Hi Cheri,

Great Idea. I do use RootsMagic at the moment but will sure give the other
a try and see how it handles and what features I get in comparison. Thanks!

I have the wrong line but now that I have narrowed it down. We are most

Hi Brian M,

I was just stating the fact of how researchers for hire work. There's a
list on the Azores GenWeb. If they are busy, they may not answer you for a
month either. And there's always the possibility of your message going into
their spam folder. That's not terse, that's a fact that happens to everyone.
Good luck!

Hi Brian M,

The researcher that lives there that covers Sao Jorge and Graciosa islands
is Joao Ventura. He has a real job (it just happens to be working in the
archives for the government for whatever they assign him). He does research
for hire as a side job. So he does this research for hire after his regular
work job is finished for the day. So you won't be able to fly over there
and just sit down with him while he is working his regular job and expect
to see him doing a side job during his regular work hours. Any of the
researchers for hire you will pay them a fee and they do the research and
send you the results. It doesn't matter if you go to their location or not,
you will still receive your results. If you happen to fly to where they are
located, maybe you could try to meet up at lunch or after work with them.

Many researchers for hire can only work so many cases at a time and some
have a wait list. If you have contacted Joao, make sure you have put "99"
and not "9" by mistake.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Holiday Sale (through Dec. 26th)

2019-12-05 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes lists)

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)'s Holiday Sale has begun and will run though
Thursday, December 26th, until 11:59 PST.

At a glance, the prices appear to be the same as the Black Friday through
Cyber Monday sale. I'm waiting for a nice chart (like last time) to post
the prices.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Practice Portuguese (learn the language) Sale through Monday

2019-12-05 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
I too was pointed toward Duolingo from someone who used it.  I REALLY like it.
It is structured in a way that works well with the way my brain works.  Having
said that, it's Brazilian Portuguese, which has caused me to stop and look for
a European Portuguese alternative.
When I searched for ancestors, I found friends!

I've been directed to one called Duolingo. Not sure how well this compares but
I know it's free and does do modules also.

Practice Portuguese is an online learning module for European Portuguese. They
have lessons (learning modules) consisting of listening, writing, fill in the
blank, pick the picture, etc. They also have podcasts and little video episodes.

They are having a sale through Monday. It averages out to $11.50 USD per month
if you sign up for the one year plan:

For those who are interested in learning the language, there are many to chose
from. Pick the one that you like best, just like you do with genealogy software.
