Re: Fandoms, conventions and the idea of cosplaying What I'm mostly interested in is what people make their costumes out of and how similar it is to the original costumes actors wear. Especially for the really good costumes like stormtrooper armor. I know there are professionally made costumes that can get quite expensive. One that comes to mind is the premium Darth Vader costume that actually has injection mold plastic pieces. Also, anyone ever seen a quality borg costume and know how those are made? Re: girls you like but never told
Re: girls you like but never told Definitely. I was attracted to this girl when I was in school for a few years but didn't know how to tell her. Part of that was due to me not thinking she'd even be interested in me that way at all. Other people knew and told her, but I never told her myself. She ended up leaving the school before I graduated. No, not because of me. I knew I could probably find her online after she left, but I didn't because I didn't want her to think I was stalking her or something. I always wished I had told her how I felt even if she didn't return my feelings. A few years later I told someone about her and they found her for me, even called her house. She ended up adding me on MSN Messenger. However, we somehow lost contact. I think she stopped using that account years ago and never told me.About a year ago, she found me on facebook. Imagine my surprise when that friend request came up. A few months after that, she messaged me. This was back when Skype worked as a Facebook messenger. She wanted to know how I was doing, if I had found the right person yet, and, surprisingly, if I had fallen in love with her all those years ago and if I still felt the same way now.so, I finally, after many, many years, got to tell her how I felt about her back then. Mission accomplished. We don't talk much but I do keep an eye on her Facebook page. Stupid Skype dropping Facebook support makes messaging ridiculous unless there's something else that can be used on a PC for Facebook messages.Anyhow, yay for long stories about random things! Re: New IPhone september 16 2016 I feel for the people who use hearing aids. If ear pods have to go inside your ear, that's not going to work well. At least with headphones you can sort of put those near the microphones. Re: New IPhone september 16 2016 Dragomier wrote:I've not had the time to read through this whole topic, but I will say I am willing to upgrade to iPhone 7. I figure, we're all going to have to upgrade someday. Some Apple users might switch to Android but the ones that wish to stick with Apple will eventually have to get used to the lack of a normal earphone jack so why not get used to it now before other things are built upon it, thus making it harder to adapt to? That's doubtful though, because Apple would have to make it useful for people just coming to their service. That's the sort of attitude I really dislike when it comes to products. We'll be forced to deal with a product change anyway, so might as well deal with it now before we're forced to. If something's fine the way it is, I don't want to be forced to do things a different way just because the corporation thinks it's cool. Just accepti ng the change tells the company that you'll buy and use their products no matter what they force you to deal with. If I want to use headphones and can already plug them into my device, why on earth would I think it's acceptable to have to buy yet another accessory to hook into my device to do what I've doing all along? That's just silly. If you don't care personally and are okay with the loss of the headphone jack it's not such a big deal, but if you care about it, you shouldn't have to let Apple walk all over you. They may control the product design, but a company can't function without customers.PS. I don't use Apple devices, but I get irritated when companies force a change on people just because they can and people think it's perfectly okay. If you don't think it's okay, don't support the decision. Yes, you may have to upgrade eventually, but don't just lie down and take that crap. Re: Monthly chat October 2016
Re: Monthly chat October 2016 As for me, I'll be setting up a new Windows 10 machine soon, as this Vista machine lags to heck for over 48 hours whenever it updates. I'm currently waiting for my JAWS 17 DVD to get here. I had to upgrade it to 17.I did some research into 10 and was dismayed to learn that if you have a single account tied to a Microsoft account and no local accounts, you could be locked out of your own local machine should you lose internet access for one reason or another. I asked about this in the Microsoft Community forum and was told to just create a user account tied to a Microsoft account for normal use, and a local account for when that fails. Pretty silly, but whatever works. I want to be able to use Cortana, and it appears you need to be logged into a user account tied to a Microsoft account to take full advantage of it. Hopefully JAWS behaves well on the login screen with multiple accounts are present, as I remember that being an issue in earlier Windows versions starti ng with Vista. It also appears that Narrator will read things when you set the machine up from what I've been hearing, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the process goes. The annoying bit will be waiting for it to update to the latest version.I also listened to and read through the webinar Freedom Scientific did about JAWS and Windows 10, so I know a bit of what to expect in regards to the start menu and file explorer. Re: eloquence 4.7 for nvda
