Joe Mendonca, I did not know that the Ponta Delgada archives would scan for
you. Good to know.

Joe Matias, the Archeevo site is the Archives Catalog. Any type of card
catalog doesn't provide detailed information. Catalogs, by nature, are just
a type of index. Maybe you missed my post on the Archives Catalog. Here it
is for your reference:

The inventories and wills varied a lot and from time period to time
period. The more recent ones were better, as they were more organized and
 followed a format.

They started with a cover page, naming the deceased and who was in
charge of their inventory. Some had maybe 7 pieces of paper (so potentially
14 pages of information). Some had 144 pieces of paper (288 pages of
information). The more "recent" ones (1920s forward) had a copy of the
death certificate with the cause of death listed. Or the best that medicine
knew for that time period. They named children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren if they had any. If you can read the births and
marriages, then you already know the words of "filhos" and "netos."
"Bisnetos" are the great-grandchildren. Some listed relatives on the
paternal side "pelo lado paterno" or the maternal side "pelo lada materna,"
Anytime I saw the word "familia" I scanned the page. Some listed what I
believe were people they owed. Some listed what they owned, as in the
furnishings and whatnot. My 2 great-grandmother's had a declaration from
her husband. I don't know what it says yet. I'm waiting on my cousin to
tell me. And there was a lot of legal stuff in there too.

The earliest will/inventory that I looked at was from 1807. Some exist
 from the 1700s.

Not every ancestor will have an inventory or will. You didn't need to
own property to have an will or inventory. As I said, it appeared that one
guy owed a lot of people a lot of money.

They allowed me to take pictures with my camera (found out I need a
different pair of reading glasses to take pictures). They said that the
inventories are NEVER to be posted anywhere on the Internet. That means
 Ancestry.com, Geni.com, My Heritage, FamilySearch.org, your own
personal page, etc. They consider the inventories private Yes, I understand
that if the person died in 1807, no one alive today was mentioned in that
will. But they have their rules. I said it was going to be left on my
computer so I could consult it. I would extract only genealogy information
from the documents, but would never post an image of any them. So for those
utilizing the inventories/wills, do NOT post them ANYWHERE on the Internet
or you mess it up for future genealogists.

Hopefully the other archives will get their inventories/wills up on the
 Archives Catalog.

I tried searching in Portuguese and can't turn it up. Maybe there was a name
change between then and now? The best I could come up with is the list of
churches, ermidas, and imperios on Graciosa:

At least you are looking at Graciosa (only 4 parishes) and you are looking for
an Amaro AND you have his parents. So it's do-able.  Cheri

My guess is that the priest mean to say Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe or Nossa
Senhora da Luz. Guadalupe and Rosario are both 4 syllables. Luz is only one.

I'd get their marriage, which I would guess is in the bride's parish (Sao Jose
in Ponta Delgada - I walked by that church every day last week)! That should
help clarify it (hopefully). Cheri

Cathy, I don't see a place/church by that name either ( I also looked at the
AzoresGenWeb site) Maybe it's just a name of a neighborhood? Perhaps someone
with more experience on Graciosa can chime in with an answer.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Inventories (Inventarios) and wills

2018-07-23 Thread Cheri Mello
Altino,
That link does not have the inventories or wills and it does not contain
the images of them. They were very explicit about NOT putting the
inventories/wills online. They stated to me that the inventories/wills are
for viewing only, as they are very private. Too bad they can't make a cut
off date. Someone who died in the mid-1800s and had descendants won't
really be invading their privacy, as all the descendants are also deceased.

Did the record that you found say Guadalupe or Rosario?

Yeah, weird things I learned when becoming a teacher...syllables.

I tried searching in Portuguese and can't turn it up. Maybe there was a name
change between then and now? The best I could come up with is the list of
churches, ermidas, and imperios on Graciosa:
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_de_edifica%C3%A7%C3%B5es_de_car%C3%A1ter_religioso_dos_A%C3%A7ores#Ilha_Graciosa

Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Inventories (Inventarios) and wills

2018-07-23 Thread 'Altino Demelo' via Azores Genealogy
Joe, you can research from home here :
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/registos/Default.aspx

You can also research on the Tombo website. Maybe someone else can provide that
link.

