2014-05-21 Thread luiznoia .
Helda,

You are getting a lot of help here, that may be wasted time because you are
withholding the most important piece of information.

What are you uncle's parents names and birthdates? With that we can
verify a connection to whatever Laura we are looking for.

2014-05-21 Thread Helda Pritchard
Thank you so much for everyone's help. This still may be my Laura that I am
looking for. The biological father is from Soa Jorge and not the father
listed on the birth certificate. I could also be chasing lots of
coincidences. I think the only way I will be able to verify the laura i am
looking for is by finding a living relative and posting the photo I have of
 the two oldest sons.
I am on Family Search.org and that is how I found most of those records.
Thank you for the people who found the additional information. I really
appreciate everyones work.

2014-05-21 Thread Helda Pritchard

Thank you everyone but since this is the Laura that I thought it might
have been however thanks to the hard work of some of the people on this
board who found her wedding certificate that had her parents name and then
the birth certificate it proves it is not the Laura I was looking for. Just
a lot of good coincidences,
Thank you again everyone for the help will have to try another Laura.

They might be in print, but not available in the U.S. I seem to remember

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Godfather José de Sousa, Santa Bárbara, Santa Maria

2014-05-21 Thread Denis Meals
I am in need of help with the word immediately following Godfather José de
Sousa, _,which I presume is his occupation, and the expression
following solteiro, "creado de servir"...

Lines 2-4, top left page
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-B-1880-1889/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-B-1880-1889_item1/P107.html

The occupation, I can not quite make out the letters, and creado de servir
does not seem to make sense in translating to english.

Thanks,
Denis

I'm not sure if there is a person on this list named Wanderley, but it's a unique name that I remember from somewhere years ago from a genealogist in Brasil. So today I was looking through records of Brasil and found an Henrique Wanderley and wife Isabel whose daughter Sarah was married. If you are interested, let me know.I think the reason I remember it was that this Wanderley genealogist has Piedade, Pico ancestors and is probably somehow related to me.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help to solve a mystery for my uncle.

2014-05-21 Thread Helda Pritchard
Hi John,
That is part of my problem. The biological father is from Riberia Sica, S.
Jorge. However from the information Laura was not born on the island. As
for her birthdate again no clue I know the biological father was born in
1845 and the half brother was born in 1892.
The Laura Moniz/ Mitchell I found that I think may be the one unfortunately
has several birthdates listed on US Census and in the end her death
certificate ranging from the dates 1868 -1880. On most of the census her
birthplace it ranges from Azores to Westward Islands. However on the
oldest sons birth registry it says Pico for both Frank P Mitchell and Laura.
Again my search is a total shot in the dark.
My Uncle (by marriage) was asking because I have at least 7 generations
back for both my parent maternal and paternal side with copies of marriage
and death certificates (thanks to technology). A lot of it is because both
my parents or from Sao Jorge and we only immigrated when I was a young
child and my parent knew a lot of verbal history.
Thanks for any help.

Me, too and I hope we have found Helda's "Laura". It is possible that Laura's
Dad had a first marriage.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help to solve a mystery for my uncle.

2014-05-21 Thread pico
Hi Helda,Since your original quest was to find your uncle's aunt Laura, I think you accomplished your goal and might not have any further interest. But if you ever want to discover her as a passenger to the US, then I can tell you most from Pico departed from the port of Horta on the island of Faial (usually spelled Fayal in the records of that time). And the passport records of Horta are not yet available online. They are completely scanned and ready for posting, but they were given to the people who are responsible to upload them and that just hasn't been accomplished yet. When my brother was at the archive in Horta exactly a year ago, he was told to expect to see those records in a month, but that's long ago passed, of course. But that's not a surprise, because similarly, I got information two years ago this summer that all the Graciosa Island baptisms were scanned and to expect them to appear online in six more months. Well, just this week the last of the Graciosa baptisms got uploaded. So that again was a two year lag.Even though the passports are one online, it doesn't mean you can't find her on the passenger ship lists, assuming that matters to you. They have been online for a very long time. She might have arrived through Ellis Island, or maybe Providence, RI, or maybe also Boston. Those are the most likely three ports, but others are also possible. As for Laura's ancestors, I'm sure I could find them for you, but I haven't looked yet.Good luck.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

This is the closest thing I found in Pico:

Laureana, born in Pico on 5 October 1868 to José Moniz and Isabel da Conceição
Teresa.

