Shazam became pretty bloated as Android app. I find the google sound
search app as widget very practical without the need of starting a big
app.

Shazam is extremely usefull when you hear Tune in pulic and wonder wtf
is that :)

Inside LMS i use the "what was that Tune " plugin , this is good when
smartmix plugin injects stuff from Spotify you never heard.

And they return the versions that have paid Amazon's or Apple's

I would like discrete surround .

DSD was never a good idea not even in the 90's you can do equally good
with PCM and PCM can be used for processing like mixing and in the end
users system for room correction volume DSP crossovers etc .

DSD only works in the antique paradigm of DAC to analog

I, for one, only have two ears. :)

So headphones with acoustic 3D encoding per user is what you need.
Multi-speaker setups help present a realistic sound stage when there's
more than one person doing the listening however. Reminds me, must go
listen to those music DVDs I never listened to before...

Right - that is a curse that will probably stay with us for ever - silly

Yes, in LMS it's not a problem at all. I use RG on PCM and not on DTS or
AC-3 and life is good. I was just commenting that I'd be irked if Roon
calculated RG on that material with no ability to turn it off.

Maybe this is another one of those audiophile things where No Serious

I don't really care one way or the other about DSD, I just like discrete
surround music and much of that is only available as DSD. It's on my
mind more at the moment because I'm ripping my SACDs via one of the
naughty methods that technically isn't supposed to exist. Since LMS can
convert it to PCM on the fly, I'm leaving it as DSD. LMS can't deal with
the surround DSD, of course, but Foobar2000 can convert even the 5.1 to
PCM on the fly.

I didn't disagree. Just pointing out that squeezebox wasn't cheap enough
to be a no brainer for anyone when it came out, and like many things to
not really take off in their lifetime it's only really thriving now
because the hardware got cheaper, used. A second life, if you like.

I have to say though I don't think any one hardware component is the
future of music for the masses. (Other than the smartphone.) There will
be no ubiquitous Squeezebox Touch 2. More likely an app that ties a
bunch of existing tech together.

fixes it for LMS where you can turn of this completely.

I suppose you can in roon ,some of that crowd is very picky about
bit-perfect in the usual audiophile way ( they think the sound will be
severely broken if not bit perfect ).

But what does roon in depth scanning assign for volume level on a
dts/ac3 file wrapped in flac or wav ? It's just noise .
It's also used to generate cute vase forms in th UI ?

>From what I can gather LMS is one of the few music streaming systems
that even attempts to manage one's music library, most of the other
music streaming devices simply rely on third party music library
management or brain dead mobile apps. While those "solutions" may be
okay for the average user with a relatively small music collections
(maybe a couple of hundred albums) for large music collections these
solutions are pretty much useless, hence the need for software like
Roon.

As for "automatic" ripping and tagging - no thank you since these rely
on the information available on the internet, which is very often
incorrect or at least not the way one may prefer. Since I carefully tag
or retag all music in my library I don't want some app retagging my
music with incorrect information.

It's more slick, less featured, and more expensive. Roon i dont know

It's been well over 10 years since the original Squeezebox was
introduced and so far other than online music streaming services no one
has been come up with a music streaming system for use in one's home
that functions any better than the Squeezebox system. Right now it would
appear that Roon may evolve into a workable alternative to LMS but not
any of those DLNA based systems. Logitech, not knowing quite how far
ahead of its time LMS was and still remains, most definitely dropped the
ball when they killed the Squeezebox line.

Giving away the software was in hindsight perhaps a mistake but imo they
did so because they thought that very few people would pay for software
that was (and to an extent still is) difficult to install and configure
if you aren't IT literate to start with. If you follow the posts on
these forums (which I know you do) you still see people popping up
saying they are using 7.7.x and haven't a clue about where to find 7.9
or how to install it. Those people bought in because of their love of
music and all credit to SlimDevices/Logitech what they bought has pretty
much worked without issue for a decade.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Our Music Listening... in 10 years.

2017-02-08 Thread drmatt

My guess, in ten years time.

I suspect those that care about quality (an ever dwindling audience)
will continue to hoard media and their own fileset. The rest of the
world will realise that iTunes or Spotify or tidal is good enough and
the stream (aka personal radio station) will become the norm. end points
will all be IP based and actually I think individual phones will be the
player source, via either Bluetooth or airplay or some as-yet-undefined
media playback system. It's perfect: you sit in your car listening to
cached streams on your phone, you get home and the same stream picks up
again onto your house system, following you from room to room
automatically. Almost all devices will have built-in endpoints anyway.
There will be NO room for differentiation of products because it will
all be tied to the interface dictated by your chosen streaming service.

No problem. I had all those same questions.

1. secondary background scan. The detailed info, connections, data etc.
is in the first (shorter) scan. The second scan is mostly the RG (R128)
scan. The RG use can be turned off. It now works just like LMS (based on
my suggestion to Roon it seems). That is, one can have RG (volume
normalize is what roon calls it) turned OFF, turned to use TRACK, turned
to use ALBUM, or turned to use AUTO (if adjacent tracks are from same
album it uses ALBUM values, if from different albums it uses TRACK
values. This is what SMART GAIN in LMS does. (also, one has the option
to tell Roon to use the RG tag info instead of the info created by the
Roon scan)

2. Yes, Roon can be controlled from almost anything else on the same
network. The core runs on a computer (windows, mac, linux). The control
of Roon can be from that same computer or a different computer on the
same network, or an ipad, iphone, android, etc. I control Roon running
on a headless linux server from my windows laptop or my ipad.

