[AZORES-Genealogy] name changes in america

2015-02-10 Thread David Perry
We all rue the name changes in the Azores but the tradition carried on in
this country as well. We're all familiar with the more common changes such
as Pereira to Perry. However one of my lines went from Medeiros to Medas
to Meetis all in the span of fifty years or so. Another changed from
Manuel Rego to something entirely different because he didn't want to be
confused with his cousin, another Manuel Rego in the same town. Brick
walls are everywhere.

Nancy,

When I first saw your email I thought, at last someone who knows about Joseph
Victorino (Vitorino Jose)! But I guess it was a different one. From what I
could find the one I am looking for was born Feb 25, 1832 in Angústias, Horta,
Faial, Azores. His father was Vitorino Jose dos Reis and mother was Mariana
Luisa Candida. He did settle in New Bedford. But my relatives say it was New
Bedford, New Jersey. I haven't verified that yet. He supposedly came over to
America with his older brother, Antonio Victorino in 1859.

2015-02-10 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
There is no stock answer to your question. It could be that your aunt was
referring to the family name of her father or mother. Naming traditions seem to
change at different times and some woman started using a family name later in
life. In some of the last records which I found my 2nd great grandmother she
was named as Rita de Pimentel. In earlier she was named as Rita de Jesus or
Rita dos Santos.

As you go further back in your search you could very well find the da Rocha in
your tree.

I have for some time also thought that the shared DNA could partially have
to do with Madeirans settling in the Azores the surname Bettencourt is an

fewer of them in North America than Azoreans and that is where the bulk of
those testing are from.

There is no date on the manifest, but Ancestry has it as 13 Aug 1883.

He is listed as Jose I Victorino, 21 yrs old. He is just below Francisca J

You can also see on the arrival list, Francisco I Pimentel that matches the
Francisco Ignacio Pimentel at line 572 of the Horta list

2015-02-10 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
Cheri,

Thanks for all the info! I have a world membership on Ancestry.com by haven't
been able to find anything. That is why I am trying other avenues. I looked at
the Castle Garden and it didn't have anything - neither did the
olivetreegenealogy.com. I was able to find (on a Portuguese site) the ship Name
of Asor arriving in Boston, Mass on June 10, 1859 and Azor or Acor arriving on
Aug 20, 1859 but no list of passengers. I will have to keep researching.

  Barbara,

In America, the Customs Passenger Lists cover the period from about 1820-1890
(Immigration Passenger Lists cover the period from about 1890-1954).

In Michael Tepper's "American Passenger Arrival Records," at the end of the
chapter titled "Customs Passenger Lists" (it's Chapter 3 in my book, published
1993), it lists the ports and years covered, as well was what exists and what's
missing. For example, it says that Boston has copies or abstracts covering 22
Sep 1820- 31 Mar 1874 (gaps) M277. M277 is the National Archive roll number.
That film is indexed in M334. It also mentions that 1848-1891 (State Lists)
are indexed in M265. Other east coast ports (up in New England) are Baltimore,
MD; Bristol & Warren, RI; Edgartown, MA; Fall River, MA; Nantucket, MA; New
Bedford, MA; New Haven, CT; Newport, RI; New York, NY (this is Castle Garden;
Ellis Island was NOT in existence); and Providence, RI. You'll have to go to
your public library to check for the details on these ports.

You can search Castle Garden: http://www.castlegarden.org/
I also googled: ships 1859 and came up with this. Don't know how good it is
though.
  http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa1854-1860.shtml

You can search Ancestry too. I don't believe they have every port though.
If you don't have a subscription, your local public library or FHC has a
subscription.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese Hawaiian Newspapers online

2015-02-10 Thread robertjm
The Library of Congress has a huge selection of papers online from across
the country, and they are text searchable!

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/

While I think these are all pretty much English language papers, they're
still a great source.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ships

2015-02-10 Thread Cheri Mello
Barbara,

In America, the Customs Passenger Lists cover the period from about
1820-1890 (Immigration Passenger Lists cover the period from about
1890-1954).

