No Jeremy and Liz, go back and reread what Joao C. Ventura wrote. The new
title is "Genealogias da Ilha das Flores (Açores)." That translates to
"Genealogies of the Island of Flores (Azores)." So no, not all 9 islands.
ONE island - Flores.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Liz Migliori
I have a hard time with this. This information is online already and free for
everyone. Ancestry will charge you to get it. You can only get info from them
(that you have given them already) by being a member and paying that yearly
fee. Thank goodness for the other cite for those who cannot afford their
yearly fee
They because of the dollars that they collect they are able to market their
commercials so they can get more people to sign up and collect more $$$.
Family search is also free. When ever anyone asks me I recommend it over
Ancestry. Or go to a local FHL.

Just my opinion

Pat, the digital copies are available by the Azores Government and the
digital copies are available from the Family History Library in SLC. There
is no reason to have Ancestry do it and charge for what is free from both
the Government & SLC. The better question would be, can someone make an
index of marriages & births! That would be wonderful. At least, if the
marriages for each Island were done and made available to researchers, it
would help.
What I would like to see also is for someone to make an index for the book

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Pat, I am sure ancestry has tried many times to be able to put Azorean records
on their site. But why would anyone want to pay to look at records on Ancestry
when you can look at them free on the CCA website. The Azorean Government
originally had the LDS film the records and as such they are only available on
microfilm at the family History Centers or selected research sites. Or the CCA
site which includes more records than the LDS filmed in 1983. Ancestry is in
this business because the want to make money. I for one am against it.

Respectfully

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Pat Frade
I have finally found a way to request that the Azores Islands microfilms be
scanned/indexed and made available on Ancestry. Cheri and Rosemarie - we love
you and all you do for us. If Ancestry would do this, it would make Azores
Genealogy so much easier. I would ask that everyone on this list make a
request, let Ancestry know that those islands have information that many of us
want/need. They probably think they are so small, but we want the information
in an easier format!!!

Go to:
https://support.ancestry.com/kA21500QEDU?name=Providing-feedback-about-Ancestry-1460088569413&language=en_US&fromCase=

Click on the Suggestion box

Click on Historical record collections

Type a request.
Here is my request: I am very interested in having the microfilms from the
Azores Islands scanned and indexed so they are available on Ancestry. I belong
to a Google Group--Azores Genealogy and there are many in the group that are
active in Azores Genealogy. We have yearly conferences where we are taught how
to read the old priest's handwriting. It would make a huge different for all of
us if these records could be scanned and index. I pray that this request may be
considered. Thank you so much!

If everyone would make a request, it may help our cause.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Casais das Flores e do Corvo no longer in Amazon - new book coming soon

2017-06-08 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Based on something k read online, it is my impression that the new version is
more of a genealogy of the islands, incorporating both marriages and births,
and grouped by families.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Diz with a mark over z

2017-06-08 Thread climbatree2
Thank you for all your replies. I did find a much later record where the
name was Dias. Originally I was leaning towards Diniz as I had not seen
Dias abbreviated but apparently the priest for that time period used it
heavily.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Madalena Pico - Conservatória dos Registos Civil

2017-06-08 Thread Sean Andrade
Hi,

I have been contacting the registry in Madalena about two death records
post 1911. The person I am in contact with said they can't send email
copies of scanned records, but won't explain why. I find this strange
because when I was in contact with Faial they had no problem sending me
email copies of records post 1911. The only time they said they couldn't
was if the record had yet to be digitized, but that they would send it over
once it is.

I will not be traveling to Pico or the consulate at any point in the near
future and want to know if there is another way to find a digitized record
after 1911.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!
Sean

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Casais das Flores e do Corvo no longer in Amazon - new book coming soon

2017-06-08 Thread João Ventura
Hi all,

I honestly know nothing other than the what Francisco Gomes told me: the
name of the book, which is "Genealogias da Ilha das Flores (Açores)".
Looking for it, I also got this blog post where he asks for data on living
persons:
http://ailhadasflores.blogspot.de/2014/08/genealogias-das-flores-um-projeto-que.html

The book will be released in the "Festa do Emigrante" in Lajes das Flores,
which will be held July 14 to July 17. He will probably be able to sign the
book in person to anyone attending the "Festa". But note that Flores has
scarce available accommodation, and it will probably be full already
(although, airbnb is your friend :) ). The book is published by the Camara
Municipal of Lajes das Flores. So it will be paper-only. And you won't find
it available for sale in any website (not even theirs...). When I get some
more data, I'll post it here.

The "Casais das Flores" as ebook, has one major advantage over the paper
version: you can press Ctrl+F and do a full-content search. In a book like
this, think of the ebook as getting a copy of his database. So if you were
planning to eventually buy the ebook, but haven't gotten around to it yet,
do it ASAP, as it will be gone as fast as the Apple or B&N receive his
request to remote it:

Apple iBooks:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/casais-das-flores-e-do-corvo/id588378486
Barnes & Noble:
https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/casais-das-flores-e-do-corvo-francisco-gomes/1114254163?ean=9789892034348

As Robert indicated, Francisco Gomes already did a family-centered book a
long time ago for the Lajes das Flores + Fazenda + Lajedo parishes. This
time, it probably covers the entire island. Not many people have part 1, so
it probably makes no sense to publish part 2, 20 years later.

Best regards,

João C. Ventura

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Casais das Flores e do Corvo no longer in Amazon - new book coming soon

2017-06-08 Thread Cheri Mello
The "Casais das Flores e Corvo" (The Couples of Flores and Corvo) or the
Flores marriage book took the marriages from the beginning to 1911. So book
2 would go from 1912-1916? Or is this a book of baptisms or something else?

There were eBooks of the Flores marriage book. João C. Ventura (NOT the
archivist) convinced Francisco Gomes to release it in that format on a
couple of different sites. Salt Lake City has it in the eBook version. I'll
have to find the original post later where the eBook formats were.

NOTE to New People: This list has 1600? 1700? people on it. At this point
we have more than one John, Pat, Shirley, Robert, etc. And we have more
than one João Ventura. One João Ventura is an archivist. He signs his name
João Ventura. He's the one that does research for hire and works in the
archives on Tereira. The João making this post is João C. Ventura, a
computer programmer or software engineer. He signs his name as João C.
Ventura. Think "C" for computers. Hope that helps to keep them straight.

Cross our fingers. Maybe it will be Part II of the first book he put out in
paperback. Supposedly, it had been very close to completion for a while now.

If so, I hope he surprises us with an eBook version of the first one as well,
