Re: Pole, would you install a program in d?

If i had a D drive, and it was something like OS on C which is an SSD and games and stuff on D, which is spinning then yes, in fact I have in the past, but I wouldnt want to be forced into it, Im not cool with being forced into stuff so i just wouldnt install something that tried to do that.

Re: Pole, would you install a program in d?

Well it depends.I do have a couple computers with d drives. The issue is when you reformat you loose your registry I am not sure how easy it would be to link to your user account if it was stored on the d drive.Usually I load everything to my c drive, but the d drive is used for system images, backups, etc.On this laptop while a fair amount of stuff is on my c drive sfx and a few books etc are on the external drivve. My c drive is a traditional hard drive as I wanted to carry round a bit of music and stuff not rely heavily on my external, I use both drives I have one for working on and one for backups and another semi mangled one has some backups on it as well however to be honest I dont know. The other systems that I have here have at least a d drive one of them has its user account linked to it.the other has all programs on c and all backups on d.However all have at least 1 backup portable drive and one has 2 backup drivve
s and I maintain bits and bobs on other drives.I wouldnt want to be forced to load everything on d though. For me the external drivves are slightly slower than internals but then I have only one usb3 drive the rest of drives are all usb2 and they are a bit slower. The only time I use anything close to ssds is to transport updates from one system to another and or to transfer files from others to me and vice vversa.

Re: Pole, would you install a program in d?

The answer to this really depends on the setup of the specific machine. On my laptop, I have the following setup:c:\ main internal hddd:\ optical disk drivee:\ sd card that I leave in at nearly all timesI have desktops with the following configurations:machine 1:c:\ windows partition of main internal hddd:\ optical disk drivez:\ the rest of the internal hddmachine 2:c:\ windows internal hddd:\ second hdd for games/programs and other non-permanent datae:\ third hdd for perment data I dont want on the small c driveIf youre considering making a setup that installs directly to d:\, then youre probably signing up for trouble - on most machines thats going to be a cd, but may also be a recovery partition, a flash drive, or nothing at all.If you mean the question in the more vague sense of who installs games to non-standard locations then Im going to be a
bigtime yes - I have games and programs scattered across so many different devices Im lucky if I can remember whats holding what.

Re: Pole, would you install a program in d?

most install wizards allow one to choose where the installation files will go.If I had a d:\ drive, I most likely would install stuff to it as I am at this moment with my current setup, however remember some folks dont have a d:\ drive. In short? I would just let the user and installer do the work. And if you cant create a installer? People can still choose where the game/sofware will be stored, as is demonstrated by aprone.Just my two cents.
