I think this record is my great grandfather.  The only US record I have 
found that I know with certainty is him is his death record (1912) which lists 
his parents as "John Silveira" and "Marianna Florinda" and gives his birth as 
"1870" "Azores".   What I can get from this record is that he was baptized 9 
August 1868, his father is Joao Silveira de Souza and his mother is Marianna 
Florinda, paternal grandparents Manuel Silveira de Souza and Anna Luiza, 
maternal grandparents Antonio Jose Vieira and Barbara Florinda For 
godparents.  I cannot make out what is written after Florinda.  More 
importantly, it looks like the record states that his birth was in October 1867 
but that line is really difficult to make out because of bleed-through from the 
back side of the page (I'm guessing).  It is the record on the top right, #35, 
Jose.


1.  Did I get the information correct?
2.  Can anyone help with the last part of Barbara Florinda's name?
3.  Can anyone verify/clarify the birth date in October?

I t says Mel born 8 Feb 1562. Is this the right birth? Second on right.

It might be, Sandra. The first letter is the one I'm having trouble with
and I tried looking at other docs on the page and previous but this priest
really writes crazy, sometime he capitalizes and sometimes he doesn't. I
guess it could be an "R" with the bottom part of the capital faded away? I
really originally took it to be an "F" but I think you have the right
couple. Just try to find more kids and hopefully a different priest!! LOL

I think it says, "nasceu nesta fraguesia as dois horas da tarde do premeiro 
de mez d' Outubro"; Joao was a lavarador and Marianna a domestic. Foram 
padrinhos, Joao Jose da Silveira cazado lavrador e sua mulher Anna Josefa, 
domestic. Must be a cousin.

To follow up with Shirl's inquiry and the request for a link.

We have several instances of Banzeco/Banseco's.
This word will often follow our surname Rocha. Many believe it to be an 
alcuna/nickname.
It could also be an obscure occupation.

My friend in Brazil believes it could be a derivative of "banzo" a feeling 
of nostalgia
some took a stretch to suggest that it might be related to : banco/bank , 
seco/dry
We've even had folks asking around on Flores, but no luck so far on a 
definite answer.

Dale, Joao usually only makes the trip once a year, to do a class in
California for LUSO . He has been trying to schedule classes on the East
Coast for the last two years. He also usually comes with Cheri and I to
Salt Lake City for a four-day Conference. It's great because not only do
you get the lectures by the three of us but we help you in the evenings at
the Library one-on-one. We've had people come from Canada, Australia and
many from different states including, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana,
Washigton, Oregon, Utah, Iowa, Arizona and California. We have a really
good time and we all learn a lot!
