[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese social group

2018-01-28 Thread Tomas Leal
What is now Fremont (which is a consolidation of several small towns) had a
great concentration of Azorean immigrants. In contrast, Oakland had fewer.
My grandfather's oldest brother settled and remained in Fremont while later
brothers spread into Oakland and elsewhere, Still, though, the festas were
in Fremont and they went there. Thus, an Oakland resident would be likely
to be active in a Fremont-based group.

Search 1876 and 1879. Our immigrant ancestors weren't always accurate with
their birth dates. I'd try 1879 first.

Don't know when your grandfather was born. Sao Miguel island was digitized
through 1905. You can access through Tombo.pt. Click the British flag if
you need English. On the top on the left column, type Ribeira Grande. Hit
search. On the main screen, pick N.S. da Estrela. Good luck, Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation Help Please -

2018-01-28 Thread Jacki Gentry
JR and Altino, thank you so much

The family members named, match the birth records I've found for both Thom
and Felicia. I was actually hoping this marriage record would mention their
ages and prove I had the wrong birth record for Felicia because I'm just
having a hard time accepting an age difference so big. According to my
birth records for them, he would have been 56 (born 18 Dec 1724) to her 19
(born 18 Dec 1761) when they married 3 Dec 1781. Unfortunately, I'm now
virtually certain I have the correct record. I get it, older men who wanted
to have families would have to find a wife young enough to bear children
but 37 years?yuk. The fact that his parents were both deceased makes
sense though.

*Altino*, thank you too for looking up the additional info. I'm not
familiar with Canto's index but your info does match the records I've found
at culturacores.azores.gov.pt

I will definitely be looking up the additional info you both posted as well.

Again, thank you both for taking the time to look all that up.

When someone DNA tests, they sign a paper saying they are willing to be matched
within the FTDNA system. So once a person logs into their match page, those
matches are meant for their eyes and their eyes only (or the proxy managing the
kit). Many people are ignorant of manners, ethics, etc. They think it's
absolutely OK to show something that was meant for them PERSONALLY to the
world. No, that's NOT okay. Same thing as taking a screen shot of your bank
account and publishing it on social media. Why not do that? We know why.
If you have some ideas for solutions, send them to me and I'll bring them to
the attention of FTDNA.
The screen shot that I show repeatedly of my dad's page shows only 4 people:
Me, cousin Nancy, cousin Marie, and cousin Altino. I have emails from them
saying it's OK to show their name and picture. The next person I do NOT have
permission. So hence my cutoff at 4 people. It's enough anyways.
As for the site protecting the information (DNA), only those with the kit
number and password have access to the DNA, same as your online banking. If the
password is shared and people think it's OK to share DNA with the world, well,
then that's not a problem with the DNA site, it's a problem with the person who
shared a password with someone who is completely ignorant about what is
ethically proper to do with someone's DNA. Same thing as sharing your banking
password. If you shared the password with me and I took a screen shot of your
account and posted it on social media, it's not the bank's problem. Our problem
is that we share DNA (unlike bank accounts) and genealogists don't understand
the line between sharing and violating privacy.
Again, if you have any ideas for FTDNA, let me know.

the info but posting it on a social media seems like an exposure to me. So it
makes me uncomfortable since I try to honor my relatives rights and protect
their identity information. In the past I tried to use Genmatch. I had problems

About FTDNA, sorry that's not true. If you want your tree private on FTDNA, you
can mark it completely private. Here's a completely private tree from FTDNA:

Here's the same tree, share with matches only but the living private:

FTDNA does, indeed, give you privacy controls.

So, if you want your tree private, do NOT upload it to ANY cloud based site
(Ancestry, Family Search, My Heritage, etc). DON'T DNA test. Just let your tree
live on your computer only and share with NO ONE. Only then will your tree
remain private. That's really the only way to keep something truly private.

Jacki, I hope this helps with Antonio do Rego and Maria Francisca. I looked at
Canto's index for Faja de Baixo. They had 4 other kids that I see...

Antonia Jacintha m. Francisco Rodrigues 3 Oct 1786
Francisco do Rego m. Maria Joaquinha 24 June 1787
André do Rego m. Ana Francisca 11 Oct 1787
João do Rego m. Josepha Francisca 18 Aug 1794.

Maybe the marriage record of one of these other kids might help with clues to
going further back with Antonio do Rego and Maria Francisca.

Hi, Gordon,

I agree with Susan--not likely to be Fremont. All the Portuguese societies in
California merged in 2010 into the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America. A
brief statement of the formation and organizations that merged is included on
the website at http://www.mypfsa.org/about-us/#/.
You may also be able to contact them via email or telephone.

Hi Gordon,

I’m wondering where you are reading that your grandfather was a founding member
etc? I don’t know the answer but the city of Fremont was formed in late 1950s
from most of the towns that were Washington Township so I doubt that FM stood
for that if what you are reading refers to a time before 1960.
My father lived in Centerville which eventually became part of Fremont and had
a policy from SES. I know I had to contact the organization located in San Jose
in order to collect on the policy when he died.

Doesn’t answer your question, but I wouldn’t guess that it stands for Fremont.
Maybe Fraternal Men’s? Even tho I have never seen that tagged on?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please -

2018-01-28 Thread 'Altino Demelo' via Azores Genealogy
Jacki, I tried replying to your post earlier, but the reply hasn't shown up on
my device.

The record says on Dec 3, 1781 in the Ermida of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, Thome
de Medeiros, legitimate son of Manuel Fernandes & Sebastianna da Rocha (both
deceased) weds Felicia Rosa, legitimate daughter of Antonio do Rego and his
wife, Maria Francisca. (Both are natives of this parish)

I found Manuel Fernandes marrying Sebastianna de Oliveira da Rocha in Canto's
index for Faja de Baixo. The date year is too hard for me to make out because
those pages have hard to read months without years.

Manuel Fernandes is the son of Manuel Fernandes and Suzana Luis.
Sebastianna de Oliveira da Rocha is the daughter of Pedro da Rocha and Maria de
Oliveira.

(Please double check the record to confirm)

Look in marriages around 1705.

2018-01-28 Thread 'Susan Murphy' via Azores Genealogy

PFSA on line and contact them to see what they have about the SES (if they are
now part of PFSA).

President for awhile. He is my grand father born in Pico.I don’t know what the
SESFM stands for.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please -

2018-01-28 Thread Jacki Gentry
Hi Everyone,

It's been a *really *long time since I've posted anything to the group.
Life sort of got in the way of researching. :) I'm trying to get back to
it and I've realized that I'm really out of practice reading these. I could
only read the basics anyway but after all this time, I'm not doing very
well with that either.

If someone could please be so kind as to translate the basic info from this
marriage record, I would truly appreciate the help. The record is for Thome
de Medeiros, born 18, Dec 1724 Fajo de Baixo, Sao Miguel and he married
Felica Rosa, who if I have the correct record, was born 3 Dec 1761. (37 yrs
his junior). I'm hoping this record mentions their parents and especially,
their ages at the time so I can confirm that this is correct or not.

Cheri, my apologies if I'm not posting this the correct way. As I said,
it's been a long time.

Cheers
