer commutes of multiple hours. If a conductor stops by to ask me a question or just check in, it is nice to turn off the active-noise canceling for 30 seconds, pump in sound around me without having to take the headphones/earbuds off, and hold a conversation if need be where I can then immediately turn the ANC back on. That to me is pretty nifty. I can't tell you how many times I've been on a train and there's either a screaming child or a loud passenger on the phone. Having the ability to block that out without blasting the volume is literally music to my ears.

Re: Air Pods max/me likey/kind of want

Apple seems to have two categories of devices as of late: devices for Apple loyalists, and devices to bring people into the Apple ecosystem. The iPhone SE is a fantastic budget device that affords folks the ability to join the Apple realm which has the potential to wrap them up in the ecosystem by further advertising other devices that may be of interest (e.g.: iPads, iPods, etc). Then you have devices like the AirPods Max which I would be hard-pressed to believe maintain a certain level of quality that holds the edge over other competitors. These headphones have the AirPods name associated with them, a marketing tactic Apple uses because they are guaranteed to know that tens of millions of people will recognize. They also have "fanboys" out there that they know will buy these headphones as more of a status symbol than a practical investment. I don't think it gets much more intricate than that, but suffice it to say that these won't be "blow your mind" quality headphones. Even the design is not conducive to commuting or traveling, and the smart case leaves the headband, arguably the most vulnerable part of the headphone, exposed and unprotected. This being a first-generation release of a new product, I'll gladly wait to see what the reviews say and wait until next year to maybe consider picking up a pair. Also consider this: The lightning to 3.5mm audio cable is sold separately (classic Apple move) for an additional $35, and replacement earcups, while practical, will run you another $70 per pair. When all is said and done, you will have spent nearly $700 for...consumer-grade headphones meant for everyday use. What others do with their money is their business, but I personally find it ridiculous to spend that amount on a device that, at best, provides some additional minor conveniences.

I'm getting sick of hearing "logo, image, night sky" every few swipes.

@39 yes - the items in the context menu that you would normally find in File Explorer appear in the context menu in Xplorer2. I have to say, it's much faster and smoother to navigate than FE. It also helped to switch from the ribbon-style menus to the traditional menu bar.

I installed Xplorer2 - it seems promising. I'm able to navigate perfectly like I would in File Explorer. I'm wondering what settings people recommend to adjust and how to adjust them. I'm seeing two different panes, and I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the two. I'll keep playing around with it, but I like it so far. Is there any benefit to the ultimate edition versus the professional?

I'll have to check Xplorer2 out since it seems to be the most popular one that's been mentioned here. I'm encountering this weird issue with NVDA where after a certain amount of time, it will just stop reading items in the list view of File Explorer. Restarting NVDA doesn't help, and I'm getting tired of having to reboot because I can't read items in FE.

Re: I just got the most awesome keyboard ever!! buckeling spring switches

The mechanical keyboard community is a very niche market, but I find typing on these boards truly enhances my typing experience when compared to how I type on scissor/membrane switches. I refuse to type on any keyboard that isn't my mechanical, unless, of course, I'm out and about and need to use my laptop's keyboard (which these days doesn't happen much).I invested in the [Drop CTRL Mechanical Keyboardin March and haven't looked back. This is just about as expensive as mechanical keyboards get, with the occasional exception popping up due to different build qualities. What I will say is this: the sturdy aluminum frame, if taken care of, will allow you to type on this board for years and years. I expect this keyboard to surpass the life of several computers. It's solid, well-built, and when paired with a memory-foam palm rest, forget about it. Typing has never felt so smooth.

I'll certainly try some of these tips out. I should also mention Internet connectivity is poor in the lobby area (terrific), which makes this an even more grueling task. Device that can read/identify mail packages

Hi all,This might be a bit of a different question. I'm looking for a product or app that is capable of reading the address labels on mail packages. Where I live, UPS, FedEx, and USPS all leave packages in my apartment lobby, and you are to pick up your packages on an honor system. Sparing the "that's a terrible system" comments, yes - I know. It's the best the property managers can do right now.Is there something that exists as a stand-alone device or an offline iPhone app that is able to read the names of recipients on typical boxed packages? I have the option to ask my roommates, but I'd like to independently identify my own mail. I was hoping for something more along the lines of a device that I can move across a package and scan like a barcode reader...Perhaps that's a bit too ideal, but I'm open to options. Seeing AI and kNFB Reader don't seem to do what I want, although it's been some time since I've tried it with the latter.Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Good PDF converter or reader?

