No. They won't abandone their own voice, but the Vocalizer voices in some regions that have in-house voices have a good chance of being abandoned. Apple hasn't even updated their Vocalizer library in years, because we're missing Nathan and Malcum. The only new premium vocalizer voices I actually quite like.

Re: Eloquence on Braille Note Touch Plus, is it possible?

An interim undertaking could be making an arm distribution for android out of the dectalk source code that was released a while back, but apart from a few people working on homegrown speech synthesis in their spare time, there really isn't a large community interest surrounding that. And when you're talking c-code, you kind of need that if it means a code conversion. It would be far from the dectalk we all know and love since the code for that was never found, but it would be pretty much Mobile Speak resemblence on a droid. Counts for something.

Apple appears to be taking a different avenue altogether. Even if they aren't going in-house they're probably going through a different spinoff research firm, given the Apple's machine learning made it into an offline chipset. Google's probably could considering they are gradually scaling down to make the resources a little less overkill, but they're a long way off from, say, packaging it all as a thunderbolt-driven hardware speech synthesizer. As such, Apple's machine learning for the Nora voice is menial at best.

Re: Eloquence on Braille Note Touch Plus, is it possible?

@23The default for an open source project without a license is that no one can use it for anything.  It's not default open, it's default closed.  Knowing this is the hello world of I googled the basics of software copyright for 2 minutes.  You have to pick a license, you have to understand the implication of the license you picked, and once you have other contributors to the project you can't ever change that license unless you had contributor license agreements signed by all parties. These laws and ideas you want us to disregard because it's free are why NVDA will never be bundled with Windows itself, and why Microsoft has to maintain narrator.  NVDA is also a good example of getting it right, though, because understanding software IP laws is what prevented Freedom Scientific or someone from taking everything they've done, putting it in Jaws, and getting tons of work for free. But screw this up and you can never sell your game (because if you, for example, bring in GPL code you can't keep it closed source).  Screw this up and you can't get your software into commercial products even if you're popular enough that someone wants to.  Screw this up if you're doing a library and no one can use your library.  You can decide to not care, but that's unethical even disregarding the laws as it disregards the wishes of the person who put their time into it, probably for free.  But more to the point disregarding it only works as long as you're so tiny that no one will ever care, and it will ensure that no one can ever care, either.@24Nuance is long-term dead, unless Google licenses their patents.  I understand some of Google's work, and some of their papers would factor into my very long-term plan of implementing a new Eloquence.  At this point, Google is likely only able to do what they do because of the TPU, a custom chip for machine learning that makes GPUs look like vacuum tubes and punch cards, which no other company has access to without buying machine learning from Google. My guess isn't Apple goes in house. My guess is, as ironic as it is, Apple licenses from Google.  Barring some small startups and universities, Google is the only company doing interesting things with machine learning at the moment.  But we'll see what happens.

I'm curious about something though. Given monopolies are illigal and nuance was one for a long time, given it barely had any competition, shouldn't they be sued or something for monopolizing?

@NevEd: Should have, indeed. It's a general lack of technical competence at a legislative level that has saved Nuance's ass so far, since all the antiturst investigations I'm aware of were flubbed. Plus, up until a few years ago, they've had the advntage of almost no competition in the text to speech/automatic speech recognition market. Google/Amazon haven't exactly destroyed Nuance, but they have certainly stifled Nuance's ability to innovate much further.

Re: Eloquence on Braille Note Touch Plus, is it possible?

@NevEd: you really need to research Nuance's history to understand the whole of it. This isn't a matter of things were open source and got sold - in fact, gpl is legally binding, so a gpl violation is no joke. That isn't to say a software patent can't come for your head, but you do at least have some leverage in that department. The fact of the matter is that these were actually well-established companies (Royal Philips Electronics, BeVocal, Loquendo, SVox, L, Eloquent Technologies, you name it). All the companies they have acquired through shady manipulation. The literal only reason why Nuance has not taken over the tts market entirely is because they have Google and Amazon/Ivona as actual legitimate competition. They might even risk losing a foothold or two in some first world markets if Apple manages to in-house major languages, which they are slowly but surely working on doing. IT doesn't make Nuance any less of a thieving conglomerate, they're just no longer center stage because Google has tens times the amount of compute power that even Nuance could think of having to generate frighteningly realistic speech. That is literally it.

I don't understand why an open source project might become an issue if you're popular, or become more popular. Just don't allow it to be sold. Period. If someone sells something without your permission, sue the person selling it, not the guy who made the program. If parties are going to actively not support a piece of software that people do use, and not for nothing, and hoard the code because "muh money muh money," they're just being brats. And if its made open source, that's it.Its stupid, stingy corporate shit and it annoys me. Because people out there abuse broken systems all the time and because we're common folk that get screwed by the rich and powerful with money to buy themselves out of anything, we have no say in anything. Re: Eloquence on Braille Note Touch Plus, is it possible?

