Fantasy book recommendations
Fantasy book recommendations Hi there.I'm looking for a fantasy book out there with violence, gore, and all that stuff. I like a good healthy bit of ass kicking. I read the entirety of the Sword of Truth series, the First Law series, and all of those books were plenty of what I enjoy. So anything in that vein as long as it has magic involved in it. Also, I already read Game of Thrones, so something different. Find me the most violent book out there. I wanna read some realistic scenes of old-time and wizardly combat. Thanks URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/622394/#p622394 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: what are your opinions about guide dogs?
Re: what are your opinions about guide dogs? Personally, I don't think I'd like a dog in my house. I've always been scared of them. While they're properly trained, I don't think I could trust a dog in particular. However, for those in the states who don't like dogs, there is an alternative. There are, as of this writing, trained miniature horses that will do the same job as dogs and live for quite a bit longer. There are advantages and disadvantages to choosing this option. But it is there for those who want an animal to guide them around obstacles and don't trust dogs to be the ones to make that happen. Re: What Hand Do You Read Braille With?
Re: What Hand Do You Read Braille With? You're supposed to read Braille with both hands. Your TVI's aren't bullshitting when they say you've got to do it. It really does help. Braille has been easier since I've done this all my life. In fact, I can't understand how it is a person could read Braille with only one hand, it's like typing through hunt and peck. It's unnatural to me, at least. I'd recommend the two-hands Braille reading style if anyone who is serious about using Braille for their reading wants to achieve fast reading speeds. Re: Looking for donations
Re: Looking for donations @9 Thank you for your offer. I really appreciate it. As much as I would appreciate the earbuds, I use headphones for extended periods of time, and ear buds hurt my ears after about 30 minutes or so. I know, I've attempted to use several different brands including Apple, but they haven't suited me well at all for what I am intending.@7 The actual price isn't $60. I'm only putting that goal up because Go Fund Me said to account for fees for using their service, plus any credit/debit fees. I wanted to make sure I had enough where I'd be able to pay whatever fees they charge, and buy the $41 pair of headphones that I found on Ebay. I did my very best to find the best deal for a quality pair of headphones and didn't want to ask for $100 or more for my goal because that'd be too much for anyone to donate, so that is why the goal is the way it is. @8 As to whether it's a trend or not, I'm unsure. I just figured it'd not be a bad thing to at least ask for what I'm intending to get. I have been trying to find a job and am looking very hard every day for them. However, most jobs that I applied for turned out to be MLM scams that give you the opportunity to earn more money but you have to find your own clients. Not an actual stable online job I can do from home that pays $10 and up per hour of work. The search continues. Also, no SSI because I'm not a citizen yet and still have to go through the process of becoming one legally, in the final steps now but for right now I've been flat broke for the past several months to a year at this point. Still in college though and I hope the degree will give me something concrete, after all, a piece of paper if I get it could help put me in an office for the rest of my life. Anyway, thanks for asking your questions, and I sincerely appreciate anything any of you could donate. i will close out the campaign once the goal is reached, and will not accept any money beyond what the goal is mainly because I figure that'd be scummy.Thanks. Re: Looking for donations Oh, thanks for the suggestion. I considered this option and concluded that while I wouldn't mind using it, I'd still love to charge my phone while using my wired headphones. Thus, I found I really need a pair of Bluetooth headphones for this reason, as I practice the listening of binorral beats at night and can't have my phone dying half way through a session.I really do appreciate the suggestion, however. Looking for donations
Looking for donations Dear all,Thanks for reading this post. As the subject states, I'm seeking donations. It's not a huge project I'm going for, just a small piece of equipment I really need right now and I figured I could come here in hopes of getting some donations started. The link is below.https://www.gofundme.com/f/steven-canto … are-flow-1I would be very grateful to anyone who wishes to spend their money on this. I know that this pandemic is difficult and recognize that this is not the most impactful issue that people have, but as I've stated it wouldn't hurt to at least put it out there. Hopefully. Thank you all very much for your feedback/assistance, and even perhaps criticism. I'm a big boy, I can take it. Take care, all, and here's hoping this will actually happen. I don't know what I should do if I want to boot back to Windows, because as much as I love this distribution, all of my stuff is on Windows currently, and I want to do things like play Clok without having to use Wine if it even works with the mush client. I've chosen my distribution!