Re: eloquence 4.7 for nvda This is how I, personally, think things should work. Note that I know they don't work like this, and I'm sure there are some problems with this reasoning. If a company discontinues or abandons a product and doesn't sell it to another company so it can be distributed, then people should be allowed to redistribute the product as long as it isn't being done for commercial gain. That part might be rather difficult to enforce though. I imagine all the copyright laws are there so people can make money from what they produce as that's how some people make a living. If they're no longer providing the product, then I see no real reason why they should have a problem with someone else copying it provided they're not making any money doing so. If they want money from it, then they should license someone else to distribute it.If a company wishes to take legal action against people distributing a product under the above terms, then they should be required to distribute the product again. It seems only fair to everyone involved. Re: Regarding Accessibility in New Products
Re: Regarding Accessibility in New Products I agree. It sucks when something isn't accessible, but there might be developers who have never even met a blind person.A while ago, I contacted a company called Natural Machines that's trying to produce a 3D printer for food, such as pasta and that sort of thing. I told them that it would be neat if that kind of thing was accessible. They told me that they would have to talk to the engineers about that. I don't know if they were just blowing me off or what, but it was an acceptable response.Another experience I had was with a company called Imzy, which is a new social media platform that's in beta. Imzy doesn't currently play very nice with screen readers at all, so I contacted them about it and offered to help if they needed help. They told me that they were already considering how to make their site more accessible. So yes, there are reasonable people out there who may consider making products accessible. All it takes is a well-writt en request to consider accessibility. As for those people who simply don't care, I'd say stay polite and get more people on it, even sighted people. If companies see that making things accessible is something customers want, it may cause them to seriously consider it. However, sending nasty e-mails and making demands doesn't give a very good impression. Consider this. You're representing the rest of the blind community when you send such messages, and if you send nasty messages and make demands, you're giving all of us a bad rep. Re: I'm seriously concerned
Re: I'm seriously concerned This reminds me of a conversation I was having with someone over Skype chat, as it sort of deals with the whole entitlement thing. It started with Virtual MIDI Synth. We were talking about how the new beta version's tabs have to be navigated by using OCR on the window. I told the person I was talking to that I had just signed up on their forum and could make them aware of this issue. His was response was basically why bother? If we need to access a control that isn't accessible, we can just OCR the window and it's all good. I told him that I simply wanted to make the developer aware of accessibility issues, nothing more. If the issue isn't resolved, it's no big deal since there is a way around it. His point was that there isn't an accessibility issue because the screen reader can OCR the window and the controls can be accessed. My point was that just because screen readers have a special way to read certain controls, that doesn't mean softw are developers shouldn't worry about accessibility at all.We then started talking about PdF files and how JAWS has had the ability to OCR PDF files that are just scanned images for a while now. Again, I said that just because JAWS has the ability to do this doesn't give companies an excuse not to produce accessible PDF files. His response was basically it's not their problem now because JAWS can read the images, and taking a scanned document and turning it into text takes a lot longer to do.I'm sure I'm missing a bit more that was said, but I don't have the conversation history anymore. Now there's the possibility that to him and other people reading this I probably sounded like your typical entitled blind brat. However, I still stand by my point. In my opinion, just because screen reader developers found ways to adapt to p roblems doesn't mean companies and developers are completely off the hook. If we don't let people know about accessibility problems and just silently adapt to them, no one will know there are accessibility issues in the first place. That's where being polite and reasonable comes in instead of just complaining. If the companies and developers don't care, fine. We'll find a way to adapt, but I still believe we should try to reach out and make them aware anyway. Eric Damery even said on FSCast that the PDF OCR was a fallback measure and companies should still do their best to produce accessible PDF files. That doesn't automatically make my opinion correct, but I think it's something to consider. Under no circumstances should Someone who has no idea what they're doing at all and just clicks random crap have an admin account. This will prevent some things from installing on the system, but not all. Is UAC even on for that matter?Second, what anti--virus and anti-spyware is installed? I realize that no solution is 100% effective, but a good anti-virus will catch a good deal of the nasty crap out there before it can even infect the system, and its definitions need to be constantly updated. Re: Window-Eyes No Longer for Sale