@20It's not as bad as all that, if you plan for the ability to open source.  It's not as much red tape as you'd think either in the common case.  And, what most people don't realize is that all of this "red tape" applies to your open source and/or personal project too, and is just sitting out there waiting to bite you as soon as you get a little bit popular for not knowing how it works.I wish this forum would have less disdain overall for bothering to understand software licensing issues, especially the programmer subset.  It's not that hard, it's important, and "I don't care" is only a useful answer to that question for a very short period of time when you're first learning.@21Well yes and no.  Android definitely pushes things in favor of having source somewhere, though, now that you've pointed it out.

Re: Eloquence on Braille Note Touch Plus, is it possible?

@camlorn; They had to have had the source code to do the Android port, unless of course they had a compiled arm linux-embedded sdk already. The only still maintained Eloquence for Linux is Voxin, and even that was never made for Arm because it was based off of the Wizard Software Viavoice distribution. Either way, they're freaking Nuance. After acquiring numerous speech companies through pretty shady hostile takeover tactics that nearly put them under antitrust investigation, the last thing they are going to do is let go of something they own. It takes a lot of resources to actively support it, but they can hold on to the trademark for all its worth.

@17 @18You can't just port old 32 bit C code to 64 bit, assuming that the old C code exists.  It's quite possible that no one even has the source code to eloquence anymore, and that it doesn't even compile on modern compilers.I wish Nuance would just let it go, but everyone always forgets that it actually takes *significant* resources for them to support it if they decided to support it.  My guess is that there's patents involved and that even if they decided they wanted to open source it, they're not in the legal position to do so without opening themselves up to other problems.  It's not just some big switch labeled "open source on/off" or something; taking an already existing product from 20 years ago that you probably don't even have the developers for starts at months of lawyers and a really big code review at minimum.

Accapella, however, sucks so hard that it can say about 0 percent of the made up words, and it can't say Anastacia. If I have the option of using a voice that can't say Anastacia, I'm not using it. It can't even say booss, it says:Boe oss.I don't even know why Humanware bothered with Crappapella, even something like Keynote Gold from the Apex would've been better. Though it can't pronounce some Manamon names, at least it can say Anastacia, booss, coollege (that's how it's spelled in the books), Javoltrik, Volanteril, Sirenea, Kangachan, I could go on and on forever.

Re: Eloquence on Braille Note Touch Plus, is it possible?

So apparently Eloquence is no longer supported by anyone which is why it was removed from the play store. Yes you can get an APK, but Google being stupid made it so that you can't make android install apps that aren't from the play store unless you allow certain apps to do so, and humanware's file manager isn't one of those apps you can allow. You can't just choose an app, I guess Google has some sort of pre-approval process, bloody stupid if you ask me. But as far as doing it on the touch plus, I had to copy the APK to google drive first, using my polaris sense that was what  I was using before I upgraded, then open it from there. And honestly sense all licenses for eloquence are considered null and void I would say getting this isn't considered piracy as you can't even buy it anyway. Although in the future it won't be possible to run eloquence because if the roomers are correct Google might be going the way apple went and disable 32 bit apps. It'll be interesting to see what Freedom Scientific does with jaws now that it's not possible for a company to get eloquence. HIMS was ahead of the game by 3 years, as the polaris didn't get eloquence, it has vocalizer which in my opinion sucked because I'm honestly not a fan of realistic voices like that unless I'm trying to make a tts skit, because eloquence and e-speak are light weight, and easy to understand at fast speeds. I don't need human like speech to browse the web. Maybe for reading something like a book or whatever, but the whole point of fast speech isn't to be realistic, it's to be able to keep up with the sighted world.

It is around, just not on the play store.  I'm not normally for getting a paid product for free, especially when I have the money to buy it, and I actually bought Eloquence off the Playstore when it was still on there, but code factory basically did that to themselves by removing it from the play store.  I won't give a link here as I don't want to get a warning, but it shouldn't be that hard to find.

you can if you get it cracked.  I mean, with codefactory removing elequence from the playstore... they've lost all their rights  to it; in my opinion, that,  not to mention... a bunch of userswasted money, given one cannot ask for a refund. @1 yes, its still around,  just not on the playstore. Or if you have an old braillenote with elequence, there might be a way to tranfer it; or... I really don't know. That was a bad move from codefactory to remove eloquence from the playstore, but oh well.