I've chosen my distribution! Dear Linux users,After running many experimental distributions of Linux, (each of which I've run on a usb drive), I have chosen a distribution with which I am satisfied. The distribution is...Linux Mint Mate! Indeed, I have found that Linux Mint has been the least frustrating distribution to use, and that's including the fact that I tested out Genux, which isn't bad, but it's a pain in the ass to set up properly. Linux Mint has given me no trouble, and my edition has the Mate desktop which I find most accessible at the moment.Problem is, I have to figure out how to connect to the internet. Unlike other distributions that automatically pick up the Wifi stuff built-in to my computer, Linux Mint does not and so I mustmanually configure the wifi in order to connect. How do I do this? Hopefully someone will be able to explain it to me in a way I can actually understand, I'm no programmer and won't get all of the command line commands off the bat. Also, I am going to attempt to install the same voice used in Genux to this distribution, as I prefer it. Don't know how it's going to get done, but I do want to make it happen because Orka's voice currently sucks. So, there it is! Glad I found a distribution which I can use easily and effectively, and once I get all of the kinks out, I will consider duel booting it eventually so I don't have to connect a USB to my computer just to run Linux. Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. Re: Genux OS: My thoughts
Re: Genux OS: My thoughts Didn't understand those last few posts about installing packages and all that. I'm coming from almost no experience with command line or Linux, and almost no resources that I can find to actually learn how to work it. Not for lack of research, btw, it's just that the resources for how to do certain things with Linux are rather scarce imo. I even tried searching for training on command line in particular, no dice. I'd still love to run Genux, though. It seems like a well thought out OS. And thanks for that observation, Ironcross. Just because you bricked your computer doesn't mean I'll do the same, at least, that's my thought. It's a good thing I have a spare Panasonic Windows machine just in case I end up bricking it. The reason I'm thinking about running Genux is because it seems to me like it's very well built, and I don't have to deal with that damned gnome desktop. Hopefully. I've run Ubuntu, Ubuntu Bugi, Ubuntu Mate, (which I thought was elegant except for the damned Gnome desktop), Sonar, (which is being revived), and Accessible coconut. Just to give you some context. I'd love a tutorial on command line and how it actually works, I didn't grow up in a time when that was the main thing, so keep in mind I've actually got to learn it. Also, there are some great advantages with it such as it's much easier to install programs using command line on Linux rather than going through the GUI to do it. Anyway, enough rambling. Genux OS: My thoughts
Genux OS: My thoughts Dear all Linux users:Just wanted to give my thoughts of Genux OS. It's a good system. I enjoy using it. However, it seems like it sort of expects you to know what it's saying, and all of the more complicated things that are techincal. I know it's arch based, so I'm not at all surprised. Not something to deal with if you're a real beginner like myself. But I just wanted to experiment with it.For instance, in order to actually install the thing, you've got to be connected to the internet. I use wifi, and chose my network. I typed in my password, and there's no prompt at all saying it's connecting or it has been connected or anything, it's just all of this technical stuff I can't really understand, much less cut and paste for anyone to see here. But I don't mind, I'll just have to learn. It's fun, and the voice for the accessibility is way better than I expected. So, those are my thoughts, can't get passed the installation and I'm not sure I want to do it, because duel booting is kinda scary for me since I don't know how to switch back from Windows if I ever need to do it. I wish there was an accessible menue that gave you the option to switch back if you have multiple OS on your computer, like one option saying "Windows" and the other saying "Genux" and you'd have the option to know which one you're loading before you actually load it. That'd be awesome, but I know it'd be really hard to impossible to implement. What do you all think? Thanks URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/578617/#p578617 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: History of screen readers and speech synthesizers This is so very interesting.Thank you for all of this information. I just wanted to know what the history of screen reading software is, as well as the history of speech synthesizers. I saw a speech thing that was made in the late 1940's. Things have definitely improved since then when it comes to making speech, although admittedly even nowadays they still use some of the same principals they've used back in the 1980's. Like, instead of making actual words, they just combine sounds that simulate the same things, and the power of computers we've managed to make it sound as human as I think it's ever going to be. Re: In memorium, Terry goodkind
Re: In memorium, Terry goodkind It took me the better part of a year to read those books. It has been quite the experience. I understand what he was trying to do, and the fantasy world was brilliant. The TV series is a little bit not what I expected, (Richard is more aggressive in the TV series than in the actual book, even when holding the actual sword.) But It's all right. RIP Terry Goodkind. I may re-read his books again, once I get over the pure emotions that it took me to read the books once, it was far from easy after like the 6th or 7th book. I feel like Jagang is much more of r villain than the one in The Omen Machine to Warheart. ***Spoilers ahead***I love the magical system because of the way it deals with those who don't have magic, I mean, for there to be people out there who possess no gift at all, and for there to also be wizards, that is definitely a way to explain how the world works. Also, those with no gift, after having been freed by Richard, aren't developed in the plot as a curse to the magic system, in fact, they are made more powerful due to the fact they can't be directly affected by magic. Then again, that one Rahl character who thought he was untouchable definitely got what he deserved. I felt kinda bad for him because Richard just left him at the pillars of creation to die without breathing, that's a bad way to go for anyone. Sorry, I don't want to spoil more of the book. ***end of spoilers***Anyway, I could ramble on about the books, but this post is already too long. i may re-read them for the fact that the author died, but like I said, need to get over the emotions it left for me after reading. History of screen readers and speech synthesizers
