RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] immigration
Mike Did your gg grandparents become US citizens? If so the naturalization papers used to contain the name of the ship and date/place the immigrant arrived. I searched for 5 years for my grandfather-in-law Joseph S. Viera on a passenger list from Faial. While researching his brother's citizenship papers it listed he came over on the Peninsular May 17, 1902 in New York. I checked the records on Ancestry and they didn't even have the ship list for that trip. I then checked the Ellis Island site and there I found the whole family under the wife's maiden name Silva. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: immigration
Ellis Island (www.ellisisland.org) operated from 1892-1954. It's an island in the New York Harbor, so many times people refer to it as sailing into NY. The Ellis Island Web site will cover records for the above dates for Ellis Island/NY only. Before 1892, people sailing into NY went through Castle Garden. Those dates of operation are 1855-1890. Their Web site has only arrivals for their port in NY on the above dates: http://www.castlegarden.org/ If you look on Ancestry and poke around a bit, you will see that they have NY, Ellis Island, Philly, Atlantic Ports (but not for the 1880s), and even more. Mike, you're probably striking out on Ancestry because the years you need are not covered. To find out what exists though you may have to go to your public library and get Michael Tepper's "American Arrival Records." There are 4 chapters and it says what years they cover. Find the chapter that covers the 1880s. Go to the back of that chapter. There's charts back that they says what exists, what's been indexed, and a couple of other things, like the NARA film numbers, I think. It lists all ports too. Your public library also had the Morton Allen Directory. But I think that's just NY. I'd look in my books (I own both), but they are still packed because of my move. There are no records that exist for leaving America. I did verify that with Marian Smith of the USCIS (United States Citizen and Immigration Service - used to be called the INS). Your ancestor may have said Fairhaven because that is where she was physically going to live. I would think that she sailed either into NY (Ellis) or New Bedford, since that is very close to Fairhaven. She could be counted in either port (sailed into NY first then the boat continued onto New Bedford...depending on the captain, he may have had everyone counted in NY or he may have waited and had those continuing on counted in New Bedford). There's a remote chance that they sailed into Canada and then crossed the border that way. Ancestry has those records too, but I don't know how comprehensive they are. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Manoel Chaves Braga - Santa Maria
Hi Denis and Tish, Thank you for responding to my email. I have been utilizing research sites such as familysearch.org and haven't been able to locate my ancestors that are listed: Francisca Claudiana do Rego Coutinho (Year of birth: 1824, Year of Death: 1925 - both in Santa Maria) Married to: Antonio Coelho Andrade (Year of Birth: 1828, Married: 1857, Year of Death: 1925) Found on Jose de Encarnacao Fontes Baptism Registry (Paroquia de Assuncao - Vila do Porto), No. 26, April 8, 1863 Possibly his grandparents: Manuel Jacintha de Fontes Lucia Ignacia (I'm not quite sure that this is the correct spelling) Isabel Monteiro Married to: Manuel Soares Coutinho Thank again for responding to my email and for any suggestions, recommendations, and help. I do appreciate it! Have a great evening. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Manoel Chaves Braga - Santa Maria
Fatima: Short answer: while the surnames are familiar, we do not have information on any of your specifically mentioned ancestors. Now what we do have: Our research has centered on the two eastern parishes, the freguesias of Santa Bárbara and Santo Espírito. The surnames Coutinho, Coelho, Andrade, Fontes are found in these two freguesias. To help with a possible connection, do you have any dates for your mentioned ancestors (baptisms, marriage, deaths)? Specific names on which we have some information: 1. Ventura Soares COUTINHO, resident of Santana, [ north of Vila do Porto] freguesia of Nossa Senhora da Assunção 2. José Ignacio Coelho d'ANDRADE [also known as José Ignacio COUTHO] 3. Manoel Joaquim de FONTES [several of this name, as well as de FONTES with different given names] Since you were born in Vila do Porto, are these ancestors likely from the same area? If so, and if you have access to a Latter Day Saint Family History Center, I can furnish you with the microfilm numbers you will have to search. Are you familiar with the work of the Mormons in microfilming the Church ledgers? It is from these that most of us doing Azores genealogy rely upon. The films of Vila do Porto, five in number, contain records from 1599-1892. There is no index available, but each ledger was in chronological order, so if you have approximate dates, specific records are not too difficult to find (reading them may be the more difficult problem, given in some cases their physical condition, the use of Latin-old Portuguese, etc.) Unfortunately records from the other freguesias (Santa Bárbara, Santo Espírito, São Pedro) were not photographed beyond 1883. I hope this helps -- we shall be glad to stay in touch with you if you desire, Denis & Tish -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you!
