@Hijacker: Paying subscriber to audioblocks on and off for a few years now, and An Idiot is correct on that front. The sounds that you download are yours to keep and use, for literally ever. That said, there are quite obviously measures in place to prevent hording/bulk downloading and the like, i.e, just because sounds are yours to keep forever does not mean they aren't gonna notice if you program a bot to constantly scrape the page and download everything under the sun afterwhich you happily cancel your subscription. You however have nothing to worry about if you're downloading a set of sounds and music for a game, they're talking bulk downloads in massive quantities here that are likely automated is what would be against the license.No. Sound subscription is a new model and it benefits you, the creator, in a way you may not realize yet. And if you want to know how I know that you're free to use those sounds forever in your projects, well, you have your reassurance that they will go to bat for you if you get a false positive copyright claim fom Youtube, even if you ahve canceled your subscription. Once a customer, always a customer.

OK, so first of all, its not hard to distinguish sounds from each other nowadays. Have you ever heard of Audio Watermarking? Its a technique to embed signals into an audio file which cannot be heard by human-kind, but will be transfered from file to file, it doesn't matter if its recorded over the air or mixed together with multiple sounds. It is even possible to get the audio watermarks of all 5 sounds if you created a sound out of 5 separate sounds. Thats the current industry-standard of protecting sounds and music from copying, remixing etc. If someone is curious, the company can just download your video/music track/game whatever, check in with the audio watermark detector and see if your specific sound was used in the process. The only exception is if you really hard resample and disturb it, which might end up destroying the watermark or at least make it unrecognizeable. But to be true, you nowadays want clear and polished sound, no garbled stuff which sounds like out of a broken trashcan.Yes, it might be true that those sites allow you to download and keep those files forever, private copyright law and such stuff, noone will blame you for having all those sounds you like flying around on your private hard drive. What will actually become a problem if you're using them in a production without having a subscription to the service anymore, because that is the moment when people will become angry.Don't get me wrong though. Sound Producers usually won't pay money to track you down and file documents against you if you aren't making any money with your product. Thats probably the reason why noone ever aggressively contacted Oriol Gomez for his massive use of deffinitely stolen sounds in e.g. Mush-Z, or the guys from Crazy Party, because it simply wouldn't pay off. But as soon as you start releasing paid products and start making a bit money out of it, you might actually end up getting into trouble.Best Regards.Hijacker

I'm just making the point that in this case, not only is it almost impossible if pirated sounds where used, or even if not pirated, even if they where obtained by legal means, it would still be almost impossible to know what sounds one used for  the reasons outlined above; its berried too deeply in the mix, or something new, yes, using that particular sound is made, but again. That particular sound is only used as a bace idea, from which a new sound is generated, hnse,hense, nothing to do with the origional sound. Let me give yoll an example. I went out and recorted a train the other day. I then grabbed the idling of the train, and after much fucking about with it; a shitload of effects and manipulation... i turned it into... a race car. If you hear that race car sound on its own, you'll never think; hey, the origional sound for this was a idling train...

Hijacker, it would seem this is just not true. I have checked, and in an F A Q, it states about the oposit. You get to keep the files for ever. Now, they do not like people trying to get about 500 sounds at once though. For those having problems with the sight, what are you using? My mac kind of worked with previewing the files, but not the account part. Now that almost turned in to a mess.

Another thing that I don't think most people bought up, you don't see average people buying these huge libraries. These are bought out by studios, engineers, etc. People that make sounds for the hollywood libraries are probably and no position to worry about money and I don't think you're an evil, or shitty person for torrenting your sounds. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place and money rules everything in this world. Now when it comes to working class musicians, I look at it a little differently, but not entirely so, in a lot of these cases your money is going directly to them and they don't have a large fanbase, so the support they do get means a lot to them. And me being an artist myself, I have no problem with people listening to my music for free, I offer it for free and if people wanna pay for it, go rite a head, man. But I want fans. The money will come but the fans have to come first. And it's 2019, I personally wouldn't ever go after for anyone spreading my music around by any means, that's beneficial to me.

i have audio bloks... I dunno though. Its accessibility is not so good. I mean, before downloading a sound, you could preview it, but now? As far as I can tell, you cant preview sounds / music, you can just hit download and then see what you got. Aso, when downloading effects / music from that sight... i think you can only download one by one, or am i wrong? Anyway, sound design wise... Its not like music in terms of coppyright as some of you think. I've heard this from professional members in the industry. Lets say i graba coppyright sound, lets say, a ak47 shooting from Hollywood effects. Then, i modify the sound, like, i dunno, add some echoes, and other effects, such as... fazing and others, to turn it into a alien machinegun... That ak47 sound i used that now tuneturned into the alien gun? That sound is mine now. Why? Because I created something, yes, maybee using another's person's effect; but turned into something new that wasn't there before. Ok. As for what others have been saying; your right. Sound design is not just knowing how to record / edit sounds. It is also how to mix sounds together to create a new sound from existing effects, plus a whole bunch of other things. Good thing is, that I can always go out there and record my own sounds if need be, i'm making a library of all the sounds / ambiences i've recorded so far.

