I thought I acknowledged the error in my earlier comments. How it got there
I don't recall. I just made some other corrections taken from the Ribeira
Quente casamentos index.

Bottom line, check your files against the records if you want to be
accurate.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree And Portuguese Ancestry ..

2020-01-14 Thread JesseAndDeborah Mendonca
An ossuary is where the bones of the dead (from many people) are
deposited. It solves the space problem for burial on the islands. Seven
years after the original burial, bones are dug up and put into the church
depository called an ossuary. If a family wanted to continue to pay for
the burial site, they could keep the plot longer.

and, is the surname of da silva common in azores; are they all related to

 Hi Anthony

There are a few trees on ancestry.com for Joseph Silver who died 18
Aug 1908 at “Ebbeville” Upper Manila NSW. He married Catherina (Katie)
Nowland in 1876 and had 11 or 12 children. Two sons survived to adulthood:
Francis Laurence and Paul James Silver.

This Joseph Silver arrived in Sydney on 9 Dec 1864, aged 26 (placing
his birth around 1838) from Wellington NZ. He was one of a crew of 8+ the
captain. The official records show his birth nation as ”Fayal”, which I
would assume is Faial, one of the western islands of the Azores. However
the trees on Ancestry have his birth listed as 1841 in Faial da Terra on
the island of Sao Miguel. I am inclined to go with the western Island of
Faial as more likely, because Faial was listed as the nation not the
village. Perhaps someone more familiar with Sao Miguel and Faial da Terra
 could help here.

To find where on the island of Faial is a bit trickier. You would need
to research the records for each Freguesia (village) for around the time
 of
his birth 1838-1841 or maybe enlist the help of one of this groups
 genealogists.

The Manila historical Society could help with obituary etc on
 www.manillamuseum.org.au or 02 67851207 9-4pm Thursday for historian.
You might get lucky with parents names and birth village.

Happy to help further so you can contact me on my email directly, if
you wish. My ancestor from the western island of Flores was a very
 similar
 timeframe to your Joseph Silver.
 Pam

Elaine,

Myself and Celeste have researched mainland Portugal. Many of the records are
now online now even some passportes records and Joao Ventura from Portugal (not
the Azores one) is still adding to them. You will need area of Lisboa he/she
came from same as Azores research. I did personally go to the archives in
Lisbon a couple of times quite a few years ago. I did manage to meet my large
family still living in Lisboa and hosted a family reunion at our hotel twice
andstill keep in contact with them. I don’t think there is a Portugal list
anymore but others on this list might be able to reach out to you to help.
Check out tombo.pt website.

JR, Are you sure on that Virginia born on 23 Mar 1893 to Antonio de Mello
Barboza and Claudina de Jesus? She's not born quite 9 months after the
previous child (meaning Antonio and Claudina did the deed right after Rosa
was born...After hours of labor and giving birth her husband wanted
that?!?!?) I pulled this record. It's the right date, but it's not matching:

Can you look? I think you got a case of fancy fingers there :)

Elaine S,

This list is for researching the 9 Azores islands. However, we have a few
people who have researched the mainland who might be able to help you. The
research strategy is the same. You need the village over there. Here's a
how-to on getting started, written from an Azorean slant. Just change
everything to Portugal in you mind:

2020-01-14 Thread Elaine Silvia
Joao Jacob is my father. He was born in Lisbon. I have his his birth and death
dates. He did immigrate to the U.S. and died here. His father was Joao Jacob
and his mother was Geraldine Alves. He supposedly came from a large family. Any
help or advice is welcome.
