Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] New Family Ancestry Survey on FTDNA

2019-08-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Here's the paternal grandfather. Yours may vary.

The first 2 are from a drop down menu (with the red checkmarks). The top
one, I started typing "Portuguese" and it came up. The 2nd question, I
started typing Portugal and it had a variety, so I picked basic Portugal,
because the Azores (and Madeira) belonged to Portugal. The 3rd part (with
no check mark) was where I got to put my specific input. So I put Azores
there and gave them the island. I'm not sure that they'll go that far with
it though.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] New Family Ancestry Survey on FTDNA

(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, IslandRoutes lists)

A few years back (about 2013-2014), Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) did a survey,
asking for background information which they then incorporated into their
ethnicity estimates. Only 25 people of Portuguese descent answered. That was
all. "Portuguese" then had to cover Portugal, Azores, Madeira, and Brazil. Only
25 people! And of course many people did not match those 25 in the population
sample. And of course people were disappointed with their ethnicity estimates.

If you would like more accurate results for the Azores, Madeira, Portugal,
Brazil (or any other country), NOW is the time. Family Tree DNA has created a
new Family Ancestry Survey. You need to have ordered Family Finder, transferred
over to FTDNA (from Ancestry, My Heritage, 23 and Me), or you have a Family
Finder test on order.

1) Open your genealogy program and have the main person be the same as the test
person (I did my dad because he's half Portuguese). It helps as a reference if
you are answering for someone else.
2) Log directly into the kit with the kit number and password.
3) Scroll down the left column looking for the survey and click it:

There are only 4 questions. And it's clunky and not intuitive.

It asks which ethnicity the test taker's father's father was from. So the test
taker's paternal grandfather. If you start typing "Portuguese" it will suggest
"Europe - Portuguese." Then it asks for the country. The Azores nor Madeira is
a country, so you pick Portugal. Then it asks for other group affiliation
details. Here you can put something like "Born in the Azores, Sao Miguel
island" or "Born in Madeira."

It then repeats the process for the test taker's paternal grandmother, maternal
grandfather, and maternal grandmother.

However, if you have something that's plain old American, it becomes difficult.
My dad's maternal half has been in America for a couple of hundred years (at
least). So when it wants his maternal grandfather's ethnicity, that would be
American. Nope, that was not an option. Neither was Caucasian. I finally picked
Europe - English even though he was a blend of the British Isles (English,
Irish, Scottish). For his birth place, it allowed United States of America.
Then for other group affiliation details, I put "Born in Kansas."

So please, Please, PLEASE answer the survey so we can have more accurate
results for our corner of the world. Don't let another 5 years (or so) go by!

(No, I don't know when the survey will end and they will stop collecting
results.)

[AZORES-Genealogy] New Family Ancestry Survey on FTDNA

2) Log directly into the kit with the kit number and password.

There are only 4 questions. And it's clunky and not intuitive.

Great job Margaret!
It reminded me that there's also available online the book of Carlos
Machado, with some lines regarding Santa Maria:

How do you know the name is Jose Soares do Rego? The marriage only gives

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: 1701 Marriage of Domingos Velho and JoanaFernandes, Santa Barbara, Island of Santa Maria

2019-08-29 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi Bill,

According to RR’s information entered in prior email; Balazar Velho son of
Domingos Velho, son of Manuel Fernandes da Silva, son of Francisco Vaz Delgado
and Catarina Goncalves.

The archives have files that include tree reconstructions of various work notes
including that of RR’s. Have a look at # 57. You may be able to request/order
copies.

http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/details?id=1557252=maria

If RR and others reconstructed your Ancestor’s family, it leads me to believe
that Rodrigo Rodrigues reference chapter posted in Angela’s email is probably
all there is.

Now that I've had a chance to digest this outstanding (yet disappointing)
information, it seems that I found the wrong Manuel Fernandes da Silva married
to the wrong Maria Velha.  The couple, with same names, that I need, according
to RR married in 1647 is Santa Barbara where the first Casamento book starts in
1648.  The one I found took place ten years later and both newlyweds have
different parents than the Manuel Fernandes da Silva and Maria Velha given by
RR.

I am hoping for some advice on how to proceed.

I think this might be the marriage of the groom's parents:

What I think I see is:

Manuel Fernandes, son of Andre Fernandes da Silva and Anna Velha (deceased)
marrying Maria Velha daughter of Antonio Velho da Costa and Breatis (Beatris?)
George.

Reading around the torn pages, the date is the fifteenth of some month in 1657

I appreciate any other insight or opinions.

Me again. Was the first marriage Jan 18 1698?
Was Gaspar also a widower of Maria Jacintha?
Was Maria Futra daughter of Francisco Dutra and a few more Francisco’s?
Looks like a Francisco Garcia is in there also?

finally Laurência Rosa de Jesus.

Also try to find out the death record(s) for your Joaquina.

It depends on the record. At the baptism, the mother was not present (at least
back in the day). So someone may not have remembered her middle name correctly.
Or maybe she changed it for some reason. I make a timeline with all the records
she is in and I weigh the evidence from there.
Good luck,

Now that I've had a chance to digest this outstanding (yet disappointing)
information, it seems that I found the wrong Manuel Fernandes da Silva married
to the wrong Maria Velha. The couple, with same names, that I need, according
to RR married in 1647 is Santa Barbara where the first Casamento book starts in
1648. The one I found took place ten years later and both newlyweds have
different parents than the Manuel Fernandes da Silva and Maria Velha given by
RR.

I am hoping for some advice on how to proceed.

You got the names on the record right.

I took a look at the RR book, and it says:

I think this might be the marriage of the groom's parents:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-C-1648-1716/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-C-1648-1716_item1/P15.html
(upper left starting on previous page)

What I think I see is:

Manuel Fernandes, son of Andre Fernandes da Silva and Anna Velha (deceased)
marrying Maria Velha daughter of Antonio Velho da Costa and Breatis (Beatris?)
George.

Reading around the torn pages, the date is the fifteenth of some month in 1657
or Jan of 1658.

I appreciate any other insight or opinions.

Thanks,

Bill Seidler
