I asked the date of the map because I was told that the area that my great
grandparents came from had fallen into the ocean. They were from Salto
Verde. I see Faja do Salto Verde on the Northern coastline. It is just west
of the second longitude line from the lower end of the island.

I know when we were there in 2001 a fellow was telling us that to hike
there was very difficult because the trail was very narrow and steep. We
did not do the hike. I also do not have any idea when that was supposed to
have happened.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: azores currencies

2017-03-01 Thread linda

Hi Gordon,

Those are really interesting questions. I might be able to help a bit with
the question regarding the currency, but others will have to answer your
questions on religious practice.

Currency: The Real was the monetary unit in use until about 1910 and the
end of the Portuguese monarchy. A Vintem equaled 20 Reis, and a Tostao
equaled 80 (or, later, 100) Reis. What are the dates of the records you're
wondering about? I have some historic conversion rates somewhere on my
computer, but depending on the period you're looking at, they might not
apply.

Also, if you don't mind adding links to the original records you're
referencing, that might help people to interpret them.

hope that helps,

:)

It is the early form of writing a surname with de, da, do.

An example is (da Ruda, d'aRuda, de Arruda)

In the case here we have ( da Guiar, d'aGuiar, de Aguiar)

The surname is "de Aguiar"

I'm not sure how to enter it in the program. Help?

4th line: Antonio Silveira v.o (abbreviation for viuvo, widower) of Maria
Rosa, marrying with (com) Maria Rosa, the legitimate daughter of Antonio
Silveira and Maria Rosa.

No ages, as that's usually in the 3rd time period of 1860s onward. But it
mentions that they met their Lenten obligations.

Yes, 62 or so.
In the left column, under the name of Antonio, it says "solteiro" although
it looks almost like "falteiro." Single man, not married. Also in the
document, it says he doesn't have children. Or he had them, he never owned
up to it publicly.

The Parental Matching is a tool to help you split your match list into
paternal and maternal matches. If that's not of use to you, then no need to
identify who is who or to link them.

Hopefully most people will get into doing the Parental Matching so FTDNA
can use the statistics to improve the range estimates, especially on
endogamous populations. Cheri

Hi Cheri,

That was fast. Thanks. That puts my ‘lowish’ numbers in a reasonable

OK. Forgot that the numbers go down in a pattern per the generations.
Given the similar (and changing) names I see (or think I see) some
potential for interfamily relationships.

I have a direct-line tree on FTDNA (re-keyed all in the one on the site).
I’d be OK with participating in an ‘all in one ish’ tree if it was a

visually confusing. Wished they left the prior system in place. Meanwhile,
I add direct line others to my master tree

I was stuck for some while with the lack of typical name patterns and
making no progress. Here’s how I broke through the block:

Really good idea to just try to have quality time on Graciosa! I took a

All,

Thanks so much for the replies and suggestions. I combined all my comments
and updates into one e-mail in order to avoid posting too many individual
posts on the list.

Given the comments I saw on SATA it sounds like using TAP as proposed may
be a good choice. I think I'd like to pass on getting the "I survived SATA"
t-shirt (and the experience). :-)

As I mentioned I found $82 Lisbon-Terceira. I found Lisbon-Graciosa
(changing in Terceira) for $144. I like the idea of taking one of the
ferries but from what I saw online and comments found it seems the service
can be irregular. Indeed, online it looked like service was only once a
week, particularly during the off-season and I couldn't even find a
schedule. Given all that I feel it might be safer to look at the
Lisbon-Graciosa flights. Perhaps a longer stay could involve the ferry (I
love the idea of taking a boat for the scenic aspect) but not this time.

I took seriously the comments about strategy regarding one versus multiple
islands. I'm pretty locked into no more than 4 days maximum and so I think
I'd like to take the tack of doing one island well and that one should be
the one where I might have the biggest bang in terms of family searching.
That will allow enough time to thoroughly soak up the culture as well as
search for my possible da Silva relations in person and in records.

I did take a look at AirBNB and was pleased to find a couple of facilities
that look very promising and at very reasonable rates. I think I will
attempt to use one of them for the stay.