In Michael Tepper's "American Passenger Arrival Records," at the end of the
chapter titled "Customs Passenger Lists" (it's Chapter 3 in my book,
published 1993), it lists the ports and years covered, as well was what
exists and what's missing. For example, it says that Boston has copies or
abstracts covering 22 Sep 1820- 31 Mar 1874 (gaps) M277. M277 is the
National Archive roll number. That film is indexed in M334. It also
mentions that 1848-1891 (State Lists) are indexed in M265. Other east
coast ports (up in New England) are Baltimore, MD; Bristol & Warren, RI;
Edgartown, MA; Fall River, MA; Nantucket, MA; New Bedford, MA; New Haven,
CT; Newport, RI; New York, NY (this is Castle Garden; Ellis Island was NOT
in existence); and Providence, RI. You'll have to go to your public
library to check for the details on these ports.

You can search Castle Garden: http://www.castlegarden.org/
I also googled: ships 1859 and came up with this. Don't know how good it
is though.
http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa1854-1860.shtml

You can search Ancestry too. I don't believe they have every port though.
If you don't have a subscription, your local public library or FHC has a
subscription.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ships

2015-02-10 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
Cheri,

I have looked at the passports and found my gr gr gr grandfather, Antonio
Victorino in Horta in March 7, 1859. I am now trying to find his arrival in
America. It looks like the ship is Asor and he arrived in (I think) Boston from
family records. But supposedly his brother Joseph (VItorino Jose) arrived with
him and I can't find him. So do you know if there is a passenger list for the
ship Asor landing in America in 1859? This is the url for the passport I found:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1856-1859/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1856-1859_item1/P60.html
Antonio Victorino is the last entry on the page.

Thanks for any help!

The 3 ports for the Azores are Ponta Delgada (on Sao Miguel), Angra, and
Horta. Only Ponta Delgada and Horta are online. Ponta Delgada doesn't go back
to 1859. I don't know about Angra. You can access the passaportes here:

Just to put a plug in for the UMas s site , the newspapers a v aila ble on it
were all scanned from the original copies (including the Hawaiian o nes) , so
the quality of the images (and read ability) will be much clearer ; as well,
the U of Manoa site does not allow you to search within the newspapers, so you
need to download each individual PDF in order to search for an individual,
location or e vent.

I use the total cMs as a guide too, but the chart on the ISOGG wiki is off,
at least with most of the cases I see. 53 cMs is 3rd cousins or 2nd

I swear I saw a cM chart with ranges with a lot of overlap which made
better sense. Of course I can't find it. Grrr.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese Hawaiian Newspapers online

2015-02-10 Thread Kalani N
I just tried the new "newspapers" made available, and it just hung there.
I tried it in Chrome and it downloaded immediately.

It's only that site. Before I'd also try to save rather than open, and it
still would just sit there. I'll have to figure out why that site I have
problems with Firefox. So I have it bookmarked now on Chrome. I was
trying to access that site last month while trying to get statistics
(Hawaii's population) from some of their almanacs there. :)

Kalani,

They are also on the UMass Portuguese American Newspaper web site. Maybe
access will be better?

Wow, they added more.

But that site always has problems downloading. Not sure if anyone else has
the same problem.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] How many family finder matches do you have?

2015-02-10 Thread Kalani N
I actually don't go by the predicted relationship, and really don't look at
that but rather the total shared cM. Then I use this as a guide.

http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_statistics

So if you have a match you share 50cM or less, to me that is from 3rd
cousins and beyond. Definitely not 2nd cousins, as that chart mentions
212.50cM for 2nd cousins. I have cousins who are 2nd cousins to each other
and they share 185.46cM total, 37.35cM for the longest block and 24
segments according to FTDNA (on GEDmatch it's 152.7cM total, 40.4cM largest
segment on 7 segments). And what is important to look is the longest block
in order to gauge how distant the relationship may be. Small blocks
totaling high totals with a lot of segments indicate endogamy.
