Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] "Too loud", "too quiet" opinions: what are the factors?
I've never found ReplayGain to really do an adequate job of adjusting volume so that I never had to adjust the volume of music playing randomly. Older CDs, especially, before the loudness wars and the massive compression employed in later releases, are still noticeably quieter. IMO, the only way to "fix" the problem would be to employ some kind of additional compression during the music playback, like they do with radio station broadcasts. Or perhaps there could be some kind of pre-processing you could that would modify the audio files in the library and accomplish the same thing. I just tested this on my system and it works OK. Playing to a Transporter, firmware 87, with LMS 7.9. In Settings Advanced Logging I set '(player.source) - Player Source Audio Conversion Logging' to Info. In the server.log I see the following lines (search for the word 'Tokenized') Code: [15-01-12 06:30:12.2430] Slim::Player::Song::open (558) Tokenized command: C:\Program Files (x86)\Logitech Media Server 7.9 Test\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\flac.exe -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 -- D:\Audio - Test\AIFF\Ray Anderson\Blues Bred in the Bone\01 Blues Bred In The Bone.aif | C:\Program Files (x86)\Logitech Media Server 7.9 Test\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\sox.exe -q -t flac - -t flac -C 0 - | [15-01-12 06:32:43.2845] Slim::Player::Song::open (558) Tokenized command: C:\Program Files (x86)\Logitech Media Server 7.9 Test\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\flac.exe -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 -- D:\Audio - Test\AIFF\Red Hot Chili Peppers\Freaky Styley [24-192]\01 Jungle Man.aif | C:\Program Files (x86)\Logitech Media Server 7.9 Test\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\sox.exe -q -t flac - -t flac -C 0 -r 96000 - | The first entry is playing a standard redbook CD track at 16/44.1. You can see that the AIFF file is streamed to the Transporter as FLAC. The second entry is playing a 24/192 file. It too gets streamed as FLAC, but it's resampled at 96k. Did you by any chance disable the default conversion of AIFF to FLAC in Settings Advanced File Types? Ok. I see the same thing if I disable the streaming of AIFF as FLAC in the file settings. The 16/44.1 file plays fine, but the 24/192 file generates an 'Unsupported sample-rate' error. If you really must stream AIFF natively, there may be a way to tackle the problem by using custom-convert.conf, but I'm not sure. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Hires AIFF files greater than 24/96, best way to playback on Transporter?
I actually played with this for several hours today, but couldn't get it to work correctly for the hi-res AIFF files. I was testing with a 24/192 album from hdtracks (I used dbpoweramp to transcode the FLAC from hdtracks into AIFF), as well as a small library of 16/44.1 AIFF. Invariably, if I got the 24/192 file to play something other than white noise, it played at what sounded like 1/2 speed (also very tubby sounding, with loud bass). This was using rules placed in custom-convert.conf (which needs to be located in the same folder as convert.conf). No need to modify convert.conf. If a rule exists in both convert.conf and custom-convert.conf, the one in custom-convert.conf will override the former. The standard rule for AIFF is just: Code: aif aif * * - Which means do nothing to the stream, although I think the server may strip the header from of the AIFF file before streaming. The reason LMS refuses to use the rule for hi-res is that it knows the Transporter can't handle 24/192 and there needs to be means of resampling in the rule. Since there isn't one, it just doesn't play the file. So I tried variations on rules like this: Code: aif aif * * # FD:{RESAMPLE=-r %d} [sox] -q -t aif $FILE$ -t raw $RESAMPLE$ -c 2 -s -B - This transcodes AIFF to what is essentially AIFF without the header. The -B keeps it big-endian, which AIFF uses. If you use AIFF output (-t aif instead of -t raw) then you hear a tick at the start of every file, as the player attempts to play the header as part of the music stream. The -t arguments to SoX tell it what kind of input file to expect, and what type of file to produce as output. It's capable of processing and transcoding many different audio formats. The input designation may not strictly be