Joe M,

They explicitly stated that the inventories are NOT to be on the Internet.
If they were on the Internet they would not have told me NOT to post any of
the images online.

You have to go there to view them or hire a researcher. That's the only
ways I know of. Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Inventories (Inventarios) and wills

2018-07-23 Thread Joe Matias
Do you have to be in Ponta Delgada in order to view all the pages of your
search,or is there a way of doing so through the internet at home?

Here’s the marriage link and it says the same thing

My guess is that the priest mean to say Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe or Nossa
Senhora da Luz. Guadalupe and Rosario are both 4 syllables. Luz is only one.

I'd get their marriage, which I would guess is in the bride's parish (Sao Jose
in Ponta Delgada - I walked by that church every day last week)! That should
help clarify it (hopefully). Cheri

Cathy, I don't see a place/church by that name either ( I also looked at the

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] PASSPORT DESTINATIONS

2018-07-23 Thread Hana Johnson
Hi Maria,

I assume that Brazil was not expected as a destination. Are you positively
sure that passport record is of your ancestor? If you are certain it is
yours, then there must be an interesting story.

My ancestors from Ginetes left for Hawaii. In the destination column it
says Hawaii and there are ditto marks down the page. I think it even names
the ship as the Vapor (hard to read). The record in Hawaii states they came
on the Hanza or Hansa. The ship was actually the Vapor Hanza. The passport
date is July 1, 1882 and they arrived in Honolulu on September 15, 1882. It
appears that the ship was full of passengers leaving for Hawaii. Hawaii is
half a world away from Sao Miguel and, once they got here, they never left.
Brazil is not so isolated, but I would think that was the destination.

The passport was for Brazil. If they had enough money and were not happy in
Brazil, they could have left. Also, consider the reason for leaving and how
many and how often were ships picking up passengers and whether or not it
was a passenger ship.

My ancestors were illiterate and came here to work as farmers. According to
my mother, there were many relatives who came around the same time on
different ships. All of them came to work for the sugar industry.
Unfortunately, I don’t know who they all were, yet. Even if they had wanted
to leave Hawaii, that generation didn’t have the means to. It makes it a
little easier for me to research.

I have been researching my husband’s ancestors, a married couple with
children, who emigrated from Germany to Venezuela in the late 1800’s. It is
clear that several left to New York, but not all together, and there was
someone, also from Germany, in New York City to receive them. One son
stayed behind and settled in Venezuela where my husband is from.

I also have Danish ancestors who emigrated to Chicago. It took decades to
learn that an older cousin who had emigrated first, married well and
settled in New York, had been sponsoring their passage to America little by
little. They disembarked in New York but were received by immigrations in
Chicago.

It’s a long shot, but if Brazil was not where your Portuguese ancestors
wanted to be, and going back to the Azores was not an option, with money
and maybe a little help, they could have easily moved on. Anything is
possible.

Aloha,
Hana

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Dispensations

2018-07-23 Thread Cheri Mello
JR,

I'll have to see if I still have the request for Sao Miguel, 1770-1775.
They brought me more, as that is how it was packaged. There were only 3
dispensations. I want to say they brought me 1750-1775 and only 3 existed
for that whole time period for the whole island (and Sao Miguel is the most
populated island). As I said, very hit and miss, with more on the "miss"
side. Cheri

Brazil group, the Sandwich Isles group (Hawaii), and the America group,
with a few others scattered in.

Remember, not all passaportes exist. There are gaps. The port of Ponta
Delgada has gaps in the 1880s. Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage of Francisco Jose Cordeiro and Maria Isabel

2018-07-23 Thread Margaret Vicente
Bill,

What it is saying is that there were no impediments arising from the
announcements/Alvara which was to be deposited in the Archives. It's all
standard. If you check the other records you will note the same process.
The remainder is also standard, nothing out of the ordinary.

Best,
Margaret

[AZORES-Genealogy] PASSPORT DESTINATIONS

2018-07-23 Thread Maria Lima
If the destination says "BRAZIL" then does that mean the person had to actually
leave for BRAZIL? Was it customary to say you wanted passport for one country
and then go to another?

Im looking around 1882/83 and most of the Destination columns are for Brazil
only with Ditto marks all the way down the page.I've been reading every
name but maybe I just look for those going to America and read from right to
left.

Thanks.