Re: Window-Eyes No Longer for Sale I think another part of the problem is when people look at something and think, "I think this could or should be easier." They then proceed to write software that holds the user's hand, and then everyone forgets how everything works without said software.Research It in JAWS is a prime example of this. I do love the feature myself, but I also know how to look things up without it. If someone is going to be taught to use Research It first, they may not learn how to do the same task without the feature. Using the feature is just faster, so naturally people are going to flock to it for laziness/productivity reasons.Another good example in my opinion is HTML editors. They hold your hand throughout the creation of a website. The person using the software doesn't need to know a thing about HTML. However, if something goes wrong, and things will eventually go wrong, they won't know what to do because they can't read the HTML of their pages. But when you're working on a rather large site and have a deadline to meet, would you really want to have to type it all out by hand? I think not.So, I say people should learn both ways. Teach them the concepts of doing things on their own first, then teach them about the software that can do it for them afterward. Re: Window-Eyes No Longer for Sale
Re: Window-Eyes No Longer for Sale that's how business works. Find something people need. Find a way to get it to them. Charge for it. If a product is good enough, people can get away with charging as much as they want to some extent. Sometimes high prices are necessary to keep a company going as well. Compared to the rest of the tech market, the VI and blindness market isn't that large. So while I agree that the prices for JAWS and assistive technology in general are a bit insane, it's worth looking at all the potential variables before saying prices are ridiculous and unwarranted. That isn't to say that it's fair to us that we have to purchase such an expensive piece of software to use a Windows machine that a sighted person can use out of the box, but until things change, it is what it is. We can either purchase JAWS if we can afford it/get an agency to purchase it for us, or we can use NVDA.As far as I know, FS and MS are working closely together to make sure JAWS works as well a s possible with Windows 10, and at the same time, MS is improving Narrator quite a bit. If Narrator is improved enough, we may no longer need JAWS or any other screen readers in the future. Note that I say "need." People may still want to purchase JAWS or use NVDA, particularly if they offer enhancements that go beyond what Narrator can do now and in the future. It's all personal preference. If enough people stop using JAWS, FS would most likely discontinue it simply due to the costs associated with maintaining it.As for Apple products, they cost an arm and a leg as it is last I knew. People can either buy a Windows machine and a screen reader unless they plan on using a free one like NVDA, or they can buy an extremely expensive mac that comes with a screen reader built in. Re: Accessible Antivirus?
Re: Accessible Antivirus? I've been using ESET NOD32 for years and, to my knowledge, it has yet to let me down. Not that I purposefully go on dangerous sites, open unknown e-mail attachments, click on phishing links, or download a ton of software. Re: Window-Eyes No Longer for Sale
Re: Window-Eyes No Longer for Sale I still wish there was an accessible way to change BIOS settings. BIOS is loaded before anything else though, so no screen reader is going to be able to do that to my knowledge.Does Narrator work in safe mode yet? Or is that the recovery thing I keep hearing about? I remember Window Eyes started working in safe mode some time ago. Re: easy meals to get started with cooking your own food? I would recommend getting a NuWave oven and/or cooktop, but I don't know if they're available in your country. The Instant Pot is nice too or so I hear. Re: easy meals to get started with cooking your own food?
Re: easy meals to get started with cooking your own food? The NuWave oeven is a rather small, compact oven that uses conduction, convection, and infrared to cook food. It beeps and has actual buttons instead of a touch screen so is very useable. The NuWave cooktop is a small induction cooktop. This also beeps and has buttons. Re: Jaws eloquence crash strings
Re: Jaws eloquence crash strings JAWS and other paid screen readers were developed because there was a need for them so blind people could use computers. That's how you start a business. Determine what the market needs, find a way to make it available, and sell it for profit while also having enough to keep your business going. One reason why JAWS is so expensive is due to the rather small market it's intended for. It's the same with any assistive technology. Yes, it sucks, but it's how it is. That's probably why NVDA was made. Someone got sick of having to pay such a high price just to be abel to use Windows, so they stopped complaining about it and made their own free screen reader. Both NVDA and JAWS have advantages and disadvantages. Why can't we justl eave it at that instead of trying to convince everyone one is better than the other? Re: What methads do you use for cooking and cutting food?
Re: What methads do you use for cooking and cutting food? If you're able to, get a NuWave induction cooktop and use that instead of a stove. The thing about that is that you can only use pans that are induction compatible. These are enameled iron and steel, stainless steel with a magnetic base, and cast iron. They're a lot safer because it only heats up where the pan is.A NuWave oven would also be a good thing to get. It can bake, air fry, etc. Anything that you can put in an oven can be put in one of those as well. All NuWave products have buttons or knobs last I knew, so no touchscreens.
