[AZORES-Genealogy] Altares, Terceira records prior to 1644
I am trying to trace my Altares line back and have come to a stop for the moment as the records are not present prior to 1644 (Baptisms) and 1648 (Marriages). My ancestor is Belchior Goncalves de Carvalho who was married to Maria Goncalves. Their son Manuel Goncalves Carvalho was married prior to 1646 to Maria de Melo presumably in Altares (as this is where all of their children were born) and once before that to Catharina Pereira in Se, Terceira on 1 Feb 1633. Through the earlier marriage record I was able to get the names of his parents of Belchior Goncalves Carvalho and Maria Goncalves. Any suggestions where I might go from there to get the generation before Belchior? Do records exist prior to 1644 in Altares, or were they destroyed or part of another parish before that? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Isabel de castro
I did a little research myself, and, this what I found on Isabel de Castro: There are several persons in Spanish history named Isabel de Castro. One was Isabel de Castro Osorio who was part of the Spanish Royal Family, but, lived quite a bit later than Alfonso XI. She may, however, have descended from him. That is about as far as I can go with this, as, I am not schooled Spanish history, and my family research does not link notably with many of the characters found in the history of Spain. As for your research, if you're looking for links to Isabel de Castro, I think you need to concentrate on Spanish genealogy, at least until you find definite links to Portuguese figures. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. [AZORES-Genealogy] de faria Family
Hello: Does anyone have any information on Andre de Faria born November 26, 1746 , Rabo de Peixe, son of Domingos da Costa and Antonia de faria. he married on August 19, 1767 to Maria de Sao Jose Rodrigues. Maria's father was Jose Rodrigues and Engracia Cabral. Andre died February 18, 1823. I am looking for information for Domingos da Costa and his family and ancestors. I would say that the family is from Rabo de Peixe, Azores. His parents may have been Tome Da Costa and Maria Nunes Rodrigues, not sure. I think Tomas said it pretty much, and I'd have to agree with the part where maybe on the continent they may understand you more than in the islands. Question is, will you be able to understand their Portuguese? :) I find some dialects harder to understand, much more so than those on the continent, although now I am slowly recognizing a lot more words than what I did nearly 20 years ago. I would recommend the Family Finder test. The family finder will have matches which will be within the last 4-5 generations. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Altares, Terceira records prior to 1644
Hi David,Manuel Goncalves Carvalho and Maria de Melo are also my ancestors.I do know about all the others you mentioned and presume there must be a close relation, but as yet, I haven't pieced together any facts leading to my Manuel Goncalves Carvalho being the same one who married Catarina Pereira. But I haven't yet completed my early Altares baptism research to see who all the padrinhos were. Maybe that's where you made this leap back.My line continues with their daughter Beatriz de Melo. Which of their children is your line?As for the records of Altares, that's all there are. Anything older is presumably lost from some form of destruction like an earthquake or fire or maybe pirates ransacking the church.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Altares, Terceira records prior to 1644 From: Kawika322 oldschoo...@gmail.com Date: Wed, April 17, 2013 11:16 pm To: azores@googlegroups.com I am trying to trace my Altares line back and have come to a stop for the moment as the records are not present prior to 1644 (Baptisms) and 1648 (Marriages). My ancestor is Belchior Goncalves de Carvalho who was married to Maria Goncalves. Their sonManuel Goncalves Carvalho was married prior to 1646 to Maria de Melo presumably in Altares (as this is where all of their children were born) and once before that to Catharina Pereira in Se, Terceira on 1 Feb 1633. Throughthe earliermarriage record I was able to get the names of his parents of Belchior Goncalves Carvalho and Maria Goncalves. Any suggestions where I might go from there to get the generation before Belchior? Do records exist prior to 1644 in Altares, or were they destroyed or part of another parish before that? Thanks, David -- -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help reading a name
Hi Sheri,I didn't notice if anyone told you that the child you found is not Regina. His name was Manuel Joaquim Leal da Rocha Homem (changed to Manuel Rocha Holmes). If Angelina is your ancestor, then we are very distantly related. He was born on 4 Nov 1865 in Sao Matheus, Praia, Graciosa and baptized on 5 Nov 1865. His mother is listed as Maria do Espirito Santo, and she is a native of Santa Barbara (Ribeiras), Pico. The father is listed as unknown. Maternal grandparents are listed as Jose Pereira and Maria do Espirito Santo. They are natives of Santa Barbara (Ribeiras), Pico. I am attaching the baptismal record I made a copy of at the Family History Center. You can find more info going back on the maternal grandparents Jose Pereira and Maria do Espirito Santo on the University of Minho website in the Lajes do Pico, Ribeiras section. http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=Ribeiras;lang=en;p=jose;n=pereira;oc=2On the website link, the mother of Francisco Jose Dutra is presumably the youngest child of Jose Pereira and Maria do Espirito Santo, born 25 Jan 1820.
