[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Volume settings
I am using a SB3 - Lavry DA10 - Integrated Amp. Now what settings do you people, who use a setup like mine, in terms of volume settings ? I recall seeing people seem to have it at max in the SB ? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Volume settings
Correct, it's an integrated amp. I connect the SB3 to the lavry with a toslink. I have set the volume setting in the SB3 to MAX ( 100 ) and the lavry to 40. Do you mean I should max the lavry too ? Eric Carroll;182012 Wrote: Given you have an integrated amp, you have a volume control. I assume you have the SB3 connected digitally to the DAC... The consensus is that you should preferentially use the analog volume control if possible. This means setting SB3 to full volume on the digital output side. Similarly on the DAC side, have it output at a constant (full) line level. Then use the integrated amp volume control to actually set the volume. This will preserve dynamic range through the digital chain. If you find that your full line level is not properly matched to the integrated amp, and you have to set the integrated amp volume control too low, you can add attenuation between the DAC and the integrated amp. The benefit of adding fixed attentuation in front of the integrated amp is that the noise floor will get reduced as well as the signal, preserving SNR, instead of decreasing the DAC volume, which reduces signal but not noise, thus decreasing SNR. -- thingfish thingfish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9126 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32929 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Volume settings
I can change the voulme on the amp with remote so that works fine, thank you. Setting the lavry much higher than around 40 seem to be to high though but at 40 its ok so I leave it around there. Another question ( sorry ). What is the difference, if any, in setting the volume to digital output level is fixed in the webinterface and just set it to 100 in the player itself ? Eric Carroll;182032 Wrote: I am not very familiar with the Lavry, so I am assuming here its volume control is in the digital domain and not analog. Assuming its volume is digital, yes, I would suggest maxing the DAC volume too and use the integrated amp control. The rationale is if you have an integrated amp, then do all volume control on the integrated amp, as this influences both the noise floor and the signal at the same time, while digital domain volume changes impact only the signal and thus may negatively impact SNR depending on the details of the DAC and how low you go on the volume control. If you can't change the integrated amp remotely, you can compromise by setting the integrated amp high enough and using the digital volume control only for regular listening needs, but try to keep it 20dB of full scale. -- thingfish thingfish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9126 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32929 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Balanced output/input what is the deal ?
Ben, As per the lavry manual it says Note: Most XLR cable adaptors (such as a cable with XLR Female and a ¼ inch MONO plug) work correctly as Balanced to Unbalanced converters. Does that mean that I can leave the lavry on default , that is balanced, and have the cable convert the signal ? Do I understand that correct ? Also, can I harm the equipment by not chaning the jumpers on the Lavry leaving it in balanced mode with my amp ? Ben Diss;180200 Wrote: You are losing a -potential- benefit. In your setup it might make not make a difference. XLR shields against noise by using a third wire. This wire carries the signal inverted. On the receiving end, the inverted signal is swapped back and added to the non inverted signal canceling out any noise introduced in transmission. RCA can block noise through good shielding but it's a lot harder and results vary wildly. Both types of cables can still affect the sound through different levels of resistance, capacitance, inductance, etc. If you're going to use an XLR-RCA interconnect be sure and open the Lavry and swap the jumper to get the signal levels right. Also be sure you get the pinouts right when you buy the cables. -Ben -- thingfish thingfish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9126 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32699 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A Question for those who know something about burn in...
Everything in the universe is subject to change in one way or another ( well almost everything ) but when it comes to hifi equipment I just dont see how a change would improve anything, if there is one, it should be a negative change if anything , as in a degredation of the curcuits. Burning in of cables is even more strange ... how could a digital cable for example possible sounds warmer, wider or whatever with time ? it is passing bits .. 1's and 0's ... they dont get wider och warmer. They are what they are. If a system sound shitty today it will most likely sound as shity tomorrow. I might be wrong of course. I think your theory is dead on to be honest. cliveb;164218 Wrote: As you mentioned in your initial posting, you have noticed that there is no consensus of opinion around here. So let me throw in my own thoughts. 1. Amplifiers. The best preamp possible is no preamp at all. If the Squeezebox is going to be your only source, go with just a power amp, and use the Squeezebox's volume control to adjust listening levels. If you do this, then you may need some way of limiting the maximum volume possible. If you also get the Lavry, then you can use its volume control to set the maximum level. If not, then you might need to get some passive attenuators. 2. Regarding your choice of speakers. Are you really fixed on these? It's possible that if you combined the money you would spend on these speakers plus the Lavry, you might be able to get much better speakers, which would result in better sound quality, even when using the Squeezebox DAC (which is pretty good in any case). You mention that the Stridbeck speakers are very neutral, without any character of their own, so my guess would be that you might like active professional studio monitors (which have their own built-in power amps). These kind of speakers are typically much cheaper than HiFi speakers for the same sound quality. (The downside is that they are not nearly as good-looking). Thanks for your input. About the Lavry, I will buy it either way because of the price I can get it for which means I can try it at no finacial risk really. If I dont need it I will just sell it. I havenät found a place that let me sample it at home so this is just another way of doing that. I haven't thought abobut that kind of spekars yet but it makes sense since I like that clean quality. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile virgin asking for help/advice.
I have spent some time reading posts in this forum and its been very interesting. Time then to participate ! I am looking for a substitute for my CD which decided to leave this earth a while back. I am also tired of the CD medium itself and strongly believe that doing away with it is the way to go. So in my quest I stumbled upon this little thing, the SqueezeBox, and from what I can see it looks like the one for me! I have some questions though and most have probably been asked before but I was never one to claim to be unique :) Like I said my CD died but I should add that I don't have any speakers either ATM or an amp, the reason for this is I just moved from another country and couldn't be arsed to bring things like that with me. They were not good anyway. So basically I don't have nothing ATM, I am a white canvas for you people to paint your master pieces on :) First question: I know what kind of speakers I want already ( Handmade Swedish speakers made by Stridbeck ) but about the amp I just need some suggestions. This is the Audiophiles I know I know but I am not spending a fortune on this stuff. So cheap and very good .. shouldn't be that hard for you right ? :) I mean that is what the SB is after all ... or so they say. Must be others. I will use lossless format in one way or another and the SB as transport. Now I have read X number or threads about the SQ of the SB as is, and with mods, with external Dac's etc and AFAIK there is not a unified answer. Not surprisingly since it is all very subjective. But given my setup, which will consist of decent speakers ( to me anyway ) and a probably not so decent amp ( to you ) would I benefit at all from a Dac or is that just me craving the extra gear ? Squeezebox -- Amp -- Speakers Squeezebox -- Dac -- Amp -- Speakers I don't care AT ALL about how these things look as I will hide them anyway. I am not anal about sound quality, meaning I will not run around with db instruments measuring sound waves ... I am however anal ENOUGH to want as good a sound as I can get, for the money I can afford. So question 2: Would you advice me to just buy the SB first and try it out and wait with external Dac's until AFTER I have tried it in my system ? All logic tells me this is the thing to do but logic and me, well, we haven't spoken much lately. I have this one time chance to get a Lavry DA10 for a very good price and should I decide later I hate it or whatever I am certain I can sell it and even make money off of it. Thoughts ? Finally let me apologize for such a horrific first post. They say first impressions last so whatever goofy impression I made with this post I guess I only have myself to blame. I am no wiz when it comes to audio lingo and so I can not describe what makes these speakers good in that sense.
