This is so sad to hear and at such a young age too. I collaborated with him on several of the trivia files, especially the LOTR and a couple others and he was always a pleasure to work with. I am sorry to hear of this and will send my prayers and best wishes to the family. Also with hopes someone keeps his website up and running for those who may wish to try his games.

I loved the fact that he managed to fit the simpsons into his games Im a huge simpsons fan so I always got a good laugh out of that lol. He will be missed he was one of the first audio game developers as far as I can tell.

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

Hello everyone,I just read the news and it was just shocking me! Sure, we have developers who abandon their games due to a couple of understandable facts and reasons I dont want to include here, but it is really sad to hear that a developer passes away. And I am happy that everybody who posted here will support Jims family and his productions.Jims games were one of the first English games I played. I started with the self-voicing games, such as Mach1, Golf and Pong in 2005, because they contained a pretty simple English, not too hard to understand, since my English at this time was not the best.In 2007, I started playing his SAPI5 games and I have been in touch with him via E-Mail in 2010, asking whether it is possible to translate his games into other languages, such as German. He didnt accept my proposal, because it would have been way to compl
icated doing that, due to the fact that he would have to completely change the source code and the text sapi would have had to speak.Anyway, his games really helped me learning English, since I started learning English by playing audiogames. Many games of different developers were the actual main reason for me, learning English in first place, so I could play games which contain more experienced English, with longer texts, cutsceens, etc. This does work, because if you know what the game is about, you will easily understand words, such as to colide, if you, for instance, have a learn game sounds option in the menu which explains the sounds played. That might have been no good example, but I think you got my point anyway. Now, as you can see, my English is very experienced, I speak very fluent and I got myself an accent which suits me the best, in order to get rid of that horrible German accent of mine! Now, I have a lot of friends scattered all over the place after attending the ICC-Camp with success, I am able to communicate with people who cant speak my language, just because I spent too much time at the computer playing audiogames! Thanks very much to you, Jim, for giving me that kind of kickstart in understanding and getting more experienced in English! I will definitely keep you in my mind!

At that time I had the curiosity to look at that great persons life, works and contributions to the blind community. Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

When I heard about this yesterday, I was very surprised. While I have never spoken to Jim personally, I have interacted with him in public discussions on Audyssey. He always had something constructive to say and I found his Email signatures very amusing. As many here, I have a lot of time and good memories of his games, they were one of the first I tried around 2007, back when I was using a Polish voice to play the trucker game. The way it pronounced the word hours, made it sound something like horse and I found it very confusing that the game was telling me to wait 2 horses. I played pretty much all of his games a lot. He left quite the legacy and I think it will live on. Lastly, it makes me so happy to see the entire community in solidarity like this, yes, we have our differences, heated arguments, but its good to know when such a tragedy happens we can work together.

Still, Im not sure I would have known about this had I not got here. When I saw this on the foru, I was, like, oh my God, is this really true? The more I read it, the more I came to realise that this was no lie.I, like most of you who posted about this already, have played many of his amusing games on my computers for several hours, and I even spoke to him via e-mail on Audyssey in May of 2010.Being a musician, I am always on the lookout for funeral marches, poems written into songs, and anything to sum up the emotions that one would go hough in a unified language.James H. Kitchen, Junior, I thank you for all the work you have done, all of the accomplishments you hav

@Slj, sinse Jims games were free anyway there would be no problem with redistribution, remember the only nono as far as this forum goes is trying to assist people in getting commercial games without paying. That being said I think your probably the fifth or sixth or seventh person Ive heard mention redistribution and hosting the games so that future gamers will be able to enjoy them. Both Aprone and Tom have said they will, indeed theyre probably in a boxing ring somewhere right now duking it out for the privilidge of doing so . Seriously so many people have had so much respect for everything Jim has done, its more likely Jims games will be hosted everywhere than not available anywhere .As soon as a perminant home is found for t
he games Ill be very glad to update the db.This is however why I gave Pitermachs earlier comment a thumbs up, sinse peoples united feelings on this and the willingness to help of so many people is quite humbling.

