Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help
I'm afraid I don't see Maia. I think the father is from Vila Franca. I see o pai natural desta villa e a mãe natural da Ponta ??? (I believe JR is correct, I'm just having a hard time to make what I see to say "Garça". It does say they are residents of Ribeira Sequa (Seca) which as JR and Cheri stated is part of this parish but became its own parish in 2002. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help
Fernando, Sao Miguel island has 2 different Ribeira Secas today. Generally, when doing genealogy around Ribeira Grande, if you find an ancestor from Ribeira Seca, it's the one in Ribeira Grande. The other Ribeira Seca that is part of the council of Vila Franca became a freguesia in 2002. Most of us are researching further back. However, if you are researching in Vila Franca back in time, it may refer to Ribeira Seca. You just have to be careful and as you get used to the geography, it'll become clearer to you. You are working an area where one freguesia in one council is touching another freguesia which is in another council. JR has a pretty extensive database of Ponta Garca people and surrounding areas. He probably ran a search and found your ancestors :) Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: São Miguel island: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada On Tue, Jan 29, 2019 at 6:06 PM wrote: > Thanks for the clarification. Thanks for the clarification. Maia is from Ribeira Grande and I think that municipality has a Ribeira Seca as well. So I wasn’t sure what church they were referring too. I thought it was odd it said this village of Maia, when the record is from the Vila Franca municipality? JR, how did you find out the mother is from Ponta Garca? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group. The mother, Izabel Furtada, is from Ponta Garca. Father is from Maia. They are living in Ribeira Sequa (Seca), which was part of Vila Franca. Today it has it's own village status. Occasionally on some older records you may even see it under Ponta Garca.
