RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2012-01-01 Thread Judi Phillips

Hi Pat,

You are correct. Caetano Moniz Furtado founded Furtado's. According to
Portuguese Spinners, stories of Portuguese Americans in southeastern New
England, Emily Nunes
(Ermalinda) was Caetano' neice. In the 1930(?) census, Manoel and Emily lived
on Stewart St, Fall River with their daughters Emily and Gorgianna. Also note,
Emily was his 2nd wife, he was widowed. There is a nice story about the
Furtado's with pictures of the Furtados and Emily and her daughter. There is
no mention of Manoel Nunes.

Okay. Just in case anyone is researching Caetano Moniz FURTADO and
Maria do Espirito Santo FURTADO, I found the following listing on the
 S. S. Dona Maria, sailing from Sao Miguel, Azores on 30 March 1901 and
arriving in the Port of New York 12 April 1901:

Caetano Moniz FURTADO 24 M Laborer Portuguese Fall River, MA
Maria do Espirito Santo 22 F Domestic Portuguese Fall River MA

It appears that they arrived with Ermelinda (CARREIROher last name
was not included on the roster...it only listed her first name) and it
also appears that Ermelinda's mother, Roza de Jesus 40 F Widow is
 listed with them.

I have reason to suspect that this is the same Caetano Moniz FURTADO
who founded the business FURTADO'S in Fall River, Massachusetts,
selling New England Chourico and Linguica.

Hi Robin,

I am also researching Sao Jorge and the records are available on line at
the http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/registos/default.aspx?concelho=22
If you have their marriage paper it should be a quick find or if you post
it here or email it to me directly I can give it try.

Good luck!

When George came in 1898 he had family with him. There were two. The
others got off in Brazil. There is family in Mass as well. Iam working
 on that also.

Arminda had lived on Terciera prior to Sao Jorge. Her mother had died
on her family's boat. She was taken to Sao Jorge to be raised by
family since her father was a ships Capt.

I have some names that were listed on Calif death certificates. On
George's the name Neves was his mothers.
On Arminda's the name Diaz was on hers.

 Thanks for your help,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching NUNES, CARREIRA/CARREIRO, FURTADO Families = Fall River, Massachusetts

2012-01-01 Thread Pat McCoy
I came across something that has piqued my curiosity. John Raposo
mentioned a baptismal record for Evangelina Moniz FURTADO where the
godparents were listed as Jose' CARREIRO de MEDEIROS and Ermelinda de
JESUS. Then I came across a listing on Ancestry.com that mentions
Caetano Moniz FURTADO and Maria (do Espirito Santo) Esirito MEDEIROS.
Is MEDEIROS the family surname and would that connect Jose' to Maria?

I'm in the process of researching, on behalf of a friend, his Azorean
ancestors. He doesn't know very much about them. I've learned that his
grandfather came from San Miguel and his grandmother emigrated from a
different parish in The Azores. I have to review my notes to recall all
 of
the details I've found up to this point.

The book is out of print. I called the publisher 2years ago and they did
not have any copies. I got mine on Ebay.
You know that Ermalinda sailed from Ponta Delgada on March 30, 1901. Go
on the CCA website and search the passport records from March 30 back until
you find the passport record. It will have her parent's names, her age,
and village. You will have to search the microfilm records to find the
connection, especially if the connection is through the maternal line.

  Hi Pat,

You are correct. Caetano Moniz Furtado founded Furtado's. According
 to
Portuguese Spinners, stories of Portuguese Americans in southeastern
  New
  England, Emily Nunes
(Ermalinda) was Caetano' neice. In the 1930(?) census, Manoel and
 Emily
lived on Stewart St, Fall River with their daughters Emily and
 Gorgianna.
Also note, Emily was his 2nd wife, he was widowed. There is a nice
 story
about the Furtado's with pictures of the Furtados and Emily and her
daughter. There is no mention of Manoel Nunes.

  Hi, Linda.

With all the different correspondences going out and coming in, I'm
not certain if I've contacted her yet. I don't know anything about
the parents of Manoel NUNES and his wife, Ermelinda CARREIRO.

BTW, I've noticed that part of your name is FURTADO. One the
baptismal records of Manoel's and Ermelinda's son, the names of
Caetano Moniz FURTADO and Maria do Espirito Santo FURTADO are listed.
Are those FURTADOs familiar to you, by chance?

  Thanks!

You might also try abebooks.com. They have several copies available from their
sellers, starting at $30.

My copy was purchased several years ago at Baker Books in Dartmouth, MA. I
doubt that they still have any in stock, but it might be worth a phone call.
Their number is 508-997-6700. They're a good independent bookstore with a
section devoted to books of interest to Portuguese-Americans.