With my debit card on the fritz, I might be too late for a donation, but I could also host the games on my server as well, its a free cwahi host. Well, that is, if I can rangle them enough to give me a password reset without solving the captcha haha. But this service will be free and as long as I keep it active its all good. No space limitations, no bandwidth limitations, so once its up people can start downloading away. It will be a huge in game size but maybe not so huge in filesize, package of all his games, please note this will include all the adult games as well the package is unfiltered for the sake of having it all available perminantly, and the dos programs and windows selfvoicing programs can go separately as those dont use the winkit. Any games that use winkit go in the package. Another idea, all of Kitchens dos programs can go into future talking dosbox releases!

Haha, Dark is right, Jims games are going to end up immortalized on 40 websites by the time the dust settles! I had grabbed my own copy of Jims website yesterday, shortly after I tried spreading the news to the people playing Swamp. If Id have thought to tell everyone Id done it, it might have prevented a little bit of the confusion, but oh well. For the moment I am just using an exact copy of his site, though Ill probably edit it later to remove his email and to explain that the site contains the work of the late Jim Kitchen, and not my own work.http://kitchen.kaldobsky.com

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

Well, I have some good news, as far as Jims dos games. If youre running Windows 10, you can run dos programs natively. I tested it out with the games from the talking dos box folder. Why Microsoft decided to add the support back for dos apps, Ill never know. If I had a credit card, Id be glad to donate to his family. Jim was a great dev, as well as a great comedian, at heart. He was always cracking jokes. Even his games have a part of his humorous personality in them. That football game, which even in the DOS version, had some pretty funny jokes, made my cousin think I was playing the Mainstream NFL Madden game with my screen reader! I hope people will make games in the style that Jim did. If possible, Id like to see his games ported over to the mac, so later generations can play the games that this great, humorous, talented, and generally well rounded man has created.

The date for his memorial has not yet been set (according to the funeral home website), but when it is I am more than willing to send a flower arrangement on behalf of the audiogames.net community. I did not personally know Jim so I dont want to step on the toes of anyone else who wanted to do this. If no one else comes forward, wanting this responsibility, then I will gladly handle it.On the Audyssey list I have offered my help in sorting out Jims computer and software situation. I hear that his family would like someone nearby to help them with it, and I live 3 hours away from there. If they decide they want my assistance, I think I can help since I have a lot of experience with the programming language he used for his games.

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

I was shocked to read that Jim Kitchen has passed away. Hell bee missed for sure in the blind community world wide...Ive always been fashinated of his small quite random but cool games, and I always found it cool that people didnt heard from him for very long time, and then suddenly, he has made a new small game. I think Ill download all the games in case the website will be shut down.I didnt got the reason for his early death?I think many people world wide wanna send some flowers or donate some money. I mean, it would be pretty random if people Jim even didnt knew started to send random flowers, because people properly only knew Jim because of his games. So maybe audiogames.net in any ways could set up a donating page, use Paypal or something simular, and we could donate what we want and all the money could be send as one pa
ckage from the audiogames forum? What do you think about this, and would this even be the way to do it in the US? I mean, it might be done differently in the various countries...

