I'm really not sure, Nancy Jean, but that was my first thought when I first
looked at it. There is an Alferes by that name but can't remember the
wife's name. Maybe I saw it in the unpublished manuscript for Sao Jorge?

I can read the dads name but am having issues with the mothers name. 
According to his marriage record I have the mother for him as Theresa Rosa 
da Silveira, but the name in this record does not look like Theresa Rosa.

Thank you so much! I just wasn't sure of what I was seeing! I sure wish they 
put the ages in the records during this time. Between the name changes and the 
marriages within families it's very difficult to know who's who! I still have 
no idea why Antonio Abreu/ spelled Habreu on his marriage, would take part of 
his wife's father's name, de Quadros. Why not his full name of de Quadros 
Pereira? Yikes!


I've never seen a record where a man married his son-in-laws sister!


Also, thank you for posting the links and the suggestion to look for Maria 
Bernarda's obit. This is my direct maternal line and Maria Bernarda's records 
are very illusive. I'd love to be able to trace her line back further.my Mt 
full sequence is H3b with 5 extra mutations and within the Iberian Ashkenazi Mt 
DNA Project at FTDNA our H3b is flagged as "likely Sephardic"and I have no 
close matches at allonly 1 and she's a genetic distance of 3no clues 
there.

Month? Day? 1797 (presumably between 17 Sep and 5 Nov 1797), Velas

Joao Ignacio de Souza?, son of Joao de Souza? Machado and Tereza? Maria de 
Jesus, widower of Maria Bernarda Poderoza, native of Velas and parishioner of 
Norte Grande.

Joanna? Maciel Alvares, daughter of Antonio Alvares de Quadros and Joanna Maria 
da Silveira, native and parishioner of Velas

It appears to me that the father of the bride in the first marriage is the same 
as the groom in the second marriage.  Since Anna Bernarda's marriage does list 
her mother as defuncta (deceased), perhaps she died between 1794 and 1797 
(possibly in Norte Grande).

It also appears to me that the parents of the groom in the first marriage are 
the same as the parents of the bride in the second marriage.  If so, then you 
are correct that he married his son-in-law's sister.

I'm very confusedVelas marriages1788-18062 records.pg's 37 and 
54..I'm looking for my 6x greats.Joao Ignacio de Sousa and maria 
Bernarda Poderosa...I know she's from Norte Grande...


Pg 37, bottom left, appears to be the marriage of their daughter, Ana Bernarda 
to Joao Jose da Silveira...son of Antonio Alvernaz de Quadros...is the Alvernaz 
correct? Antonio was born on Faial the son of Domingos de Abreu and Luisa 
Goulart...when he moved to Sao Jorge and married he dropped the Abreu and 
changed his name to his wife's, Joanna Maria, father's name of de 
Quadros...this however, is the first time I've seen him use the Alvernazis 
it correct and can anyone glean any info I'm missing? I don't see ages...


Page 54 confuses me moreleft side bottomJoao Ignacio de Sousa 
Machado...he appears to be the widower of Maria Bernarda Poderosa and is 
marrying a sister of his son in law Help please...