Of course, if Laura's birth name was Maria, you are in for a very long search.

Laura's father's name may be listed on the birth record. If both parents were
single, the child would be listed as "filha natural", rather than "filha
ilegítima". It seems she had a well established relationship with her father's
side of the family.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Helda,

I found the birth records for 6 of their children so far. The record for
their son Joseph lists the both his father and mother as born in PICO. All
the others say Western Islands. All children b. Gloucester.

Antone b. 2/19/1901
Joseph b. 10/2/1895 parents b. PICO
Nora b. 7/29/1897
John b. 4/13/1899
Arthur b. 4/11/1904
Manuel P. 1/24/1907

You can see these at familysearch.org. Just put in the last name Mitchell,
Gloucester, Massachusetts, father Frank, mother Laura and they will
all come up for you as well as census record info. Hope this helps. I
have not been able to find her US ship's manifest and am not good at
reading the Passportes records and don't know where she would have sailed
from in the Azores if she came from Pico. I am sure others on the list can
help you with this and you could search 1887 to 1889 range. Will take some
time.

Helda,

Frank P. MASON 24, and Laura A. MONIES 23, were married November 20, 1892,
at Our Lady of Good Voyages Church in Gloucester by Father Francisco Viera
de Bem. They are both listed as born in Western Isles (Azores on census
records). His parents are Manuel P. and Mary. Her parents are Joseph and
Isabelle. The 1910 census lists 11 children born, 7 living. Joseph 14,
Leonora 12, John 11, Anthony 9, Arthur 7, Manuel 3. All the children born
in Massachusetts. I have also found them in 1920, 1930 and 1940 census
Laura Mitchell is a widow. Census records show she came to US 1887/1889 so
it would be around that time. I will try and find children birth record
info to see if anything else is listed on her birthplace. I will also try
to find her on ship's manifest. You might try and get a copy of their
marriage record from them to see if it may give more info on her
birthplace. You can google the church and their phone number/address are
listed They moved to CA between 1908 and 1920.

Helda,

Can you give us an approximate place of birth and also, do you know where in
the Azores (parish and island) Laura would have been born in? Even guesses will
be helpful and would help filter out the Lauras who are not matches. Thanks!

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to help my Uncle find his aunt. As my mom and I have been doing our
family tree my Uncle who is in his 80's has asked if I could help find his
missing aunt. My Uncle's father and Grandfather had always talked about "Tia
Laura". His grandfather had her before he married so she was older then the
half brother. All we know is that Laura had gone to the states she was born
several years before her younger half brother. She was living in California in
the early 1920's as her half brother had visited her and sent his father
photos, one of them had two men and it said on the back these are Laura's two
oldest sons the boys were close to the their Uncles age. Another clue we have
is the year 1943 that was written on my uncles grandfathers records but with no
correspondence to why.
Doing research I found a Laura Moniz/Mitchell that is about the right age and
did live in California at about the right time. She had sons that would be
about the right age and she did die in 1943. These could all be coincidences. I
am hoping that maybe one of her family members is doing family research and
stumbles upon this. As Laura was a illegitimate then her father would be listed
as incongnito on her birth certificate.  I would be able to provide Laura's
family with 5 generations back on the fathers side. The woman I think could be
the missing Laura is in some records listed as Laura Moniz sometimes she is
listed as Laura Mitchell. She was married to a Frank P Mitchell they lived in
Glouchester Mass and had several children Joseph, Leonora (Nora), John,
Anthony, Aurthur and Manuel.  She died on March 4th, 1943 in Alameda
California.
Again I would happily scan the photo online to prove that this Laura is the
right one.

I know this is a long shot but you never know unless you ask.
