Galaxy s3 is still a pretty nice phone to use, and that further proves the point that Android really does have quite a long, all be it unofficial support life. As for rooting, Ethan is absolutely right. I happily rooted my 3rd generation galaxy tablet. Unfortunately there was no major Cyanogen distribution for those devices, no other well known custom roms, and nearly all of the good ones were still based on the touchwizz kernel. Re: Why I left Linux and Android If it's a 3rd generation galaxy tablet, the specs on that device are disappointing, and that's putting it lightly. Mine was so bad that Gazelle, a trade-site for mobile devices, would allow me to part with my galaxy tablet for...get ready...a wopping 5 bucks! So I think they proved the point that that device is only good for wiping your ass. Lol! Admittedly, that tablet ran android 4.1.2 and never got updated. As for the tablet running Nougat? Nougat is still running strong on a number of devices, it even ran pretty well on my short run of testing it on the nexus 5 that I sold on blind-bst to make sure Nougat would run well. If Android 4.4.2 doesn't give me hell, then Nougat definitely won't disappoint after only a year of release. As for Samsung's newer phones, s5 and above run a lot better. Up to speed with a nexus or one+ phone? Perhaps not, but that's thanks to the bloatware. Even though the device runs faster, there's still bloatware, the be tter specs just make up for it. The lag isn't due to Samsung in general... but if you're talking about a galaxy s3 tablet that would probably be why, since those aren't the newest thing around. My galaxy s8 phone responds flawlessly with both Talkback and voice assistant, and I personally don't actually mind touchwiz all that much. I find people who judge android harshly usually come from either older devices which were indeed not that great, or haven't given it long enough of a chance... I had to purposely put my iphone away for two weeks and test this new phone before I started to like it. And as others have said, people should use what OS and what devices they like... both camps of fanboys are just as bad as each other. He didn't ever play with this tablet specifically but he did own Samsung phones. He told me the accessibility on Samsung devices was good, and he never had issues with the phones he had compared to the Tablet. And reviews on Amazon were praising its performance. Meh, should've done more research I guess, but I never know what to believe when I read opposing opinions. I'll try Talkback at some point and see how it works, but the lag remains to be one of my biggest gripes with the device. Re: Why I left Linux and Android Ray, I had a pretty crappy experience with my samsung galaxy tablet. It's just a bloated, slow device all around. TTalkback is a lot better speed-wise than Voice Assist, but you're still gonna want a better experience. Even the nexus 7 tablets ran better. As for bricking, this is not always the case with samsung devices, but if you have a nexus, that's pretty much impossible to hard brick. Back when I had my nexus 5 and my primary machine was a windows box, I always had an emergency flash batch script ready that, when run, would flash the out-of-box firmware of 4.4.2 on my phone, and within 5 minutes a near unbootable system was good as new. Samsung is a little harder as that's odin -based which is a dfu mode of sorts, but a galaxy tab *can* be unbricked, although sometimes requiring sighted help. If that doesn 't do much, then I might have to do something more drastic, which would leave me totally in the dark. Furthermore, I've heard scary stories of how people bricked their Android devices so bad that they had to be serviced to restore to factory operation, and that pretty much stops me in my tracks. Before complaining, get device with Android 7.1.1 or even 8.0 Orio once it comes out, and then you can say that Android's accessibility is really bad. Oh, and I haven't commented Linux yet in this topic. I love what Linux does, and how it does, but Linux accessibility is way behind other platforms, at least for GUI. I was using Arch Linux for about 4 months alone, and the first thing that I didn't like is Orca's current web support. Next, QT accessibility is far from being good. I'm doing sound editing and audio production, and none of the apps for such kind of work are accessible enough on Linux. That's why I went back to Windows, but it was very funny experience for me to work in Linux environment for 24 hours. I say good, but it's not enough for my personal needs. It was always a heavy android skin. My $65 cheapo special goes like hell, I'd go so far as to say it's faster under the finger than voiceover, which has always felt the slightest bit more sluggish though I do think that is by design more than anything. Re: Why I left Linux and Android Since I'm strongly considering a career in IT, I've been playing with all these systems except Linux. Each platform has its strengths and weaknesses. I know I used to criticize Microsoft Windows pretty hard for lack of built-in accessibility, but that has changed over the past year. Now I'm using Windows 10, macOS, iOS and to a lesser extent Android.As long as you stick to the latest version of Android or can get at least Android 5.0, you're good to go for nearly