Eloquence on Braille Note Touch Plus, is it possible?

I just recieved the Braille Note Touch Plus, and heard that you could buy Eloquence from the play store. I went to the play store and searched Eloquence text to speech, but only found vocalizer. Is it still possible to buy eloquence? And if so, how do you do it? I've never used other Braille Notes before, so I'm very new to this. I checked the Text to speech settings in options, and Eloquence wasn't an option.

Only unfortunate thing is that the performance speed will no doubt be increased with more space, but I believe the card reader itself has a set file read/write speed, unfortunately. But the fact that you can copy files in the background makes up for that.

Re: Braille Note Touch

hi jack, yes, it certonly will modify the partition records. agreed, though, that is exactly what we want, again my example with in windows is that. after cloanings done.all we do is then resize those partitions acordingly. example. 128 gig SD card, wil have its existing partitions. weather it being 1 2 3 or 4, all we thus do is, 1, increase user storage space. so, if it was 16 gig, we now extend it to, say, 50 gig, or how ever big you wish to do so. and in theory, this should give a nice bang to the tablets performance.and with out even tuching the original virgin card.makes me wish i had a little tablet like that to play with, nice nice!

Re: Braille Note Touch

Even if you could, ANdroid's midi implementation is pretty primitive at best, which is why there are more music creation apps on ios than there are on Android. Flyby Chow, regarding the sd card, what you describe is doable, but is certainly not as easy as, dd the contents of the card into an image, format new sd card under ext4, copy disk onto new card. You could probably get better read/write speed right off the bat, especially if using a sandisk xtreme, however, getting more space will require a little more work. No matter how big the card is, the filesystem is only as big as the partitions. So by dd-ing the card and then putting that cloned disk onto a new card, you're essentially still giving yourself a 16gb set of 9 partitions, just like your older card. So you'll have to do a bit more resizing and make some changes to the partition table to actually get more speed. What I do know is that this a standard off-the-shelf sandisk classic sdhc card they're usin
g, and with a Sandisk Xtreme, the read/write speed would be doubled at the very least.

ok, i have a question, i am asking it out of a windows perspective, just interpret it from a linux point of view, since i am not linux savi.why cant you simply. 1.. connect sd card to linux live cd,since linux can reed ext 4 natively,2. clone the sd card to a larger one. and 3.take that larger sd card, that has faster reed /rite speeds, and put it in the device, to see if it can boot?this way your original is safe?i am super curious to see if it wil work. if so? boom, faster performance rite out of the bat.see, that is exactly what i did with my lenovo x260 laptop.its original slow hardrive may not be tuched, since its the warranty of the laptop. so, i simply cloaned it on to a larger SSD. took hardrive out of laptop.put ssd, in laptop. and boom. faster performance, put hardrive in a safe. and my warranty is safe.makes me itchy to know if running a larger S D card on that note taker will healed better results?can a

The cool thing would be to see if you can get the shutter button to Keyrec. Although, that may be an actual custom button. Doesn't work with Knfb yet which is what I think they'll fix in a firmware update that includes Knfb for free.

The BNTouch, based on the fact it doesn't even vibrate without a card, I suspect even the base bootloader is stored on the SD card. the OMAP4 board bit bangs the SD as a generic block device until it's l

Re: Braille Note Touch

Yes, it is. It's like the terminal emulato rapp that comes with some custom rom.s Also, you have the system patrition, data, cache, and a recovery partition. Four partitions. This is on with it on the mac. The stuff inside data looks like it's hidden but that's probably finder just being finder. It shouldn't be hidden. But the system apps are visible, so you can see all the apps. Even mainmenu is an app, because remember, Android is modular, so everything's an app. Keysoft being a modified Talkback package at the heart isn't necessarily a bad thing. For the record, Touchbraille goes way beyond the accessibility api, so does first letter navigation in lists. The thing with an already existing screen reader that is pretty solid on Android itself, is that it can be built on pretty easily, and even more so when you have Google collaborating.

Re: Braille Note Touch

What they meant is you can't put the internal operating system sd card into your pc and use it with like Microsoft Word and such. I e, you can't use it as just any old sd card. If you insert the internal card, you get 4 partitions, those are the partitions used by the system. So what they mean is that no, you can't just pop it in your computer. But if you have mac or linux, you can. You can, however, use any external sd card. They say only up to 32gb, but my 64 gb works just fine, and i'm sure a 128gb would too. And the operating system performance is actually pretty good. Keep in mind some tablets used the removable sd card as well and worked just fine.

