[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] what happens to HiRez files inside squeezebox?
I have a squeeze box, only used fixed digital output to feed my external DAC. I fed 176.4K files, 96K files (downloaded from reference recordings, verified by reading the tags) into the squeeze box from squeeze center. these files played both through the analog output and the SPDIF output. But my external DAC displayed 44.1K. My question, does anyone know what happened to the hirez files inside the squeeze box? did it just down convert to 44.1K? Is the squeezesbox capable of higher than 44.1K data? Where would I find information on this? thanks. -- mmc mmc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20343 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69993 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

SOX is used on recent server versions but only on platforms that can support it (e.g. some NAS don't). This will downsample according a multiple of the original file rate, so 176.4 will go down to 44.1, 96 will go down to 48. SB devices can only output 24/48 max (apart from Transporter and Touch) If you are really seeing a 24/96 file going down to 44.1, that implies that SOX is not being used. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] US Amplifier advice please
I'm moving from Europe to the US, so I need to replace my amps for my squeezeboxes, I have an old Creek amp and a Rega amp (actually this amp may work, I'll see when I get there), both are British made and give great sound. Obviously I can keep my existing speakers. Are there similar audiophile manufacturers in the US? If so who are they? Check the back of your units: they may have switchable power supplies (50/60Hz; 120/240V) and all you need do is replace the power cord if it's detachable or use an adapter. Contact the companies. Maybe you can ship the units in and they will refit them for US power requirements and ship them right to your US address. Alternatively, you can probably get some sort of power adapter to convert US mains to what you need, but that seems ugly. Still may be a good idea if your anticipated stay in the US is short. All that stuff is available to some extent in the US although you may have to search around for it. Good luck. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] US Amplifier advice please
Sometimes it's only the connections of the main transformers windings that differs. Contact creek and rega about it. It is not unusual to use two 115v windings that could work either in parallel or series depending on market, not so often in large power amps but not unusual in pre amps cds or tape decks etc and smaller amps. As Apesbrain said this could be connected to a switch on the backside. But sometimes you need to open the amp and possible have a circuit diagram. Sometimes you can change the internal transformer itself (and keep the old ones if you move back ) . Small signal, stuff like CD's and preamps can fed trough 110/230 transformers . But I would no do that for a power amp , the needed transformer will be expensive and bulky ( and uggly ). If you are really lucky you can have switch mode PSU's meaning that you only have to change the cables. My DVD and preamp have 100-240V 50-60Hz PSU's. -- Mnyb No it can NOT be controlled with iTunes Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70001 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wish list...
tv69;471833 Wrote: Hi Keymaster, I guess a plugin could be created for this functionality. In addition you could also have tag info per track to convey this info so that polarity can be controlled independently and not remain locked down. The reason for this is that not all studios release their music with a polarity of zero. In many cases, some record labels, including audiophile labels release their material at a polarity of 180 degrees. And probably even more cases exist (especially with multi track recordings) where the polarity of all individual tracks is not maintained to be the same, either all tracks at zero polarity or all tracks at 180 degree polarity, and thus switching polarity may not show any improvement on these. This often happens in many cases because many external processors used in studios flip the polarity unknowingly and in the end you may not know where you are at after many levels of equalization, compression, reverb, etc... In addition, mic feeds and mic preamps could also be responsible for flipping polarity. Studio mics are typically use XLR connections and there are two standards for connections. Pin 1 is always ground, and typically pin 2 is positive and pin 3 is negative. However some studios flip pin 2 and 3 around, thus flipping polarity. As for a front panel switch, yes it could be avoided. I probably made that suggestion due to often seeing other audio components with a dedicated polarity switch. If a dedicated button or control is available on a remote that is easy to get to, then a dedicated switch on the Transporter may not be necessary. I don't know if the polarity inversion pre or post D/A would make a difference? I would guess that since all you are doing is inverting the waveform, it may not matter where in the chain it happens. It could happen downstream even in your preamp in the analog domain. Another thing that I would like to see is the format/bitdepth/frequency of the file being played on the front panel display. My mp3 player does this and it is very handy to know what you are listening to at a glance. For example FLAC/16bit/44.1kHz or mp3/192... TV I've got a studio @ home and have worked in a few as well...I get all of that (and I routinely flip phase for a number of reasons), but I wouldn't have thought it to be so prevalent an issue to warrant a phase switch on the TP...mastering engineers, I'm looking at you ;). I started out (and still have) on a Soundtracs FMP desk which is Pin3 hot (and caused me grief until I figured it out). That being said...I was trolling through the main strings.txt file in slimserver and noticed that polarity reversal is listed as an item in there. I haven't managed to find it on the unit itself, but it might very well already be there. Have a look around! I suggested flipping phase in the digital domain only because in the absence of a physical switch, it's the most likely way to pull this off with the unit that you have (plus I would think that any extra switch would be cause for audiophiles to rebel). You're talking to a guy who went and revisited the whole Beatles catalog after discovering phase; I fully respect and appreciate where you're coming from :) Cheers, have fun, and thanks for the debate!! It depends on what you are looking for but for my money the class T amps are the best bang for the buck. I have the Winsome Labs Mouse and I'm fixing to biwire\bimap them. I have the maggies MMG's - modded - The T sound is awesome. At 45 WPC its not bad. 90 is better - so I'm going to rewire the maggies to do biwire. Not a big deal since I have already replaced the wires and crossovers. I'm dragging my heals because the sucker sounds so freaking awesome now! It's just a little limited on ultra clean volume (my hearing is probably better off for it!) I'm a rocker so there is that need for volume. One other thing on the T amp thing. Very good for tweakers. At 3-400 bucks a pop you can afford to screw with it (and possibly screw it up). I shorted the mouse out more than a few times but it keep coming back for more. Replaced the jumpers and the caps.