all daily tasks. I started out using Kitkat and wasn't really impressed with it. Web views caused TalkBack to freeze and I found the nonworking accessibility shortcut to be unacceptable. Fortunately, Lollipop fixed these issues and it's only been getting better. As soon as LineageOS 15 is available for my 2013 Nexus 7, I'm jumping onto Android 8.0 Orio.I love using macOS. The only problems I've run into are the horrible PDF support (which is vastly improved in the upco ming High Sierra release) and the lack of native MTP support in the Finder. This is extremely irritating because it means I have to use third party applications to access the internal storage of my Android device. I'd rather just plug it in and get access to the files in the Finder. As for Linux, I don't have the motivation to touch that just yet. There are so many distributions and I don't know which ones include Orca. I also don't like that the only choice of speech is the very robotic version of eSpeak. I've also heard that Orca has some problems, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Then again, Linux is more suited to running servers rather than standard GUI computing from what I've read. IMHO there is absolutely no use of a fanboys vs fanboys topic. do we use Windows, Linux, IOS, Android, etc. The truth is, there are so many things that establish and change perspective that it seems silly to think we can control the resultant opinions. IF there was one best that we could argue for, if there was some objective way to measure the best operating system, then great. But there isn't.Myself, I've used Windows all my life and have never tried Mac or Linux. I'd like to try Mac at some point for various reasons, but haven't gotten around to thinking about the easiest way to make that work. As for Linux and other operating systems like it, I have little interest in learning a new operating system with the reputation Linux seems to have. A lot of people who get into Linux seem to be of the type who like experimenting, who like to do things in a different way than most o ther people, or who have specific goals in mind that Windows or some other operating system struggle to manage. That's largely not my thing. But if someone makes me aware of a possible usage that interests me which is more practical with Linux or something like it, then I will consider trying to learn it, but I still don't know how confident or ready I would be.So then we get to IOS and Android. I started with an IPhone in 2012. I tried it because I had heard litttle if no recommendation for Android or any other smartphone at that time. I needed an accessible cell phone, preferably a smartphone because I do enjoy using one piece of technology for a lot of purposes. There were games and apps on IOS I wanted to check out that weren't available anywhere else as well, so getting an IPhone was an easy decision. So, I bought an IPhone, well my family got it for me for Christmas. I have been using IOS for 5 years come December 16.Yes, I've found reasons to not like it. ITunes being a bloated tab fest. However I don't use ITunes much, and when I do need to use it, I only use it for specific tasks, like sharing audio memos or other files with file sharing. I've gotten pretty quick at that, and besides I only have to do it maybe twice a month, though sometimes more often when I'm more busy. If I could use Explorer to do it, then great. But this works well enough now that I've found a way, and I don't mind so much anymore.Sure, I can't install third-party TTS engines, but to be honest, I really don't have a big issue with Vocalizer. Having something like Eloquence would be awesome, but at this point I don't know how well it would sit with me. I've gotten so used to Vocalizer on my phone, and more recently, the new and improved Siri voices in IOS 11 betas which I really do like, though they are a bit laggy. I'm still waiting for that to be fixed, but I'm patient. If I can' t have Eloquence, I'll gladly take any of those voices instead. There are far worse alternatives!No SD card. Yeah it's annoying but the less SD cards I have, the easier for me. I lose them all the time. So I've managed to work around no SD card.More expensive prices for apple devices. That could be a problem in future depending on a lot of things. Who knows? For now it isn't, since my family are able to afford getting new phones every two or three years. My mom has an IPhone as well, and she normally takes my old one so I can get the new. As for other people on our plan, there is only one other family member and he has an Android which he pays for. So when we upgrade, we only end up having to purchase one new IOS device instead of two, which is nice IMHO. Also, our plan allows us to pay our phones off as part of our bill so the immediate impact of the higher price isn't felt so much.What keeps me liking IOS is that while there are things that annoy me, I am still so used to it, I feel so comfortable in it. In my opinion, Apple designed the operating system for people who want it that way. When you get an Apple device, you basically know what you're getting, with perhaps a few exceptions which are easily dealt with. Go ahead, laugh at me for being stuck in their ecosystem. I don't care.Now, am I going to say that Android is crap? No. I actually