necessary here, as SoX can usually figure out the input file type from the file's headers. Code: -q: quiet mode -t aif: the input audio is AIFF $FILE$: full path of the input file -t raw: produce a headerless raw data stream as output $RESAMPE$ : expanded resample rule from the line above (should end up being -r 96000 when playing the 24/192 file) -c 2 : produce 2 channel output -s: use signed-integer encoding -B: output big-endian byte-order - : send the output to stdout, which is what LMS expects Run sox --help to get a full usage explanation. You _can_ set up a PCM rule in custom-convert.conf and then force it to be used on the file types settings page. But the only difference with PCM and what is shown above, is the endianness of the data, as PCM use little-endian encoding (like WAV does). I get *exactly* the same results here as with the above. It plays 16/44.1, but 24/192 plays slow. Code: aif pcm * * # FD:{RESAMPLE=-r %d} [sox] -q -t aif $FILE$ -t raw $RESAMPLE$ -c 2 -s -L - In the end, I think the playback speed problem has to do with transcoding from a 24 bit source. I'm not sure where the bug is, though. It may have to do with the fact we're sending a headerless stream to the Transporter, and that it assumes it's 16 bit audio. It may be that doing pretty much the same resampling and streaming the audio as FLAC is understood by the Transporter because it reads the proper audio information in the FLAC headers that it receives. I'm also not sure what exactly the point would be of encoding them both at 24/96 when many people think that the 96 kHz encoding itself is detrimental to sound quality. That includes many audiophiles who prefer 44.1 kHz. Good luck with this test. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Clowntime is NOT over
This isn't new. It goes back years. There have been many people who claim to hear a difference in sound quality between playing WAV and FLAC files. Has nothing to do with the concept of lossy compression. There are a number of theories as to why there may be a difference. Could be noise caused by the CPU processing required to decode FLAC, or it could have to do with the file structure of FLAC, which requires a lot of memory manipulation to deal with frames and blocks and reconstructing the stream into a simple stream of stereo PCM samples. It's also been postulated that with a networked streaming player there is very little difference, or even that FLAC can sound better. Streaming WAV requires no CPU processing to decode the data, but it requires more processing to handle the additional data coming in through the network connection. The tradeoff may favor FLAC. This phenomenon isn't at all unique to vinyl collecting or high end audio. You see the same thing in a thousand other hobbies. When I was a kid, you went deer hunting with a shotgun and slugs, or an old 30-30 lever action. Now, you have guys who own five custom made deer rifles, a couple of elk rifles, antelope rifles, etc. Guys no longer drive two hours to a cabin in the Pennsyvania woods that their family has owned for generations - they fly to Montana and pay $5000 for a guided elk hunt. And we're not talking about the moneyed rich. These are the same blue collar workers, shoe salesmen and school teachers who years ago wouldn't spend more than $5.00 on a box of ammo each fall. Each time something played the main display on the Transporter instantly went blank, while the right-hand display stayed on, but the power meters remained idle. Tried power cycling the Transporter, restarting the server, restarting the wireless router, did a Xilinx reprogram on the Transporter. Only a factory reset of the Transporter fixed it. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best server for Transporter
How much storage space do you need? I ask because if you get a tiny nettop type system then you may be forced to use an external hard drive (or drives). That's not a terrible thing, but the extra cabling and wall wart can be messy and it somewhat defeats the purpose of using such a small box for the computer itself. If you need a lot of storage space then it means you'll have to use 3.5 drives, since 2.5 drives (which are quieter, cooler, a little more expensive) are currently limited to 1 TB in size (about 2800-3000 CDs encoded in FLAC). If you do need one or more 3.5 drives then IMO it's best to get a case that can hold them internally. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transcode and upsample at once?