3. Based on reports on the Roon forums, there are a number of people
with 500,000+ libraries that use Roon happily.

4. You didn't ask, but Roon works well with perfect sync between
different endpoints or can play different things to different endpoints.
There are "roon ready" endpoints (purchased or simply a DIY pi
microcomputer, etc.). And Roon software can turn Squeezeboxes and SONOS
into Roon Endpoints as well.

Roon just released 1.3, a major revision. It works well. It is early in
its life and on its forum, it is more like the old days of slimdevices.
Lots of interaction with the developers and founders of the company.
One major difference: roon is not free after trial.

And just to be clear, I'm not a roon fanboy pushing it on the
slimdevices forum. I still mostly use my LMS and squeezeboxes. Roon is
very nice and works well. But for my day to day use, I (and my wife) use
lots of podcast listening and internet radio listening. Roon is way
behind on this. It recently added internet radio (in a sorta clunky
waymanually add URLs) and doesn't deal with things like podcast
apps, etc. In fact, the only services it can access are TIDAL (which
have a deep metadata integration with Roon). But for music collection
listening it really is nice.

Gary, thank you for responding to my tedious questions. I really don't
want to derail this thread by turning it into a thread about Roon
but.

I do have a few more questions and comments.

Regarding the "secondary" background scan: 1) is the replaygain
defeatable since I don't use it nor do I intend to use it any time soon.
2) Is it during this background scan when Roon locates and builds the
database with all the album/song information and generates the various
links?

As for the database size, I would guess that the final Roon database
would end up being 3 to 4 times the size of the LMS database.

And finally, can Roon be used/controlled from other devices (computers,
tablets, smartphones, etc.) within the local network and will Roon
provide the same information and links as when accessed from the
computer that Roon is actually running on?

Again I apologize for hijacking this thread and asking all these
questions. Perhaps a little background information about my setup would
help to explain my concerns. I have a Windows 10 computer that I use as
the LMS server. This computer along with the external hard drives that
contain all my music files is used only as an LMS server. On all my
other computers and devices I use various programs (Moose, Muso, iPeng,
Orange Squeeze, etc.) to access LMS and control the Squeezebox players
in my home. So if Roon's fancy database can only be accessed from the
same computer that Roon is running on then it would be a non-starter for
me. In addition I have a much larger music library and I am concerned
about Roon's ability handle a library of this size.

To try to answer the original posting - I spent yesterday at ISE2017 -
Integrated Systems Europe, one of the largest AV trade fairs in Europe.
It filled pretty much the whole RAI exhibition centre, but only one hall
was Audio. Even Harman International were mostly promoting their smart
retail store concepts. Everything was digital. Audio-over-IP (AES67,
AES70) seems a big thing, but audio is definitely seen as just one of
the many integrated "smart living" components. I had a bit of overload
of Jetsons-like solutions to run my life.

So forget optical. Forget audio cables (even Belkin was displaying their
cat5/6/7 cabling systems). It will all be over IP, and using common
protocols (instead of the current multitude of proprietary solution),
but all too oriented towards "lifestyle".

1. with 95,094 tracks, from scratch it takes about an hour to scan
library (about the same as LMS for me). At this point the music is
playable. But after this, it does an additional scan in the background
to create its own R128 (replaygain) values (both album and track) and
generate wave form info. It takes about 24 hours to complete this task
in the background.

2. hmmm, not sure. The database it creates on my computer (which can be
backed up and restored) is 3.46GB (this doesn't include my music files,
only the roon database)

3. equally responsive as LMS on both a i7 windows machine and an i7
linux machine.

The ipad app for Roon works nicely and shows all this info and is easy

That's a great idea Pablolie. I would also suggest the idea of LMS
supporting MULTICHANNEL to stream through that HDMI interface :-).

And make that room correction DSP powerful enough to handle the
multichannel data in 24/96!

I did listen to a friend's corrected room. I had been there before, and

His space is huge and glassy and challenging. I think my room is very

Interesting discussion about Roon. I've thought about getting that at
times for the simple reason of the expanded database and info. It would
be interesting to know more about the recording and artists, but I'm
so-so about the trivia aspect of music info, as in the drummer on this
album played on another album and that saxophonist got sick during
another recording in 1962 and threw up.

For the most part, I'm content to hear the music that is being played at
the moment.

This seems like a good moment to make a reading reommendation. My son
put me on to a book by Lace Clayton (AKA DJ Rupture) called "Uproot --
Travels in the 21st Century Music and Digital Culture". While I have a
limited appreciation of much the the music under discussion, it is a
fascinating insight into everything from MP3s, Autotune and FruityLoop
software to Congolese and Berber music from Africa, Cumbia Sonidara and
pre-Hispanic Tribal music from Mexico and so on, along with some
interesting comments on the business aspects of the music industry.
Can't say I'll keep it as a re-read or reference book, but was certainly
an interesting read.

