Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Tracking My Grandparents lost without a trace

2019-03-15 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Mario or Billy,

You are looking a church records. They are done by date. If it's a baptism,
they are going by baptism date. So they are chronological. It may take more
than 2 days to get used to it though.

Silva/Silvia and things like that, you'll get use to it.

If you know your dad was Mariano and was born 14 Apr 1914, you can get his
baptism which will provide his parents and his grandparents and from there,
you can use the online records. You need to know the exact village your dad
came from. If he came from the city of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel, you'll
need to know the church as they have a few.

Once you get the 3 piece of information (name, date, and place -village
and/or church), you can pay Joao Ventura to retrieve the record for you. He
takes PayPal. His email is heroi99 at yahoo.com

After that, we can show you the format that the records follow for the 3
time periods. It's on the Azores GenWeb here:
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/finding-your-portuguese/finding-your-portuguese-9/

And if you learn better in person than reading and figuring it out on your
own, you are in luck. We are having a Portuguese Genealogy Conference in
June in Salt Lake City. That information is here:
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/2019slcazoresconfv12.pdf

Good luck,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Tracking My Grandparents lost without a trace

2019-03-15 Thread Billy Shear
I've wasted two days, going through Birth records,Passport records
Baptismal records looking over the Centro de Conhecimento. All such a waste
of time. I don't understand their system, nothing is files by dates(like
year, month, day) they start with first names. So in my case. His first name
was Manuel and my Grandmother is Maria, page after page so disappointing. I
think I'll just forget about trying to find out were they came from and
just visit the Island. I would think someone would come up with a better
system. To make things worst their last name was changed from DaSilva to
Silvia when they come from Sao Miguel, Ponta Delgarda to the USA,so much
for accuracy. So half my cousins are Silva and the other half are Silvia.
My father was born there and his first name was Mariano, now that's a
different name. I found a few pages with that first name however it does
not go to April 14,1914. I hope when I get there it will be some what
easier.

Thank for any help

I don't know which freguesias your ancestors were from. Sao Miguel is the
largest island, 40 miles or so by 10 miles or so. If your ancestors are from
the western end of the island, stay in Ponta Delgada. If they are from the
northern side, you may want to say in Ribeira Grande. So it just depends.

Others with Pico and Faial connections will probably have recommendations. Good

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] visiting the Azores in May

2019-03-15 Thread 'Susan Murphy' via Azores Genealogy
Hello Deb,

I thought I would just throw this in a recommendation for a guide. I’ve
been to the Azores several times and on my last three visits to Sao Miguel, we
have used a wonderful guide, Gary Travassos.

I’ve also used taxis but there is really something to be said about having a
guide who can show you so much in the most economical use of your time. Gary
spent some time in Canada and then his parents decided to return to the Azores,
so Gary speaks perfect English. We have always loved our time with him. I do
not have ancestry in Sao Miguel so never tried to find specific village streets
with him but am sure he would be great with that too. Sao Miguel is really a
show stopper in my book I can’t say it’s my favorite as I stay true to my
island ancestry LOL but my non Portuguese husband will flat out tell you,
it’s the best for beauty.
I would suggest going for a day with him before going out on your own which you
still could do. To see both sides of the island, we actually used him for two
days and feel it was very worthwhile!

https://www.azoreantours.com/

We had a guide in Faial and Pico which I would not particularly recommend.

You are in for a treat! My first visit was in 1983 life changing I would
say as my visit gave me so much insight about who I am. The islands have called
me back 5 times since that first visit and I hope for one more trip to take my
youngest daughter’s family! I’ve been waiting for my littlest grandson to get a
little older:)

Savor each moment!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] visiting the Azores in May

2019-03-15 Thread Leonor Bertoni
I grew up in São Miguel and have done the Volta a Ilha many times, before
they built the highway. The back roads are still my favourite way to
travel, we often stay off the highway, in this way we always find small
treasures, whether a restaurant, a coffee shop or a beach, there’s always
something!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions for my trip to the Azores in May.  Such
good ideas!
If anyone has specifics about car rental, people who give tours, places to see
in FAIAL (Feteira is where grandpa is from) and PICO (which is where more
distant relatives are from), I would appreciate it.

 Deb,
If you know where you are going, rent a car. Or you can go to the taxi stand,

If he says 4 hours, ask him what he makes in 4 hours and pay him that. Many
people on this list have kept the names and numbers of specific taxi drivers
who kinda double as tour guides. I'm sure they will speak up.

Good
luck and enjoy! Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: visiting the Azores in May

2019-03-15 Thread Steve Peters
Rent a car. It is easy to drive there, hard to get lost on an island
(usually one perimeter highway and a couple that go across), and you will
be free to go (or stay) wherever you want and hang out for as long as you
want. This is especially the case on São Miguel and Pico, which are pretty
big and have lots of places to go. (Faial is quite small and you can drive
all the way around it in maybe two hours.)

BUT: Depending on where you are staying, you may not need or want a car the
entire time. For example, if you are based in Ponta Delgada, Madalena, or
Horta for a few days, they are all easy walking cities and you won't need a
car to get around town, so you might consider renting cars a day or two at
a time as needed to go on excursions. Of course, if you are staying in more
remote places, or want to move around a lot, you will need a car the entire
time. Isla Verde is the main rental car company, but I have also had good
luck with small local ones that I find once I get there. Folks where you
are staying can also advise you.

If you want to stay outside of the major cities there are quite a few
AirBnB-type options. There are hotels at various sizes and price points in
Ponta Delgada and Horta, and both towns are lovely. On Pico, I don't
recommend staying right in Madalena as there isn't much there besides the
port and some retail shops, so it's better to stay in or near a smaller
town like Lajes. If you want a nicer eco-hotel-type place to stay on Pico,
I recommend Aldeia da Fonte near
Lajes. It isn't cheap, but a beautiful place and has a decent restaurant.

For organized excursions on Faial, I highly recommend my friends at
OurIsland . They are great folks,
young and smart and really know and love the place and history, and can
plan outings to fit your specific interests.

Have fun!

Steve Peters