History of screen readers and speech synthesizers Hi there.I wanted to know, is there a definitive article detailing the history of screen reading software, hardware, and speech synthesis? I've become very curious to know what it is we had before NVDA and JAWS. Could anyone point me towards a resource? I just want to read it for my own knowledge. I've been curious for years. I've attempted to look up some stuff, and I found this project some college person did, but that was not well researched and made quite a few assumptions on the viability of screen reading tech. The Wikkipedia article I found doesn't do much better, needing all these sorts of citations and stuff for their claims. So, I'd like to know, is there a book? Thanks so much. Re: Good PDF converter or reader? I'd recommend Kurzweil 1000. It's top of the line and very expensive, but if you're in the united states and get support from people who work with the blind, and you have a need for it, they might help you to get a license. hth URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/564254/#p564254 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
fixed my old computer for the first time
fixed my old computer for the first time Hi there.Today, I accomplished something. I fixed, what I thought was a doomed machine. I can't believe I managed to do it. Actually, Running Linux gave me the idea to do what I did by re-installing Windows from an external hard drive I had. Can't believe it actually worked. Having my old computer back is like having your old wand back after it's been broken for so many years. It's amazing not having a keyboard that is flimsy and has small keys made for kids. It feels awesome. Having a hell of a time with Ubuntu
Having a hell of a time with Ubuntu Hello. For anyone out there who is a Ubuntu use, I need help. So, I'm duel booting Ubuntu, and Windows. The problem with Ubuntu is that the sound will not play. I checked whether it is muted, checkedthe volumes, and I think it's the sound card that has the problem. It recognizes the sound card, (I found this out using the command line commands to check.) I even used the command line to try and force it to reload, but alas, no sound. When I plug in headphones, sound will play, but whether the screen reader is on or off, it will not talk. Also, with Windows, there is literally no problem so it can't mean my sound card is busted since it works just fine. What should I do? Thanks to anyone out there who can help me, I'd prefer using the command line to figure out some way to activate the sound card so that the sound will play on Ubuntu. I'm using the latest version, the latest lts. Re: Monthly chat February 2020 Hi there all,So, I've been in college for a while. I'm currently taking 4 classes with 1 lab and 1 recitation. It's interesting, but damn do I hate the late night classes.Other than that, I've been playing CLok when I have the time, honestly it's becoming a bit of a burn out for me since I play it every day. I've been playing Second Life when I'm not playing Clok, it's fun, but fishing is pretty much the only thing I can do, so we'll see. I go to the events sometimes. So, there we are. Re: Teens Are Not too Young for Depression
Re: Teens Are Not too Young for Depression I'll write up a post for each of the sections of the topic that I see. Firstly, as for technology, I think it's not good for 3 to 4 year old kids to have tech thrust upon them. And I'm no old fart either, I was born with some of the tech out there, I had a VCR, a Playstation, an Xbox, things like that. When I was a kid, we didn't have screen time, I had no limits on how much I could spend on my machines. As long as I wasn't loud, I could spend all night doing what I do. But I chose not to, as I knew that my body wouldn't like it. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in this context as kids no longer really have much self-control because we don't teach them to have self-control. If I did an experiment with a couple kids 'where I gave them a piece of candy and told them that they could either have it now, or that they could have it in an hour and they'd get much more for waiting, I'd know what the kids would do nowadays. And this is from my experience working with kids, and also teaching them religious instruction. In this modern age, we need to control how much they can be on their tech, (as much as I hate the idea because I didn't have it myself), because they can't control themselves and know that too much is too much. I learned early, but kids nowadays don't seem to be able to notice when they're tired or hungry, they just keep going about without a care in the world. As for teaching kids about sex and sexuality, I think that ages 3 to 4 or even until 8 are bad ages to teach kids about sex in particular. But they're going to see gay couples walking about, and they'll ask questions. I'm a religious man, but I'm not going to hide these things from kids who will ask questions because they can see it. I won't be telling them that it's either the right thing to do or the wrong thing, because I honestly don't know myself. How can I be a good Christian if I judge people solely based on what gender they love? True Christians don't say things like, "God hates fags." We don't really truly understand what God dislikes, and it surely isn't our place as humans to tell others what he doesn't like. I would simply tell my kids that men can love men, and women can love women. At age 11 or 12, that's when sex should be talked about in full, although I learned at 9 years old. I knew what condoms were at the time, I knew what sex with a girl was scientifically. I think kids should learn it early enough, but not so early that it brings them to obsessing over it. This is why virginity and losing it is considered a big deal, because we make it taboo and something wrong. If parents don't make it a huge deal, then kids won't have the need to want to lose it at young ages because they know that it's something that comes when you actually love a person, not just when you'll want to have sex. This plays hand in hand with not making masturbation a big deal either, at least they'll have an outlet to fulfill their urges without having to resort to women, although because Porn is for those who are 18 and older, it shouldn't be watched by minors. Such is illegal. These are my thoughts. Re: Do People Want an All Things Blindness Forum I'm testing out distopia, an accessible reddit application for IPhone. I'd have to say, it wouldn't be that bad to have an all things blindness forum. However, with that said, the r/blind subreddit isn't very active, so I doubt the forum might be as active as you might imagine. I'm sorry, it wouldn't be a bad idea on paper, but because this forum is so large already and so heavily known, I doubt there's any way your forum'll compete if we're looking at numbers. Re: astral projection can a blind person do it?
