Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ancestry

2018-01-19 Thread Mary Bordi
When I have searched for names on family trees, a private tree will pop up
once in a while in the list along with public trees. A message says to
contact the owner if I want to know more. I cannot search the tree and if
the hit is like many of the ones for public tress it isn't even really the
name I am search for but might be similar.

I am suspicious of any hits on Ancestry now. In trying to find out how I
link to a DNA match many times I have found that the source of the
information on their tree is another Ancestry member's tree. And often it's
my tree!

I have a minimal tree that's public and one going further back that is not.
I'll have to look into the non-searchable option that was mentioned.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ancestry

2018-01-19 Thread lisahbskt
I had this problem on Ancestry when I found my own tree in the search
results from a mirror tree. It turns out I had a duplicate tree which was
not private.

I went thru and checked privacy settings on all of my trees and made them
private yet searchable but not viewable without contacting me. Living
people still show as private on the trees when they are viewed.

I just ran a few names from my trees on Ancestry and they didn't come up
except from other peoples public trees.

I don't know of another site where they would be private

even if the tree is private it shows up in search with birth, marriage,

I never have posted my tree on a public site such as ancestry. I do have my
tree on the Family Tree DNA website but on that site only people that match my
DNA can see my tree. While have all my tree there you can privatize any number
of people on your tree this depends on the genealogy program you use. The
problem with most programs they are not precise as to who you can privatize.
For example if you privatize living persons then what about that gg grandfather
that you don’t have a death date for? I feel you should at least have any
generation earlier that your grandparents visible for people to fine a common
ancestor.  I do not include any generation newer than my generation (children
or grandchildren).
I do not have a problem with revealing my birth date or any other living person
on my tree as the information can be found in many other searches and besides
what can be done with a name and a birth date it is not going to get you in my
bank account. I feel that any one that wants to find information on you can
find it despite any of your efforts to hide it. I have seen people post their
tree on sites and when I look at it all the names are privatized so I wonder
why did they post it at all?

I would like to share how I found out about this issue. I was emailed by

According to Ancestry mine were set up that way but … then someone through a
message on Ancestry… said that they were able to search them. Since I did not
get a quick response from Ancestry I did what I had to do which was delete
them. My Ancestry trees are not accurate. They are working copies so as I find
information I incorporate it into the tree but I know that it could be wrong.
It does not become part of my paper tree until I have a confirmation of it
through some documents. I do not want to spread inaccurate information so my
trees need to be private. I’m always willing to help people. If they contact me
I give the information I have and also provide the documentation/references. If
you utilized information off my trees please contact me to obtain the
documents/references that verifies the information.