Just don't forget, it doesn't work like making a 1 month subscription, downloading all of their sounds at once and you're good to go forever. Thats simply not how it works. You'll need to have a subscription whenever you want to use those sounds in whatever project. I guess they know the risk and are ready to check on that if needed, like confirming the license by checking release dates and subscription dates of the software/radio play/whatever you're doing with those sounds.Best Regards.Hijacker

Here's what I'm wondering. I'd like to make this move as well for anything that uses sounds that I end up making, but have a bit of a problem. Considering that everything is moving to a subscription-based model, what is the site that hs the highest-quality sounds with the best prices? I don't want to have 1 subscriptions to various sound library sites just to get HQ sounds -- I did that once before and ended up having so many subscriptions I had to cancel that debit card because I couldn't keep track of them all.As for ambiances, I have more than enough and can use MyNoise; the sites I'm talking about are the places I can get other things than just 'ambiances'.

In fact that is exactly how you make sounds your own. As long as an original sound can't be fully reproduced from your work, you're fine in that respect. I.e. making ringtones out of production music is a no go, but mixing and mashing an atmosphere/ambiance/spell sequence? Now we're getting somewhere. That's why you'll notice that even TDV's assets were licensable under gpl.

Well shit, looks like he removed them from his site for what ever reason.  I used to have them but had to ditch those in the move to win 10 as well...  I'm sure someone around here has them...It was called free firearms sound library and there was a small like 2 dollar upgrade for a version with several more processed versions as well.The medieval weapons sound library is gone too, but everything else is still there?

I already have adobe and freesound.org packs,  even got a few free ones off of boom library,  but the quality on these is hit and miss  except for the free ones from boom library, which seems to have top-quality sounds whatever you’re looking for.

I guess, but if your recreating your not innovating, or at the very least your not bringing a bit of new audio into the stale existing soundscape.If you just mean getting a sound perfect from a cinematic point of view than, I guess that makes sense, but their are plenty of Indi Packs and even some free stuff that's honestly just as good or better than Sound Ideas, Hollywood Edge, Boom FX, Blastwave and the like.

through the past years to  be honest i've bin using these  pirated sfx a lot, but now    i'm trying to avoid using  the same sounds over and over, it gets    boring fast and fast, decides,  these libs are geting old but i admit though, i'm still downloading librarys through torrents, but sence   some of the sound effects i have   does not  meet with my  requirements  i have to search    for them in other sitessound design isn't just about  using the same sounds over and over and mixing them together, but also trying to use a difrent  combination  of sounds  from difrent sourcesi have started recording  sounds a couple months ago and until now i  got  over 200 files that  i mite clean and redesign and post them to freesound, and after  Gaining some recording gear i bought a couple weaks back i think i'll start recording my own sounds as well

through the past years to  be honest i've bin using these  pirated sfx a lot, but now    i'm trying to avoid using  the same sounds over and over, it gets    boring fast and fast, decides,  these libs are geting old but i admit though, i'm still downloading librarys through torrents, but sence   some of the sound effects i have   does not  meet with my  requirements  i have to search    for them in other sitessound design isn't just about  using the same sounds over and over and mixing them together, but also trying to use a difrent  combination  of sounds  from difrent sources

@Philip and everyone else: So do I, and now with the new all-you-can-eat subscription model a lot of newer sound sites are going for there really is no excuse for pirating stuff nowadays. Even then, a lot of newer indie sound libraries are cheaper as they are behind publishing platforms that support the creative effort and promote the diversity of sound creators - Sonice is a prime example here. Then there's Incompetech and zapsplat with their more than fair creative commons attribution license for free users, and a paid benefit (though I usually still credit even paid sounds just as some free positive exposure even though I technically don't have to if the license doesn't require it.

