[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Squeezebox 2 - Subtle noise and distortion.

2005-11-21 Thread Patrick Dixon

This states you should use the mov wav * * entry in convert.conf for
playback of AAC files. This has never worked for me (I just get a load
of digital static noise) which is why after searching these forums I
switched to using mov aif * *.
I tried
mov wav * *
with the same result as you.

I also tried to create a
mov flac * *
entry, piping the output of faad to flac
I couldn't get that to work either, but that maybe because I didn't
really know what I was doing!

Yes - I think there is definitely an opportunity for someone to publish
some documentation on how convert.conf works for us Linux folk to learn
from. Anyway, that's probably a whole new thread in itself!

Thanks
Nick.

I don't think I followed the steps properly to revert back to firmware
 15. I have 6.2.0 and 6.1.1. I copied the files from server/Firmware
in 6.1.1 to the same directory in 6.2.0. Restared my SB2 and it said
it was updating the firmware. However, when I look at the settings in
the SB2 after the update, it says it is firmware 26. I'm confused.

For some reason, I couldn't get firmware 15 to install on the SB2 using
6.2.0. I removed 6.2.0 and reinstalled 6.1.1 and had no trouble getting
the firmware back 15. I swapped back and forth between the different
firmware revisions and slimserver software and feel 6.1.1 with revision
15 sounds the best. Maybe, I'm just hearing things but, to me, it was
pretty obvious that 6.2.0 with firmware 26 was a noticeable step
backwards.

Did you guys try both -f1 and -f2 flags (in faad - with respect to
whether the pipe at the end expects WAV of AIF)? I wonder if it's a
bigendian/littleendian (byteswap) issue. You'd get static if the
sample bytes were swapped, but that's not what's going on with the Kate
Bush problem.

 Nick.
...and changing -f 2 to -f 1 makes no difference on my set-up when
using mod aif * *, i.e.:

mov aif * *
[faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$

sounds the same as...

mov aif * *
[faad] -w -f 1 $FILE$

Yes, I did too. No difference either way.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC

2005-11-21 Thread davehg

I use a Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista 21 DAC, and have a/b'd an unmodified
SB3 against the DAC and a Pioneer Elite PD-S95 transport. I actually
bought 2 SB3's; one to modify and one to place downstairs so the wife
can listen.

I think the sound of the stock SB3 into my system is good, but not as
exceptional as the separate transport and DAC combo, which yields much
more resolution, depth, and air. Swapping the transport with the SB3
shows that the Pioneer still has an edge, but the difference is closer,
and a stock SB3 into the external DAC is really nice. I presume the
difference is probably less to do with the DAC and more to do with the
tube analog section of my Tri-Vista (plus its awesome regulated power
supply).

I am awaiting the Bolder Cable digital mod and power supply, and will
A/B the two SB3's. My experience with Bolder mods previously (using an
Art DIO)is that the power supply does make a big difference.

See my music server blog at http://musicserver.blogspot.com for details
of my current setup (Merlin TSM/REL Strata III, fed by a VAC Avatar SE,
cabled by Acoustic Zen, and AC'd by Foundation Research).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: How to patch SS code for volume control bug?

2005-11-21 Thread tass

If you've left old (newer!) files in the firmware directory, it's
probably still putting you onto the latest version. To do what you are
after, you should clean the firmware folder out first. On saying this,
though, do old firmware releases work with 6.2?

Also, you'd be best performing a blind test as things can sound better
when you think they're going to. Get someone else to swap server
randomly without you knowing which one and see if you can hear the
difference.

A little hard to do the swapping for a blind test since it's firmware
but... I did have another person listen with me to make sure I wasn't
the only one hearing differences. The other person didn't know the
firmware version... and agreed with my conclusion.

I'll have to agree that it's all up to the individual on what you hear.
I'm sure it will vary from individual to individual.
