[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] WMA lossless vs EAC

2006-12-05 Thread Coffee

Is there a big difference in sound quality between WMA lossless produced
by Windows Media Player and WAV files produced by EAC? WAV files don't
have song info (or at least that's what I see) so I can't browse by
album or date, etc.

I read the EAC doc and the biggest thing about it seems to be the
so-called 'jitter'. But with modern PCs is that still that much of an
issue? Maybe many modern DVD drives have enough memory that a whole
track can be sucked into memory before the drive have to pause. Or
enough overlap can be read so that a large segment can be used to
stitch the parts together.

(Can someone tell me how to quote a previous message?)

'ezkcdude': you mentioned doing a DBT to confirm if the differences are
real. I notice that you list MIT cables as part of your equipment. Have
you done DBT tests with the MIT cables and confirm that they indeed
give you a different sound?

Oh, and to answer your parenthetical, just hit the Quote button. You
 can quote me on that.

Understood. That's why I was careful not to say 'better', but
'different'.

I'm not trying to provoke anybody. As an electrical engineer (but not
one who specializes in audio equipment, few are) I have always wondered
what any engineer can possibly do to a cable to make it transmit audio
frequency signals better, other than reducing the resistance and
increasing the capacitance. It is possible, I suppose, that there are
some phenomena that scientists have not figured out yet. So I am
perfectly willing to accept the possibility that super expensive cables
do sound different ('better' is subjective, 'different' is objective and
can be proven). Since you seem to believe in DBT tests, I was hoping you
can shed some light on this mystery.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] PSU for SB?

2006-11-03 Thread Coffee

I noticed that many users are using a PSU with an SB3 and an external
DAC. If the DAC is a good one (that resamples the input digital
signal), why would a PSU to the SB3 make any difference? It's all
digital. I've never heard of anyone adding a PSU to a computer to make
it more 'accurate'!

According to the reference [10] quoted by the 'tnt' article:

http://www.epanorama.net/documents/audio/spdif.html

Small jitter D/A conversion is implemented by using separate PLL
clocks for data recover and DAC and by using a buffering between data
recovery and DAC.

Which makes sense. The SPDIF signals represent each bit by 2 edge
transitions. The original sampling frequency is known (44.1 kHz).
Therefore, by buffering the incoming bits a good DAC can eliminate all
the jitter introduced in the previous stages, regardless of the origin
of the jitter. I can understand that a good power supply is important
for the DAC itself, so that it doesn't generate its own jitter. But I
don't see why the power supply to the digital sections need to be so
perfect.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thanks

2006-11-02 Thread Coffee

I just want to thank the folks in this forum who have helped me be
finally at peace with what I like or believe. Ever since the invention
of the CD-ROM I have been bothered by the claims of the effects of CD
'errors.' The appearance of SqueezeBox should put (but didn't) an end
to such claims. Through the advices I get from this forum I discovered
the Audio Critic and other interesting 'non-mainstream' opinions. I
find the article

http://www.bostonaudiosociety.org/bas_speaker/abx_testing2.htm

particulary informative. I understand that 'subjectivity' is a
sensitive topic in the audiophile world. I'm not trying to start the
same hostile debate for the millionth time. I just want to share my
positive experience with other wannabe audiophiles who more or less
rely on the experience of experts. It just feels good to know that
there are 'experts' on either side of the debate.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3+DAC vs Transporter

2006-10-28 Thread Coffee

The cost of the TP is not a real problem. I just want to make a decision
that I won't regret later. I'm not a true audiophile (my ears just
aren't that good) and I tend to keep my stuff for a long time. I'm
still using my Denon CD player from over 10 years ago. It cost over
$1000 at that time. So $1700 with today's dollar is a bargain if the TP
indeed is as good as many (practically all) of you say. It is true that
perhaps the remote volume control alone is worth the extra $400
(surprising that no other DAC in this price range has this simple
feature).

I was, and still am, a little skeptical about the audiophile quality of
a Slim Devices product. The SB is a proven and revolutionary device but
that only proves that SD is a great high tech company. It seems
unlikely, although definitely not impossible, that SD can create a DAC
that is superior to companies that have been doing this kind of stuff
for decades. But from the testimonials posted so far, apparently SD has
indeed succeeded in doing so.

So I guess I'll bite the bullet and contribute my $2000 to celebrate
SD's success!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3+DAC vs Transporter

2006-10-27 Thread Coffee

I'm a new member and I'm trying to decide whether to buy an SB3 and a
DAC or a Transporter. Even with the free SB3 special, the Transporter
still costs $1700. I can buy a PS Audio or Musical Fidelity DAC for
about $1000. So the SB3+DAC combo is still $400 cheaper. The
Transporter is no doubt a high quality piece of equipment, but so is
Musical Fidelity stuff. In any case, the digital side is high-tech and
will change rapidly, whereas the analog side hasn't and probably will
not change significantly for a long time to come. With a separate DAC,
I can junk the SB3 when something better comes up (like better wireless
networking). Seems to make perfect sense to me.

I have searched this forum and cannot find this question raised
previously. Is my logic flawed in some way?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3+DAC vs Transporter

2006-10-27 Thread Coffee

Thanks for the in-depth reply, HighDudgeon, especially your comparison
tests. I will certainly do some research on the Lavry and Benchmark.

The cost figures are not quite right, though. For $2000 and the special
offer, I can get a Transporter and an SB3. So I get 2 systems, one
excellent and one decent. Or I can get an SB3+DAC combo costing $1300,
plus another SB3 costing $300. Again 2 systems. The total for that is
$1600, as you said. But the difference is $400, not $100. Of course, if
I dither some more the Transporter special will be over and I'll be
looking at a $700 difference!