It feels very good that all those sites I searched for are now helping others!It's just really sad that the entire update I was going to make to my freesound collection was lost while moving from win 7 to 10, thanks to Mac's stupidity with missing metadata and not being able to skip it or repair it.I have the links saved on freesound thank god, but sorting through what I downloaded because I actually wanted it, and what I downloaded because I just wanted to see what it sounded like off the website and then got rid of, that's going to be a huge undertaking.I had also done allot of cleaning up older stuff, and now that's gone too.  :-(That's what I get for not making dual up to date backups I suppose...  I just didn't know my portable hard drive was quite that fucked until disk utility couldn't even find it.

Well my sounds are interesting.The first packs were from someone and I am unsure where he got the sounds from exactly about 100mb of them.Over 60gb of sounds came from people I was doing production for, from their servers, and yes a lot of those were comercial libraries.Those sources are dead so if I lose them I will lose them perminantly.Some others came from ftp servers I had access to that I had permition to get access to.I didn't torrent any sound file ever.A few are free of course.Games wize, yes, I freely admit to pirating sounds, but those sounds do not generally get used for anything, I just like listening to them from time to time.A lot of those are part of larger sounds.The gdc sound fx are good.As well as the pro sfx.I don't buy their stuff as such, but I entered a couple of their competitions and got secondary prize sample packs.I also got the blocks and chain pack they put out  a bit ago and last but not least the black friday new foley sound pack via promotion 50 bucks for free.Usually I run the free stuff first, there are places on the net where a lot of sounds, ie trek core startrek and the like are free now to a point.If you know where to look well.I have comercial cds of the authentic sea sound collection at 10 bucks a disk and I got all 8 cds.I also have imporio sound and a couple other cds which were 10 bucks comercially from a store.I have enough libraries.I lost some in a crash years back though like the bbc librarys.I don't know I could justify spending over 50 bucks on a library unless someone gave it to me or I had room to store it.However I was fortunate to get access to some now dead servers for certain users to legally use sounds for in house else I wouldn't have gotten what I got.There are also people that have flatly given me their sounds for work I did for them.On the subject of pirated sounds I have noticed my voice being used on a lot of games without me being asked permition.The main reason I don't give a fuck is rsgames.The shoot da me beta was never released as a complete game out of more than a beta that is, and while the sounds did appear in ages of slaughter and a few other things, they are mine, heck, I even had stuff appear in other projects.For me its polite to know where your stuff went but its not like company x said they owned my stuff.They were being used and I played the programs in question, liked them, decided that it was fine for what it was.I guess if I had really put work into it I'd geta bit angry but really none of the sounds I have ever had stolen bar the stuff in park boss, have made it into their origional projects.sdm was never released as a full version.Age of slaughter is dead, and swamp doesn't even have my voice in anymore.The only 2 games that are comercial are park boss and tubesim and to be honest, while both of these are good, they are finnished projects.Nick adamson does not own those sounds, I do.I'd prefur that they are not stolen as they are forfilling their positions nicely, the rest lost their positions after a time and then became free to use.Not everyone else will feel that way though.

As far as pirating, you shouldn't do it, but if you must, this library of Pirate Game Sounds would be very nice.Along the same lines, if you want to pirate a nice vocals library, this Pirate Voices is a steal, as is this additional secondary offering.If you're looking for an awesome torrent of sound effects, this library should wet your appetite.If you're gonna pirate, do it in style!Kai

I started investing in sound libraries when I was 18 or so, and can honestly say that I have paid for every single sound that has been used in my products. Back in the days of Pb-games I would look around for free sounds, but I never used one that I knew to be illegal. I think it is an important point for any serious game developer to only use legal content, always, with no exceptions. And that's the rule that I live by.Kind regards,Philip Bennefall

The best place to get sounds in bulk is probably the sonnis free give aways. Only problem with those is that they are sorted by creator, not put in to nice little catigories. So I'm just going to download a crap tun of those and use windows search when ever I need to find a sound effect and hope those gigs up on gigs become usefull.

@AnIdiot:Your argument is exactly what I've been trying to point out for a while now. Sound design takes a lot of work and money and dedication. Not to mention all the permits required for recording artillery/weapons, paying for a helicopter ride circling around a microphone array, etc. I also agree that a lot of big-name sound libraries don't even need to be bought, let alone pirated. Hollywood Edge for example? Way too overpriced if I'm being brutally honest. Why is that? Sound Ideas bought the rights, the original creators royalties are probably long since running their course. And it's the same damn price it's always been. When I can get a crap ton of indie libraries for cheaper but more impressive content. NS's library for 70 bucks. Omar Alvarado has an ambiance library as well (categorical library mind you, but still very good quality). The new sounds as a subscription approach, with sites like zapsplat and audioblocks. It isn't even worth buying big industry names anymore when there is a thriving market of indie content.