do own an Android and I know other people who do as well. I got the Samsung Galaxy S3 Tablet about 6 weeks ago because I've had an increasing number of people asking me for help with Android. I figured why not learn it, especially since there are things on Android I've wanted to try out.I don't think Android is crap or that it's not a worthy operating system of someone's day-to-day usage. In fact, I like it a lot. I can easily transfer files from within Explorer as was pointed out a ton throughout this topic. There is no ITunes to get in the way of that. They're Android One device makers, and all of their devices use Google's stock Android. Hardware is not perfect, but it's good enough for that price, they're much cheeper than Google Pixel. Code Factory pulled it off on Android, granted maybe through the help of a newly created .sso from Nuance perhaps, but if Apple has had a relationship with Nuance for so long, they could probably, if they wanted to, come up to them to say hey, it seems like plenty of folks want this, can we put it in? Yeah, sure. @slj I'll bet it was just a bad tablet, what tablet was it? I personally recommend the nexus devices. They are the best android devices I've seen. The thing with android is you can't just pick it off the shelf like Apple devices. Just like you have to research to see which windows machine has the least amount of bloatware, same goes for Android phones. Fortunately, it's gotten way better than it was in Android accessibility's infancy. Damn near every phone you get will at least have talkback installed. But that doesn't mean you'll get the same accessibl e experience. On Android 8.0 Oreo, the shortcut has finally gotten easier. Press and hold both volume buttons for 3 seconds...talkback on! And it works, all the time. I know this because I've been through plenty of accessibility shortcut breakages. On Kitkat for example, it would really only work once or twice a session before you had to reboot. On Marshmallow it worked perfectly, so did it on Nougat. And obviously in Oreo they changed it to something much better, that doesn't even require the home button which is good because, again, not all devices have a physical home button. But a manufacturer's own bloatware can make Android headache city as far as accessibility is concerned, especially! on older devices. On Android it could be a bit harder, but it's not impossible. GMail application is accessible, but I don't like the interface so I've got AquaMail which is the most accessible email client on Android and deleting messages is simple as tapping on a selector to the left of each message and choosing delete.But you guys who constantly complain about Android's eas of use, look at iTunes. It took me a bunch of time tabbing through the iTunes interface and finding a right place just to transfer a stupid recording to my PC. I'm using my device for listening to music and recording stuff as well, so it's really counterproductive for me to waste my time just to copy a single file onto device. The only thing that Apple allows you to do via copy-paste is transfering your pictures and vide os, which is very important for a totally blind person . I agree that Android's openness has it's bad sides, but at least you can do many more things and transfering files is as simple as finding a device in Windows Explorer and copying-pasting a file or folder. And using 3rd-party apps is something that sighted people do as well, because even on Windows you will certainly use a better web browser than Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge. I don't believe that Windows Narrator will ever support third-party apps, since Microsoft is focusing only on accessibility of their own apps, so NVDA will be step further for a long time.Have you ever asked yourself why iOS apps are more expensive than Android apps? Well, read my post number 24 again and you will know the answer. XCode which is used for developing iOS apps probably requires a better Mac computer, which is far from cheep, and XCode doesn't run on Windows.Yes, Voice Over is nice for what it does, at least on iOS, but some people don't use their phones only for calling, messaging and mailing. But it also should never -- and I do mean never -- be something you fear. Keep in mind that all of the computers we've ever made are just tools. They do what we tell them to do. It's the way we use them -- what we tell them to do -- that gives certain ways of computing bad reputations. But as Jack has said, if your going to run a server, you best learn how to use a command-line interface. It honestly isn't very difficult -- it's almost like your having a conversation with your computer. In fact, that's what most technicians imagine it as being: a conversation between two different things. You can ask the computer to provide you data, the computer can ask you to provide it data, both (or either) of you can refuse to cooperate... that's all it really is. It's hard to adjust to, I know. But you will find that the command-line interface, while seeming like an innocent, harmless little thing, is far, far more powerful than any GUI-only computer user can imagine. In fact, the command-line interface is definitely the most powerful interface that a computer has ever had. The interface is so powerful that Linux GUIs use