Now, shifting to the da Silva line, I want to thank those who sent
promising notes about da Silva/Silva connections in Graciosa: Leonard, Sue
Q, and Don. I would like to follow up with each of you. I plan on doing
some more pre-trip legwork (including CCA research) to give me a better
chance of success on the island. Along those lines, I started building a
website (http://www.familytreeaz.com/Working/daSilva_Graciosa/) to help me
keep track of my da Silva family and the records found. I've still got 4
more that I need to find (please disregard those placeholder links for
now) and add to the website but do have 4 on there now. I included both my
digital image excerpts of each record as well as the link to the specific
page to facilitate better analysis (including others on the same page). I
hope to have the missing 4 up there by this evening. Much thanks to Edna
Epps for finding these records that would have probably taken me 10x the
time to find. Here is the family group that I'm referring to:

[AZORES-Genealogy] First Identified DNA Match

2017-03-01 Thread M. Stringer
Hi,

Finally, an identified match – of course, with questions. My FTDNA tree is
updated, X-Match chart printed/colored, other visual aids created and now
exploring others’ trees.

The match is to Pat Nostrome (I think part of the project)? Per FTDNA, the
numbers are: 55 shared CM; 28 longest block; XMatch. Per comparing our
trees, I found a definite match to my 3xG grandparents, and think Pat and I
are 3rd C, 1xR. HOWEVER, this connection is not in the XMatch spectrum.
More to be revealed?

The match is to 1793 Antonio DUTRA of Lajes, Pico and his wife, abt 1799
Rita da Conceico (died Lajes, Pico). My line is their son, 1820 Jose
Francisco DUTRA, b Lajes + his wife, 1826 Bernarda Candida, b Piedade.
(Bernarda’s family offers some XMatch families to pursue).

Jose and Bernarda married in Conceicao, Terceira, 1844, where they
settled/raised their family. Their son, 1850 Jose Machado DUTRA m 1855
Maria do Carmo Pinheiro. Her earlier family is fairly solid to Terceira.

FamFinder and XMatch repeat checking:

Verifying I should anticipate an ancestral range of b abt 200 years before
me or matches? Same general range for XMatch candidates?

Cheers,

The archives that holds the records for Graciosa is in Angra, on Terceira
(they hold Terceira, Graciosa, and Sao Jorge islands). The dispensation for
all 9 islands are in Angra (since Angra is the Diocese seat).

I seem to remember all inter-island flights are SATA.

After thinking about my experices with SATA, I do remember them leaving a
message for me and I went into their office in Ponta Delgada and they told
me they changed my flight home. It was a few hours different. I think they
told me this a couple of days in advance. Only other thing I clearly
remember is they were very slow with getting the bags off the plane and to
baggage claim. However, this was 10 years ago.

Good luck! Cheri

Hi Ken,

I think you have made some great decisions and are making wonderful progress!
Sorry to scare you off of SATA but I have a feeling that the flight that you
take from Terceira to Graciosa might be with SATA? I really am no expert at
all, but I want to reassure you, if it is, that those inter island flights on

with which we have had all the problems.

Really good idea to just try to have quality time on Graciosa! I took a look
at some of your records and just wanted to make sure you saw that they give the
actual street on which your grandfather was born. Caminho das Fontes! Maybe
you will get even more clues in these records but this is a wonderful bit of

[AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Visit (Graciosa -- da Silva) -- UPDATE

2017-03-01 Thread Ken Waters

PARENTS

Manuel da Silva, born 9 Oct 1806, Santa Cruz
Louisa Candida, born 23 Jan 1799, Santa Cruz
MARRIAGE: 9 Sept 1827, Santa Cruz

CHILDREN

Maria da Silva, born 21 June 1828, Santa Cruz
Francisco da Silva, born 24 Aug 1831, Guadalupe
Manuel da Silva, born 10 Oct 1837, Guadalupe
Rita da Silva, born 20 Feb 1841, Guadalupe
Joao da Silva, born 6 Dec 1845, Guadalupe --> migrated to Yreka CA

Joao da Silva is my great-grandfather. Don Vasconcelos, if you are
agreeable I might like to look up your relative there, particularly if you
think she might be able to have some information that might help. Do you
know if she speaks any English? As I gain more information going through
these records including, hopefully, tie-ins to others who have Silva/da
Silva's in Graciosa I will post them to the list.

Again, thanks All for the great comments and suggestions!