Ideally, whenever notation-heavy literature is involved, I like to get a LaTeX source file. Depending on the nature of the notation, I may run it through Pandoc to get it in HTML or Microsoft Word formats. You can also use Duxbury to translate it into Braille, which I must say was the perfect workflow for me in my higher-level calculus courses.I contend that LaTeX is the most useful format. It's what a lot of STEM professionals use because it's a language that's concerned predominantly with content rather than presentation. That is to say it has a default process for presenting the content to readers, but authors have the capability of adjusting settings to align the presentation more closely with what they want.Edit: Agreed with @6. LaTeX is my way of writing notation beyond English. It takes just one command to render it to a PDF to distribute to anyone. You could even do your own work this way, although you may find it tedious. I know I did.I will also heavily emphasize the necessity for Braille when it comes to math. I haven't used the literacy for anything other than calculus, and was able to grasp the concepts far better and more quickly because of it. Everything else in my CS classes up until this point I've done with speech, but math is where I used Braille constantly. In fact, I didn't even worry about MathML, Math Player, etc.

If the PDFs are authored by professionals who know a thing or two about math/physics, they're probably doing so by writing it in LaTeX. Your best bet is to get the LaTeX source and using something like Pandoc to convert it into a more readable format you can work with. Having some context regarding the content you're trying to read would also help.To @3's point about reading mathematical notation, I also went the human reader/tutor route. It was highly effective for me. I'm most certainly not trying to discourage you from finding solutions to read the material on your own, but it is exceedingly difficult, and I don't know that anyone is working on ways to help solve the problem.

The ANC and phone-call quality are slightly better, they feel more comfortable to wear, and they sound terrific, but other features are pretty gimmicky, so I'd just get the XM3's.They did away with the surround-sound features that were present on the XM3's which I personally enjoyed, but I guess people thought that was also a gimmicky feature.Again, these were never marketed as next-generation headphones. Re: Sony WH1000XM4 are coming as early as August 14th

Just judging from a simple Google search that turned up reviews from top tech dogs, you're right. There doesn't seem to be any improvement despite a widespread claim that the headphones were more energy-efficient, which lead the expectation that battery life would increase. Oh well. 30 hours still isn't bad.I think most of my excitement just comes from hope rather than expectation. I know the new model is not being branded as a revolutionized successor to the XM3's.

Re: Sony WH1000XM4 are coming as early as August 14th

I'm more interested in battery life and the speak to chat feature, personally. There most likely won't be a noticeable difference in sound or active-noise canceling, so upgrading when you already have the XM3's isn't really worth it. Perhaps selling them could give you some cash towards it, but why would someone buy a second-hand pair off of you when they could just go get a brand-new pair of the same model for even cheaper? The payout wouldn't be worth it for someone trying to sell their XM3's, not now.

Re: depressed from blindness again

I had a decent amount of vision up until I was 12 or so. My late teens and early 20's were a bit rough at points. I would often sit alone in my room, ruminating on the things I used to be able to do. I would surround myself with thins that reminded me of what I liked as a kid -- movies, video games, etc. Admittedly, I would listen to YouTube playthroughs of games that I played in my younger days just so I could feel the nostalgia of being that young and also having vision. It's a very perpetual thing, I have to say. I was looking for some sort of satisfaction in feeling like I could escape the blindness, but it never worked. Even when I felt like it did in the moment, it really didn't.I started focusing on the things that I can do. For example, the computer stuff. That one's a no-brainer. But then I got into sports, and now I strangely follow football at the NFL level. I'm into exercising, some cooking, etc. Just certain things that make me feel like I can do meaningful things in my life.Let me stop being so self-centered, now. I think you're describing something a lot of people who had even the slightest amount of vision go through. It's a complicated and frustrating situation to deal with. There are even times now when I absently think that my blindness is just a nuisance that I don't deserve. It quickly passes, but it's a pretty debilitating feeling. I've missed out on parties and friend gatherings because of it. It also has to do with how loud those functions can get, and eye contact is so important already, but especially when you lose the ability to effectively listen for things.Feel free to post out here whenever you feel. I wish I had been more upfront with my blindness-related issues when I was a bit younger. Coming out here, regardless whether folks know you personally on the forum or not, is an admirable thing to do.

I'd be interested to know how it goes. As far as I know, it's CLI-based, which I feel should probably make it a bit easier on the sighted help front since you could just look up valid commands and all the helper would be responsible for is reading console output.

@4, story of my life. I'm weak and give into tech releases like this. Plus, if it's a bust, I can always send them back. But, come on, that probably won't happen. @5, I vaguely remember some dropouts when I had my last pair of XM3's. That's unfortunate you're dealing with that. I know the XM4's are rocking BT5.0 (not 5.1 I don't think), but that's still a worthwhile upgrade.I'd be interested to know more about the WF1000XM3's, but that's slightly OT, so feel free to message me privately about your experiences with them. I had AirPods Pro some time ago, but they didn't stay in my ears. That was also before I knew about skins that go over them to help mitigate that problem, but I really don't want to drop another $250 on yet a pair of Apple earbuds.