My limited experience with room correction is comprised of the Audessy
DSP in my Marantz HTR. it came with a microphone and a cardboard stand
which a set up in the primary listening position and ran the set up.
Based on how much better the surround sound sounds compared with the
older Marantz that the new one replaced, I would say microphone based
set up with a DSP is the way to go.

"Correcting" my two listening rooms is the most interesting and
meaningful thing I've recently done with my Squeezebox system. I spent
$75 for a UMIK-1 calibrated microphone and downloaded the free REW
measurement suite. Implemented 3-4 parametric equalizer filters in each
room using SoX and custom-convert.conf. Whole thing took me under an
hour per room.

want it via an iPad app - preferably built in to iPeng - I don't want to
have to have a PC on to access the data.

Gary i have a few quick questions about Roon:

1) How long does Roon take to scan one's music library as compared to
LMS?

2) How much larger is Roon's database as compared to LMS?

and 3) How responsive is Roon as compared to LMS?

I knew there'd be great replies here.

I can't agree more about keeping relying on Amazon, iTunes or Spotify as
guardians of my music collection. I have bought video on Amazon
outright, only to see it disappear when the studio and Amazon have a
spat - often permanently. And did Amazon notify me or reimburse me? Of
course not.

Active speakers - indeed. Perfect matching is the key... That's one
thing I like about Hypex modules - they provide tight control over a
wide range of loudspeakers.

That is VERY cool. That is a major thing I miss with my library. I spent
many hours scanning the album notes so I had as much info as possible,
but of course picking the .PDFs is totally outside of LMS - it'd be
awesome to be able to get the notes along the active playlist...

This is one of the nice things about Roon (that I've trialed). The UI
on an album or song has a tremendous amount of info at your fingertips.
I see the atist, composer, etc. It shows me other albums the artist or
composer appears on, other artists that have done the same song, etc.
Too much to list. And all accessible by clicks. I learn cool stuff. For
example, I'm playing the first YES album from 1969, and then it is
showing me that the track "I see You" was composed by Crosby and McGuinn
and also appears in my library on the Byrds Box set from 1998 (and if I
click on this, it takes me to play that track on the Byrds album).
None of this is critical to my listening, but the showing of all the
various connections in my library is kinda cool.

My two cents: binaural recording or similar techniques for audio and

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Our Music Listening... in 10 years.

2017-02-06 Thread ralphpnj

My two cents:

Room correction and DSP along with "one box" powered speakers will
slowly become the norm.

Internet based music streaming will soon become the disaster that
internet based video streaming has become. The simple reason for this is
that all the big content providers HATE streaming and are actively doing
their best to destroy streaming. See mlsstl's comments about Netflix
below. Therefore I will continue to maintain my own personal music
library. Thanks to apps like iPeng, along with remote streaming, I can
stream my personal music collection without the restrictions and
limitations imposed by paid music streaming services.

Thanks to bluetooth, which is NOT high resolution but still sound great
to the average listener, high resolution audio will die a swift and
painful death. And it can't happen soon enough!

As stated above, the use of powered "one box" speakers will continue to
grow and along with improved DSP this will become the high end audio of
the future.

The integration of various kinds of information about a recording within
a music app will continue to improve so that in the future when
listening to a given piece of music one will , hopefully, be able to
quickly access all of the this information and fully explore the related
music. Think hyperlinks but in a musically relevant kind of way. For
example when listening to a Miles Davis track, one will easily be able
to explore music by any of the musicians playing on the track along with
other music from the same time period, all via a few simple clicks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Our Music Listening... in 10 years.

2017-02-06 Thread mlsstl

Interesting topic. Hard to see the future, but I don't see things
changing much for me.

1. I've tried digital room correction and it didn't really change things
much or really seem worth the effort. Maybe I'm like you and am fairly
lucky to already have decent acoustics.

2. Music library -- I like streaming for background music, but for
whatever reason, when I'm listening seriously, I use my own collection.
I only listen seriously when I'm at home. I only ever listen casually
when I'm in the car or out and about. I'm sure streaming to phones and
car systems will continue to improve, but doubt that there is any
revolution waiting for me in that. Plus, I have a basic distrust of
streaming and leaving others responsible for my collection. As a long
time Netflix user, I can't tell you how many movies and shows that I
like have disappeared due to copyright and contract negotiation issues.
They are simply unreliable in that regard and I don't see that ever
really changing as long as royalties drive the commercial music world.

3. I see no looming change in audio quality. The driving factor there
has always been fad and fashion in the recording industry. That has
always far outweighed the potential of the medium, IMO.

4. I'm sure speakers will continue to improve, but the ones I have right
now are great for my listening. And, if the currently available industry
products are any indication, pomp and pretense will continue to be more
important than actual sound quality.

5. I'm pretty happy with my Squeezebox and tablet interface. I easily
find the music I like when I want something. I can see interfaces
getting prettier, and the background maintenance a bit more idiot-proof
with time, but I'm pretty happy right now.
