Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Velma Cotta

2015-10-21 Thread luiznoia .
Yes, By identifying the parents, I may be able to postively identify Manuel
, then Edward, son of Velma and him.

There is somone that ties this family to Orange County and San Bernardino.
There are more than one M.Coelho family dairy farming in both places. I
have not indentified what the M stands for. Martin, Macedo, Machado or
other.

Same for the M Cotta. Also tied to San Bernardino, as it was the Joe M
Cotta death record place.

 confusion more than anything else.

Thirteen years old with parental consent was allowed then. My g
grandmother was 13 when she married a 35 yr old in 1909 with her mother as
 the witness.

This certificate confirms we are on the right track with the Joe M
Cotta family. When the CCA site comes back online, I'll continue the
passport search to locate them arriving in 1901 .
Does it give the names of Manuel's parents, or ant adresses?

 Eric,
Just received a copy of the Marriage Certificate for Velma M. Cotta and
Manuel M. Coelho on Oct. 13, 1923 in Tulare, Calif. It shows her name as
*Velma* not Belmira even though the newspaper article listed her as
 Belmira.

Her parents are Joe M. Cotta - birthplace Portugal and Mary Conceicao
 - birthplace Portugal the same as the 1910 census.

Now the fun part! It shows Velma's age as 17 years old!!The 1910
census clearly shows Belmira as 2/12 - 2 months old.Do you suppose the
parents fudged a bit on her age?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Velma Cotta

2015-10-21 Thread Cheri Mello
Mary Conceicao is really Maria da Conceição, meaning Mary of the
Conception. It is a religious middle name.

After immigration, some women did start to use their father's surname as a
maiden name. And some didn't. So you are going to have to check both ways.

I don't know when the informant box appeared on birth certificates. So
Velma may not have provided the information. If her husband did, he may
have been providing his best guess.