It was a stupidly nit-picky thing, but I thought it was worth noting. BIOS has become somewhat of a more general term we attribute to the part of a computer that handles things like boot order, hardware interfacing, etc. BIOS is a specific iteration of this general boot system. UEFI (if I understand correctly) is the next-gen iteration of BIOS, targeting a more universal approach to hardware interfacing regardless of what OS sits on top of it.

Re: Accessible free online college websites for the blind

My advice depending on your intention is this:If you want to learn more about a particular programming language, Google and other resources are going to be the most effective and immediate solutions. I know quite a few people who have a decent programming background without having enrolled in a single college course. If you want to learn in a college environment where you have access to professors, tutors, etc, or you want to obtain a developer position with relative ease, go to college and graduate with a degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or some other related field. You will not get this for free, period. I say that not be harsh or deter you, but the reality is that quality, post-secondary education comes at a price, and a hefty one at that.I suspect the reason why you're getting a whole plethora of answers is because your intention doesn't seem to come across as clearly as folks would prefer, so it may be beneficial to describe exactly what you're looking for an why.

I'll also recommend the Sony WH1000XM3, although the XM4 is expected to release sometime this year, so it may be worth waiting for - if nothing else, you could get a pair of the XM3 for cheaper when that happens, although they regularly go on sale these days. The Bose NC 700 is also great, but I feel it's meant for travel-based usage rather than entertainment purposes (i.e.: sitting at home and enveloped in your own world). Bose has always been known for the grab-and-go appeal of their premium active-noise canceling headphones, so I'd make that distinction if you really want to spend that kind of money on headphones. The QC 35 II is great, but there are some rumors going around that Bose has throttled ANC performance through firmware updates. Though the NC 700 wasn't released as a replacement for or treated like it was "better" than the QC 35 II, I have encountered several forum posts, articles, and YouTube videos that have discussed this. I don't know the validity of such rumors, but thought I'd put it on your radar.

It mostly depends on budget. The Echo Dot 3rd gen is probably the best bang for your buck for reasons already described above. The bigger Echo and Echo Plus models don't do anything other than boost the volume by virtue of being bigger. The Echo Plus has an internal thermometer, so you can ask that particular model to tell you the temperature inside, but I'm fairly certain the audio internals of the Echo Plus 2nd gen is the same as the Echo 3rd gen.

Re: Recommended 2020 Laptops?

@jack, the one I purchased is this year's model, the 9500. To my knowledge, it does not follow the same scheme as previous models with the function and arrow keys for navigation.

Re: Recommended 2020 Laptops?

I initially got a Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, but switched to this year's XPS 15 model with maxed-out specs. These are pretty great laptops, and you don't need to spend any more than what your budget affords you to get something worth-while.I noticed on the XPS 13 2-in-1 I briefly had that in order to use the home and end keys, you had to press FN and F11/F12 respectively. I don't know if that can be changed. There are dedicated page-up and page-down keys, but not home and end - very frustrating.

@6, thanks for the recommendation. Just glancing at it, looks like they aren't hosting any images currently. Maybe joining the mailing list will be of use.

Re: Weekly Poll #1

I have a Checkers nearby, perhaps I'll give them a shot sometime this week. While on the subject of burger joints, there's a local place here that sells monster-sized burgers that everyone raves about. Their hours are a bit odd - 10:00AM-02:00PM -- not sure why they A) are only open for four hours and B) why those hours specifically, other than the obvious lunch rush which starts at around 11:00AM, but I suppose it's precisely because so many people pack into the restaurant with the line out the door they figure they only need to be open for such a short period of time. Also, has anyone tried the impossible burgers that have been on an upwards trend? I've tried them, and I wouldn't mind if if that was my only option on occasion, but as a person who isn't a vegetarian nor cares to be one, I still prefer real beef.

Re: Setting up Raspberry Pi

Practically speaking, I'd like to use it for dev purposes - coding, sandboxing, etc. Just something to play around with and test things. I can't see myself using it for productivity reasons in the MS Office sense.

Re: Weekly Poll #1

The fact McDonald's has the most votes really saddens me, but it's cheap and fits everyone's budget, so I can't say their burgers are beneath me.Five Guys is great, but comes at a much higher price than most other places. In fact, it's really about their fries and milkshakes along with the burger that makes it worth a trip every now and then.

Setting up Raspberry Pi

Setting up Raspberry Pi

I'm sure this is the billionth topic about this - so sorry.I'm deeply considering grabbing a Raspberry Pi 4, but would like to know what distro works best with screen reader access. I'm sure it depends on what people are using it for, so I guess the first distinction to be made is if there are GUI-based or CLI-based distros. Beyond that, what resources exist to help me set it up?Thanks!