From Jim KitchenMay22 , 2015 I started teaching myself the Basic programming language in 1980 on a Texas Instruments 99 4A- home computer. Next on an Atari 800 XL home computer, then an IBM PC Junior. I mostly wrote games with some simple graphics. By December of 1989 I no longer had any sight. I bought an N E C 286 running Jaws for dos version 1 with an Accent SA synthesizer. In January 1990 I was at the Cleveland Sight Center learning braille etc. So I wrote my braille reference guide program at that time. I was now programming in Quick Basic 4.5 which wrote directly to the screen, so the games were only accessible via Jaws for dos script files. Those games were on the Henter Joyce BBS in like 1991. Then I was told how to make Quick Basic 4.5 write to the bios and that made the games accessible for all dos screen readers, so I up loaded the games to the BBS PC Ohio, which was part of the planet connect system.
p; So the games got distributed to BBSs all over the world. That was probably in 1992 or 3. Then Phil Vlasak showed me how to shell out and use an external program to play sound files. So now we added sounds to the dos games. Well they had the little beeps etc from the little PC speaker before that, but now we were playing actual sound files in the games. In 2000 David Greenwood got me started with Visual Basic. Trucker was the first game that I converted from dos to Windows. It put temporarily highlighted text on the screen. Really only worked with Jaws. Also used something simple to play a sound file. I next wrote games such as Mach 1, golf and casino using recorded synthesized speech and TegoSoft to play the sound files. In 2003 I started the winkit.zip thing with the game menu system using the sapi5 text to speech engine instead of recorded speech. About that time Allen Maynard shared some DirectX code with
me which gave me even more features when playing sound files. Dan Zingaro shared code with me that told where at in the sound file you pressed a key. That was for the golf and baseball games. When the BBSs were replaced by the Internet David Poehlman put my games on his web site. Later I learned how to write my own web site from OSCAR SOSAs home page program. Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

I admit this one shocked me too, both because it was so unexpected and because Jim was hardly at the end of his life. Jims games were certainly some of the first I ever played, indeed the fact I had so much fun with them back in 2005 even though I couldnt get any sapi voices other than Sam to work was astounding. Ive introduced them to friends and to my parents, and as Slj said, the fact that the games play so much like board games is astounding and makes for some great times together, as well as some of Jims really fun solo arcade titles such as Pong, Golf and the amazing Awesome Homer. I did not speak to Jim in person at any point, but I corresponded with him both privately and on the audeasy list quite frequently and always remember his humour and his understanding, in particular on a personal level I always liked the way that though he made adult games, he was always understanding of the fact that my genophobia precluded me from playing suc
h, despite the amount of fun I had with so many of his other titles.I even wrote a couple of golf courses in my time, and indeed will now see about finishing a project Ive had in the works for a while, a Doctor Who question set for his trivia game.As to his games, with the amount of people around the world who have downloaded them, the many friends and well wishers he made and the great reputation for being quirky and fun Jims work always had, I doubt theyll be lost any time soon. In particular I hope Cindy and the rest of Jims family are okay. Id love to send flowers or a tribute, but being in the wrong country thats a little hard, still I will try and write something appropriate for the news at least.

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

I heard of this earlier today, I havent known him personally, and thats regretable, and the loss will be felt across all of us, for all the games we enjoyed of his creations, back through 20 years. He will be missed, and remembered, if not worldwide, then by us. The obituary I read didnt state a cause of death, 58 isnt really that old these days, some of my family are in their 80s and I have a grandmother of 93 years.

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

A friend posted the news up on his Facebook, and thats how I found out. I too am quite surprised. Id only exchanged emails with him a couple times, but he seemed like a descent fellow. His DOS games were the first games Id played after losing my sight in the late 80s, and baseball was always my favorite, though I enjoyed several of his other games too. He will be sorely missed by the community, and hopefully somebody can arrange to make his games live on. Good luck on the next journey of your life, Jim.

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

[[wow]]. thats really sad, and quite shocking too. Jims were some of the first games I played, -- trucker being the one I got the most addicted to but was never able to properly beat. . Anyways Ive only exchanged 2 emails with him, and that was about 3 years ago... but still its quite sad that hes gone. RIP Jim, you will be missed.

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

The ironic thing is Id just beaten Dungeon Master before I opened my Email and got the news. Id asked him a while back if it would be possible to add the ability to add new women into the pool that the game picks from. That way you could design girls who were close to the type you might look for in real life. Theyd still use the existing scenarios but the game would just have more options for what girl to put in what scenario. I dont think Jim quite realized what I was getting at though because he apparently thought I meant adding all new items or taking existing ones into different locations or something.

Re: Jim Kitchen passed away

This is shocking. Fifty-eight is definitely not that old and Im sorry to hear of his passing. I played a fair few games by him and am very impressed, he was a talented longtime developer who, while he may not still physically be with us, his games and his contribution to the community will live on for years to come.