I doubt that this is doable within the transcoding framework. It just wasn't designed with that sort of flexibility in mind. One thing I do know is that you don't want the output type in SoX to be WAV if PCM is the target. You need to use the output type 'raw' in SoX, as the Squeezebox will be expecting a headerless stream. With type WAV you're probably hearing a click at the beginning of each track, which is the WAV header being played. stop-spinning;695504 Wrote: I am interested in how the wireless protocol works with a Squeezebox Touch (or Duet I guess for that matter)? There is no 'wireless' protocol. The streaming protocol over the network is the same for both wired and wireless connections. I noticed when I used one some while back that there was a large buffer in the Duet - when I disconnected the wireless link to the computer - the Duet was playing for about 15 or so seconds afterwards - which seem to be a decent size buffer. Right, but the length of time the audio will play from the buffer will depend on the degree of compression of the data. It might be 15 seconds for WAV (PCM), or it might be a couple of minutes for MP3 at some low bitrate. So I just wondered - when playing music initiated from the Personal Computer, there is a slight delay before starting - so does music first get 'copied' to the Squeezebox over the wireless network - then once copied (which should be perfect if using TCP/IP and CRC checksums)- it then actually gets played from the copy on the SB itself? The buffer is prefilled to some degree (I think measured in bytes) before playback will begin. The faster the server and the network, the quicker this happens. And why a faster network connection (such as wired 100 Mbps ethernet) will be more reliable. If there's a network or server interruption, the faster network allows the buffer to refill more quickly and avoid underruns. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94101 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best option for an outdoor music system
If the patio is covered is there a need for outdoor speakers? I think I'd mix it down to mono as well for that setup. Nobody is likely to hear much of a stereo image and anyone sitting close to one of the speakers isn't going to hear all of the music. There was a recent thread that discussed how this can be done in Squeezebox Server itself by using SoX to do the mono mixing. Pretty simple, and easily disabled to go back to stereo, so you could wire the speakers LRLR and then experiment. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=657427#post657427 -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90459 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Teflon tape
Isn't Teflon (PTFE) a very good electrical insulator? Sounds like the very last thing you'd want to wind around the prongs making an electrical connection. I have no doubt that it makes the physical connection feel tighter, but you can only be reducing and compromising the actual contact area, not increasing it. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89174 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Looks like it's dependent on the song being played. I have an older album that's noticeably quieter than just about anything else in my library. Ry Cooder's 'Bop Till You Drop' has an album ReplayGain of +6.79dB. While playing, the Touch's meters never hit -7dB. Then there's the Flobots' 2010 album 'Survival Story', with an album ReplayGain of -9.61dB. The meters go past +1dB. Loudness wars. SP must simply map the numeric values of samples to positions on the meter. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87317 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

That's just an input selector, but you could always do both a Xilinx and a factory reset to get the player back to its virgin state. This will take two power ups and you'll have to reenter your wireless password after doing the factory reset. Xilinx reset: Press and hold 1 on the remote while applying power to the Transporter. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is a Transporter SE?
I certainly wouldn't miss either the knob or the second VFD. I have the second VFD turned off on mine, an if I were experiencing the degaussing noise that others have reported I'd open up the Transporter and disconnect the knob entirely. A Boom knob would not only have been fine, but better, IMO. Not only would it not have needed the degaussing weirdness, it has a much better feel to it than the transnav thing. (But remember that the Boom came after the Transporter, so there was no way to know it at the time.) Still, I doubt that I would ever use it. I certainly can't imagine Logitech investing anything in refitting the design to use a different knob when they know most people don't use it. My guess is that they're just trying to clear out some leftover parts by selling Transporters without knobs. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84281 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is a Transporter SE?
The comments in this thread hint at exactly why it's unlikely there will be any more Squeezeboxes. I'd like video streaming, I'd like no screen, I'd like an internal amp, I'd like AM/FM, I'd like a nicer case, I'd like internal disk drives. Customers don't know where Squeezebox goes next, so Logitech sure as hell doesn't. That's why Logitech sells a product like the Radio and why it's undoubtedly the biggest selling Squeezebox ever - it's a lowest common denominator product, both in price point and audience. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Popping noises with Transporter firmware 81 and 85
The big change to firmware 81 was moving the scrolling of text to the player, so it could account for greater CPU usage. Apparently the Transporter is borderline when playing 96kHz Flac, so any small change could push it over the top. I'm not sure whether the scrolling changes should affect it if you're using the Music Information Screensaver, but maybe the plugin doesn't play nice with the new approach to scrolling. Try disabling the plugin first. If that doesn't help you might then go to the Transporter's display settings (using the web interface) and change the scrolling rate. Increase the scroll pixels to 7 and decrease the scroll rate (by increasing the value) to 0.15. I think those were the old defaults. In any case, adjust the scroll rate until the speed looks correct. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84133 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
