[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Is SB2 (or 3) a source of RF interference?
Have you tried plugging the SB3 into the same power strip/outlet that the rest of your gear is powered from? If not, that may cure it. The SB3 only uses 10-12 watts, so you can also safely plug it into powered outlets on your stereo gear (if any) Occasionally, I'll watch movies I've downloaded in AVI/WMV format via my laptop computer's video and audio outputs. I can cause an audible hum if I plug my laptop's power supply into a DIFFERENT outlet. And yes, the SB3 DOES generate some radio frequencies. It's worse when it's trying to connect to a webradio station that's offline. I know, because if I'm standing near it, my Fire Department radio belt pager starts broadcasting static noise. But it's not low frequency at all. And for that matter, my SB3 sits directly atop my McIntosh 2205 power amplifier. I've never heard any hum or any extraneous noise on my system as a result of the SB3 being connected (except the dreaded White Noise of Death, but that's something else entirely) -- Cleve McIntosh MX-132 preamp/tuner McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MC7100 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers (front and center) Klipsch CF-3 speakers (surrounds) Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22274 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Calling all audiophiles - Uncompressed or lossless?
To play Devil's advocate for a moment (and I've been converting all my CDs to FLAC, so I'm not anti-FLAC) Here's a review of the McIntosh MS300 music server. The MS300 would certainly seem potentially to outperform the Squeezebox in all possible parameters, especially our home-brew ripping/encoding on our PCs with EAC, Flac, Itunes, or whatever After all, the SB3 is $300 - and I'm using an old Gateway Athlon 650 as my ripper/encoder with freeware doing the tasks. The MS300 couldn't possibly make worse FLAC copies - in all likelyhood, superior. http://ultimateavmag.com/mediaservers/1105mcintosh/index1.html Yet on page two, the reviewer claims he can definitely hear a difference between FLAC and the original CD. He said the FLAC sounds duller, flater than the original CD. I guess I really need to make some FLACS and AIFF/WAV files and do some intense comparisons, to see if I can hear what this reviewer is hearing. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21700 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

No serious audio company need worry about this. The same people that buy these units probably think there's no need to buy CDs for $11.99 when they can buy an album of 128 kbps AAC files from the Itunes store. I purchased a song from the Itunes store today - just to test - it's only 128 kpbs and sub-par sonic quality. Ok for a portable radio or computer, but inadequate for home audio. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21595 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC
I could not hear any tangible difference between the analog outputs of the SB3 and running coaxial cable into the digital input on my Proton (privately labeled as Dynaco) 5.1 home theater integrated amp. It wasn't a terribly expensive amplifier - I bought it on Ebay at a closeout price over 3 years ago. Two weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to upgrade to a McIntosh MX-132 preamp/tuner. I've A/B'd the same source material numerous times, using the McIntosh decoders and the SB3s analog output. My conclusions? The SB3 sounds good. The McIntosh DAC sounds decidedly different, and in my opinion, better. Using the Mac's DAC, there's more space around instruments, a sense of ambience, is the best I can describe it. It's easy to hear - an opening of the sound stage. Also, strings and piano music sound less strained, sweeter and less harsh. Everything sounds more musical. Even on 128 kbps internet radio streams. I made sure that loudness, and tone controls were defeated for the test, so that I was making an equal comparison. I was pleasantly surprised - I honestly thought I wouldn't hear any difference and went into the comparison very skeptical. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17948 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I am using the analog outputs with full volume (40 on the display). I regulate the volume at the receiver. No issues thus far. I think the internal DAC and analog stage are very good for the price. They are superior to a 1998 vintage Rega Planet I used to have. That player retailed for $800 and it was Stereophile's component of the year, IIRC. It's true, ripped music using FLAC sounds less digital to my ears. Discs that used to be harsh sound so much better! That's a good strategy - if you regulate the volume with the receiver or amp, you won't have any worries. It's only if you turn the gain up on the pre-amp or amplifier in order to use the Squeezebox's remote controlled volume, that the documented issue with the White Noise of Death could be a potential speaker killer. And yeah, properly done FLAC sounds great - this is a cheap way of doing the same basic thing that McIntosh's Music Server 300 does. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm busily copying CDs to *.wav files via EAC. I used the settings for EAC recommended at the Hydrogenaudio website. Question(s) about FLAC - I haven't been able to find any suggestions on what settings to use with it. The FLAC website doesn't seem to explain much about the GUI or the various settings, surprisingly. For example, what level of encoding do I want to use (it defaults to Level 6) Should I check or uncheck replay gain (and what does it do anyways?) I have Verify, and Add Tags checked. Replay Gain, Align on Sector Boundaries, and Cuesheet are unchecked. Ogg-Flac and Decode through Errors are both unchecked. Poor tech support is poor tech support, regardless of what part of the globe it originates from. However, couple poor support with a poor grasp of the English language, and a resultant difficulty in comprehending what the tech is saying, as I've personally encountered in some tech 'support' hotlines, and it's especially vexing. And I won't even get into my own personal opines on all this 'outsourcing'. Regardless, I think 'The Simpsons' is leaps and bounds more 'racist' than anything that poor Scott wrote. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Quick question: CD's per hard drive
Since my earliest experiences with MP3, I tend to veer away from any compression schemes. However, I never thought that FLAC hurt the sound, nor did I say so. - McIntosh wouldn't use it for their Music Server if it did. However, I thought it primarily a benefit for those with VERY large music collections, more than a few hundred CDs, and trying to keep the collection on a single HDD. With the cost per gigabyte of storage keeps on getting lower, and lower, I couldn't see any need to tie up CPU resources and my time on an encoding scheme, when I have ample. How often do FLAC users encounter errors with FLAC files? What's a typical error rate? 1 out of 50? 1 out of 100? 1 out of 1000? If I was getting significant data corruption on my HDD, I'd think I'd encounter other serious and profound system errors besides just issues with AIFF files. In other words, incipient HDD failure. And is there really a sound quality difference in generating AIFF files with Itunes, vs. EAC or other software? -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18552 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Something I wouldn't have been able to do with WAV's unless I'd kept a seperate checksum/SFV file, and that would have been a lot of trouble seeing as many had been renamed and moved to different folders since the initial rip. Assuming you wish to maintain perfect audio fidelity, 500-700 Mb for an uncompressed AIFF or WAV file depending on the length of an album. At an average of 600 Mb, your 300 Gb drive would hold a whopping 500 albums. That's without even messing with FLAC or other lossless compressions. With FLAC, the number increases to 800 albums or so. But storage so dirt cheap these days, and it being so easy to slave HDDs, or add additional HDDs, I don't know why anyone would mess with FLAC or other lossless compressions unless they're just plain into codecs. I've been slowly ripping all my albums to AIFF files via Itunes - I've got 61 albums so far on my hard drive, and the folder size is only 32 Gb. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18552 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