Re: astral projection can a blind person do it? Look, I like to think Astral Projection could be an actual thing, with some limits. I'm not precisely sure how a blind person could do this without deep concentration and practice; it might be easy for sighted individuals who can have a frame of reference. In particular, reading part I of Phase, looking into a mirror isn't going to happen without us knowing what our reflection would look like. Having no sight at all, this would be difficult. Not that it couldn't happen, but looking into a mirror probably shouldn't be the first thing you try for a completely blind person, perhaps something a bit more, sensory. To us, or me, in particular, sight is a mere conceptual idea. Nothing more. I can't at all understand what sight is or how it works; all I know is that I don't have it and therefore it is useless to me. @Ethan, I can see where you are coming from. Science shouldn't be outright not taken into consideration. I like to think that what we have now could be considered reality and all that. Otherwise I'd be insane. At the same time, however, in my mind, there's got to be something else out there. Maybe a consciousness, maybe something completely different that can't necessarily be proved by a bunch of numbers and some cranky old men sitting at office chairs all day. Even if in the scientific idea Astral Projection/Phase/whatever isn't real, I'd like to think that there's something out there that could give me a positive experience and could actually help me in my actual real life. Whether it's god, or astral projection or something else, I'm going to find it; I'm going to go searching for whatever it is that'll keep my life balanced. I'm not saying you're wrong for putting you're actual theories out there, and putting you're actual scientific stuff out there, but I'd also suggest that you should try it with the intent to experience something that you may not have thought possible before. For all you know, you could be missing out because you're stuck in the scientific bubble of logic, numbers, graphs, and charts. Or not, maybe science is enough to keep you're life grounded in the knowledge that what's out there is what's out there and nothing changes. Just saying. Re: Computer MIDI Keyboard!
Re: Computer MIDI Keyboard! I'd buy this, for sure. Reaper, in my opinion, is much too difficult to set up. You know it's bad when you spend 6 hours trying to set up the stuff just for Midi and it doesn't work. The onscreen keyboard sucks so hard. And overall, it's just too much for what you're getting. On the other hand, Computer Midi Keyboard is a simple program with some good features. Now, is there a way to create files after you type in the notes, I hope so. I'd definitely buy it then. I don't see the hatred for this sort of thing, he's providing a service that doesn't exist, or takes quite a bit of tinkering just to get even the most basic of functions to work correctly. $15, in my opinion, is well worth it for the easier time I'm going to have making music than I ever did with Reaper and Muse Score. Hopefully it will work with Virtual Instruments and such, not just the Midi piano that comes with Microsoft. And some of us can't afford $300 or $400 keyboards just for tinkering with music. And I'd rather not get a piece of hardware that isn't guaranteed to work with my current setup, Midi controllers, if you want the good ones, (and it's very likely you'll need a good one to get something) can cost quite a bit of money. A $15 one has got to have quite the limited amount of features. Just my thoughts. Resources for Wiccans and Pagans
Resources for Wiccans and Pagans Disclaimer: I am not in either one of those groups of people. I, however, do not either encourage nor discourage the practices therein. I merely give the resources for those aspiring. So, on with my post. Apparently, there's an online school for people seeking to learn anything from crystal magic to the book of shadows, to divination, and anything in between. I know that we have a fairly large blind community of Pagans and related persons, so this may be useful to the persons stated above.