it as a backend -- you just don't realize it. Hell, the windows GUI is just a front-end to the command-line interface (albeit a very restricted one). You might even find that you do things far faster on the command-line interface than you would in a graphical one. Re: Why I left Linux and Android Well I have friends on both sides.Android devices can be a lot cheaper than apple units.The issue is that once you buy into an echosystem you are stuck with it, ie I am unsure how you can convert your data from apple to android, itunes will accept everything going back into it however.There are contacts apps for the rest, and apps for both systems exist so in that respect there is no issues.Android systems can be vastly cheaper than apple due to the opensource nature and you can even access those android device via usb debugging.Apple does lock a user into what they want.At the same time you don't have all those interface issues that you can with android and without needing to get different keyboards and launchers, etc.On the subject of windows, to the poster who complained about it, yeah I agree with you but microsoft controls a lot of the space, it has to compete in smartphones but there are a lot more windows apps than there are mac and linux though ms and others are waying into just about every market app wize where and whenever they can.And further more if I started again, I'd probably be on a mac or linux right now.A few friends say that desktops are dynosaws and the ultrabook is the way to go.I still like offline storage, all those security issues aside.I have had power cuts either due to failiers or planned shutdowns.ANd I can tell you your cloud data that you rely on is no good if you don't have the net.I feel for those with 128gb or less there are units with 16-32gb those boxes rely on the cloud for apps and data, and with ms accounts computer login.This means you are totally locked out without making another account or a reformat to get your system to even boot.Thankfully ms has given users most bar a few features like data, and settings sync which can be got around with other solutions and finding your computer online and stuff like that however the apps accounts give you apps access without locking out your system.It all depends what you spend on something, most blind games are windows based so you need windows at some point.As for linux, I have no planns to really use it as a primary os.However I did some certificate training at uni in it and enjoy it.My eventual goal is to get a windows 10 laptop and convert this old 7 eventually into linux that won't be till win7 dropps out of support.Even then with all the issue I have with some 32 bit apps I am half thinking of installing windows xp or a 32 bit os on this box and using it for gaming and media playback.Then again, my next box will probably be gaming grade and will then have hardwre vertualisation I hope and then I can start running vms of other oses on vmware player then it won''t matter that much.If I can convert this old tosh to linux with a desktop distribution like arch sonar or mate or somethi ng, and if I can get used to it, have a good media player even if I need winamp and wine in there that may be it.Its either that or just get and install xp, run all the old 32 bit software including the software for my phone and really old games and that will be that, its just I want to use my system as it was supposed to and not let it lie in the dust. In the Smartphone world, I started with Android which gave me the biggest disappointment as I couldn't really use my phone as others did. I won't go over the same words I have said again because it becomes tiring for you to hear me, but I won't choose an operating system which requires you to be a blind expert and a highly regardid experimentalist. Why do I say this? I say this because on Android, as a blind person you have to experiment so much to find what's best for you. Install hundrids of applications to find one that works, and replace most of Android's environment with software which doesn't fail to get along well with Talkback. This is the process of experimentation. You say that Android offers you more choices, but you forget that the more choices you have, the less reliant you'll be on one. As an example, on Android you have two screen readers, each with its own good and bad features, whereas on iOS you have only one, which means that you'll rely on that single one. While on Android you have two screen readers. You will switch often between them, because a feature which is found on Talkback isn't found on ShinePlus and vice-versa. These are the reasons we stick to Apple, not that we love the beauty of its logo. I think you are being more arrogant than the fanboys of both sides. I always used iPhones, last year, I made atempts with my fathers HtC one M7 and liked it actually. I than tried my hands at a test, I banned my iPhone one week from using and got a cheap galaxy s7 edge.Well, I pulled through that week, but it was quite hard. The way how you change navigation settings is good in voice assistant, but not in talkback. The screen reader lags quite much, I am used to the on point announcement of voice over, even though the S7 had an exynos 8890 as a SOC, it still felt laggy.Also, web browsing was tedious, due to the reasons