Re: Braille Note Touch

There is no *internal flash disk.* That flash disk is, the sd card. And if you have a pc, the short answer is no. Actually there is an etx4 driver you can install for windows, though I can't speak to that since I haven't tried that on the windows side. Would suggest staying away from that for now. ON the mac side however, I can confirm that the sd card does indeed mount successfully, and I do have full read-write access to the card, thanks to Paragon's ext4 driver which I may decide to buy, who knows. Don't have the linux install handy all the time, so the driver may become useful. So, if you have a mac, get paragon ext4. I'd say get fuse but based on the comments on that thing it seems like that's had more bugs. From the guys who gave you ntfs for mac, I'd go with their ext4 driver even though it's paid.

Re: Braille Note Touch

I think Humanware must assume that the general population of its users are using windows, hence the sd card warning. Let's carefully look at the wording here and break this down. Do not tamper with the internal sd card, well yeah, that's obvious. Or use it in a *pc* as this may cause irreparable damage to your Touch. While it is true that the Touch absolutely does not start at all, or even so much as vibrate, when there is no sd card inside, let's take note that they did say, pc. Nowhere in there did they mention Linux or Mac! So as Finn Turner said, the sd card is ext4, which obviously is not recognized by Windows. But any Linux system would work, even a live cd for that matter? And Fuse for the mac should give us read access to the card. Meh, I should probably just use the whole card in Linux, but then again it depends on what I wanna do with the card. I e, do I perform just a regular system backup, or do I copy files to it? Answer the os question that way.

Re: Braille Note Touch

If everything is stored on a single card, it might make for some interesting things. Keep in mind that I am not a programmer or an expert, so the following may not be completely accurate. I'm assuming that Humanware partitioned the card with the standard Android partitions. There's probably one for data for apps, the internal SD card which takes up the bulk of the user storage, the system partition that holds all default software and special braille configuration, and probably some cache partitions. I'm assuming performing a factory restore clears everything except the system partition. Humanware must solely control that area of the disk when performing updates. I guess it should be possible to create a full image with the appropriate software and make it bootable on other devices. It's not something I would try, but it does make me wonder. This is assuming that absolutely everything runs off this card. This might not be as bad as I thought. From all this, I
39;m assuming it would be trivial for Humanware to send you a new card with the system firmware on it.

Re: Braille Note Touch

Hmmm. all this talk about the filesystem of the braillenote does bring up some interesting questions. After all, could we have a 32 gig braille note touch instead of a 16 gig moddle? What all can you do to it that humanware does not think about? So they do not offer a full system backup within the boot menu? I know that On my IPhone, I can enter sort of restore mode if the OS update ever fells. This and the fact that I can restore it via ITunes and have it up going is a plus. I thought that android devices had such a mode if the OS got messed up to the point where it would need to be fully wiped and install. So what happens if an OS update makes the OS of the BrailleNote unbootable? Will humanware send out a new card?

Re: Braille Note Touch

Alright, cool. So you said the mac may have an ext4 driver. It doesn't, but Osx Fuse is a third party utility that provides that support. In that case, would I just be able to insert the card in the mac, or would there be some safety precautions to take to make sure the card doesn't get fried? However, it looks like Fuse only supports reading ext4 volumes, and while you can enable the experimental write support, writing to the drive could result in toasting the data, which would toast the Touch's only method of storage. Thus, it looks like I'd be better off doing it on a Linux installation. But assuming the card works as expected, the mac would do the bare minimum, that is perform a full system backup which they should've provided as an option in the boot menu of the Touch. This also leads to another thing. Having a knowledge of Linux/unix based filesystems, I asked tech support if you could format any card under the Touch's filesystem and copy a syst
em backup of keysoft over to it. They said no, that inserting the card into the pc would result in the card getting formatted. That's ok, after all I don't think I mentioned Linux in that support question. But since the filesystem is ext4, and the card *should* work in a linux/mac installation, that means that you could technically use any card with the device!

Re: Braille Note Touch

Finnturner, that's what I thought. Question is, would it work on a mac system as well, being unix based? And as for the old version of Android, that's something I'm dealing with personally. Security patches will still come in for Kitkat. Google is not Microsoft, they don't toss old operating systems, if they did well then would you still see every single version of android is the sdk? Probably not. That's why a lot of common apps still work on Kitkat. Responsible android developers will test the app on many versions of Android and many different configurations if they can, because, for the record, there are still *some* devices around that are still running outdated versions of Android. If Google themselves thought that Kitkat was a bad idea, they would've made it clear to Humanware that it would be. Kitkat is still a very stable platform to build on. Cyanogen Mod was at its peak in Kitkat, especially with features. Now it seems like just added fluff
apart from a few nice features that I still find value in.
