[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: ReplayGain, sound quality and amp work

2005-11-10 Thread oreillymj

surely it just boosts the 'low' tracks - so how come -11dBs

By default, mp3gain tries to add tags which would make the sound appear
normalised to 89db.
It will write positive or negative gain tags to achieve that.

The -11db, would mean that the track would play back at 100db without
any gain applied.

 Max

Your amp is only working as hard as you drive the speakers so no, it
doesn't run hotter or use more power.

It is very hard to generalize on how hard the amp is working without
knowing a bit more. Class A amps use a lot of power no matter how
hard they are being driven. Class A/B are sortof like Class A,
and then sort of like Class B. Class B amps generally use
more input amps when they are producing more output watts.
(Most folks think of output watts, watts in == watts out + watts lost)

So if you have a typical amp, and are listening to the same sound level,
it is typically drawing the same power from your local electricity
company, generating the same heat.

Audiophiles tend to notice different things, and sometimes
how much gain the amp is putting out (especially for tube/valve amps)
has impact on the sound.

Adjusting the gain digitally may have impact on the sound quality
depending on the dithering used and all sort of esoteric stuff.

If you assume not bit errors, then yes, they will sound the same ;-)

There will undoubtedly be errors, but as to how significant an effect
they have -- that all will depend on a variety of things, especially
your equipment + setup. I'd try an experiment on a few key pieces of
music that you have and make an evaluation on that.

I've never bothered with a comparison between EAC unsecure mode and
another piece of ripping software - EAC probably has the edge due to
the features it uses (even unsecure), but if I had to take a view, I'd
say that it would be impossible to tell the difference by ear.

I have re-ripped everything I have using EAC secure to FLAC - of course
my starting point was an AAC/MP3 library so it was an easy decision.

What are the best setting to use in eac when ripping to FLAC? Do you
know if tags are supported in FLAC and if so which editor do you
prefer?
I'm switching over from MP3 (CDEX) to FLAC. But i want to do it right
the first time before i do all cd's

Thanks.

Im using this with EAC:

Program used for compression:
E:\soft\flacattack\flacattack.exe

Additional command line options:
E:\soft\flacattack\flacattack.ini %s %a %t %g %y %n %m
%o

For additional tagging, search for The Godfather, although lately Ive
been using foobar a lot.

DACs around when it comes to jitter.

From the reviews I've read the Benchmark and Lavry da2002 should be
able to go toe to toe (Stereophile has one I believe). Clearly the
Lavry will have a bit of an edge.

Of course, the cost/benefit curve is rather steep...

That's always a good point.

Everything is always moving in the audio world, but I think the one
component you dont want to drop too much on (personally) is the DAC -
if only because the technology is advancing so quickly.

I friend of mine has a slightly older Meridian transport and DAC. I can
confidently put my SB2 and Benchmark (yes, and the SB2 solo) up against
it. In a couple of years I fully expect a DAC that blows the Benchmark
away for half the price.

So with that in mind the Benchmark was the right performance/price
tradeoff for me at the moment.

If was in the position of having a SB2/3 and a few grand budget, I'd
certainly drop all that into the amp and speakers. Once you get into
the 10k mark I think an external DAC starts to become relevant.

I'm not keen on arbitrary rules of thumb, but I guess all this means it
that I believe a DAC should be around 10-15% of a total system.

Benchmark says that their system is immune from jitter. But
I'm not smart enough to know if that is just marketing or
backed up by engineering.

At these price points, personal taste is a big deal.

You are way too conservative. In a couple of years, the SB5 will include
that DAC. The SB2 is a big improvement from the olden days.
