Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU Maggie 15 !!! Your time and effort to provide BOTH the Portuguese record and right below it the translation is the greatest learning tool I have seen and is a big motivator for me to consider. again, to overcome my challenge to tackle my mothers Azorean "Jose' Joaquim da Silveira; b: 23 Jun 1797 Cedros, Flores " line. As Sam said "Oh Boy, am I excited ! " When I see you show birth dates of 1788 for Machado and Silveira. Being realistic these names are like Smith and Brown in English so I won't hold my breath but I will devourer your line and research where your locations are located. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Frank Gomes and Manuel Gomes
Some 3 years ago a generous member of this group shared with me (Thank you) they had found what may be a 5 G G mother of mine name Catarina Gomes who was married to a Manuel Valadao. I have recorded my understanding in that the source of this is a " Flores History Book / Azores web". If any one knows a more definitive title and/or author of such a book I would be appreciative if I could be so informed. Family//Search has a Find A Grave Index record of a Catarina Gomes death 15 Mar 1650 at Cedros, Horta Municipality, Azores Region, Portugal. It also shows she had a Child Maria Gomes. (_ - 1671). My Catarina Gomes had a daughter Maria who married a Joao Rodrigues Serpa. The web encyclopedia Wikipedia says Cedros, Horta Municipality, Azores is on Faial, but I have documentation that my 2 G G parents came from Cedros on Flores and it has been stated my 3 G G Father served the Church on both Cedros and Faial before relocating to Samoa and marring the kings daughter (?) All too interesting likely to be factual, but with enough possibility that there may some value to be considered . I would welcome any thoughts or other avenues to venture to for perusing this family or sharing additional information which would document this family line from my Manuel Lewis (!) and wife Francisca Marianne Joseph and the above referenced Manuel Valadao and Catarina Gomes. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program
To clarify my post below I will point out I am not computer literate. For that reason I maintain an annual subscription to Best Buy's "Geek Squad" professional computer service. I believe they were able to convert my 32 bit FTM version 2006 (that's the version that my opening page of my current FTM program still shows) to run on a 64 bit computer. My under standing is that Ancestry purchased the rights to FTM about Version 2006. During their early ownership they maintained and created changes to the program up to about version 8 or 9. Being uncomfortable with some of the changes, I stopped upgrading at Version 2006 and went back to my backup 2006 version. My understanding is that Ancestry then developed a completely new and different genealogy program (app?). At some point they developed a conversion program for FTM 32 bit to FTM 64 bit. When my old computer died, Ancestry had already moved ahead to either Version 11 or 12. and were no longer supporting FTM 32 OR the conversion program. In working with Ancestry my Geek Squad agent was able to establish that if I was willing to pay for the upgrades of my Version 2006 to Ancestry's Version (?)2009 they could convert my Version 2006 (now actually 2009) to run on a 64 bit computer. So I am now running with some of Ancestry's upgrades that I originally tried to avoid but its a small price to pay as I still essentially have the old Broderbund program. Ralph E. I found these are both good and worth while products and have helpful staffing but having FTM I find they are more complex than I need. So to make a long story short after a lot of blood. sweat, and tears, and my Geek Squad help, I have reverted back to my FTM version 2006. It still works fine, full fills my every need, is simple, self intuitive, so I intend to keep it as long as it works. My distress was created when my 32 bit computer died and I had to buy a new one. At that point in time all new computers were 64 bit. My FTM would not run on 64 bit so I had to upgrade FTM to 64. When Ancestry purchased FTM they developed a conversion program. When my computer died they had developed their own new version FTM and no longer supported the original FTM they purchased or the conversion program. Copies have been distributed to many public entities, including public libraries, historical societies, and town halls, which have been helpful to me in collection of data. It is now out of print. I would hope that some entity would take an interest in that original Broderbund program and maintaining the original self intuitive program concepts windows, etc., make and maintain the program to do things like making FTM run on a 64 bit program rather than earlier 32 bit or 16 bit program or earlier. I have heard that some company may have purchased from Ancestry the rights to FTM ? Which FTM ? [AZORES-Genealogy]
For what it is worth: My desk top computer disk was failing. Bought new big touch screen desk top and Geek Squad contract to install and service. Nobody could get my Family Tree V6 up and running on brand new idiot box. So had to pay to upgrade to Ancestry V8 and then again to Ancestry V10 because V8 was no longer supported. I hate ANCESTRY'S genealogy program ! Out of pure frustration and s_ _t luck I reinserted my V6 disk into the idiot box and BINGO ! After running through warnings, incompatibility, unsupported notices, and directions to contact Ancestry for an up grade, which of course I had just paid for two, I have been running Borderbond,s FTM for a year and a half now. However, getting sick and tired of the hassle each time I open my FTM I elected to break down and buy a new program. I received Legacy today. In attempting to load it with my 20,000 FTM records I found I cannot create a GEDCOM from my V6 as I get a message that my hard drive has been damaged and cannot make such a file. Now that message, I suspect, is left over from my old computer as that is one of the ways I knew I had a problem that needed to be addressed and the reason I bought the new HP and got stuck with Microsoft V8. So Al, I am sorry. I am very sympathetic, Welcome to the Club! My V6 seems to work satisfactorily in all other regards. It takes up dates, additions, merges etc, Prints charts, Pictures, reports etc. I don't look forward to manually reentering 20,000+ records. But I am sufficiently put out that it looks like that may be my only alternative. If any one has any suggestions as to what I might try I would be most grateful for any suggestions. Ralph E. Fw: [AZORES-Genealogy] MyOrigins surprise findings from Family Finder DNA testing
I find these discussions interesting and/or perhaps amusing ? I am most curious about the term/statement which is regularly stated and apparently accepted by many that we get half our genes from one parent and half from the other. It is logical to assume that both or either parents have equal opportunity to provide genes. Is there any scientific documentation that it is half and half? Could it be 40/60 one way or another or perhaps 30/70? My nursing degree wife tells me that the male determines the sex ! How do we know that is a fact not hearsay? In comments regarding Family Finder it is stated that the back ground of siblings shows up differently. How come. Could it be that one child got 40% from mom and 60% from dad while the other child got 70% from mom and only 30% from Dad? SMILE, just wondering! Why do siblings turn out so much different from one another if they all get an equal half? Ralph E.