mensioned above.I switched back to my iPhone and solt the galaxy.For a mobile laptop which I could carry around, I bought an MacBook Air 13 in Jun and I like it very much. Linux is something I need to try out.so, I can't yet switch from iOs to androit, and if anyone thinks I am an apple fanboy, well, I don't give a flying shit in that regard.Greetings Moritz. I'm the kind of person who wants to work with tools that are readily available to host a web server, database server, and PHP so I can install wordPress without having to do a lot of tinkering. I went with Windows, but a lot of people act like using Windows Server is a crime, and that using remote desktop is not a good solution. I'm not sure how to learn command lines, or if I even want to, since I have grown up using graphical user interfaces. I have used Android, and I only use it for what I need it to do. I don't play around with the source code. As a matter of fact, I have an Amazon Fire Tablet that I could hack into and make it work with Android apps, since it was only built using the Android source code. Beyond that, there isn't enough that is alike in the two operating systems to call them anything but different in their own way. As for ios not collecting caches, let's remember that ios too is guilty of that. Does it collect as much? Perhaps, perhaps not. But Android has a direct way to clear the caches that is very straight forward. Settings, about phone/tablet, tap the build number 7 times, go back, got o developer options, turn on usb debugging. Connect your device to your computer, assuming you have adb installed, open a commandline terminal, and then:adb reboot bootloaderfastboot wipe cacheand, for good measure, let's also:fastboot wipe dalvicfastboot rebootVoila! You will now be rebooted within seconds, hopefully with an improved speed boost since your cache partition is cleared. You should make it a regular habit to clear your caches from time to time. Ios kinda has indirect easter-egg methods of doing it, but no direct way. It's not impossible, however, so find a method that works for you and get in the habit of using it. And Android accessibility isn't cobbled. Is it perfect? Far from it, but neither is ios, windows, linux, mac, chrome os, the former firefox os, blackberry, risk os, ms dos, ok I'll stop. Lol! But you get my point. Has Android accessibility gone through leaps and bounds? Yes! Apple? Also yes. Has Apple gone downhill in some software versions? Yes, a few. Has Google? Yes, in Android 5.0, fixed later in 6.0, and I feel it's at its peak with 7.0 Nougat and the up and coming 8.0 Oreo. Remember, Google started off requiring a navigation control such as a trackball or arrow keys. Ice Cream Sandwich came out a year and a half later and impressed us with explore by touch, and really it's only gotten better fro m here. And plus, talkback is open source, something voiceover will never be. But that's ok, because Voiceover is pretty solid as it stands. Not sure how many people would use this on mobile, but you know what both screenreaders are lacking? Scripting support. Spiel had scripting when it was around. Now that I've worked out some issues I was having with soft braille keyboard, I find myself being, as the last poster said, just as productive. I am disappointed at the selection of games available, and with the lack of accessibility in one of the apps on which I watch movies and TV, But other than those minor things I enjoy android very much. Re: Why I left Linux and Android Devin, I'm very glad you came to choose Apple again after trying all that can possibly be tried on the technology that is available today on the market. I like Apple because, not only are its devices fully accessible, meaning that you can set them up yourself on all stages, use a wide number of applications that cannot be used comfortably on other operating systems, and never have the need to seek sighted assistance for anything on your computer, phone or iPad. Apple is also well constructed, and by this I mean simple to use, considerably bug-free, and consistently stable. Surely, it is restricted in many areas but you can accomplish the same tasks you carry out on Android or Windows. Since the very first day when I got my iPhone, and up to this day that I'm using it, it has never crashed for any reason. On Windows, for example, applications crash for no apparent reason, and aside from crashing themselves and subsequently becoming unusable, they also crash the whole Wind ows environment, and you are unable to use your computer until you forcepower it off. Also, at times, some areas of Windows won't work as they should normally do. For example, my Windows machine sometimes turns on in 45 seconds, sometimes in 1 minute and 30 seconds. Android is better at this stage as when, for example, an application crashes, you just press the homebutton and the hastle with your device stops. You just need then to close the applications and start it again. However, Android has the habit of collecting junk memory which leads to your phone being slow. Not only it becomes a slow device, but the battery as a consequence drains significantly more quickly. However, on the iOS, I do not experience this problem. It is smooth, stable, and with significantly less bugs than the afore mentioned operating systems.
