Is this in Bugzilla anywhere? I have only witnessed this once in normal use, when I unplugged a lamp transformer from an adjacent mains socket. This lead me to suspect that a noise spike on the mains supply had disrupted the Xilinx RAM configuration somehow, and if so it's potentially an issue for CE conformity. My experience with FPGAs is predominately with antifuse technology (eg Actel), so I don't know if is this is a common Xilinx type problem. -- Patrick Dixon www.at-tunes.co.uk Patrick Dixon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=90 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21772 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 to Outlaw 990 preamp/controller?
My experience is that the SB3 sounds very good using its own DAC and analog section, but can sound even better when connected to a good outboard DAC or processor. Try it both ways and use whichever sounds best. As for the surround processing, yes! I rarely listen in stereo. If you'll be using surround, it's almost certainly better to use a digital connection from the SB3, since you can eliminate the D-to-A and A-to-D conversions which would be in play when using the analog RCA outs from the SB3. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21773 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The SqueezeBox Audiophile Solution
Many have questioned why SD doesn't market an audiophile form factor SquieezeBox - there's been much talk about this and even I was posting in the past hoping for a positive response. SD maintains they need a mass market device and yes, they have one but audiophiles have championed the 19 rack standard and so have I. At some point it becomes clear the perfect solution for SD is to sell their existing SB's in a disassembled version with long leads for the display (this minimizes any new production costs and offers audiophiles just what they need a DIY SueezeBox Installation kit). I've attached some photos of my SB2 installation which involved purchasing a 2U rack panel, (1) rack shelf for the SB components, measuring the display cutout requirements and having a machinist laser cut the hole and score the panel. Not even a days work! BTW the SB is behind the top rack panel under the Monster Power conditioner. For those of you who absolutely don't want to open the SB up to remote the display you can simply sit the SB behind the panel (requires making very accurate measurements for height and width including those rubber feet). Your choice of filters should take into consideration the exiting SB filter and your lighting environment. I think you'll agree this is a solution even an audiophile will love. Next up - many of you have complained about the SB remote. We should keep in mind this is a network device which means if you really want to talk about a comprehensive solution purchase a Bluetooth PDA (i.e. Palm LifeDrive), Salling Clicker (remote client) with SlimServer and the SB - you'll be able to do nice things like everything from the PDA without needing line-of-sight to talk to the SB. You'll also be able to control lights w/Indigo, iDVD, iTunes, iPhoto and the whole freakin world. Once we put into perspective the SB firmware is updatable, the software is Open Source and they still use screws to hold the SB together we can do just about whatever we want.. Here are my assesments: The SB3's bass performance has indeed been enhanced. I find bass much more tuneful, tighter. Very musical. Midrange performance is comparable to my earlier supply. Buttery smooth with very convincing portrayal of female vocals. Nice texture around percussive instruments. Highs are extended but not fatiguing at all. You only find high-end extension on recordings that have it. The subtle sound of triangles are nicely reproduced. The depth on the first part of Andreas Vollenweider's Caverna Magica was realistically reproduced. I have found the SB3 is now less forgiving of bad recordings. If the recording has faults they will be evident on the SB3. On the same token, high bitrate MP3s of good recordings still sound decent. In all, a worthwhile upgrade to the stock switcher. Switch between them. If you can't hear any difference, unhook the coax and listen to the optical. Can you now hear any difference compared to before? If yes, go with the optical! If no, go with the optical anyway! If, on the other hand, you could actually hear a difference when both coax and optical were connected at the same time, then you have to choose based on comparing optical (with disconnected coax!), to coax. Why all this strange reasoning? Well, I've come to the conclusion that at least in my system the act of connecting the SB to the DAC galvanically (electrically) makes a bigger difference to the sound than the actual path the digital information takes! However, I also noted that it seems like Slimdevices had then introduce a Preamp volume control function that will help to lower the risk, please correct me if I'm wrong. I had white noise through the digital output. The preamp volume was already developed by then, but it does not affect the digital outputs. So the preamp volume control did not stop the noise. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21772 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 to Outlaw 990 preamp/controller?
Pale Blue, May I ask what surround processor you use? I'd like to find one with audio-only, don't need video switching or processing since my video sources would go direct to the TV. So far the only audio only ones I've found are very expensive. Pale Blue Ego Wrote: My experience is that the SB3 sounds very good using its own DAC and analog section, but can sound even better when connected to a good outboard DAC or processor. -- dmsmit1 dmsmit1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21773 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 to Outlaw 990 preamp/controller?
I'm just using a mid-fi NAD T760 receiver, which has 24bit/96kHz DACs from Crystal. I do like NAD's E.A.R.S. processing for creating 5.1 from stereo signals (Enhanced Ambient Recovery System). It creates a very natural-sounding surround spread, not like those horrid STADIUM, HALL, CLUB settings you get with ProLogic I. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21773 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 to Outlaw 990 preamp/controller?
I think the answer to this question is that it depends. I have both an HT setup and a Music setup. The DAC in my BK Ref 50 is very respectable in terms of specs. However, for music, it just doesn't sound as good as my dedicated music DAC. For music, I prefer to listen in Stereo - most of the effects just sound so artificial. So when you compare the cost of a Benchmark to an Outlaw, remember that the Outlaw does a lot more - A/V switching, DSP processing, etc. It does these things well, but it is not focused as the Benchmark is on two channel output. I would think that you are probably getting better jitter control, and better analog output from the Benchmark. You are getting more versatility from the Outlaw. So figure out where you place value. Since this is an Audiophile forum, you may find that people will sacrafice convenience for fidelity or whatever they perceive as better sound. In my case, I have done that with my SB2. YMMV. -- mamsterla mamsterla's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=469 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21773 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 uncontrolled full scale output bug - still a concern?
Dan, Can you help me to understand just one last thing, which still doesn't make sense to me. I keep reading that the volume control on SB3 is digital. If it's strictly digital, doesn't it mean when we lower the volume, the analog output voltage should remain unchanged, because all we do is changing the amplitude of the digital signal? After reading so many posts, it now seems to me that SB3 has three different volume control: (1) The volume control done via the remote is actually an analog volume control, which will change the analog output voltage from 0 to 2.1Vrms (full-scale)? (2) We can adjust the digital volume on the web interface which does not change the output voltage? (3) We can further adjust the analog volume via the preamp volume control function on the web interface, which will change the analog output voltage from 0 to 2.1Vrms? I put question marks on all the above.. because I am not sure of the answer at all. Thank you for your patience.
